Avastan Downport: The API Counterattack or Hell's Coming to Breakfast

Jess Round 1

Jess orders Dash to tuck her IFV behind the starport building that blocks LOS to the front and uses her drone feed to monitor events. Sugar muses “That's a lot of infantry” then focuses over her gunsight. At the grav sleds' approach Dash backs away a little to give the PD's TAR more “room” and Sugar reports “The Gunship's splashed the APC to our six". Then “Shit, what did they use!" She absently continues her nervy commentary "Looks like 4DC's ortillery hitting the infantry on the north of the Drachenfels berm. OK, here they come”.

Jess commands the other two IFVs to perform “pop up” shots from within the berms concentrating on enemy AFVs to protect the SEMC infantry.

The IFV (Blue A) in the Deliverance berm pops up and, for lack of AFV targets since Gaughan's ambush, fires point blank into the advancing mass of API infantry. It immolates one infantry team who die instantly and the “splash” incinerates the team nearby who die horribly. The entire infantry platoon to their front are clearly all flinching or ducking for cover after this display and fail to acquire the IFV that just hosed an entire section of their mates. There is therefore no return AT fire.

Meanwhile in the Vipers' Nest berm the IFV stationed there (Blue B) likewise pops up and literally lights up an APC (from Unit B). The plasma bolts slash clean through the APC's relatively light bow armour and over penetrate through the rear torching everything within. The APC stops and burns.

The API APCs focus their fire on the SEMC infantry but the API infantry respond to the threat to their front firing their squad AT weapons. Three RPGs (LAW) streak towards IFV B. One goes high over the turret, another explodes in the sloped earth glacis of the berm but the last slams into the IFV's gun mantlet and detonates lancing its molten metal penetrator into the interior of the merc grav vehicle. The IFV, trailing smoke, drops back into the berm. The commander reports “Dammit I'm hit and the gun's U/S. I'm pulling back!”

As to her own tactical options Jess elects to perform a pop up (thereby retaining 50% plus cover from the building) and fire at her gunner's discretion. She indicates the target on the IFV's fire control and gives Dash the word. He raises the IFV in the vertical plane only and exposes just the turret over the building's roof. Sugar immediately calls “Target, Tank, Front, On” and then immediately “'ave it!” as the fighting compartment resounds with the thrumming discharge of rapid pulsed plasma. The first bolts carve clean through the grav sled's chassis and the consecutive hits turn the remnants into falling flaming pieces. What hits the ground is barely identifiable as a vehicle.

The grav sled's “buddy” turns into Jess' IFV after the pop up and fires a missile from it's onboard rack. It streaks towards the exposed turret of the IFV and gets close enough for Sugar to exclaim “Fekk..!” before the PD system hums and another fifteenth of the gauss needles in the onboard hopper disappear. The inbound missile turns into inbound chaff.

The second grav sled still remains active.

Avastan Downport: The API Counterattack or Hell's Coming to Breakfast

Frank Round 1

Frank monitors the Battle Computer's holo display as the conflict unfolds. He now notes six inbound 4DC infantry elements dropping from orbit and another inbound small craft. The promised air support is coming in very fast but the doughty API infantry press forward.
Avastan Light Infantry.jpg
Avastan Light Infantry.jpg (39.39 KiB) Viewed 560 times
On the clear communal SEMC/4DC "Guard" channel he hears "Strike Leader from One. Two just melted the TAR on the SPAA and the unit head shed now has no head. Hawkeye has API search radar jammed. Door's open, come on in. Be advised fifty mikes danger close to SEMC".

Hawkeye comms Frank “SEMC Six, inbound in 30 seconds. Get your people back and heads down. This is gonna be a big one”.*

(OOC: * Points for quote spotting throughout this phase of play! ;)

OK Frank got less words but he did get a picture and a kinda prologue...

The Kit/Jakob combofest to follow then I'm spent! :P )

Avastan Downport: The API Counterattack or Hell's Coming to Breakfast

Jakob and Kit Round 1 The Frontline (West)

The mass of API infantry move forward managing to maintain cohesion and move at least partially tactically. As they approach the mercs rely on their cover and concealment holding their fire until the enemy get closer and mitigating the risk of a spot by the overwatching armour or counterfire from the known artillery threat.

