Eshargamelat has the “metal monster” brought for assessment next. Its crate is lowered and opened, revealing a large mythological animal in enamelled and inlaid metal. The thing is a fierce hunting-beast, with a built-in saddle. Predominantly gold, with white and purple panels, the creature is posed ready to spring into action.

It is soon plain to Remington that this is not a statue, as Eshargamelat thought, but a robot, or vehicle. The limbs and other joints are designed for movement and, while certainly heavy, it is not solid. The shell is clean, with no sign of encrustation. Eshargamelat informs Remington that the object arrived as it is, brought by the sea-scavengers. It seems possible to Remington that the device was contained within something else, an ancient building or vessel, that protected it until the salvors broke in. It may have been inundated during recovery, but it is, perhaps, repairable.
Arnwulf Goren Lugersen
and does not contest his 9KCr bid for the “large metal monster”.
Intrigued by the politeness of the auction. He is much more used to shouted bids and furious hand raising and at the slave auctions, demonstrations of 'a full set of teeth' or implanted augmentations. Still finding his place in the ship's diplomacy and political manoeuvring on behalf of Lord Hallstein, he coughs to interject as the auction introduces a lull.

"If I may Captain, honoured guests. I and some of the crew would like to enter a bid, private as it were. To obtain the larger Panthera robotic. It is not our place to claim trove set aside for trade but we may, if protocol allows, raise our own bids. "

He looks for an affirmative nod and undoes a pouch of crisp white pearls, harvested from Marduk deep sea clams. they are valued circa $500cr each.

"There are twenty in there to match the valuation reserve and more, $10,000cr worth. And to show we are not merely trifling in this, I will up my ante to $11,500cr.

It is with you Sir."
he says with a nod to Ummiimir, expecting him not to object but to put in a raise, daring him probably with his audacity to do so.

Arnwulf: uses Persuade skill [2d6+1]=8+1=9

I will raise any bid if necessary but not more than $17,500cr or 35 of my pearls. If the envoy wishes to take the relic for twice its value, then he can have it.

Tivali is quite amused by Arnwulf’s interest and bid, so he waits for Arnwulf's proposal to sort itself out with Ummimiir first. When the discussion returns to payment, he takes up from Ummimiir's last words to him, "Perhaps for services already contracted?"

Ah yes, on behalf of the Jarl Hallstien, I have retained the services of Ummimiir and Soraia for the amount of 20,000C. Kar, please deduct those credits from Ummiir's cash payment, and I will inform the Jarl that I have exercised his authority to reduce your tribute to him by that amount.

Kar, if you will appoint someone to lead the next negotiation, I will bring in Fezlae to have first deal on the slaves. She may wish to look over the hard wares, but her interest is mostly in the squishy merchandise. This is the merchant I previously informed you from which I purchased computer processors. She will also have a tribute deduction as payment for said slaves. 10,000C worth.

As the auction progresses Raven broods nearby with a warrior's apparent disinterest in the trading. She warns Remington “Have a care that the Úlfhéðnar don't carry you off!” She turns back to emphasise “They are fierce but also devious and can change their shape - so be alert!”

As the bidders pass on the sword (with uncorroded blade and inlaid hilts) and the boarding axe (with the polycarbon shaft) she smiles to herself and collects up both from the displayed loot. Shouldering both weapons she seeks out Kar and handing both over to him states “These raised no bids and yet we can trade them up for a coin of much higher value. Sigmundr fights with an axe and Ingunn wields a blade. They will be more than impressed with booty gifts from the Skiparre himself. Sigmundr led his group well during the raid and Ingunn always put the APC where I needed it to be - I'm making her Corporal”.

When Arnwulf makes his bid Raven immediately reacts giving her support with the emphatic “Já! Winning bid!” and thumps a nearby crate for percussive emphasis.

Replying to Sal and Aedzveis she says “Then the oldest Ásgeir here awaits your visit and there is also good ale”.

