Hollis will drop the lantern, draw his mace, and attack the Hornfoot next to Kjelti.

Melee attack on Hornfoot: [1d20+2] = 19+2 = 21, damage: [1d6+3] = 5+3 = 8

Round 3

The heroes seize the initiative and press their attack against their foes.

Kjelti’s vicious strikes leave her foe – one of the largest hornfeet – reeling and bloody. Hollis delivers the coup de grace by crushing the manbeast’s skull with his mace.

At the front line, Gaerys, Antheris, and Blue trade blows with the three hornfeet in front of them. Giantbane whistles through the air and smashes into the crude bone armor of her target, the largest of the hornfeet. The rib bones forming the breastplate of that armor are crushed and their wearer is left bleeding profusely. The ranger's new shield seems to anticipate the return below, rising in a lightning quick fashion to block it.

Blue overpowers the defenses of the savage facing him, leaving the savage mortally wounded. Antheris once again spears nothing but air.

The third savage on the wildling's front line spears desperately at the bear with a bone harpoon. It strikes true. Blue bays with pain as blood pours from his side.

[Blue - 10 damage!]

Ethan and the Hunter square off in melee. However, Ser Blacktyde makes short work of the duel, striking quickly at the giant's wounded leg. The leg is left severed in a flash of steel, blood and fire. The Hunter's eyes flash with rage, which gives way to fear as his blood - and life - flow away. His body crashes to the floor with a heavy thud.

The other hill giant, however, takes advantage of the knight's focus on the Hunter to deliver a heavy smash of its club across the back of the fighter. Ethan strikes back at him with a woosh of his flaming sword, opening a wound on its thigh.

[Ethan - 16 damage!]

The scrawny wildling manning the alarm bell wants no part of Ethan. His ratlike face scrunches up in disdain as he flees into the chamber and out of sight of the party.

Ethan sees that the ceiling in the chamber before him rises to 50’. A few smoky torches light the room. The knight’s eyes are diverted as he spots next wave of attack forming. A panel on the opposite wall of the chamber slides open. Two hill giants emerge holding heavy chains. At the end of each chain is a terrifying beast with the body of a huge lion, the face of a bearded man, bat-like wings, and a scaly tail studded with foot-long spikes. The monsters’ scream sounds at once with the rage of a madman and the power of a lion.

With a flick of their tails, the ruthless creatures whip a volley of twelve quills (6 each) across the room at Ser Blacktyde. The veteran fighter remembers his siege training, dropping to a crouch behind his shield. The quills ping off of his shield like heavy raindrops, save for one, which scrapes across his back.

[Ethan - 3 damage. The manticores had one roll higher than 7! Unbelievable!!!]

Most of the party can see another squad of hornfeet, again armed with crude stone, wood, and bone weapons (including a few long spears) assemble just south of the passage, lead by a hill giant bearing an enormous giant-sized flail and wearing crude, but effective looking plate armor. Other various clanks, grunts, and shouts of the giants’ force mobilizing can be heard – but that clamor is drowned out by a thunderous simian screech…

With the next wave of attack coming, the party must decide whether to press forward into the chamber, dig in and resist the attack, or beat a cowardly, if strategic, retreat. The heroes also realize that they are fortunate to have those options!

Thanks for NPC'ing Vorsyin, I got busy with family stuff. As for the spell he lost, I was planning on using his attack only to dodge and to save his spells for the BBG. If you want me to scratch a spell anyway, just let me know which one he was casting.

As for everyone else, what do we want to do? I have my biggest hitters, fireball and lightning available but we may need them even more later.

Hollis will move up but will otherwise take no action unless someone steps out of the way and allows him room for melee combat.

Gaerys attacks the Hornfoot in front of him.

Giantbane (vs. giant type): [1d20+3] = 15+3 = 18 Damage: [1d12+10] = 12+10 = 22

I'd suggest a fireball along the lines of the second target area described in my post in the ooc thread. That does mean Ethan would need to jump back to avoid getting scorched.

Ethan slashes at the giant in front of him, then leaps back out of the way of the fireball/onrushing horde.

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 2+4 = 6 damage [1d12+4] = 4+4 = 8

To Hit giant (ThAC0 11) [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7 damage [1d12+4] = 6+4 = 10

His slashes are not terribly effective (hit AC 5 and 4).

StumbleRoll(must gethigherthan 16): [1d100]= 51

... But at least he doesnt fall on his face as he jumps away!

Blue the Polar Bear

His fury building with the clubbing attacks from the Hornfoots, Blue attacks the hornfoot in front of him, smashing him with a massive paw and pulling him in for a deadly polar bear hug.