Jakob, Kit and those on the now shared tactical link hear Beau marshalling the defenders of the Viper's Nest berm:
“Gentlemen and Lady, stand firm” “Kingy, pack it in!” “we fight in a righteous cause” “It's the polyester again - ridin' up somefin' criminal it is, Corp. Ruddy twin pack! I'm goin' commando again” “Get your kit on you ruddy fruit” “and we shall prevail.” “Right you're up in front of Ms East fekkin' Section 8” “Make sure of your targets” “Phwoar, she's ruddy lovely...” “and look to your battle buddy” “Bollocks to that. Company punishment – QSM in the morning!” “You can't do that - chafin' is a ruddy medical issue...” “Will there be any words from the cavalry, Corporal?” Charlie audibly pauses to spark what must inevitably be a crumpled Woodbine and adds “Yer, wot 'e said" and then clearly feeling he should add more states "Cavalry troop. Wankers, stand to!"

In the Deliverance berm there is much less comm chatter under the close command of the Marine officers. They watch as the API soldiers, now marshalled to within a few hundred metres and clear LOS on their objective, pause to further prep their attack.

A counter current in the wind stops the snow flurries in their tracks and for a moment all remains perfectly still.

Then the distant assault guns crawl to a halt under the aim of Gaughan's rangers and then erupt into flaming destruction. The API infantry seem unmoved. As one they rise up and with fixed bayonets surge toward the berms.

“Urrah!!!” the warcry sounds as a low ululating growl as they close in.

Neither Jakob nor Kit can quite remember who gave the word but it was given at exactly the right time and all who were there can remember the effect. At a few hundred metres SEMC unleash hell. Plasma lances from both berms to slay any it contacts and also unfortunates nearby. The PGMP strikes leave perfectly scorched circles of death in the snow dusted ground occasionally marred by the staggering and partially melted paths of those not fortunate enough to immediately be killed outright. The merc SAWs hose DS ammo into the advancing line while individual troopers take down their targets with bursts from their ACRs. Kit constantly corrects the SEMC mortar fire to keep it consistently targeting the advancing enemy. He notes that even minor frag wounds seem enough to drop some enemy soldiers out of combat. Meanwhile on the “Ma Deuce” Caxton puts folk face down.

The enemy return fire but the berm and elevation combine to shield the SEMC from major casualties. Whiskey takes a round to his helmeted head and falls back from his SAW unwounded but moving and clearly concussed. Encouraged by this minor success the Avastan infantry surge forward but that's when Jakob opens up with the auto grenade launcher. Walking his fire along their front he downs most of an entire section and puts the rest to flight. He then transitions to the section behind. Now assailed by Gaughan's Rangers firing into their right rear (two SAWs and a rifle group) the API infantry check then break and then run. Very few, if any, escape the crossfire.

Over in the Viper's Nest berm the SEMC fire teams have their organic support weapons but no heavy weapons. Their initial tasking to interdict the enemy grav sleds is thwarted by the enemy flying into position over their own friendly trenches on the north face of the Drachenfels berm [map ref D6/7]. As the enemy advances the mercs put casualties on the advancing infantry but not enough to stop them before both the PGMP and SAW are suppressed by autocannon fire from the supporting APCs. To compensate for this Kit focusses the SEMC mortar fire on this sector (Unit 2). As he corrects his fire he notes that the nearest/westernmost elements of the attack are also suffering command and control issues as anyone visibly issuing an order or attempting to rally the assaulting troops drops to sniper fire [Prerna's unit are now short of targets as the Battlion HQ fled]. Those enemy that survive to attempt the slopes of the berm now take fire from their rear from Gaughan's men (ex AT ambush) firing from the top floor of “his” starport building. The attack breaks up before it can be delivered and the (very few) remnants of Unit 2 are forced to retreat into the cover of the nearby brush [Green blobs between Units 1 and 2 on map].