Then Raven suddenly blocks Sal's progress using her left arm as a barrier between her and a crate while deliberately extending her empty right hand towards Aedzveis.

Raven extends her hand to usher Sal to the tour of the Serpent.

Remington smiles at the unexpected concern, or at least the concern he chooses to read beneath the warning.

"Fierce and devious? Now where have I met someone like that before? Don't worry raid leader, I've had more than enough of being carried off already. I've no desire to repeat the experience. Any future carriers might not find me nearly as entertaining as my current ones."

Remington hopes that the apparent good tone of the sales will be enough to excuse his glibness. As Raven ushers Sal and Aedzveis into the Serpent Remington falls into line behind, ready to provide color commentary from a more "below decks" perspective.

Kar acknowledges Arnwulf’s bid and Raven’s enthusiastic endorsement.

A fine project for you Arnwulf"

Speaking to Sal.

I would like to withdraw the lot of swords from the sale as a gift to my Ships compliment and Raiders, I would ask that you withdraw your bid, for I would not wish to bet against you

After the bidding ends, Kar speaks to Arnwulf,

You seem interested in the auction, accompany me to the bidding for the slaves. It is always helpful to have another's opinion

Speaking to Tiv privately afterward and when appropriate, he would require the agreement to pay from lord Hallstiens share to be certified in writing. For the ship's log etc.

Seeking out Ashildr on the way to the slaves, Kar asks for her to find those who show some skill in restoring and inscribing weaponry in the Warband, to assist in making gifts for all the Raiders and Crew. Pleased but unsurprised that Raid Leader Raven had already had such an idea, Kar will happily take Raven Sorrows' advice on what the inscription should be and to whom they should go.

Tivalli says, "Of course, Kar. I have his certified letter right here. I will send it to you and to the ship if you'd like. Perhaps I should have thought of that prior to this...my apologies. I would also sign an affidavit to the effect that the money is spent once both transactions are complete. You will notice on the document that I overspent my allowance by 5,000C. For that, I will answer to our Jarl. Considering the retainer of the services of Ummimiir and some resulting information I just received from Soraia, risking his displeasure is a chance worth taking.

Don’t forget, Hallstein is purchasing 6 tons of computer equipment worth 25,000 credits from Sal. Please deduct that from his split. Serpent,
he looks up at the hold's ceiling., if you will, please surround us with a cone of noise...just static to interfere with any eavesdroppers...leave us to speak in a cone of silence if you will.

Looking back to Kar, Please keep the slaves sold to Fezlae in our cell in the hangar until the Aslans can have a look at them. I need to have them sold once, but have them seen twice. We can deliver them to Fezlae after the Aslans have a look at them. Having them sold when the Aslans arrive should whet their appetite a little more for later dealing with following Aesgirr Skippare's. After adjudicating the sale of slaves and our discussion with "Her Words" something-or-other, he rolls his eyes, can we hold a strategy session on the bridge? I'd like to have Raven and Ashildr come along. Would you be amenable to having Arnwulf and Leon in for some very sensitive discussion? I understand Arnwulf is new to the crew...and a pick up...not selected by Hallstien. But he was once an up and coming Corsair. I leave the decision to you, as to whether he can be trusted with secretive potential raid plans. By the way, I really like his intestinal fortitude in bidding on the monster mount. After these years, he's quite Aesgirr still.

After this private discussion with Kar, he will seek out Arnwulf and tell him the same thing. I would greatly enjoy spending some downtime helping you renovate your new machine. You may be able to get this station to fabricate much of what you need to make it functional again. I believe their tech is sufficient. Well played! He, once again, gives Arnwulf and appraising look...one of approval.

After the bidding ends, Kar speaks to Arnwulf,

"You seem interested in the auction, accompany me to the bidding for the slaves. It is always helpful to have another's opinion".
"As you wish Skippare." he accepts though inwardly the trading of people as livestock is not something he is too comfortable with. Of all the Oghma traits and culture, slavery itself would be one he might choose to abolish. He is pragmatic though. As in the case of Eno & Remington, many slaves are given much better lives even in indentured servitude than they might get otherwise. Serving aboard a prized space galleon, making a name for the ship and by default bringing honour to our Lord Hallstein and the God's of the Nine Realms, well they really ought to be thankful.

