Adventure Log 002: Crash on Volturnus

#1 Post by Pulpatoon »

:: Link Reference Access ::
:: Xenoendospheric Biome Shock : “New Planet Flu” ::

:: An umbrella term for a range of symptoms experienced when encountering new planetary ecology, usually resulting from the interaction of a biological entity's symbiotic microflora and -fauna to the planet’s biosphere. Galactic citizens are inculcated against the biome of major Hub worlds, and outer worlds typically provide a pharmaceutical enhancement to visitors upon arrival that eases the transition. ::

:: In the case of frontier worlds, where transition supplements are not available, it is important to maintain medical supervision, as the development of xenoendospheric biome shock is as unpredictable as a given planet’s evolutionary record. Symptoms range from mild physical distress to, in the most concerning cases, persistent parasitical infection. ::

:: Typical symptoms of non-degenerative cases include:
:: Humans : Gastrointestinal distress, mild mood dysregulation, flaky skin.
:: Yazirians : Tinnitus, light molting, patagium spotting.
:: Vrusk : Joint pain, light vertigo, chiton scaling.
:: Dralasites: Anxiety and appetite loss. ::

The light of a new day seeps through the thick atmosphere of the planet Volturnus, lighting the dunes and drawing blue shadows around the little camp. Emerging from your crowded tents, you feel the last faint traces of cool night air boil away as the sun immediately raises the temperature of the desert.

Through skill, determination, and luck, you have survived the destruction of the Serena Dawn, and landed on a habitable world. Not only that, but this world was your destination! The job you were hired to do—rescue Leela Jameson’s survey team and continue their mapping—seems like a distant concern at this point. More pressing is your own survival. You do not know where you are in relation to the other escape pods, or if the Serena Dawn’s ansible sent a distress call to civilized space before it was destroyed. There is no reason to believe that rescue is coming. You have some food and some very basic survival gear, but only a few foil packets of water. Kallina points out that, without salt pills, each person will need at least four liters of water a day to survive, double that with exertion. Everyone is at least somewhat injured. The elderly vrusk couple will require medical attention (and, crucially, medical supplies) just to stay alive. Jeeves requires repair.

As your mental checklist continues to mount, the empty desert of Volturnus offers neither succor nor distraction. Nothing moves for as far as you can see, baring the occasional pale orange plume of dust rolling over the dunes. One such dust cloud blows through the camp, and you find the dust curiously light. Wiping it from your face, you hear little popping sounds. It appears to be very small hollow structures that are carried easily by the wind. They break with the slightest pressure, leaving a minute trace of sticky sap. Bertie recalls the clouds filled with plant-forms, and hypothesizes that these little motes must be part of their life cycle, or at least part of the same phylum of airborne vegetation.

Taking turns ascending the tallest dune with the macrobinoculars, you examine the surrounding area. You mostly see a desolate waste of sand and rock, broken here and there by patches of light green—clusters of flat-leafed plants like filled lily pads.

However, about 8 km to the east, the low-angled sunlight catches something with different lines than either dune or rocky outcropping. Could it be a structure?

To the south, you see a bright line running along the horizon, fairly sparkling in the sun. It is too bright and indistinct to identify.

To the southwest are distant mountains, their brown tips wavering in the heat distortion of the atmosphere.

Coming down from the dune, you hear coughing, sneezing, and farting coming from the tents. New planet flu.

Everyone, please roll a check to resist the new planet flu! +1 for Tough.

I'm giving everyone 1 Hit back from presumed medical ministrations in the night, and as a new chapter bonus!

Bertie

Flu-roll:
Roll: [_2d6]=(2+2)=4, dis/advantage[1d6]=2

Satisfied that the organics are at least stable after a good(?) nights rest, she turns her attention to Jeeves, trying to fix up and reactivate her erstwhile companion:

Roll: [_2d6]=(5+2)=7, dis/advantage[1d6]=3
Due to skills and description, I'm going to go for advantage and +1, giving her a roll of 9, moderate success.

While Bertie manages to get Jeeves activated, she's feeling a little rough (flu reaction) after her first night on the planet and doesn't manage to fix much of him up.

Note: shouldn't Jeeves be 0 of 2 hits now? Or hopefully 1 of 2 after Berties ministrations.

Goran

Rolling to resist New Planet Flu: [_3d6]=(5+6+6)=17

Goran gets out his sensorpack and sets it up to the best of his ability, looking for all that it can tell them about the surrounding area, especially lifeforms and water.
[_3d6]=(1+1+3)=5
Since Goran doesn't have skill with the sensorpack, I believe that is a 2 that Lucky allows him to re-roll:
[_3d6]=(3+1+5)=9

Goran scowls at the sensorpack and exclaims, "Anyone know how to operate these things?"

"Oh, and I have a toolkit, though I'm not really a mechanic myself. It's right here if you need it."

Goran also will look for something that would serve as a shovel that he can carry, and will help to heal himself and the party:
[_3d6]=(2+6+1)=9

Sure enough. I'll correct that in the next post.