From the Northeast of Viper's Nest berm Unit 3 advances and their commander shrewdly angles Southeast towards the road to ensure his troops are unmolested by mortar fire. As he manoeuvres six objects drop from orbit and an orbital missile strike slams into the API positions on the front of the Drachenfels berm. He splits his force and sends one section into the Drachenfels berm and two towards the SEMC positions in the Viper's nest berm.

This just about when everyone gets hit by the downdraught of something doing three thousand kph. At about the same time the suspected artillery park immediately west of the shipyard is struck by a flash of light followed by plumes of smoke and a “firework display” of “secondaries”. The supporting APCs are now gone. One must be the charred mess centred in the plasma footprint with its comrade being the barely recognisable wreck burning out beneath the plume of black smoke. Twin black plumes rise from beyond the starport admin block [Unit C].

Jakob had a snapshot glance at a wedge shaped thing that reminded him of ground cars specifically built only for straight line speed but he'd never imagined one could fly or be built around a tank's main armament. He's pretty sure it was ochre green all over and had nose art that said “Canned Heat”.

Kit's whiplash went the other way but as the dagger shaped craft crossed over east to west he's quite sure his sighting was of nose art that read “It Ain't Me” and that looking down into the cockpit from his position atop the berm that the pilot was blond...

(OOC:
Jakob with Auto GL +1 Dex +1 Skill +4 Auto 2d6 + 6: (4 + 4) + 6 = 14 That's four contact hits with HE each of which (on folk under voice command) generates frag hits - all of which make for universal ouchies!

Avastan Downport: The API Counterattack or Hell's Coming to Breakfast

Jakob and Kit Round 1 The Frontline (East)

Although the API attacks from Units 1 and 2 are soon to founder Unit 3 has more success. Unmolested by mortar fire the unit retains cohesion during their approach. Well controlled by their officer the two sections assaulting the Northeast face of the Viper's Nest berm deliver effective suppressing fire and make good progress up the slope. The defensive SEMC fire of the seven available shooters is necessarily split between the two assaulting units (of about 40 each) and slackens significantly after their positions on the berm are raked by autocannon fire from the supporting APCs in overwatch (Unit B). Insult is added to injury as the now unsuppressed and still active API infantry in the trenches on the north face of the berm re-emerge from their positions to join the counter attack (effectively replacing the API losses inbound).

Rifleman George's adrenalised voice comes over the comm through the fog of war “Oi, we need some fekkin' 'elp 'ere - there's ruddy fhaasands of 'em! Beau's down and Love's shot up bad”. He despairingly adds “Send some ruddy 'elp - an ' a quack! I'm tryin' to get 'em both dahn the apples”. *

Meanwhile things sound only a little more controlled (if not any better) from the Cavalry troop as Charlie transmits over the command channel “HQ we are about to be overrun. Displacing in bounds”.

However on the Cav Troop Tac channel it appears that Charlie retains both command and control “Mike displace - enfilade 'em as they get to the top. 'Arry, wiv Mike – move! Kingy, me and you, 'ere. Get yer spike on!” He switches back to the command channel “Mortar section, we are overrun. Cease fire and displace. Grab up Beau's people off the stairs - an' get 'em to a fekkin' medic”.

However, a little further East the line at least now appears to be “Shored up” [rather too pleased with that! :D ] A familiar voice sounds over the shared 4DC/SEMC Tactical channel. Skip Dallas calls “'Ooorah! C'mon Tac Three! Do you motherlovers want to live forever?” Armoured figures leap up from within to land atop the Drachenfels' berm and a pair begin to thin out the rear of Unit 3 while two more go prone to pick off the ground vehicles of Unit E with what must be high tech laser rifles. Skip destroys an RPG team with his FGMP and standing exposed on the berm top calls “Pour it on Tac Three!”

Meanwhile, another armoured 4DC warrior leaps down into the API trenches and clears one solo with laser fire before bounding out to confront the advancing section from Unit 3. Their RPG man fires a rocket at the armoured threat but it suddenly skews wildly off course. The 4DC trooper's response is to rip her helmet free from her bright blond hair and scream in feral rage. She grabs a hatchet and hurls it unrotating some 50 metres to strike the RPG man in the face. She then roars unfettered primal hatred and, drawing her battle axe, leaps in amongst the API infantry section who are now seemingly at war with their own weapons.

