Exploring the Corridors beyond the Temple Room.

June 8th 1066

3.20pm.

I will add an update here rather than wait on Peaches as Sven is a square ahead and looking in to the room will give you a reaction or more information for Peaches to act upon.

Sven can't be sure but might swear the statues said "cheapskate!" as he passed by with his paltry offering. The crystal statues do appear interested in following your sneak up the passage, heads moving back and forth as you pass by. They move four times from left to right which should indicate they count four figures though Smokie is invisible.

But they do not raise their weapons or comment upon your actions.

Sven, you get to the first crypt and see the robed skeleton is standing before an idol, swishing his or rather her hand which holds an aspergillum, a mace like rod with a metal ball head that is perforated. Inside the head burns some fragrant ashes and he must be about some eternal devotion. The idol is goat headed and sits cross legged on the floor. After a brief moment, the figure turns to face the door, intrigued by the flickering candlelight that plays upon the passage wall. You stand transfixed for a moment, gawping in awe and fear at the figure's visage, withered features of stretched skin, rotten teeth and eyes of fiery coal. You gasp, audibly in shock and the creature steps towards the door drawn by the noise yet just inches from your face stops unblinking. It cannot see you.

Peaches, having cast a Read Magic on the parchment found you understand that it contains two new spells. These have never been discovered or taught in the Arcanum Collegiate and you are unsure if the verses scripted contain the correct jot's and iota's to complete the spells empowering. The spells may be used across all spell casting classes (mage, cleric, druid, Illusionist). One seems to be a provocation taunt, designed to inspire berserk rage in your opponent to act with reckless abandonment and without caution. The second is a personal spell aimed to give you a fearsome visage that will paralyze with fear or cause viewers to flee from your presence.

However, cautionary tales from your group comrades will add that sometimes Barrowmaze finds are not all they seem to be. any spell caster could elect to cast one from the scroll or study later to transcribe into their spell books and learn with some investment of time, material compounds and practice.

You can tell by the look on Sven's face and pointing fingers that he is surprised (but not to inaction) which alerts you and those behind that the figure is about to exit the crypt.

Orgoth, can leave the side alcove with the pool. The two skeletons sitting there do not react in any way to the trio investigating that area. You are in that cross space of the passage junction.

Already knowing what Truro will say about this thing, Sven snaps his fingers loudly as the monster is about to exit, hoping to get the others attention.

He passes his lantern to Yardie and motions for him to head back towards the others with it, hoping the monster will follow and they can trap this creature in between them so it can be fought on three different sides at once.

With he, Smokie, and Amos bringing up the rear, if this works, Sven shouts for the attack to start once the thing reaches the intersection.

Unseen, he tries to make a grab from behind for the odd aspergillum instead of attacking. Hard Dex Check (15) [4d6]=11

This thing seems extremely dangerous. I hope we possess the necessary tools to defeat it. :?

Orgoth

Orgoth readies his magic silver spear and will attack once it reaches the intersection.

Magic Silver Spear +1 [1d20+2]=2+2=4 to hit [1d6+4]=6+4=10 damage

Typical.

Peaches puts the scroll in her satchel. She'll review it in more detail when she has more time.

Seeing her comrades attack, Peaches gets in her Magic Missile pose. Haduken! she screams, causing an arcane bolt to streak towards her foe.

Exploring the Corridors beyond the Temple Room.

June 8th 1066

3.20pm.

The robed figure exits the room, inches away from Sven who is unseen to its dead eyes yet he stands in full view to others. The jewelled ring throbbing on his index finger, cold and chill. He snatches away the ceremonial mace as the creature raises it to strike at Amos who instinctively in the face of the undead, gestures a ward in front of him. Shield spell.

Yardie grabs the magic lantern hoping to draw it down the corridor towards the others but it does not take the bait and strikes out with fungal stained hands to grab at the cleric. It seems to sniff and taste the air about Amos as if his musk or scent singles him out over Sven whose presence is suddenly noted. His swipe is parried by the invoked Shield and the cleric can duck away from its unclean, leprous touch.

It is then blasted by unseen magics as an arcane missile impales its skeletal form. Peaches giving it the middle finger and shafting it with a bolt of magic. -5hp

Orgoth passes Yardie in the passageway, intent on running through the undead with his spear. As he charges by the first of the crystal statues it animates swiftly and drawing its long rock-hard and glazed blade, takes a swipe at the half-orc. The strike, a decapitating slash clangs heavily upon the warrior's head and neck! In amazing fashion, he finds that the spider silk and enchanted graphene woven into the mail links of the helmet's neck curtain somehow turn aside the head chopping thrust. saved by Helmet +1 (AC2) to your head..

The blow halts his progress, just as well for his martial prowess has yet to fully awaken. Attacked on two fronts, wasn't that your plan?, Gnimish & Bucko rush to defend Orgoth. While a crossbow bolt ricochets off the statue, a mercenary blade of Duchy iron hacks shards of splintering glass, cutting a huge chunk out of the glass guardian. -8hp.

The last trio at the rear struggle to join in due to the confines of the passage. Smokie can grab the aspergillum from Sven's hand to allow you to melee or spell cast this round.

only one Crystal Statue animated to attack.

next actions please.

Orgoth

Orgoth attacks the crystal statue.

Magic Silver Spear [1d20+2]=20+2=22 to hit [1d6+4]=1+4=5 damage

Natural 20.

Of course I roll minimum damage with a natural 20, better than nothing.

Sven watches the abomination sniffing around for his favorite cleric.

