2.1 Over the River and Through the Woods to Madam Eva's

Feeling adequately supplied and in no mood to wait around while Tibbius goes shopping, you set out west along the Old Svalich Road to Madam Eva’s. Yuri told you that she could be found in a gypsy camp about a mile out of town.

The day is dreary and cold. Dense fog obscures your vision as you travel the seldom-used road. The thick, dark Svalich woods crowd in upon you. Wheel ruts from gypsy carts are filled with muddy water. The fallen leaves that cover the road in a thick brown carpet crunch under your horses' hooves.

About ten minutes out of town, you cross a bridge. The river Ivlis flows under it, clear as a blue winter sky.

In half an hour, the road splits. To the right, the northern fork slants up slightly. To the left, the southern fork slants slightly downward. A cold autumn wind whistles down the northern lane, cutting icily through your clothing. Dead brown leaves rush about. There is no sound other than wind and leaves.

Vorkath / woods

The paladin tries to enjoy the fresh air. Along the way he reminiscences with the others about old battles fought and other such manly matters. While the thought of talking about the ways of the True God rises in Vorkath's mind, he knows by now that most of the party has no truck with religious ways.

"Whoa, Repentance," says the paladin to his horse, examining the forked road. Assuming they weren't told which way to take, Vorkath will look to see if one road holds more wagon tracks. His thinking is that the back-and-forth travel of the gypsies to town would make one road more heavily used than the other. If no such clues present themselves, he'll suggest the south downhill track. "I don't like the wind coming down the north road," says Vorkath.

"Or perhaps the local squirrels could tell us, eh druid?" smiles Vorkath to Robert.

Robert nods, "Indeed they could Vorkath, squirrels are quite observant. If not, they soon become dinner for another creature."

A nitpicky DM moment: I'm applying "if you didn't say it, you didn't do it" to the horses. No one mentioned bringing your horses along, either this morning when you left the Burgomaster's or when you left the Blood, so they're where you left them back at the Burgomaster's house. I'd make this another reminder, but you won't need your horses anyway.

The paladin joins the spartan to visit Madam Eva. He hopes to gain a better understanding of the gypsies by seeing their home, to help form a decision on leaving Ireena and Ismark in their care. Or perhaps invite them to stay at the house, ponders Vorkath.

The holy warrior suggests to Agrippo they ride out on their steeds to make it a quicker journey and be back well before dusk. Along the way Vorkath reminiscences with the fighter about old battles fought and other such manly matters. While the thought of talking about the ways of the True God rises in Vorkath's mind, he knows by now that Agrippo has no truck with religious ways.
Sorry, I thought in this post in "Welcome to Borovia" thread that Vorkath mentioning horses meant he was.

Sorry, I'd missed that. You have your horses. I'll add about 20 minutes to the clock to account for going back for the horses.

Carry on.

"Save your 'squirrell talk', Yuri indicated that we go right at the fork. I sense no trap from them but I trust them not, still we hope they can aid our and Ireena's cause. They say, 'better the devil you know but I say better no devil at all'",Agrippo will lead his pony up the track.

You consider which path to take. Vorkath looks to see which way the wagon tracks go, thinking that the back-and-forth travel of the gypsies to town would make one road more heavily used than the other. Indeed, the path to the north appears to be a little more heavily traveled. And yet he is not convinced of the wisdom of taking that path. "I don't like the wind coming down the north road," says Vorkath. Or perhaps, he asks Robert, “the local squirrels could tell us?"

"Save your 'squirrell talk’” snaps Agrippo. “Yuri indicated that we go right at the fork.” Whether you trust the gypsies or not, that seems to be the way to their camp. Agrippo leads his pony up the north path. The rest of you follow.

You ride or walk through the misty, dense, dark forest. It is eeily quiet. The druid notices this especially. He, more than any of you, is accustomed to the sounds of the forest: The chips and clicks of insects. The calls of birds. The soft rustling of small animals in the brush. The scratching of a deer’s antlers against a tree trunk. You hear little of this in the Svlaich woods. Only the moaning of the bitter wind, the crunch of dead leaves underfoot, and the occasional howl break the silence.