He is intrigued by the Aslan though. He has no direct experience with them but his prejudices relegate them (along with the Vargr) as just evolved cat-people or dog-people. These though are more lion like than kitty-kat.

He has heard the rumour or suggestion of 'an Aslan astrogator' serving on the bridge of another ship. Part of him would pinpoint raiding such ship, should it exist, to capture said astrogator and out him to work on the Cunning Serpent might be just a typical, Oghman endeavour.

He follows Kar to the slave hangars when bid.
After this private discussion with Kar, he will seek out Arnwulf and tell him the same thing. "I would greatly enjoy spending some downtime helping you renovate your new machine. He, once again, gives Arnwulf and appraising look...one of approval.
"Sure, more hands on the better. I was thinking to include Handson and my other crew who are currently scaffolding the exterior and prepping the ship. It will give them a share in ownership of a project and build a team mentality. All the better when one might ride the beast into battle."

Handson is one of the slave crew, not sure who the second fellow was without checking archives.

Ummiimir’s smile fades when Arnwulf interrupts with a higher bid, but his annoyance passes, and the smile soon returns:

It would be foolish for me to try and come between a warrior and his prize, especially as I only hoped to earn a favour by selling it to a contact. A favour gained at the cost of an enemy is no profit.
Enjoy your project. If you want assistance, I can arrange a consultation with a specialist.

Sal accepts Kar’s withdrawal of the blades from sale with a shrug:

There are only two or three interesting blades among them anyway. Let me record their data, and I will be happy.

Both accept Kar and Raven's invitation to the Mead Hall. They take the opportunity to study the small part of the interior of the Serpent that they travel through. Ummiimir appears to have a casual interest, as though visiting an exhibition, while Sal is fascinated by the decorative panels lining the corridors.

Remington throws a look at Raven. As far as he can tell he's not essential to the negotiations, but he doesn't want to wander off if he's expected to be around to haggle, but the haggling seems to be going on just fine without him. He's also aware that, having announced his status and thus value, he might be in for a second round of "forced onboarding."

"I'm always happy to help. I just need to make sure everything is finished here first. I am, nominally, responsible for telling my captain what these things are worth after all."
Raven nods ambiguously at Remington and distractedly adds "The sale of our loot seems to proceed well enough".

She shifts her posture and ends up marginally closer to Aedzveis than Remington is. She states with casual neutrally "No matter how much Captain Scarlett is going to love him my Seer is not for sale".

For sale? Nah, we don’t buy people.

Looking Remington over: No offence, but you don’t look like you’d fit in on the Rosethorn. Corsair crew, see, and a small one. Everyone fights. You don’t look like a killer, and Sal... Captain Scarlett’s our thinker.

The Captain will want to talk with you though, pick your brains. Her tongue lolls out as she "smiles": Not literally.

Bet you’ll be glad of a chance to talk about the worlds beyond this cluster too, yeah?

Tiv and Soraia follow along, engaged in some quiet conversation of their own.

Seeking out Ashildr on the way to the slaves, Kar asks for her to find those who show some skill in restoring and inscribing weaponry in the Warband, to assist in making gifts for all the Raiders and Crew. Pleased but unsurprised that Raid Leader Raven had already had such an idea, Kar will happily take Raven Sorrows' advice on what https://www.thesaurus.com/the inscription should be and to whom they should go.

Áshildr needs little seeking out, when Kar turns to go in search of her she is nearby, unobtrusively accompanying the group.

I will have the crate taken to the Arming Room, Dagný can assess them there. Þórir’s the lad to do your engraving, I’ll send him to look things over, make a plan.
Handson is one of the slave crew, not sure who the second fellow was without checking archives.
Gris is the other slave Engineer. He'd be delighted to know that had successfully faded into the background enough to become nameless :)

The warband, who have been enjoying Tiv’s hospitality moderately, are called to order by Sigmundr as the ofiicers and their guests enter the Mead Hall. It is likely someone notified him of their approach.