A howl goes up from the neighbouring (now Vargr owned) Abyss berm and a recklessly piloted grav platform moves to join this lateral thrust. Some young Vargr spontaneously join the operation grabbing onto the trailing “boarding ropes” dangling below the grav platform.

Avastan Downport: The API Counterattack or Hell's Coming to Breakfast

Frank Round 1 The Frontline (Strategic Overview)

Frank hears Charlie's comm call and a stonefaced Voss checks his own weapons and adds calmly “Sir, the Viper's Nest berm. Now's the time for the Reserve – or to be more blunt, sir, just anything we have left”.

Dubs reports “Sir, 4DC are down in the Drachenfels berm and engaging!" He then adds with a wince "And the Vargr comms are going wild with more nonsense - the same repeated phrases “Eis, Thursuthkvaehh – Deathwalker”.

On the SEMC/4DC higher command link Frank hears Colonel Skeet croon to himself “Stand and deliver - your money or your wife!” He then broadcasts “Drachenfels, yeah you asshole! Oh, you clocked the cannon? Imperial Marines - open your hatches!” followed by an aside of “For fek's sake you gotta love Imperial propaganda and the power of holo vids - that sh1t really shouldn't fly!”

Monitoring Florence's drone coverage Frank sees that the API counterattack on the Abyss (now Vargr) berm has entirely stalled. Supporting fire from the Aeogz class corsair cuts down API infantry with autocannon and immolates their supporting light vehicles with its starboard laser battery. API leaders and support weapon crews are ruthlessly picked off by the gauss rifles, lasers and heavy calibre sniper fire of the elite Fuernuzorg while the corsair crew enthusiastically pour a torrent of (mostly) accurate automatic fire at the bulk of the infantry from a truly eclectic, yet universally lethal, mix of weapon systems.

Frank nods at Voss

"Reserve it is."

He grabs his rifle and helmet and turns to Dubbs and Liv.

"We need the two of you stay here as overwatch"

I don't believe we have any spare vehicles to speed up arrival. How about grav-belts.

Good point. Perhaps also time to use its guns and bombs to help against unit 3 when we arrive.

Can I use one of my points to notice this sooner and send in the reserve with less delay to minimise casualties?

Yes, but with the caveat that you can't change the events that have occurred but can make preparations for foreseeable outcomes.
[In an attempt to minimise casualties you may just have put them/more somewhere else as you would present the launch as a target to all the API assets on the battlefield which you likely wanted to avoid until after the air strike].

In fairness casualties were reduced by your local commanders' default tactics (Cover and Concealment).

Debrief notes/Points for Philosophy: Fire ended up focussed on Beau's team due to Charlie's squad not getting spotted by the enemy due to their default use of the advantage of Concealment (see failed API spotting roll in the "workings"). Also casualties were indeed minimised by Beau's squad's default use of the advantage of Cover which absorbed two ACR hits and two more of the (very dangerous) autocannon hits (their Pen cancels out your AV - not good!) Beau was always going to get spotted (PGMP is auto spotted) but then he has to fire on the enemy (Catch 22).

It might not seem so but you got off lightly! ;)

Therefore, as a contingency Frank and Voss have their grav belts already equipped (just in case they needed to quickly get about the battlefield). They use them to quit the trader and RV with Freya's nearby launch (taking the battle computer with them) - the HQ is now an aerial asset! Liv also piles aboard to work your end of the commlink to the Trader (which retains your unit Comms and Techs).

So, having swiftly executed the contingency plan Frank, Voss and Liv are now aboard the Gunship/Launch. While grav belts are fast the Launch is even faster so you have negligible "travel time" across the map using either mode of transport.

