CHAPTER 12d: Across Motter's Realm

#1 Post by Norjax »

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 356D/81 (Evening), 257D/81 (Morning)

Max, being physically drained from contact with UKUR, tends to his self-inflicted wounds. He nods his appreciation for the thanks and assistance given from his comrades. The neuronaut ponders the half-score days it will take to fully recover from the mystic experience.

Silvestri attends to Denslow and heals him with a jolt of psychic energy. The plantient’s wounded bark begins to mend, but he remains depleted of full health. (+11 hp)

Podo and Urlando are below half their maximum vitality. They are not confident on withstanding another attack.

You cautiously proceed to forage for glow rocks around the outcrop near Podo and Kurot. After several hours of digging, enough nodules are recovered to supply Sha’oul and Jan’ort with adequate stones. Once again, they open the veil between worlds to access a sanctuary for the night’s rest.

An inquiry about the Ki-Ro-Tab Knights elicits apprehension from the crimson-clad nomads. Even with their faces covered by wrapping, it is clear they must exert effort to maintain the dimensional bubble.

“Our peoples range the entire Gam’A Zone for glow rocks. Some have ventured into the territory of the Knights,” Sha’oul offers. “They don’t take kindly to strangers, especially those warped by the Wretched Regions.”

“They would be powerful allies against Motter and her kin, but would be openly hostile towards your artificial friend here,” Jan’ort adds with a gesture towards Kurot. ”If you venture northwest for a day, the Knights will find you.”

You watch the sun set through the distortion of the warp pocket. Darkness encroaches across the land, but the pinpoints of the stars are out of focus. No activity is observed outside the bubble as the night gives way to dawn.

Silvestri

On hearing about the Knights, the Psion looks unsure: "Perhaps this trip to mother's realm was a mistake and we should return home?"

Before he sleeps he will use his healing powers:

Denslow says, How do we ensure Kurot's safety? Encountering the Knights is worthless if they will not accept all of our fruit in their branches.

Can we somehow convince them that he is on their side, or rather, they should be on our side?

He is thankful of Silvestri for the healing.

Max lies back, exhaustion setting in, not engaging in the discussion. Others might hear something of a prayer of thanks to his patron, although ending each line with a semicolon seems even odder than starting the supplication with an include and some declarations.

"Could you define 'openly hostile?'" asks Kurot apprehensively. "Does that mean they'll refuse to talk to me and won't let me in to any of the good clubs? That they would treat me as an object without a right to self-determination? Or would they just try to deactivate me on sight? The first is annoying, but tolerable. The second might be...manageable. The third presents more of a problem, however."

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 257D/81 (Morning)

Before the night’s rest, Silvestri heals a few others and then himself. His powers to heal being depleted for the day.

Saiph’s fatigue forces him to retire early. His body continues to ache from the devolution he experienced.

“The Knights won’t attack unless provoked and will assume a defensive posture when encountering mutants and smart metal beings,” Sha’oul says, addressing the concerns being voiced. “You will most-likely be taken before a gathering of their All Council and questioned.”

“We, on the other hand, will be detained for the raids of our kin and suffer a harsh punishment," Jan’ort adds. "We will not intentionally enter the Ki-Ro-Tab Realm.”

While in the nomad sanctuary, the environmental pressures of the Wretched Regions exert a change on everyone’s being.

"I suppose it's good to know that they wouldn't try to deactivate me on sight, at least," says Kurot. "Although I am not optimistic that we would be able to convince them that I am an ally against Motter."

"Can you tell us anything else about the Knights?" he asks Sha’oul. "We have taken it more or less on faith—or a hastily calculated prior probability based on limited information, which amounts to the same thing—that they could be allies against Motter. But we know little about them. Who are they, and why are you enemies?"

Urlando
The twin-headed rat thanks Silvestri for the psychic healing.

"Visiting the knights could be risky", Urlando pipes in. "It sounds like they will not greet us as nest-mates. Is there another option? I mean, where else can we go?" The rat-man is still disoriented from his capture and subsequent escape from the metal-faced beings in their tower.

