Re: Pulling at the Root of Evil

#161 Post by Magnus »

The party smartly realizes that any attempt at parley with insane evil beasts is futile. They move quickly to attack the seemingly treacherous beasts.

However, the manticores are smart enough to anticipate the party's attack. They quickly unleash their spikes at the party's front line at the first twitch of combat. Gaerys, Blue, and Kjelti, who form the party's front line, are targeted with four each. Gaerys and Kjelti are each grazed by a spike, while three tear away flesh from the already wounded bear.

[DAMAGE: Gaerys: -1, Kjelti: -3, BLUE -15!]

Vorsyin pulls a hollow glass sphere covered by a soft rag from his belt pouch. He rubs it vigorously to generate static electricity, and smashes it in his hand it with a sudden shout. A forked malestrom 40' long and 10' flashes into being, engulfing the two manticores. The air reeks with singed fur as the creatures roar furiously with pain. They remain standing, though not for long as Gaerys, Hollis, Antheris and Blue all charge forward, joined by a bounding Ethan. The heroes attack furiously, reducing the once-fearsome manticores to a pile of fur, blood and flesh.

The group has a half-second to breathe before a wave of fear engulfs them. As they look around, they realize that they have charged into the belly of the beast....

The first foe to move is a ghastly hill giant, hunchbacked, twisted, and with but one good eye. He bears long, black-bladed axe, which seems too finely crafted to have been the giants' handiwork. This giant, the Keeper, was hugging the east wall of the chamber - too savvy to dive into the initial fray. He, along with an albino ape with long teeth, turn the corner and attack Kjelti and Vorsyin. They pass a corpse of another such ape, who was obviously killed by Vorsyin's arcane assault.

The red-eyed ape, scarred from Vorsyin's earlier fireball, bounds forward first and jumps on the shield-maiden. Kjelti takes a defensive posture* and easily deflects the vicious assault of the ape.

[Total defense permits a -4 to AC. House rule.]

The ruthless Keeper, seeing an opportunity to bully an unarmored opponent, charges Vorsyin. With a heavy swing, the black-bladed axe tears through plunges into the flesh of the mage.

[Vorsyin: -12]

From the open hallway in the north pour a company of giants and hornfeet, both those who had obviously been positioned there as guards, as well as survivors from the first waive of attack. Two giants - one horribly scarred by Vorsyin's fireball - and six hornfeet come from the north and split the group who had attacked the manticores from Kjelti and the mage.

Now fully in the chamber, the party can see two doors to the southeast - one against the south wall and one against the east wall -- the latter door now clearly the origin of the screams of prisoners!!!

But from the southern door pour another group of five hornfeet - lead by a particularly large savage, clad in bone armor with a hill giant skull for a helmet. He bears a finely crafted bronze axe that seems to shimmer with cold.

To the south, a smell of sulfur waifs towards the party. Squinting through a dark hallway, the party seems to make out the flicker of flame and the movement of enormous - even by giant standards - bodies. The party also hears the dragging of a heavy iron object across the stone floor.

Kjelti (51/56)

In case the warrior woman wins initiative: she glides and pirouettes through the gap between ape and keeper, spinning to keep her shield toward the ape and (first attack) backhand cutting at the Keeper's knee. In case the first attack hits home, and she gets where she wants to be - behind the Keeper, shield fending the ape - then her second blow will be an upward penetrating thrust. Otherwise, she will strike the Keeper wherever she can, screaming to the mage "Cast something! OR run away!"

Kjelti THACO 14 (+2 Claymore, spec) atk [1d20+5] = 3+5 = 8 dmg SM [2d4+6] = 8+6 = 14 / L [2d8+6] = 15+6 = 21 hits AC 6 :(

Kjelti THACO 14 (+2 Claymore, spec) atk [1d20+5] = 4+5 = 9 dmg SM [2d4+6] = 8+6 = 14 / L [2d8+6] = 3+6 = 9 hits AC 5

NOT THE TIME for bad rolls ...

Initiative: [1d6] = 1
Ugh. Please tell me that this is one of the campaigns where the DM rolls party initiative and the above doesn't count because I shouldn't have rolled. Or that I shouldn't have rolled before Vorsyin can declare actions, so it doesn't count. Or it's a practice roll. I'll take any excuse. ;)

Gaerys takes quick stock of the party's immediate situation and goals. Situation: Facing another large group of nasties with more on the way. Vorsyin in deep trouble and separated from most of the party. Prisoners on the other side of the current batch of nasties. Goals, in no particular order: Keep Vorsyin alive. Rescue the prisoners. Get out of here alive. Kill giants.

His next action depends on whether Vorsyin survives the next giant attack. Without its spell-slinger, the party faces very poor odds against the forces currently arrayed against us, let alone what seems to be coming. If Vorsyin is killed, Gaerys will lead a fighting retreat up the stairs. If Vorsyin does survive, the party needs a way to get Vorsyin and Kjelti to the other side of the giants' battle line. In that case, Gaerys will try to spearhead an attack in the middle of the giant line, to the extent he can do so without letting himself become surrounded, in the hopes of either opening a hole through which Vorsyin and Kjelti can run or creating a weak spot through which they could fight. Gaerys will at all times try to protect the party's access to the stairs.