Who would you like as the subject of your healing roll?
Ythgar wrote: Fri Sep 09, 2022 3:03 pm Goran also will look for something that would serve as a shovel that he can carry...
Given that the nature of your toolkit hasn't been determined yet, would you like it to be something in the way of a field tool kit, with, uh, excavation-y things in it? Like a trenching tool and a collapsible pick, or something like that? The sort of things that prospectors or archeologists would cart around?

Bertie reaches for her toolkit, and feels a wave of vertigo wash over her. New planet flu! She sits down heavily in the sand, focusing on her breathing, and trying to keep from vomiting. After a moment, she gathers herself enough to take up her tools and keys open Jeeves access panels. Her vision is swimming, and she has trouble concentrating on the job. The picoware substrat shut down and stopped all membrane transport throughout the system. If she can spark that, she’ll be working alongside Jeeves’ own auto-repair systems, which will obviously make the job easier. But… how does she do that with the equipment on hand? She’ll have to somehow calibrate the charge without access to any baseline readings, and then cannibalize parts of her toolkit to generate the proper spectrum, but to calculate the appropriate refraction in her head is a nearly superhuman task, the mere thought of which sets her head spinning… Wait, it's not the calculations, it’s her stomach! With sudden, convulsive heave, Bertie pukes into the sand.

Who does Kallina heal? 1. Bertie, 2. Skur Vonn, 3. Goran: [1d3]=3

Kallina hears the sounds of Bertie violently retching and grits her teeth to keep from joining her. She finds herself scratching the back of her hands whenever she isn’t paying attention, and sees the skin is already looking raw. She was warned about Xenoendospheric Biome Shock in her training, but it amounted to little more than an admonition to take the transition supplements before your unit was deployed to a new environment. Pulling herself together, she claps a hand on the nearest figure to her—Goran, the new guy, still dressed in an apparently stolen Security uniform. It occurs to Kallina that she saw no evidence that any security personnel were part of the mutiny. Goran may have helped to mutineers by taking one of the few active security guards out. Still, he helped take out plenty of mutineers before things were through.

As she semi-deliriously follows this chain of thought, her hands work on autopilot, performing field first aid on Goran. She treats several contusions and a laser burn. Shaking her head momentarily clear, she concludes that the big man is still in rough shape, but should heal with some rest and sufficient food and water. Not that those are in any sort of abundance at present. Cursing to herself, she notices that she has exhausted the medkit she was working with. (-1 medkit)

Skur Vonn goes over to help the obviously distressed Bertie. "I can try to assist you in repairing Jeeves if you wish." Bertie, slick with sweat and looking sallow, nods her head appreciatively, and begins to explain something very complicated that sounds to Skur Vonn like he has been dropped into the last five minutes of a lecture on twelfth-dimensional combinatorics. After mumbling something about reversed dot vectors, Bertie hands him a screwdriver and goes to lie down in the shade. The poor yazirian looks blankly at the deactivated robot in front of him, entirely confused.

Giving up on the repairs until Bertie is feeling better, Skur Vonn realizes that he is the only one who does not seem to be suffering from new planet flu. He prepares everyone some rations, and distributes water. With seven mouths to feed, even this poor meal still makes a substantial dent in their supplies. The party has to find a source of water immediately, and food within a couple days.

As he contemplates this, Skur Vonn hears shouting, and sees Hilberth and Interlocutor Kdantk fighting over a water packet. “He’s drinking it all!” shrieks Interlocutor Kdantk. “We have to ration it!” Hilberth struggles to maintain a grip on the packet. “I don’t have an exoskeleton to keep my water in, you sporeless vrusk! I need more than the rest of you to keep from dehydrating!” As Skur Vonn tries to intervene, the two combatants tussle until the packet is dropped, spilling its precious contents into the dry sand, where it disappears. Hilberth begins shrieking, “I’m drying up! I’ll flake into nothingness!” while Interlocutor Kdantk screams, “Look what you did! We’ll never get that water back. You’ve killed us all!” (-7 rations)
The middle of the day is too hot to think about doing anything other than huddling in the shade of the pop tents. But as the day stretches on and the air begins to cool sightly, people begin to consider their options. Should they stick to the camp in the hopes of rescue? Should they explore the desert? If so, which direction seems most promising?

Everyone with the flu is at disadvantage on checks (or lack of advantage on what would have been advantaged checks). Each day you can roll again to shake the flu. Success = you’re fine. Moderate success = you’ll be fine the next day.

Bertie

As the day cools, Bertie grabs per link and tries to focus:

"I'm not saying we should move, or that we shouldn't, but if we did we need to orient ourselves to this planet and work out how we tell which way is north, let's see if link has any info..."

She searches her link for anything they might use to orient themselves (such as sunset location) as they move:

Roll: [_2d6]=(6+6)=12, dis/advantage[1d6]=3
No advantage, +1 from educated = 13
(finally a decent roll)

Skur Vonn stands over the squabbling civilians. "Shut up, both of you. Anymore fighting between anyone, he looks at everyone in turn, "and i'll shoot you myself. Fighting only reduces our chances. There is no sense in waiting for rescue. Our best option is to try to get to the other pods, if possible, or find some suitable natural shelter."