Before resting for the night, he eats a few radiation-infused nuts and berries he carries from his the scarred lands near his home-burrow-- foodstuffs known for their beneficial, yet mind- and body-warping effects.

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 257D/81 (Morning)

“The Knights are the defenders of Vallon and its fortress capital of Lott Kamm, which is placed atop a great plateau,” responds Sha’oul. “Their tribe is human of the purest variety; bronze skinned, white hair and red eyes. All owe allegiance to their leader Kinn Our-Tar.

“As for the hostility between our peoples, we are guilty of our culturekin's crime. We Barnakals don’t recognize realm boundaries and roam the entirety of the Gam’A Zone. The Knights enforce their borders and claim everything within as their own. We need glow rocks to survive.”

“Their warriors ride giant beetles and wield the great shock lances,” adds Jan’ort. “They descend from survivors of the Cursed Times who hail from beyond the Radiac Sea.

“They have been known to partner with others but do not see them as equals. To them, Motter and her smart metal legions are the greatest deviation from the order of the Ancients. It was beings like her who caused the fall, destroyed the world and brought the Wretched Regions into being.

“The only way to avoid Motter’s territory and the Realm of Vallon is to journey south into the Beastlands. We’ve ventured through there and if not for our powers of Sanctuary, we would have surely perished in the belly of some titanic abominations that dwells there.”

Kurot nods slowly. "I don't know about the rest of you, but this information changes my calculations. The Knights may be the enemies of Motter, but they would not be our friends, either. Perhaps we should not attempt to enlist their aid."

"But that leaves the question of what we should do next. If we do not seek out the Knights, and Motter's tower is too much for us, then what? Return to Hagalton, mostly empty handed, and find a new venture?"

OOC: Several characters have Direction Sense and Distance Sense skills, so I judged you collectively determined the following:

Image

Bright green line is the Long Route.

Brown hexes are the Crack in the Earth.

Dark orange line is the route from Hagalton to the border of the Gam’A Zone (Light orange hexes).

Purple stars are where you were “teleported” from one to the other.

Dark green line is the travel route inside the Gam’A Zone.

Red dots are the Towers.

Brown line is a shallow cliff.

Dark orange dot is your current location.

The upper detailed map is where you first explored the Gam’A Zone and where the tunnel system is located.

Each hex is 5 miles.

I fear we are far from both town or the tunnel system of the ancient, says Denslow. I don't think we have to choose sides in the matter, but the robotic creatures are certainly hostile, while the Knights are only potentially so. Perhaps we can change their minds on those that are different than themselves. I believe it is worth the effort to try.

Max ignores the others, instead turning to Sha’oul, and saying, So where are your people from? Do the Barnakals have a city near here or are you a nomadic people? You have been very accepting to us so far: if we opt against seeing these Knights, can we perhaps explore options with you? Perhaps in exchange for gathering more of your glow rocks?

Gam’A Zone, Motter’s Realm 257D/81 (Morning)

“We are from here, yet not from here,” Sha’oul replies to Max. “If you could see into our world, we would appear as faint shadows at the edge of perception. What you call the Gam’A Zone we know as the rolling plains of Honfezgalapad. Such a visage under the reflection of a boiling sea.

When the rupture of reality happened in your world it affected coexisting worlds near your plane. We are able to crossover into this dimension but cannot bring any material substance back into our domain. We must come here for the glow pebbles and then return after we’ve transferred their sustenance.”

Max raises an eyebrow at the entity’s explanation.

So, no visiting your city then. I think…

He looks to the others: Okay, I guess it’s the Knights or we try to make our way back to civilization as we know it, which seems to be a far journey. Unless there’s another option.

I say we go to the Knights. Might not be our best friends but they could well be the lesser evil.

Urlando
One of Urlando's heads nods in agreement with Max. The other looks at the ground pensively.
"That seems to be our only choice," the first head says. The second one asks, "Did we tell Shaoul we would help find these glowing rocks? Maybe we will learn more traveling with them. Unless they're going back to their world now."