Blue (polar bear) paw, paw, bite (THAC0 11): [1d20] = 18, [1d20] = 6, [1d20] = 7 hits AC -7, 5, 4

Blue (polar bear) damage: [1d10] = 9, [1d10] = 3, [2d6] = 7 | hug: [3d6] = 13

Vorsyin launches the fireball (see attachment) in the hopes to eliminate as many enemies as possible. He hopes the fighters can them put a quick end to what survives the blast.

He knows he could have fired a bit closer but didnt want to risk injuring his comrades with the fireball.

Round 4

Each side seems to pause for a moment, perhaps taking a deep breath before plunging simultaneously into combat.

[Both sides act in segment 5]

Ethan and the hill giant trade vicious strikes; Ethan again slashing the giant across the thighs, while the giant slamming his club into the knight’s shoulder. Ethan then crouches to spring backwards away from the fray. Just then, another volley of twelve manticore spikes rain ruthlessly all down on the bannerman. The insane beasts’ aim is much more precise this time – seven quills slam into the knight, puncturing flesh and organs! Despite his severe wounds, the momentum of the jump takes the pincushion over the party's front line and next to Hollis. As the bruised, bloody Lord lands, the party cannot help but be inspired by their leader's conviction.

[Ethan: 9 damage from giant; 34 damage from manticores!]

Gaerys and Blue stand on the front line, also trading blows with their opponents. Garerys's armor absorbs the brunt of the club-smash dealt out by the hornfoot facing him as the ranger calves the hornfoot’s head in twain! Blue tears his opponent to shreds, taking a jab in the gut in the process. Kjelti moves forward to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with her companions. In so doing, she brushes aside Hollis, shouting “You have better things to do than eat metal, priest!”

[KJ NPC'd this round.]

[Blue: 5 damage]

The armored giant – the Juggernaut – charges over and past the corpses strewn across the dungeon hallway right at Blue. Kjelti, having held her attack to wait for an opponent to close, lands a vicious blow across the giant’s thighs just as he attacks. In turn, the Juggernaut raises his huge – even by giant standards – club above his head and swings down mightily. The club crashes down heavily upon the dungeon floor like a sledgehammer. Flakes of stone fly everywhere.

[*Rolled a 3! Lucky, Lucky, Lucky!]

The second wave of hornfeet follows the Juggernaut’s charge. A rank of two savages fill in the front line, one striking at Kjelti with a bastard sword (likely the product of a raid), the other striking at Gaerys with a stone axe. The ranger parries the blow quite easily. But the bastard sword connects, leaving a small cut on the arm of the warrior woman.

[Kjelti: 1 damage.]

The next rank of Hornfeet strike at the party from the second rank with bone-tipped spears, striking at Blue, Gaerys, and Kjelti respectively. Blue’s white fur is once again stained red as the harpoon digs into the meaty flesh of his shoulder. However, Gaerys’s new shield once again proves a valuable addition, as he deflects away the vicious thrust. Kjelti also uses her shield to typical great effect.

[Blue: 2 damage]

Vorysin calls out the now familiar incantations as he circles his hands intently around a small piece of bat guano. A brilliant, pea-size sphere comes into being and shoots forward out of the mage’s hands.

[Fireball go off in segment 1 of R 5. Much smarter plan going for the gang, BTW, than trying to take out the larger foes. ]

Ethan Blacktyde (2/71)

Barely standing, Ethan submits to the priest's magic, and calls for one of the healing potions, otherwise staying out of the fight, for now.
Ouch! Wasn't expecting something quite that brutal :)

Antheris (41/41) and Blue (21/48 - fights until -14, it's a polar bear thing)

Blue roars and attacks the nearest foe.
Blue (polar bear) paw, paw, bite (THAC0 11): [1d20] = 7, [1d20] = 17, [1d20] = 2 hits AC 4, -6, 9

Blue (polar bear) damage: [1d10] = 8, [1d10] = 7, [2d6] = 7 | hug: [3d6] = 10

Seeing that the mage is casting fireball (he has heard those intonations before!) and the advance of the enemies down the hall, Antheris shapechanges into a giant wolverine and if he can manage a musk attack (60 foot cone) clear of his companions, he will unleash the blinding musk on the enemies that have advanced into the hallway.
(ooc: hopefully the shapechange could have started when Antheris first heard Vorsyin's incantation last round - Antheris held his action last round but I didn't update between Vorsyin's post and the round resolution. I understand if it's too late for that though.)
If he cannot manage the musk attack, or if he can use it and also the Giant Wolverine's normal attack routine, he will lay into the nearest foe threatening Blue.