After half an hour, you start to hear a new sound: music. The air is full of the sound of bells, guitars, flutes, and at least one accordion. And singing! Boistrous, loud, bawdy singing that would make a tavern full of drunken dwarves seem like a chapel boys’ choir. You weren’t even sure it was possible to sing in these dreary woods. You can’t believe you didn’t hear this all the way from Borovia.

You turn past a bend in the path. The canopy of mist and branches overhead suddenly gives way to black clouds boiling far above. There is a clearing here. Dry, brittle grass rustles in the biting wind. On the far side of the clearing, colorful wagons are parked on the banks of a pool. Several brightly clad figures surround a large, roaring fire. One of them has an accordion, another a flute. Others are strumming stringed instruments, or slapping tambourines. Nearly all are singing.

The road seems to pass close by this camp.

Agrippo will dismount his pony and stow his shield over his shoulder trying not to look threatening as he approaches those by the fire. Not used to cordially greeting such wandering vagrants, Agrippo will try to summon all his charisma in a big smile and open hands warming over the flames, "are such happy-clappy songs warm my heart as much as this fire in this damp and dreary place". Agrippo will whistle softly but the only thing that comes out is some tavern tune sung by a Mistress Cher about 'gypsies, tramps and thieves...'

Vorkath too dismounts. Smiling his most charismatic smile, he'll engage the nearest gypsy.

Good day to you, friend. We come to help Borovia. Yuri sent us with words we would be welcomed. We seek wise Madam Ava's guidance."

You ride into camp. Vorkath and Agrippo dismount. Agrippo stows his shield over his shoulder, tries not to look threatening, and summons all his charisma as he smiles and warms his hands over the flames. ”Such happy-clappy songs warm my heart as much as this fire in this damp and dreary place,” he says.

Vorkath, smiling his most charismatic smile, engages the nearest gypsy—a fat man with short hair and a scraggly black beard. “Good day to you, friend,” says Vorkath in greeting. “We come to help Borovia. Yuri sent us with words we would be welcomed. We seek wise Madam Eva's guidance."

“Welcome! It was fated that you would visit this humble camp. Madam Eva foretold your coming. She awaits you.” He leads you to a tent and opens the flap, bidding you to enter. He bows with a flouish and leaves.

Within, all is dimly illuminated in pools of red light. A small, low table stands across from the doorway, covered in a black velvet cloth. Glints of light seem to flash from a crystal ball on the table as a hunched figure peers into its depths. She speaks. Her voice crackles like dry weeds. Her tone soars and falls like the wind outside. “At last you have arrived!” Her sudden cackling laughter bursts like lightning from her withered lips.

She turns to address each of you. “Welcome Vorkath Tsaridian, once and future savage, child of no parents, believer in the true faith, fellow seer of visions. Greetings Agrippo, sergeant and soldier. Fourteen, hm? My, you have been a busy man!” she cackles. “Well met, Robert Ashton, child of Order and of Chaos, of Silver and of green. And hail to thee, Iluq of the Mushroom Maze, of the Dark and the Deep, shunned of your kind.”

“The past is clouded glass; the future is an undiscovered country. But Madam Eva has a polishing cloth and a passport!” She lays out a set of cards on the table before her. Piercing eyes look at you from under a wrinkled, grey brow.

“Would you know your fates?” the old lady asks.

Iluq, dark elf

Iluq cannot help but crack a bit of a grin at Madam Eva's greeting to each of them.
He bows his head to her, "Madam Eva your talents are obvious. My fate is my fate, and I would have you speak what you can see of it for me."

Fortune telling has no place in Vorkath's religion. He smiles at Madam Eva courteously and says: "I respect your mystic vision. I know one day I will be with the True God. I am content with that knowledge."

"If you can see into his future then you'll be doing well, elves live long and lasting lives...",Agrippo tries a jest at the Madam, then mutters under his breath at Iluq whilst nudging him forward, "unless she sees short and not so sweet?".

Agrippa is intrigued by these gypsies and the welcome received, not sure if this is a staged plan to lure us in or truly destiny calls us here to bring us revelations or fears? He will wait to see how Iluq reacts to the theatrics' of Madam Eva.

