Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Marcel: Negative hp Constitution check vs 12 [4d6-1]=13-1=12
The application of the 1st Aid Kit gives a minimal amount of health back to the dying cleric. +1hp. Crucially it also provides, as per House Rules a bonus to his Negative hp Constitution check. Despite his lack of medical knowledge, Isvand's intercession gives Marcel the extra boost to not breath out but keep breathing in. Temporarily. With an average stat, he will start to bleed out again in a turn but that is enough time for Gerdal to use her own wild and rustic skills to administer aid.
Gerdal, your action.
Marcel is at -6hp.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Remind me, only one First Aid Kit can be used, right? So no one else can first aid Marcel now?
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
1st Aid Kits treat a single wounded character. The Wisdom check rolled is the medic's assessment of all the patient's combined injuries.
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
As soon as Isvand starts shouting, Gerdal rushes over to the bleeding priest.
"Please, everyone, let me through. Okay, these bandages are....well, let me fix this."
She mixes a couple of herbs from her pouches and apply to the wounds, stuffing them in whenever possible. Then she starts chanting someting that sounds like a song. There's smoke from the wounds.
Cure light wounds [1d8]=6
nice.
She's sweaty and exhausted.
"He will heal now, but he needs rest."
Can someone still roll the 4d6 vs WIS to bring him to positive 1?

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Well from the brink of death, I was scripting an Obituary, the priest is stabilised at the last minute and brought to near health.
The wilderness riverbank is no suitable place for recuperating but after more meditation and devotion, Gerdal might be able to chant another healing invocation.
The three bodies of Adherer 'sticky-men' are examined. You can retract half the arrows stuck in them to be useable again. One was described as carrying a large sword across his torso, which indeed turns out to be a fine, if gooey, Duchy broadsword.
The creatures have no jewellery, trinkets or coins. One escaped into the mist. It would be easy enough with ranger Venwynn and the druid's wolf companions to give chase if you so wished.
With Marcel still critically injured, you might need to discuss options. Camp here and address his wounds in the morning, triage him on a travois and split some of the party to carry him back to Helix, other ideas.
Raust, Isvand, Gerdal, Dale, Traeliorn
discuss options and come to a decision..
I will update the Expedition over the weekend.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Gerdal examines the sword thoroughly. Perhaps just a sword from some unfortunate soldier? She casts detect magic just in case.
"We're still alive, fortunately. How about we try to find a spot to rest, and I can treat the priest once more in the morning. I think he's coming to. What do you say?"

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Raust is relieved that the book-priest is saved but discomfitted about staying here for the night. There is little choice, however. Getting Namma and Carca, the druid scouts down the nearby riverbank, trying to get clarity on their course before dusk, then returns to tell the others what is learned and how it can guide them tomorrow.
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
I will update here later. It is 3.00 am and I am tired. Will edit and post later this evening.

Riverbank scouting:
sorry for delay. I have been trying to contact the absent players.
Marcel, priest of St Ygg is stabilized but still critical. He lies a hair's breadth away from becoming comatose and drifting into eternal slumber. The party make him as comfortable as they can and by the riverbank begin to prepare an ad-hoc shelter. Traeliorn & Dale can supervise the camp, Ricardo & Pasquel cautiously hunt the riverbank for fish and edible bullrushes. Gerdal, blending into the thickets with the chameleon effect from Harkazz, you can focus on the Duchy broadsword, trying to detect any auras and enchantments.
You wonder why the creature never unglued it and used it themselves? They had grasping hands that could manipulate and hold such a weapon unless they just favour catching prey on their sticky secretions and devouring them at their own leisure.
From the casual observation of the Adherer bodies, you would expect them to be able to unstick what was stuck otherwise in this overgrown region, they would be shambling about covered in all sorts of branches and grasses.
Which should then make you think that the sword stuck to the body was a recent application. And how likely would other explorers be in this region to cross your path?
Sword wielding, newly morphed Snake-men on the other hand might be plentiful and though your detection does not spark any magic, your investigation does note the presence of small flecks of scales upon the sword hilt.
A warning then that you can share with Raust, Isvand & Venwynn who patrol a little further along the banks to understand their surrounds.
With the warning giving some advantages of knowledge and some druidical spell craft, Raust invokes her own detection skills. The trio, bulwarked by the two wolf companions, sneak perhaps another mile downstream. The Merisc Rivers form from silty waters running off the Barrow Moor and draining into many rivulets that tribute as streams into the river. The lay of the land declines towards the forest, many miles to the west.