Skur Vonn cows the two arguing passengers, who both slink to opposite sides of the camp. There are no more arguments, although Skur Von notes Interlocutor Kdantk whispering furtively to Kallt'kan and Chrt'kltal in a vrusk language.

Bertie runs through the architecture of her link, checking for ways to hack its sense-and-emit modules for ways to learn more about the local environment, while simultaneously searching its mnemitechture for any relevant caches of information.

Bertie quickly compiles a data scraper to run through the Junior Explorigators Guild Guide and pull out the relevant information. This includes basic planetside navigation, including finding polar north on planets with and without active magnetospheres, and simple protocols for establishing the safety of water and food sources.

Goran becomes aware of an alert beeping in his backpack. His link connects to the device and announces that an external user has requested link access to his sensorpak.

Assuming Goran does not object, the sensorpak spends forty long minutes running scans of the area.

It returns a long, detailed report, most of which is not germane to your present needs. It does share to items of interest:
  • There is a slight increase in humidity to the winds coming from the east.
  • Atmospheric pressure fronts indicate another storm sometime in the next 22 hours.
Kallt'kan approaches Kallina and says, “Miz of Fury, I know we are in a dire position, and that my partner and I present only a further burden. We… we’re not in a position to make a hard trek across desert. But the longer we stay here, we are depleting resources and growing weaker without making any progress at all. Chrt'kltal and I are prepared to make our peace with life. But you young folks should pick a direction and go. I just ask if you could leave us a shelter and enough water to last us a day or two. That will give us time for certain observances that are very important to us.”

"If that is what you want, I am fine with your request. I am willing to include you in our trek if you change your mind before we leave."

Loudly to everyone, "We need to start splitting gear up so we can carry it, we need to get moving soon."

She starts inventorying gear and splitting it up, making sure Kallt'kan gets his share that he requested.

Bertie grins wanely

"I've managed to set up a local network with our devices, and that sensorpak is coming in very handy. I've also collated some frontier planet survival information which I've just sent to all the links in the net" <ping><ping> "Hopefully that might help us sort out what to do with the gear, and what little food and water we have. Now the big question is does anyone know where the rest of the pods should be? If our pod hadn't exploded we might have been able to retrieve our original destination co-ordinates."

Bertie starts to skim read the collated info on food and water, especially locating water.

Bertie establishes a local network with the party’s equipment, and shares the data she has compiled. It seems like a reasonable surmise that water is more likely to be in the direction of the slight increase in humidity to the east. But, now that she has had some more time to gather data, there might also be equivalent humidity levels coming from the occasional gusts of southern winds. So, nothing definite, there.

Using the sensorpak, she is able to establish a fairly decent set of global coordinates for the party’s position. The party crashed about 100 miles north of the equator. The escape pods’ rendezvous was somewhere along the equator, presumably in a spot considered most easily hospitabile for galactic life forms. She estimates the circumference of Volturnus to be somewhere in the range of 26,000 miles. So it may be possible to reach the equator, but a long walk to circumnavigate the globe hoping to stumble on the other pods.

Skur Vonn is aware that the vrusk language spoken between the Interlocutor Kdantk, Kallt'kan, and Chrt'kltal was not Vrk'tliktl. He knows that vrusk tend to be fluent in multiple vrusk languages and adopt them for different tasks and contexts.

Kallina accepts Kallt'kan’s offer of self-sacrifice, but Goran objects. He insists that he will stay behind with the elderly vrusk whom he befriended back on the Serena Dawn. “You lot go find food and water, and maybe even rescue. I’ll keep them safe.” Nodding in the direction Hilberth and Interlocutor Kdantk, he adds, “Play you a hand of poker to see who gets stuck with those two?”

Goran offers up his sensorpak and two of his three stun grenades to the away team.

:: Current Time: 18:00:05, Serena Dawn Ship Time, March 26 ::
:: Location : Approximately 100 miles north of the equator, unknown, the Planet Volturnus, Volturnus System, Frontier Space ::
:: For mapping purposes, shall I designate these coordinates as 100:00:00? [Y/N] ::
:: Sensorpak supplementary information: Sunfall expected in 02:36:12 hours ::

I’m considering Goran an NPC for now. If Ythgar returns, he can take control again.

How, specifically, do you divvy up the equipment? Anything you don’t claim will be left behind at the camp. I’ve given everyone two more slots of inventory on the spreadsheet. Load up!

Bertie

"I think we need to head south to the equator, it's likely the most habitual zone if that's where the pods were meant to land. I'd like to take the sensorpak and my fair share of the rest. We should spread out the various equipment we have so nobody has all of one thing. Once Jeeves is fixed he can help. I'm going to write a program to search for any signals from the ship we saw in orbit."

Roll for passive background scanning program:

Roll: [_2d6]=(5+6)=11, dis/advantage[1d6]=5

Standard roll + 1 from educated = 12 :)

Ultimately she's hoping to be able to connect to the ship and try to gain sensor data to try and determine the other pods location and/or piggyback off their comms array. This may be completely unachievable, but it's worrth a try.