Iluq and Agrippo welcome a view into their futures, but Vorkath will have none of it. “I know one day I will be with the True God,” he tells her. “I am content with that knowledge."

Madam Eva nods solemnly. “As you wish, Guardian of Truth. Wait outside if you wish no knowledge of what is to come.” She pauses as Vorkath leaves the tent.

To the rest of you she speaks: “The taroka tell much to those who know how to listen. Observe!” She lays nine cards in a cross on the velvet-draped table in front of you:

The points to the cards at the top of the cross. "The Strength card is a symbol of great power," she says. "It tells of a powerful force for good and protection against the forces of darkness. It lies with a fallen prince of old. The brother of dark is light and he rests in this place. The suit of Swords forebodes ill. It is a dark shadow of evil over that place. You fight under its influence there."

Her bony finger moves clockwise, indicating the Hermit and the Five of Wands. "This tells of history. Knowledge of the ancient may help you understand a foe. You should seek for a carefully hidden place of great worldly wealth. I see a blazing fire protecting the place. The Wand sustains your strength here, but holds you from your victory, taking more time than it otherwise would."

Madam Eva continues to the bottom of the cross, where the Queen of Wands accompanies The Devil. "This symbolizes the object of your search! Ah! I see darkness and evil behind this card! It is a powerful man whose enemy is light, and whose powers are beyond mortality! The Queen of Wands reveals where he may be found. This is in the mother's place. This place, too, is under the influence of the Wand. "

She then regards the Sun and the Ten of Cups. "This card is good for you. It is a card of power and strength. It tells of a weapon of light—a weapon with a vengeance. This is in a place of dizzying heights that all are loathe to travel. The road winds ever upwards and the rocks themselves live here! There is a very good influence there. If you are there, the powers of good will aid you."

"And here, at the center of all, is the root card," she tells you, indicating the card in the center of the cross. "Out of darkness and chaos, this card finds the reason and foundation for darkness and chaos. This card shows the purpose of all things. It is the key to life and death and else beyond. This card tells of a tool of evil. Darkness surrounds and protects this tool, giving comfort to black hearts and protection from good."

"Such be your fates," she concludes. "Have you any other questions for Madam Eva?"

"The Earth groans waiting for the 'sons of god' to be revealed",Agrippo quotes some ancient text, trying to sound 'Vorkathian', stroking his beard"Mayhaps in this dark and dreary Borovia, destiny aids us with these hidden messages to lift darks' blight on this cursed place"

Then coming to his usual self he will guffaw loudly and slapping Iluq on the back declare, "blah, black hearts and living rocks indeed, I swear she almost took me in there Iluq, by the gods wish I had the skills of the elves to resist these charms"

Then after a pause he will ask Madam Eva of Ireena, her fate, why this Strahd bites her, could the gypsies aid her plight, does she like tall men with black beards...

"Tell me of yours gods, gypsy friends," says Vorkath to the gypsies outside, while he is waiting for the others to receive their heathen prophesies.

"Many find enlightenment down a different path..." The paladin sees many souls in this vagabond community who could benefit from the True God's wisdom. If they would only listen. Vorkath tries to open their ears.

Agrippo asks Madam Eva of Ireena, her fate, why Strahd bites her, whether the gypsies could aid her plight, and whether she likes tall men with black beards.

“Is she woman or girl?” replies the crone, eyes tightly shut. “Does the night fear the sun, or hunger for it? Is not the moon hungry too?”

She opens her eyes, which look into Agrippo’s. “Madam Eva loves tall men with black beards!” she cackles. “Come and sit next to granny young man!”

Her mischievous brown-toothed grin gives way to a look of seriousness “We would accept her, of course. As for aid, we have a potion that would help you in your quest. It is an elixir of great power against the master of the dark. Alas, it is very costly and difficult to create. Would you be interested in such a potion?”

Outside, Vorsyin looks for converts.

Robert wonders for a moment. Ah, riddles....hate 'em. Would this potion be one for us in order to increase our power or one for the dark lord to help destroy him?

"You would drink the potion," she answers. "It gives both protection against and power over the vampyr."

"Is such a thing of worth to you?"