Attack roll:
Giantbane (vs. true giant): [1d20+3] = 11+3 = 14 Damage: [1d12x2] = 1x2 = 2+10 (11 damage vs. hornfeet)
Good news: hit! Bad news: minimum damage. Good news: Gaerys's minimum damage against giants and giant-class creatures is still non-trivial.

Vorsyin watches with a smug satisfaction as the two manticores are first blasted then killed off by brute force. His satisfaction quickly changes to fear as the party is split up and attacked.

The attack of the keeper leave him in pain and he knows that he has only a few moments to live unless he acts quickly. Almost by instinct he casts Burning Hands at the Keeper. He hopes the flames will distract the giant long enough for him to drink the potion of hill giant control and seize control over the giant before the giant kills him.

In case I am not around, Vorsyin's next action will be as described above, the hill giant potion and hopefully taking control of the Keeper)

I absolutely roll initiative for the party - if the monsters win, I can start working on the post. I actually flip the higher is better rule, so that the die indicates the segment in which each side will act.

In that case, please go with my roll. ;)

I can never keep straight which campaigns want players to roll initiative and which DMs do it themselves. I usually ask players to roll but end up doing it myself at least half the time.

Hollis will follow Gaerys' lead: either attack to break through to Vorsyin or retreat up the stairs if he's already down before Hollis acts. He'll defend the right flank of the party and attack whichever Hornfoot is closest/trying to turn their flank.

Ethan will try to bound over/past the giants to charge the enemies going after K and Vor. He wants to reach the keeper (or at least the ape) if he could get to it. If that plan is too crazy, he'll attack a giant, then jump on to get to the other side.

StumbleRoll(must gethigherthan 16): [1d100]= 1

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 20+4 = 24 damage [1d12+4] = 12+4 = 16

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 19+4 = 23 damage [1d12+4] = 8+4 = 12

So he's gonna go down/stumble. What a nice set of attack rolls, though! :(

Antheris (32/41) and Blue (6/48, AC 2)

Injured as he is, Blue's indomitable ursine spirit surges even as Antheris shapechanges back to human form and barks an order at Blue to retreat.

With his shapechange complete, Antheris pulls out his best mistletoe, crushes it between his meaty palms and exhales across them sending the essence toward the White Ape (casts Charm Person or Mammal on the White Ape (80 foot range)), and tosses his potion of extra-healing to Blue (who can hopefully will catch it, crush it, and drink it). If Antheris knows that the potion manuever is not wise or Blue won't pull it off, he will wait until next round to pour the potion into the frustrated polar bear's maw.

Potion of Extra-Healing: [1d8] = 6, [1d8] = 8, [1d8] = 4 + 3 21 points of healing!

Facing a renewed threat, the party acts first against the giant defenses.

Kjelti tries her best to fend of the vicious assault of the Keeper. Desperately, she attempts a slice at the thuggish giant's achilles tendon, but is beaten to the swing with a swift kick to the stomach. The wind is knocked out of her, rendering her attacks feeble at best.

[above is just narration of two shitty rolls...no special mechanic in effect.]

The carnivorous ape sees an opening. It takes the shield-maiden's shoulder in its crushing grip, deeply bruising tendon and muscle. Kjelti is lucky to fend off the other paw with her shield. However, the ape follows with a deep bite to the already wounded shoulder of the warrior, crunching through armor and into the flesh beneath.

[Kjelti takes 10 damage! Again, no special mechanic in effect.]

Vorsyin touches his thumbs together, and a sheet of flame explodes from his fingers. The mage attempts to direct the flames into the one eye of the keeper. Unfortunately, the mage misses the mark, but the flames do burn the bald scalp of the vicious giant.

[Vorsyin given a chance to roll to hit AC 0 for a "called shot"...rolls a 6  ]

Encouraged and enraged, the keeper takes another swing at Vorsyin. His one eye widens with the anticipation of inflicting more pain on the mage. His enthusiasm is too great, however, as the backswing of the axe catches the buttressing of the dungeon hallway. The ring of metal on stone reverberates loudly in the mage's ears as the giant clumsily tries to recover.

[NATURAL 1! Vorsyin has a free action next round!!! Will drink potion and try to evade attack if no further action stated.]

On the other front, the remainder of the party takes the fight to the giant force splitting the party...the hornfeet and giants charge back at them!

Ethan attempts to hurdle the giants with his boots of springing. In his eagerness to save the mage, he fails to spot a pool of manticore blood on the floor. He slips as he jumps, landing just in front of the two hill giants. The giants move to beat him to a pulp, but the nimble warrior strikes first. The air glows with the flame of Ethan's blade as he slices the inside of one giant's thigh, severing a major artery. That giant collapses in a geyser of blood!