Antheris, wolverine, THAC0 16, claw, claw, bite: [1d20+4] = 12+4 = 16, [1d20+4] = 15+4 = 19, [1d20+4] = 3+4 = 7 hits AC 0, -3, 9

Antheris, wolverine, damage, claw, claw, bite: [1d6] = 6, [1d6] = 5, [2d4] = 7
ooc: Does Antheris also gain the AC 4 of the Giant Wolverine, rather than his own AC of 6?

Round 5

The dungeon shakes with concussive force as Vorsyin’s fireball goes off. The mage’s caution for his fellows could have saved Ethan’s life given a different turn of events, so it was wise. But it permitted the foes who had moved to engage the party to avoid the blast.

[36 damage rolled! I won’t allow redirecting this time, but would reconsider in the future if given good reason.]

Ten hornfeet are caught in the inferno. Nine are absolutely incinerated. Another manages to somehow survive the explosion, albeit barely. Covered in horrific burns, the savage turns and tries to flee via the southern exit of the chamber, screaming as he runs. A manticore pounces on him, as a cat might catch a mouse, and feasts on the cooked meat.

Two hill giants are also caught in the blast. One is thrown backwards and slams against the rear wall of the chamber. The giant’s enormous body does not so much as quiver as it continues to burn. The other giant manages to duck away somewhat, but still suffers horrific burns across its body.

The party hears two more bizarre and horrifying screams of simian origin. One continues after the blast, one does not.

The chamber oddly quiets in the wake of the blast. The quiet is punctured with the resonance of human voices: “Help us…HELP US!!!” The voices seem to come from just south of the chamber.

Perhaps inspired by the cries, the party takes the initiative.

Gaerys and Kjelti strike at the juggernaut. Giantbane fails to pierce the heavy armor of the giant. Kjelti fares better – she thrusts her claymore through a chink in the juggernaut’s armor and deep into the hipjoint. Blue falls upon the threatening giant as well, tearing open its face with a claw.

Antheris completes his transformation into a giant wolverine. The ferocious beast takes a step forward, crouches and sprays the remaining hornfeet, juggernaut, and other remaining giant with blinding musk. The party’s enemies choke, wheeze and cover. Most hornfeet are left blinded and panicked. The two giants engaged with the party remain able to see, but are weakened and slowed. The confined hallway reeks with animal stench.

Hollis kindly lays his hands upon the wounded Ser Blacktyde. Several spikes fall to the floor as they are expelled from the knight’s body. Ethan is thrown an extra-healing potion by Vorsyin. The knight consumes it rapidly.

[Ethan +25 HP]

Vorsyin patiently awaits the effects of his fireball. Seeing the wanton destruction that it reaped upon his foes, the mage has time to begin another spell. However, any attempt to do so is stymied by a hit from a boulder lobbed in from a giant, released just before the musk took affect.

[V: 9 damage]

In the meantime, the juggernaut, weakened, but not blinded, drops his club and attempts to pound on Antheris with his fists. Even in its current state, the juggernaut is a fearsome opponent. The iron gauntleted fists crush Antheris, breaking a rib.

[Antheris: 9 damage.]

The blinded and weakened hornfeet on the front line and second rank strike back at the heroes. Their attacks prove feeble as not one connects.

The back two rows of hornfeet, disoriented and weakened, abandon the attack. Some of the blinded savages wander right into the claws of the cruel, ravenous manticores and are devoured instantly. Others disappear to the south east. The burned giant, who once saw to the manticores, also flees, but northward.

The party, having shown their true quality, have turned tide of battle … whether and how they press their advantage remains to be seen.

Gaerys attacks the armored giant again, hoping to finish him off.

Giantbane (vs. true giant): [1d20+3] = 1+3 = 4 Damage: [1d12x2] = 1x2 = 2+10

Keep on hoping...

ETA: That was an impressively bad combination of rolls. Glass half full: if you're going to roll a 1 for damage, there's no better time than when you rolled 1 to-hit.

Ethan Blacktyde

Feeling somewhat better, but still in the back row, Ethan holds his action, looking to back up anyone else who is struggling
I don't remember anything like an "aid another" action in 1e/Osric, but Ethan can't really get in at the moment. Is his sword our primary light source at the moment? Can he shoot over blue's head?

Also, something about his HP numbers isn't adding up. Was the +25 inclusive of the cure serious? Then he should be at -44, otherwise, at -33, I think.