You note the presence of many creatures, inconsequential amphibians, wading birds, slimy lamprey eels. The druid has a specific focus on serpentine creatures and you manage to detect a large constrictor lurking in the reed beds. Certainly a halfling might be a tempting treat for it though it makes no aggressive move towards you.

Maybe the group should turn home and team up with some more/new people and then return? Or if the GM wants to throw in new PCs in this location? As of now we're a little short on players. The mission itself is great, but I'd prefer some interaction/dialogue.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Gerdal sits down at camp.
"We need to rest anyway. Raust, what do you say, do we need to deal with that snake right away? I can try to scare it away with an incantation, if that's our decision."
She looks to the unconscious priest.
"I've been to the mounds a few times, and believe me, we want this priest alive and walking, if we are to stand a chance against the fould undead. So for now, we need to get him awake."

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Isvand speaks up... I definitely need a good night's rest if we are to push on, and I wouldn't mind a few strong sword arms to hide behind!
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Gerdal stands up.
"Let me see what I can do."
She starts fiddling with her herb pouches and walks over to the area of the snake, as indicated by Raust.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Raust relays their findings. "The snakemen left no trace within the next mile... we may rest, with guards, then venture further."
Raust stands back, tilting their head and observing as Gerdal hisses with the snake.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Waiting for a ruling from the GM in order to proceed action/conversation.
Hey, life comes first, always, so no problem. This is my point though, that with 5 players, 2 can afford to be "slow posters" for a while, things are still moving along with the action and dialogue. But with just 2-3 players, things come to a halt if a single one is away for a while.Marullus wrote:
Gerdal can heal, so if we just get rested we can get father priest up and going again and continue our trek.

May 29th 1066.
Riverbank scouting:
The group cut long branches from nearby trees and bind together an ad-hoc stretcher that can carry the injured priest. You move downstream, out if the territory of the predatory Sticky-men in the hope of locating the territory of the Snake-men. You trust it is not a case of jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire.
A mile or so further and Gerdal invokes a hissing tongue to communicate with the large constrictor that lurks among the bull rushes. Before it slinks away it shares the following.
"The river reachs into the Moor like a grasping hand. The fingers draining waters individually before joining as a hand. Below, at the bending of the wrist the waters tumble over rocks and fall.
The Serpents who Speak dwell therein, singing to a Mistress. They come and hunt at night, under the moon they revel."
You have a basic knowledge of the Duchy, (a map is in the Campaign Setting thread) so you can translate the snake's information to a visual location. Giving approximate judgements of distance, probably a couple of miles, no more. Your issue now is can you camp securely and undetected?
Gerdal can minister healing grace to the stricken Marcel tomorrow, Raust could learn from Gerdal's mediation and equip CLW but only when you advance to 2nd level.
As the NPC's make camp, the characters can talk via Gerdal's translation to the anaconda.
Isvand, Gerdal, Raust, you can each ask one extra question as the spell duration ticks away. The snake will answer as best it can, then I will randomise any night encounters.
Could you also give me a plan for the morning should the night camp be without incident. Unless stated otherwise, the NPC's can maintain a night watch between them to give the spell casters time to rest.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Raust asks of the snake, "What can you tell us of this Mistress?"
Sitting by the fire, Raust draws a map in the dirt with the butt of their spear, the other hand buried deep in the scruff of Namma's neck. "We must hunt them skillfully. We don't know their number in the cave. Can we lure them out? Face them in the pocket of our own trap?" The druid looks to Gerdal.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Gerdal carefully considers the druid's words as well as the information gained from the snake.
"I think what we should aim for here is to investigate first and strike later, perhaps bringing more people? I think we should try to enter their cave while the snakemen is out hunting in the night. Maybe we will find some answers there."
Gerdal asks the snake:
"Are all snake men out at night to hunt or is someone left in the cave?"
Using her common knowledge of The Duchy, she thinks we should start our search where the rivers meet and then walk with it downstream. So that looks like we should start at the southern part of hex 0406.
"Let's rest and then set off for the point where the river delta meets. I really need to prepare my herbs if I am to help the priest in the morning."

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Isvand ponders and then asked Is there a way into the lair, big enough for me and my friends, that the snake men do not know of? And if so, how can it be found?