Having given a formal welcome the youngsters relax and invite the newcomers to do the same, plying them with drinking horns and laden plates.

Sal and Aedzveis happily join the party, but it is plain that the young warriors are surprised and perplexed by the appearance of a Vargr among them, uncertain quite what she is and how she ought to be treated. Aedzveis seems amused by their reaction, and their attempts to “style it out”.

She calls Remington to their table: Remington, tell us, do all Oghmen to bring their pups to work?

Sal slaps Aedzveis’ thigh gently and tells her (again): Be nice.

Ummiimir and Soraia politely take what they are offered, but consume little. Ummiimir talks to anyone he meets, while Soraia stands quietly to one side.

Fezlae’s arrival is announced after a short while. She is accompanied by a male Vargr identified as Udzkae, and both are registered as crew of the Tovulldzong Ozhuen.

Eno sends a notification to the senior crew that she has prepared the purchased cargo for collection and transport and is ready to display the next lots.

Raven gives Sigmundr an acknowledging nod then approaches Ummiimir and apparently attempts diplomacy “Hah, you know when to yield - that is a skill I do not know. However, mending the Dragon Lords' robot will entertain our crew well as the Serpent swims between worlds. I see you wear a favour from my Jarl so welcome aboard”.

She takes a filled plate over and puts it down in front of Remington saying "Feed your inner spirits, Many Names, and learn from these our guests". Whether she heard the Vargr's comment about the warband is unclear nevertheless Raven turns her swagger on Aedzveis and looks her in the eye “Well, if you're not going to try to steal my Seer then it seems that we won't find out the answer - at least today”. She holds the look as she then slowly smiles “So best we quaff ale. Welcome to the Warriors Hall”. Turning her dark eyes on Sal she says "Drink deep Captain - but hold yourself back a little for later".

Draining her ale Raven moves to greet the new arrivals.

Then, pausing as she sets down her cup, she seeks out Sigmundr "Yngvildr is not in the mead hall. Has she some other duty?"

Tiv grasps turns from the cargo hold upon hearing Fezlae and her party have arrived. He strides out to greet them then escorts them to to meet Kar.

Skippare Kar, Fezlae…the slaver, my friend and Hallstein’s new supplier of key computer parts. Please treat with her fairly…but don’t sell cheaply. We need her business to pay the Jarl’s split…

Fezlae, we can sell you people today. But we will need to keep the slaves here for a few hours. Non-standard I know, so we can have our warband deliver them to your ship later…no charge, as to inconvenience you as little as possible.[\dialog]

Ummiimir, with his habitual bland smile, replies:

I see no point in conflict where cooperation is more useful. It was not something I wanted for myself anyway, so I save my money for the other Captains who follow in your wake.

You are correct, I do bear the sign of having earned Lord Hallsteinn’s friendship. Another reason to avoid petty squabbles with his trusted people.

When Raven approaches Aedzveis noticeably becomes more alert, her tail standing out stiffly. As Raven speaks she relaxes, and, on being welcomed, her tail starts wagging gently to the right. She raises a horn and toasts A successful hunt.

Sal takes a drink from her horn and fails to suppress a sour expression.

Aedzveis cuts in: The Captain doesn’t normally drink beer, especially not stuff with bags of flavour, and she’s still on duty, so… Got any tea?

Sigmundr tells Raven: She rotated down to guard duty, swapped with Stáli, so he could see the Sinners. I think she lost a bet.

Fezlae and Udzkae are business-like Vargr. Where Aedzveis is garishly dressed, they are in plain, human-friendly, suits. Both are cheerful and friendly as they greet the senior crew.

Fezlae introduces Udzkae as the ship’s medic, here to examine the merchandise and assist her in valuing them. He has a portable device consisting of a computer analysis unit, worn by a shoulder strap, and a hand-held scanner. The hand-held unit appears to have several functions, including taking blood samples. A screen on it provides relevant results.

