Tiv interrupts his small talk about how good Aesgirr clothing looks on Yumi to allow Ummimiir to make his introduction. He was away when this meeting was arranged, so he offers his hand in greeting to announce;

Tivali Thingvallir, Technical Commander. Please call me Tiv. Impressive station you have here. I spend much time here, as I’m sure you know.

Very well, Tiv it is. The Oghman with the computer fixation. It makes sense you would be in company with robot building Oghmen.

Medusa takes a drink and looks over the carousing warriors: School field-trip?

Changing the topic:

It is, indeed, an impressive installation, but it is not, in point of fact, in any way mine. I do a little business here, but from premises that are rented. I am prosperous, but I do not have the scratch to buy such a facility at the present time.
Raven replies “We might seem unusual Oghmen, but we are in fact the most simple and true to our type for we are the Heirs of the Dragon – and we rise. Therefore, what you can see might prove to be different than what it seems”. Raven glances casually at her carousing war band then continues, “For we also seek alliances and allies for our clan along the Sindalian Main – maybe even as far away as distant Theev. We are Oghmen and as we spread our dragon wings we will raid but where and when would be influenced by negotiations with our new allies. As it is the "spices" that we seek would be instrumental in setting down a marker or boundary so that some will know, despite the “Glory” which they attribute to themselves, that when in others' territory they should not... overreach”.

Raven confidently quaffs ale and then adds “Lady, I spoke of seeing and seeming. This must already seem like a compact you can afford to take on - there would be no risk to you if we fail. Indeed, based on that seeming, you could simply choose to wait. However, what you can see before you is Raven Sorrow, her warband and the crew of the Cunning Serpent - and so there simply is no "seeming". Take my hand and that of Clan Ásgeirr in alliance now and I swear that I will bring you another fine pelt to wear about your shoulders”.
Medusa listens to Raven with interest, empties her glass and holds it out. The server immediately fills it, and she smiles. Good boy. I might keep you around.

Well, Raven Sorrow, you make a fine speech, in which are words I had not suspected to exist in Oghman. Allies and alliances. Perhaps this is an error of translation?

No matter. That, we can park, for now, because such matters I do not deal in here. I am, after all, only a simple broker of commodities.

As you see, my hand is gloved, and to shake it at present would not signify anything much. Such arrangements I make here are sealed with the exchange of cash. Perhaps, later, if we find business mutually profitable, we will find ourselves in a place where I do not wear gloves, and in that place I will exchange a handshake that will matter more than somewhat.

Looking down at her coat:

This? It is a fine fur. Uisuikaa’s husband killed it for her. She gave me it when he died, as a memento.

I think you are not alone in your regard for boundaries, and which side of them certain parties belong on.

As Uisuikaa might say “Hoieyol oeatra oayulr au yosearui kaisealei hkalahtoah eaiy ereikh farle.

The Serpent whispers Trokh detected. Tread carefully in strange fields, reptiles may be hidden there.

No, the parties I do business with would not be saddened or surprised if a new, and to some unwelcome, guest here found themselves in trouble, being unfamiliar with our customs.

And if I get a new coat, I will be inclined to warm feelings for the party that gifts it to me.

She pauses to assess the Oghmen in front of her, then announces:

Well, I am persuaded that you are serious people. You intend to go somewhere, and I think you will. I shall open an account with you. Then, you will be disinclined to think of rising by stepping in my direction, I am thinking. Which will be less trouble for both of us. She smiles, before continuing:

Ummiimir tells me something of what you look for, and it is something I do not find prudent to discuss in public places.

Ummiimir smiles, and offers: There is an office attached to this place, if you care to follow me…

Medusa grins back: I know it. Thank you. In return for your hospitality, I will drink this glass before we go there. To give Soraia a chance to tidy up. I would not want to damage any of her delicate equipment.

Ummiimir looks pained: Very considerate, I’m sure, but unnecessary.

