With a sudden look of startlement, Tibbius strolls to the library door, and knocks firmly. Putting his mouth near the edge of the door, he shrilly yells, "Hey! Vorkath! Did you really just cast Protection from Evil on yourself, then retreat to the LIBRARY? What kind of books are you reading? ... More to the point, could we get a little of that Protection on us out here? Particularly, on the fellow holding the stake?"

Vorkath / library

The hour is still early, so upon hearing Tibbius making a racket outside Vorkath unspikes and opens the door. He looks down on the elf carrying a broom.

"My little green friend, I have not retreated anywhere. And surely after all the adventuring we've done together you realize my divine aura against evil is not a spell to be cast about?"

"Your broomstake is a good idea,"
the paladin says smiling. "You can clean the library floor while we wait."

"Tibby, I have been impressed in the past with your sorcerous illusions and wondrous wand. Surely those will aid in battle."

The paladin looks down the hall toward the foyer. "Is our dour rogue still grumbling about arrangements? The dwarf bitches more than a fairy princess. We discussed strategy: Fortify, protect the girl, defend based on ability. If I join you out there, the girl is alone in the room. I'm in here because of who I am, not by personal choice. A vampyr has many means of getting in there. That said, if combat demands me outside the room, I will join you."

"ha ha ha",loud guffaws echo down the corridor at the surprising jest from the paladin. Agrippo will stroke his thick black beard, mumble something about horsemeat for breakfast and recount exaggerated tales of penal legion stands against the odds. Agrippo has a fine decorative scarab medallion embedded within his waist belt, a promotional gift for 'services rendered'. Occassionally he will spit and polish it wonderering if tonight he will need to invoke any of its benevolent powers.

Not one for small talk, Agrippo will take a guard tour of the west wing of the mansion. shield on his back, spear in one hand and large candle for light in the other.

You settle into your evening defensive routine. Vorkath and Iluq settle into the library with Ireena. Tumbler and Robert patrol the house. Tibbius remains in the foyer near his glowing sand with his homemade stake. Agrippo guards the west wing.

Night falls.

For hours, you watch, wait, and listen. As the night wears on with no attack, you find it more difficult to maintain your vigil. But the adrenaline from your awareness of the threat that faces you helps keep you awake and alert.

As midnight nears, you gird yourselves for an attack. Surely that is when a vampire would choose to attack! But all remains quiet outside the house.

An hour later, as minds weary from hours of watching and waiting think fondly of sleep, you hear the horses whinny in fear. The horses' cries soon mix with the howls of wolves—how many, you cannot tell. The howls are quickly against the house, mixed with the sounds of desperate scratching at the boards covering the windows. You hear loud *thumps* against the windows. Then more scratching, followed by more *thumps*. The bray of a mule disappears into the distance.

Then you hear an even worse sound: a crash, from the direction of the drawing room, followed by fluttering sounds and the squeals of dozens of rats.

PMs forthcoming. Please keep actions in PMs for now, since not everyone in the house can see what's going on in other parts of the house.
Positions at the moment of the crashing sound:

Vorkath and Iluq remain in the library—Iluq chanting, Vorkath guarding the library and trying to detect evil from the direction of the sounds. They hear from the drawing room the unmistakeable sounds of combat mixed with howls, snarls, yelps, and dozens upon dozens of high-pitched squeaks. Tumbler's voice cries out: "Bloody hell! Wolves in the drawing room!”

3. Battle in the Drawing Room

#147 Post by Zhym »

Time: 1:01 AM - Combat Round 1
Weather: Overcast

You take the initiative.

Tibbius reduces the first wolf through the window to a fraction of its size. What was a mighty beast the size of a pony shrinks until it resembles a brown border collie. A mean, attacking border collie.

Tumbler shouts “Bloody hell! Wolves in the drawing room!” He attacks the little wolf, missing badly and giving the wolf a chance for a counterattack. The wolf’s bite misses Tumbler.

Agrippo charges into the room and slices the reduced wolf clean in two.

Six more wolves jump through the broken window. Scores of bats stream through, obscuring your vision and interfering with your movements. Any attempts to cast spells with material components now require a d20 check vs. dexterity.

Three of the wolves have the opportunity to attack. Agrippo and Tumbler are bitten!

[Agrippo: -5. Tumbler: -7]

Robert and Ismark join the fray, although they are not currently able to get to the front ranks.

You hear no evidence that Vorkath or Iluq intend to leave the library.

Tibbius attempts to cast audible glamour: sound of a growing fire!

However, if a wolf attacks, he will counter strike with the glowy end of his staff.

Agrippo will growl at the wolf who sank his fangs into his leg (AC0...wolf must be quicker than I thought!!...or maybe its' age setting in! :( Agrippos' fear working quicker than his arm). Agrippo will attack the wolf back, standing his ground in the walled gap.

1st Attack: [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14 [1d6+3] = 4+3 = 7 damage.

2nd attack: [1d20+2] = 5+2 = 7 (good enough to hit AC 7), [1d6+3] = 2+3 = 5 damage.

The wolves strike first.

The three wolves in the front are able to attack. Two go after Robert. The druid dodges the first wolf’s lunge, but the dodge puts him right in the path of the second. The third wolf bites Tumbler.

[Robert: -6 HP; Tumbler -5 HP]

The wolves behind the front rank howl and leap, trying desperately to join the battle. Bats continue to fly around the house.

You counterattack.

Robert attacks the wolf that bit him, but his swing goes wide. Agrippo strikes twice with his long spear, piercing the hide of one of the huge wolves once. The wolf yelps, but remains on its feet and fighting. Tumbler swings his hammer at a wolf’s head but misses badly.

Tibbius tries to cast a spell to create the sound of a growing fire somewhere in the house. The bats interfere with his casting motions, but he is able to complete the spell. You hear a crackling sound from the east wing.

Ismark shouts at Tibbius, "What's a mage doing in the front ranks of battle? Get out of there and let me in!"

Tibbius, unsure (as usual) how or why he had so impetuously advanced, swiftly steps back to the foyer doorway as he implements steps 2 and 3 of his revised revised plan. (2) Audible Glamor: already cast sound of a bonfire going out of control, then let it go to run on its own for the next 12 rounds; (3) Phantasmal Force: image of golden flames catching in the glowing sand on the foyer floor, then a flamefront exploding through the foyer doorway into the drawing room, and sweeping around drawing room walls, past the front rank, to singe the bats and wolves. The side walls of drawing room, as well as weapons of Tumbler, Agrippo, and Robert, then continuing to glow and flicker with scattered golden fires, occasionally catching in the fur of a wolf or bat, as long as Tibbius can concentrate. [1d20] = 10 DEX check for M component

Basically, the front rank came to you. Tibbius was the only one in the drawing room when the wolves broke through the window.

Just in case that was meant as an actual question. ;)

Robert, shocked at the attack from the wolf, strikes again, attempting to take down the beast!

[1d20] = 2+1
Wow...almost a perfect fumble

Agrippo will attack again, aiming to spear the same wolf. At the same time he will say to other none-fighters to retreat to the hallway and spell cast from there. "can one of you web those bats up, stop those flaming things flapping around!"

Agrippo attempts to kill the wolf.
[1d20+2] = 13+2 = 15
[1d8+3] = 3+3 = 6

(Agrippo attacks 3/2 rounds so only one attack this round but 1d8 vs large)

Update coming later tonight, probably. I need to coordinate your actions this round with what the librarians are doing.

Plus, there's that pain in the arse illusion to deal with. ;)

reserving the Web, in case there's something really scary. First let's find out whether wolves are frightened by smokeless flames.