Remington recognises the logo of the SuSAG mega-corporation on both units of the device.

It takes several minutes to calibrate the scanner to each subject and analyse them, during which the two Vargr discuss the results already obtained in their own language, and light-heartedly discuss them with the crew, joking in Imperial.

Eno is a constant attendant, and provides translation when the Vargr talk to the prisoners, asking them about their health and experience. The two seem more like a recruiter from an employment agency and a friendly healthcare worker than the alien slave traders you know them to be. This breezy demeanour works well, putting the prisoners somewhat at ease, despite the unsettling strangeness of being examined by wolf-people.

The criteria for pricing seem to be health and age, but, interestingly, ill-health is just as valued as fitness. The two who speak Galanglic cause a small flurry of Vargr discussion that seems to result in reducing their valuation.

Fezlae makes immediate offers for one tranche of the prisoners. The offer is generally in line with Kar’s estimate of their value if taken to Oghma, with some exceptions.

Apilsha male age 21 UPP:585957 apprentice Gunsmith Frozen 2.5k {Kar believes his trade might make him worth more to another buyer, though his poor physique might make him fragile and potentially expensive to run.}
Uselli male age 32 UPP:688978, Baker Frozen 2k
Abi-simti female age 32 UPP:839688 Householder Frozen 2.5k
Daqqartum female age 28 UPP:7A7925, Stallholder. Speaks Galanglic ( Imperial) Frozen 2k
Bikku-lum female age 26 UPP:7A8967 Fishing-boat crew Frozen 2k {This woman might fetch a higher price as a concubine}
Imgua male age 17 UPP:A3B639 Seafarer 2k {Kar thinks this splendid physical specimen should be worth more}
Yahdun-lim male age 19 UPP:AB8776 Tailor Frozen 2k {Kar thinks this splendid physical specimen should be worth more}
Ali-ahhusha female age 42 UPP:6A7948 Farmer, speaks Trade-Marduk 2.5k

Fezlae is not enthusiastic about these prisoners, but offers what she considers a fair price (Kar thinks it is a low offer, he would expect 1.7/2k for most.:

Mut-kabid male age 34 UPP:886585 Wagon-Driver 1.5k
Shalanum male age 30 UPP:A89738 Stevedore Frozen 1.5k {Kar thinks this splendid physical specimen should be worth more}
Ibnatum male age 24 UPP:5AB364 Builder Frozen 1.5k
Nidnatum male age 25 UPP:A79758 Boat Builder Frozen 1.5k {Kar thinks this splendid physical specimen should be worth more}
Ku-enlila male age 35 UPP:799684 Jeweller Frozen 1.5k {Kar thinks the skilled trade and good health should increase this slave’s value}

These are not valuable to Fezlae, but she believes she can trade them on. She only offers a token amount for them, and it is plain that she does so “as a favour to friend Tiv.”

Her offer is I take them and sell them on, you clear out your hold and get cash to spend right now. Happiness everywhere!

Etirum male age 30 UPP:A89452 Farmer Frozen 1k
Ilu-asu male age 26 UPP:8977868 Farmer Frozen 1k
Udish Male age 36 287A8A Merchant speaks Trade Marduk and Galanglic ( Imperial) 1k

Eshargamelat female age 51 UPP:477A98 One of Zinat's crafts-people Held back Fezlae would value her at 1.5k
Rubati female age 21 UPP:698967 Priestess Held back
officer: Naditabirus Held back

Kar: Broker - [_2d6]=(5+6)=11
Kar assesses that Fezlae is buying with a budget for a specific client. That client seems uninterested in skilled workers, physical attractiveness, or robust health. Intelligence appears to be regarded as a negative in valuations.

Some of the prisoners might fetch more if offered to a specialist buyer, or even at open auction.

Tiv knows the Aslan are interested in warriors. The slaves with high strength and/or Endurance will likely interest them.