He leads everyone to a door near the bar, picking a careful path through the groups of celebrating youths. Entering a code, he opens it, revealing a short corridor. Passing a door on either side, he enters a code again and opens a door to an office. Medusa walks in and produces an egg-shaped device from an inside pocket of her coat. Setting it on the table, she advises: I am about to shut down any comms in this room. If you expect an important call, or your tech is sensitive, wait outside.

She presses the top of the device, and all comms signals drop out.

Now we have some privacy, we can talk freely.

Ummiimir tells me you ask about Dust-Spice. I have some of this. Genuine Romar, 1-a, from Mora, than which there is no better. I am expecting to sell to Uisuikaa's agent, who will be more than somewhat happy to buy it, but I will accept fifteen K for a Kg from you.

If you have other needs, I will hear them. I am a compounding chemist, and I trade in unusual and niche commodities, it is likely I find things other brokers do not.

Damn! I figured they knew everything that goes on in this station.

As Tiv was out doing his thing, he stands by to let Kar or Raven deal with this.

Raven waits in apparent bewildered frustration as all the preparations are made in the office and then scowls "My words did not mistranslate but I will repeat them so you can be sure".*

She states levelly "Again. I am Raven Sorrow, Raid Leader on the Cunning Serpent of Clan Ásgeirr and favoured by the gods. I am personally entrusted by Jarl Hallstein with making allies and alliances. An unusual task for one whose expertise is entirely in killing but I am determined and I will not fail my Jarl. Clan Ásgeirr will rise and so, Lady Medusa, I advise that you do not tarry in offering your hand in alliance. Although Theev is far and Oghma yet so close the Jarls there will no doubt be displeased if you miss your opportunity and make them late to the meadhall".

Then Raven suddenly gives a vulpine smile revealing her straight white teeth and states "And yet here I am to help you decide. Within two days your choice will be clear for within that time I intend to lead a cutting out raid into Blackrock's hangars. We will board the Glorious Empire vessel currently docked there and kill or capture the crew. We will then quit the hangar and take our chances in space with the Aslan escort vessel. All I require is that Theev chooses to look away. I believe that the All Father will not - so I will either succeed or dine in Valhalla".

She cheerfully continues "But, Lady Medusa, I say what will turn out is that you will have a new coat and an Aslan will lose one. When "in a strange field" it is no doubt wise to check for reptiles but you'll surely live longer if you first check for Oghman warriors! As to this "spice" you trade I take your word as to its quality and I understand that it is very potent in small doses. We will require a kilo".

She then asks "Is Uisuikaa an Aslan we need to concern ourselves with?"

Medusa remains impassive behind her dark glasses as Raven speaks.

We are speaking plainly then, that is good.

Though, perhaps you speak too plainly. Matters such as you announce, it is to be hoped my precautions are enough that no-one hears.

You say Oghma spreading its wings, which is interesting, and I will be speaking of it to people in a position to be interested. What I say, and how it is said, will matter more than somewhat, but I hold no other power in such things. I am called Medusa. Not Lady Medusa. This distinction indicates I am an agent, not an actor.

I am in no way committing to bind anyone on Theev to an agreement they know nothing of, any more than you or your Captain can promise the sworn hand of your Jarl to a compact he has not heard.
However, it might well be that one of these people I talk with asks me to say kind words to you, such as you wish to hear, but this is a thing of weeks, not days. Theev is two steps each way, and a pause for breath between.

As to your proposed venture, it is of such a nature that I cannot hear of, because it is a thing I must disavow. If I have to put it in my next letter to Theev, as one of the events at Blackrock, the Lords will have to pronounce on it, and their word must be a hard one, it is expected.

Therefore, if you set about a scheme, it must be done quietly. Loud noises and bright lights disturb the management. They attract that eye you wish to be blind.

Pulling off a caper, such as I do not recall hearing you speak of, would mark you out as a resourceful crew though, such as the influential people I speak to would want to work with in future.

So, Raven Sorrow, I will not be taking off my glove, but I will shake your hand, wish you good hunting, and hope to speak well of things I do not hear about.

She then asks "Is Uisuikaa an Aslan we need to concern ourselves with?"