Please check my understanding.
  • Gaughan made short work of the vehicles near him.
  • The remains of API units 1 and 2 are in the green bushes between the north faces of berms D4 and D5.
  • API unit 3 is gaining on the D5 berm, and are close to or on the top.
  • There is at least one 4DC trooper in the middle of the API unit 3 melee.
  • The grav vehicle Jakob had as a reserve for Gaughan is available.

If these are correct, then here's Jakob's action(s).

Jakob broadcast over the general comm while doing his best to unload all of his AutoGL ammo on the API units 1 and 2 in the brush. "Grav carrier, to me, right now. We are going to take back the berm to our east. SEMC injured, stay here and hold, otherwise get ready to ride into melee, we have a 4DC sister making us look unmanly."

His tone softened. "Good work, George; I did not anticipate their reaction. You did well, now get out of the way while we finish the job."

"Gaughan, your call on whether you can support the melee and still hold your AO."

Here's the map for reference:

Yes, you are right but quibbles and pedantry (possibly even amounting to clarification) as below:

Gaughan made short work of the vehicles near him.

Yes a volley of eight LAW "overkilled" the tank destroyers/assault guns.

The remains of API units 1 and 2 are in the green bushes between the north faces of berms D4 and D5.

API Unit 1 broke and fled back through the Gaughan/Kit crossfire they are all KIA/wounded.

API Unit 2 broke under Jakob's fire and took refuge in the nearest cover - the scrubby bush. Any surviving the SEMC "speculative fire" within are very likely no longer mission capable.

API unit 3 is gaining on the D5 berm, and are close to or on the top.

API Unit 3 advanced South - more or less along the road between the berms. They then sent two sections West to the Viper's Nest berm (notionally one vs Beau and one vs Charlie) and, in a possibly unwise move, split off the platoon's third section East to assault 4DC in the Drachenfels berm. (Section here is ~ 10 men (two fire teams) as per British phrasing). The Unit 3 Platoon HQ (~6 men) also went West.

There is at least one 4DC trooper in the middle of the API unit 3 melee.

It is this Eastbound third section of Unit 3 that has collected the "solo artiste" from 4DC - the melee occurring halfway up the Western slope of the Drachenfels/4DC berm.

The grav vehicle Jakob had as a reserve for Gaughan is available.

The SEMC IFV "A" is available in the Deliverance berm with Kit and Jakob.
The SEMC IFV "B" has pulled back damaged (main weapon knocked out). Debrief point: no secondary / anti infantry armament.
Gaughan also has his G Carrier available and to hand.

With the above, Jakob's action statements mostly stand, with one comm to Skip Dallas (assuming we have those sorts of comms)

"Skip, Jakob and team inbound. Can you keep the trash off the berm to your west? I'll join the melee below you." Skip would know the Imperial Marine logic, each enemy assumes units take care of their own and prepare for that. In effect, Jakob proposes that he and Skip attack the rear of each enemy group. The melee people would expect the 4DC to come down, and the API on berm D5 would shoot them while they did so. Instead, Skip shoots the D5 API, using the berm as protection from below, while Jakob and team come from the enemy rear.

Gaughan has an AFV but Jakob isn't giving him an order. He is, of course, sending a polite invitation. :)

"Take us over to the Vipers Nest berm. Keep us low and hug the side as we scale it. The plan is to use the heavy weapons to clear the enemy infantry from the top and side and then employ the barrel bombs. Freddie, let's get ready to rumble."

Frank will help Freddie with the bombs, but otherwise employ his gauss rifle and grenades appropriately.

Prerna redirects her team's fires.

All team members, engage any officers or NCOs in the group north of us. They're running, make them keep running."

Erica, you and I will look to the next berm and pick off anyone who comes over the top. If you see any enemy vehicles, kill them."

Freya intends to follow the path described to the Vipers Nest berm, roll over it and then take a path across the front that means "Overs" and "Unders" from the barrels aren't over our own positions...Should we need to disengage (always good to have a way out) she will plan to disengage NORTH-WEST (with wiggles) to the boundary fence before circling around anti-clockwise back to behind the SEMC base line.

n.b. She'll send her drone on a flight along that path as fast as it can go (with wiggles) to look for potential problems when she heads that way.