“This thing can’t see us, but it can smell our priests!”

Wondering if the strange weapon has something to do with the monsters senses, Smokie moves the aspergillum further away from it.

Still trying to figure out why his hand is so cold, he fires off more magical energy at the horrible creature.

Magic Missile [2d4+2]=5+2=7

“Holy water might be our friend here!”

I will just add this note to clarify. The undead figure can see both of you now. The ring granted an Invisibility to undead which was broken when you snatched his ceremonial mace away.

It chose to attack Amos over Sven, not because he is extra sweaty. But it must have some instinctive way, smell, magnetism, aura of alignment, to differentiate between opponents to prioritize hitting one in preference of another. The biggest difference between you being the vocational Class career you have.

East of the Temple Room.

The fight splits the party in two groups. Those in the lower parts are assailed by the animated statue which has attacked Orgoth. It continues to hack at him, slicing the air with the rough hewn but sharp blade. Once more the warrior ducks beneath the sweep and stepping inside the statues guard, delivers a stab of such force it skewers the statue, erupting showers of sharp splinters of glass and creating multiple lines of fracture through the creature's frame. -15hp.

I can move this forward with an appropriate action for Peaches. With her Magic Missile spell erased, rather than risk melee, the mage hurls a stone to try and fracture the crystal Animate a bit more.

The stone ricochets in the alcove missing wildly as do further attacks by all until a well aimed bolt from Gnimish impacts upon a weak spot -3hp and amplifying the spreading fractures until weakened, it cracks into a pile of glassy rubble.

Further up the corridor, Sven gestures his arcane crossbow spell and sends an eldritch blast to impact upon the ragged, disease ridden undead. It staggers again from the injury and Amos takes advantage, wielding his Quarterstaff in both hands, he delivers a skull-cracking whack to knock the Huecuva into Kingdom come. -2hp.

As soon as he attacks it triggers the second watching statue to draw his own glass sword and stab out at the cleric. Despite the advantage of a rear attack, Amos is just beyond reach. The statue does not react to its neighbouring construct being shattered nor the Huecuva lying dead by the coffer it stands behind. You know it has noted the presence of Sven though he was unseen by the undead and was impassive to your initial passing, Smokie and Yardie included.

Crystal Animate vs O, B, G, [1d3]=1[1d20+1]=3+1=4[1d10+2]=5+2=7Amos melee quarterstaff [1d20]=18 Staff [1d6]=2 Bucko and Yardie: [1d20]=15[2d4]=4 [1d20]=10[2d4]=7Peaches hurls slingstone: [1d20]=5[1d4]=1Gnimish & Treyvor light crossbows [1d20]=16 [1d20]=8 [2d4]=3 [2d4]=6Truro melee mace. Sven is grateful for the quick strike from Amos, but he sees their battle isn't over yet.

He shouts out to the others behind them. "A small offering might help to appease the statue!"

Having Smokie return with the strange weapon the skeleton was holding, the mage looks it over, wondering if it may help against the crystalline construct.

If the battle with the second statue isn't quickly resolved, either by force or by fortune, the mage will try magic as a last resort, attempting to lift the threat from the floor to try a peaceful parlay.

(if necessary) Casts Levitate on the statue. (save negates)

Peaches follows the advice of the charming Sven. She places a gold piece in the offering for the statue if she is able to do so.

East of the Temple Room.

Orgoth continues up the corridor, stepping over the glassy shards from the shattered statue to take on the next animate attacking the mage and cleric. His stabbing thrust is parried aside and a riposte from the statue catches him between armour and shield to slice a new scar into his much scarred torso.-4hp.

Sven invokes a spell, trying to raise the deathly sculpture to the ceiling but either it weighs beyond his prowess to lift or it resists the impulse to be swept off his feet. Pacifying offerings are made, Peaches adding coins to the coffer but that does not still the guardian to return to his previous watchful but impassive state.

While the gnomes ping crossbow bolts harmlessly wide, the mercenary duo, emboldened by their success in striking the first statue, press attacks with great success, -10hp sending more cracks and fractures around its leg and arm. The two clerics flank the statue but neither can take advantage.

Surrounded on three sides, the statue continues an unrelenting attack, seemingly not bribed by the peace offering. next actions please.

Smokie can bring the ceremonial mace the Huecuva was waving. The hollow ball head can be unscrewed, inside are some ashen grains burning a sweet, smokey perfume. The actual implement is quite rusted and ancient, looking more suitable for trinket value over a mantle-piece than a prized clerical relic.

Peaches grabs a flask of oil from her pack and lobs it at the statue. Hopefully it hits and she can light it up with her magic next round.

Throw flask of oil [1d20]=1

Or, something terrible will happen.

With his magic quickly foiled, Sven isn't sure what else he can do.

Seeing the others still having luck with brute force, he tries shooting at the statue from a distance.

East of the Temple Room

Orgoth adds another not-quite-shattering blow to the Crystal Statue, fracturing it further. -8hp A thrown ceramic flask of oil rolls across the floor, the contents slowly leak out creating a pool of paraffin behind the coffer at the back of the vacated alcove.

Bucko & Yardie prove their mettle rallying against the glassy critter but their metal is parried unlike the Gnomish crossbow bolts that each impale the animate puncturing into the swirling internal colours and completing the spreading cracks to tear the statue apart into piles of glassy rubble. -12hp.
After the brief battle, the corridors go quiet apart from heavy breathing and "wtf" exclamations from party members. Once more the group are irresistible in the face of Barrowmaze dangers, conquering all but for how much reward?

next actions please.