Only if you interfere with her business. Which, these Glorious Aslan have done, by auditing the market here.

"I am also glad you can supply this thing we seek, perhaps there are other things we seek, but do not yet know of. Your price is reasonable but perhaps there is room for negotiation?
Ah, and now we come to business.

You agree to buy Spice, and this is good. You say the price is reasonable, on which I would agree, but now you ask to negotiate. This I will not do. The Dust-Spice is part of a consignment promised to Uisuikaa, and I offered it to you at her price. You do not appreciate this favour, now, I think I sell it to my friend as promised, and save myself the conversation about why the package is light.

But, I find I like you. Ambitious people are good for trade, and you intend to inconvenience a party I would like to discourage from visiting.

I will let you pay the market rate. Seventeen-five.

As I said, I am a qualified pharmacist. Also, part of the service I provide to the operators of Blackrock is to trade in things others will not, so as not to bother the open market with them.

The Dust is a fine narcotic, and the Aslan love it dearly, but it will not incapacitate them easily. I have a stock of others. I have other things that are frowned on by the gendarmes on many worlds.

Oghma ships are renown slavers, I do not doubt you have plentiful ways to capture humans. Do you have the formulary for other sophonts? I can help in this.

Kar graciously concedes Medusa's points.

I am satisfied with this price. Perhaps you can assist my friends with other such things they may need. Raid Leader Raven Sorrow you have met, and she is our expert on all things regarding the handling of such sophont trade goods. We hope to come to an agreement here and now that is agreeable.

Medusa, Raven, perhaps we should discuss whether an aerosolized delivery method is available for these spices. Medusa, you’ve mentioned a couple of times that you are a renowned chemist. Do you have, or can you formulate a pre-emptive antidote for those of us who will be exposed to the narcotic? Is there such a thing?

We’d also be interested in a gaseous poison to incapacitate or kill the occupants of vessel of interest while we deal effectively with those on the outside.

Raven says "Then Medusa it is well that we have both listened and spoken plainly". She adds "We will need immunity from the Spice as we will be exposed without protective gear but I understand that it is most potent against Aslan. I would also require that the Spice is active and persistent enough so that we may douse ourselves in it and physically carry it in on our gear and clothing in order to expose the Aslan we encounter to it in strong enough doses to be effective. If the Spice has a scent or other telltale characteristic detectable to Aslan senses I would require that this be masked or removed. I assume that, as a chemist, you could achieve these things for a fee?"

"If you have gas or Tranq incapacitant rounds formulated to be specific to Aslan we will also purchase these. One hundred rounds in whichever caliber and type you have available or grenades". Raven glances across at Kar with her face an unreadable mask and then says "Charge me whatever price you think is fair" she absently follows with "We will do business again".*

(OOC: * For Raven Broker = untrained penalty so she has no chance at haggling but that's because all her other skills slots are in creating mayhem and violence... so she's not attempting to negotiate at all - just merely fixing a consequence for later interactions).

Medusa listens to both the Oghmen before responding:

The spice part of the name is somewhat literal, as it is commonly an ingredient in the culinary arts. I could make a room spray of it, but this will tend to dilute the effect. If you intend to throw a party, this is a good way to improve the mood. If, as I suspect, you wish to befuddle some specific persons, it would be better to have them ingest a large dose directly, as is traditional.

I do have a neutralising agent for intoxicants, and I am happy to sell it to you, but I do not think you will need it. Dust Spice is, to humans, like alcohol, but to Aslan it is a stronger substance. I think you will enjoy the effects less than our visitors, should you take some.

I could certainly mask or disguise the scent and flavour. Although, I find the Aslan eager to consume the spice, which is contrary to their distaste for our usual fodder. I have some fruit, of which our feline friends are also more than somewhat partial. If you were to slice them generously, put a large portion of spice inside each piece, arrange them artfully – the Aslan are fond of elaborate presentation - and a sprinkle on top, I think you dope them easily enough. Or perhaps you prefer to offer them some fresh meat? This they are also fond of, but doping it is trickier.