[DM awards an auto-kill on the natural 20+max damage roll!!!]
Ethan then turns to the other giant, who had been already scorched by the fireball. Ethan's strike across its belly wounds it severely. Fighting for its life, it strikes back in a rage. Ethan narrowly ducks out of the way of the smash of its heavy stone club.

Two hornfeet in the middle of the formation drive forward - also to attack Ethan. The veteran warrior shows his quality, as he easily parries away the spear and bronze sword used by his attackers.

Gaerys and Hollis attack the oncoming hornfeet, on the northern and southern flanks, respectively. Giantbane neatly cleaves off the arm of the second hornfoot from the top. It bellows in pain and feebly strikes back. The ranger pushes the blow aside with ease. However, the hornfoot immediately to the north sees an opening -- it jabs a harpoon deep between the ranger's ribs!

[Gaerys - 16 damage! (NAT 20 2x damage)]

Hollis commands the southern flank, landing a solid blow on a hornfoot in front of him. The three hornfeet nearest him strike back -- stone clubs used by those adjacent to him, stone-tipped spears used by those in the back. One hornfoot in the small group around their leader breaks rank and also charges the cleric. The warrior priest manages to fend off two of the four attacks, but a club smash to the side and a harpoon in the gut leave the cleric wounded.

Hollis: 14 damage!

The remainder of the gang of hornfeet, including the bone armor-clad leader, take up a strategic position between the hallway in which Vorsyin and Kjelti are trapped and the remainder of the party.

The druid casts his enchantment upon the Keeper's horrid pet. Though the spell took too long to cast to prevent the attack on Kjelti, it seizes hold of the ape's vicious mind. The carnivorous ape is now under the control of the druid!

Blue scurries up several stairs, away from the action. The druid moves to administer a healing potion to his faithful companion, but makes it only to the foot of the stairs.

[Spell (which was effective!) takes 4 segments to cast and you acted in seg 3. You can keep the good healing rolls, though. You get to command ape next round.]

To the south, the dragging of metal on stone becomes louder. The party members can see two pairs of firey red eyes down the hallway...the space behind the secret door also rumbles with heavy feet...

OOC: Traveling, so this is brief.

Gaerys attacks the middle of the giant/hornfoot line, preferring giants as his target.

Giantbane (vs. true giant): [1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18 Damage: [1d12x2] = 10x2 = 20+10

Antheris, Blue, and a Carnivorous Ape!

Antheris will continue with his action to heal Blue with the potion of extra-healing.

Blue will then position himself at the base of the stairs, with Antheris behind him preparing to cast spells from behind his animal companions fearsome cover.

Will Antheris and Blue be able to have any other actions this round, or get started toward them?

Tentative: Antheris feels the control over the carnivorous ape that his charm has given him and calls the ape to him, hoping it will help blaze a path through the hornfoots on which Kjelti and Vorsyin will be able to capitalize.

Antheris, Blue, and a Carnivorous Ape (part II)

(Making a second post instead of editing prior)

After taking his position at the bottom of the stairs, Blue stands ready to attack any enemy that comes within his reach, while providing cover for his druid.

Antheris bellows above the din of battle, "Come this way, Ape!!!"

He then prepares to use his ring of charisma to charm as many of the hornfoots as possible (21 HD, I know this will probably be next round).

Kjelti (42?/56) Magnus: I hope I understand your cumulative -hp notation?

Gasping air, the blonde swordmaid realizes that the ape has desisted from mauling her, and that the giant before her remains oblivious of her blade. She attacks the giant.

Kjelti THACO 14 (+2 Claymore, spec) atk [1d20+5] = 12+5 = 17 dmg SM [2d4+6] = 3+6 = 9 / L [2d8+6] = 15+6 = 21 hits AC -3

Kjelti THACO 14 (+2 Claymore, spec) atk [1d20+5] = 4+5 = 9 dmg SM [2d4+6] = 5+6 = 11 / L [2d8+6] = 9+6 = 15 and AC 5 :?

Concerned by the imminent arrival of yet more reinforcements, Ethan slashes at the giants in front of him, then leaps for the stairs, thinking they might provide a means of retreat, if the door above isn't too terribly damaged.

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 5+4 = 9 damage [1d12+4] = 3+4 = 7

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 16+4 = 20 damage [1d12+4] = 9+4 = 13

StumbleRoll(must gethigherthan 16): [1d100]= 24

Whew!

Once up there, he wants to see if the stairs lead to an actual exit... Edit, with the map, and realizing his action was redundant, if that's ok.

Once at the bottom of the stairs, he wants to slam the secret door, and wedge it shut somehow. Is "spiking" it something that can be done quickly?

Hollis will try to kill the Hornfoot in front of the door where the prisoners are located that he hit the round before.

Melee attack on Hornfoot: [1d20+2] = 15+2 = 17, damage: [1d6+3] = 5+3 = 8

EDITED to clarify target.

Gaerys will try to use those benches (I presume) at the north end of the hall to keep the nasties from flanking him. He will also try to keep the route to the stairs open.