What the Tyrians might want is yet to be learned, but Tiv and Kar have heard they are “rebuilding their world”.

Ah Fezlae…don’t make your business decisions out of consideration for our long-standing friendship. of me. The Aesgeirr have more ships with more slaves enroute to the station now. I will introduce you to those captains and you can get a fair price on the type of slave you are brokering. Let’s fill your hood with what you, or better yet, your clients want. Leave what you don’t want to the Aslans and Tyrians. We will fill your hood with your most desirable.

Outside of that, Tiv does not engage in the negotiations. His mind, obvious to the casual observer, is occupied somewhere else…

Raven has equal disinterest in trading however with his mind on other matters it's possible that Tiv doesn't notice her approach.

Nevertheless, she speaks as bluntly as ever "Tivoli Thingvallir, I am being very diplomatic with these of your buyers that buy our goods. I need not remind you that I honour our Jarl and the broad mission he has entrusted to our crew".

Then she pauses and the mesh lined palms of her fighting gauntlets scour the rail while her voice becomes dangerously reasonable "And yet... I discover that you seek to gather ships in the Jarl's name! Tell me, Tech Commander, how such Raiding ever falls within either your sole command or remit?"

Then Raven adds quietly "Tiv, if in your... general apostate heresy... or over exposure to technology... or... maybe just pickled fish... you have somehow overstepped - then just tell me now! Believe me the Jarl ensures his will aboard his ships in many ways and so I am by far your safest option".

Tiv turns to Raven. He plasters a smile on his face even as his eyes flare in rage, though he musters the constraint needed to keep his voice low if not his tone. Raven Sorrow, it is you who oversteps…with the loosest of tongues. You speak of things which you must not in this forum.

You should hold until attending Kar’s officer bridge call, where this discussion will take place; I have asked for one immediately upon Fezlae’s departure. But, as your operational security is woefully lacking, I may have no choice but to walk away from pursuing a grand raid with you and Kar and the Serpent. A daring raid destined to bring glory to Hallstein and ourselves. A raid that greatly benefits the Aesgeirr. Must I find another less capable raid leader from another less capable ship whom I can actually trust with operational secrets? Perhaps a raid leader with a bit more seniority? What will it be?

Tiv glances around to see if any have overheard the their dispute.

Raven eyes Tiv dangerously and snarls "I speak of things that I found out myself within hours of arriving here. Seemingly common knowledge among all crews - except this one! So it is not my security that is lacking, not my secrets that blow about this place like leaves in the wind!"

She growls "I believe that you will not take this raid from the grasp of my ambition for I believe you will use the best ship and best Raid Leader available for the task at hand. You may wish to turn the clan from the Old Ways but, whether you like it or not, now is when you need them! I will see you at the meeting".

Arnwulf Goren Lugersen

Follows along with the inspection of the slave cargo. He resists the temptation to add various comments regarding 'salting and peppering the slaves to taste' or stepping upon a draping Vargr tail 'inadvertantly' as he walks behind.

He wonders if the Vargr have any Aslan slaves and vice versa. Would one go to war to free a kinsman or not? Do they enslave their own? What is worse, buying slaves or selling them. Supply and demand. What if the boat builder. Sold for ¢1.5kcr. Could he not be employed to work indentured and build boats and buy his freedom?

He wonders whether any slave rebellion ever occurred and what Oghma might do for those who escape.

Unusually he stays silent.

Raven sees Arnwulf eyeing the unfortunates for sale and simply says "You are ship's crew and have the right to claim spoils from a raid. Also your position as a bridge officer warrants a servant".

She adds "I have coin enough to lend if you have spent all your silver on that wonderful mechanical beast".

"Thank you. And I will. But my spoils will come from a raid I participate in. Onwards to further trove." he would be reluctant to claim a portion of any spoils he has not fought for.

A servant too. He tends to his own needs, not sure what he would ask a servant to do that he couldn't do himself. He will bear it in mind though should he find he needs a more personal gopher.