Both of you speak of knock-out gas, and this I can, indeed, help you with. As you surmise, a different formula is appropriate.

One hundred rounds of catnap in standard snub calibre will be two hundred and fifty credits. Grenades I have too, only those are two hundred each. They are a very effective fumigation device, and it is wise to wear the appropriate safety equipment when entering any room so treated. I would say follow the manufacturers instructions, but unfortunately the packaging was water damaged in transit and in consequence is missing, as, indeed, are the markings on the eggs themselves, victims of the same accident.

Would you be interested in any stimulants, or performance enhancers? I understand the profession of an Oghman is the application of violence, but you are not alone in that avocation, and our feline friends have the advantage of descent from pure predators. They are bred to violence, whereas apes such as ourselves are merely expertly trained.

If there is nothing else, I suggest we return to your party. I will not stay long, but I will be happy to provide refreshments when you come to pay for your purchases. I am old-fashioned, I operate on a cash-and-carry basis. No electronic transfers.

EDIT - missing text added.
"Charge me whatever price you think is fair"

Medusa turns her dark glasses on Raven:

I always deal fairly with everyone, it is the only way to do business. Each side of a deal should get what is coming to them.
she absently follows with "We will do business again".

I hope that is so. If this thing I do not hear anything about, or have any part of, ends well I shall be happy to do business with you again. Of course, if it happens that I do hear of some escapade you are involved in, sadly this will be the end of our acquaintance.

edit ends

She presses the top of the egg-shaped device again, picks it up and returns it to her coat.

Ummiimir leads everyone back to the main room, where Medusa thanks him for his hospitality, raises a hand to Soraia, and departs.

Ummiimir visibly relaxes. Taking a glass from a server, he downs it in one.

To himself, with puzzlement: Medusa met Oghmen under my responsibility, and nobody is dead. Yet.

Turning to Kar, Raven and Tiv: She asked you to go to her office to pay and collect. This is not normal. Please, stay nice and polite when you do. It seems she wants someone dead, and you're the weapon. Don't change her mind about that order of priorities.

We'll take that recommendation...thank you.

This is Raven's jurisdiction as to how to run the war party. But as for taking the ship by outfitting and utilizing the robots for enabling actions, I could use a dozen . I'll also need two mags, 30 rounds, of Medusa's catnap snub rounds.
Would you be interested in any stimulants, or performance enhancers?...
Tiv nods to Kar and Raven

Turning to Kar, Raven and Tiv: She asked you to go to her office to pay and collect. This is not normal. Please, stay nice and polite when you do. It seems she wants someone dead, and you're the weapon. Don't change her mind about that order of priorities.
Tiv nods and, glancing to Raven and Kar, says:

She chose a sharp weapon...I dare say the sharpest Oghma has to offer!

Tiv extends his hand to Ummiimir and to Soraia and verbalizes his gratitude for the fine discussion tonight, the delicious hors d'oeuvre, and generous drink. He then returns his attention to entertaining Yumi...as long as she's still changed out of the bag lady clothes....showing her how Oghmen party!

Raven places an order with Medusa "We will take two thousand rounds of Aslan bane snub ammunition and thirty of your grenades. We might take more if they work as described and with no drawbacks. Eleven thousand Imperial. I will send you a note with my additional needs". She fishes in a pocket set into her leather bodice and draws out two slim ingots. "Two fingers of silver to open my account - one thousand Imperial each. The balance on delivery. Take them for assay if you wish".

Vetrliði Tófi replies to Kar. There is a delay (about 10 seconds), but the ship is clearly well past the orbit of the Gas Giant Dumbr, and it’s interference.

Ah, you’re back. Your ship said everyone was out of contact.

So, Raven is with you? Then you’re the one who needs to check your kegs.

Good to hear you can take my passenger off my hands. I’ve got Sigbjørn Sigmarrson with me. Him and his Fleinn-class fighter. I’ll send him over as soon as we’re in range. Lord Hallsteinn put him aboard as escort on the raid, but I don’t need the help now. He’s a damn good helmsman, and he knows Oars. Helped build one, when he was a Priest.
