Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Checkingmy comprehension: the snakeskins are "10: the Blackwater and the area in the Barrow Moor where it is sourced"?
Does that match our current heading? Do we ha e any refined bearing?

As far as I know, that is correct.RiverGreenForest wrote: ↑Wed May 04, 2022 4:22 amWhere do I find the maps? Under Barrow Mound and Maze Maps?

Gerdal speaks, now almost invisible against the backdrop, her voice seemingly coming out of nowhere, from the right angle anyway.
"* cough *"
"Yes, maybe visit the elf village is a wise move. We need to learn as much as we can about these snakemen. Can the elves be trusted to act peacefully if we approach their village Traeliorn? Maybe if we state our intent clearly. Any enemy of the snakemen must be a potential ally of theirs, right?"
"What do you * cough * think Isvand?"

Isvand listens to Gerdal. I agree. Are you all right? That cough doesn't sound good.
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Raust sneezes, one hand on Namma's hackles. "Wolves don't trust the elves." The druid considers, The ape says, 'Ears-like-leaves, make home between the two. Catch us, change our skins....' It is unclear how they change the skins of apes, but it is also unclear it is not related to the snakes. Or, if snakes or elves relate to Set or other foul worship. Wolves don't go there, to elves."

Gerdal
"I'm fine, it might just be the air this time of the day, lots of mist. May I suggest that we approach and let Traeliorn do the talking? If they turn hostile we'll just turn back. The elves are not our target here. Raust, can you or your wolves track? That might be an option, if they can smell the snake men still at the Herne Shrine."

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Not sure how to respond to that because i don't know how DM is using it mechanically. I RPed doing this with the wolves at the Herne statue and it is my understanding that's the path we followed so far but the trail is quite old.

"Not all elves view halfbreeds with disdain, companion. I was once blind to believe half-elves were mere products of a love affair and nothing more. I learned over time trading with half-elves that my judgment was wrong. For it was they that introduced me to the wonders of the outside world and piqued my curiosity about it. For if not it was them I would've stayed in my forest village blind and never interested in what goes on in the outside world. Stay close to me and any hostilities to you will have to go through me first."
Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Barrow Moor, South-west of Helix, Duchy of Aerik.
May 28th 1066.
The group make their way past the carnivorous apes, the alpha Kong and his troop settling to continue grazing among the tall grasses of the Moor and to hunt unwary deer and other bushmeat other than the eclectic group of demi-humans and wolves.
As far as a general knowledge of the Barrow Moor goes, the mist covered plain stretches for over 600 square miles (if you can have sq miles on a hex map?). Certainly at least one large barrow and perhaps more smaller tumuli would be located on each hex though no topographic map of exact locations has been produced. Some no doubt swallowed whole and covered by the changing peat bogs or overgrown with bracken and withered copses. The lizardmen or Saurons make home among the swampy delta of the Blackwater. That is a probably twenty five plus miles away. The North banks of the Merisc River lie fifteen so so to the south. Kong at least stated the snake-men were prevalent in this area.
You have no scent to follow. No specific trail. In that sense your search across the Moors for a resurgent Kali cult that transforms bitten victims into serpentine creatures is one of 'hoping for the best', with no more to go on than the gestures of a man-eating ape.
Ricardo and Pasquel bring up the rear of the group, ranger Venwynn and Traeliorn lead the way. Slowly but relentlessly south, hoping not to get lost or ambushed. In between, Raust, Gerdal, Isvand, Dale, Marcel walk in file.
Discussing the translation of Kong's words, he seemed to indicate that the elves (Ears-like-leaves) hunt the apes. 'Change our skins' is an odd statement as it could link also to the Ecdysis effect of the snake-men poison but it may just refer to being hunted and used for fur garments. Certainly the phrase was not used when he gestured the region the snake-men slithered. Maybe the poison bite does not affect such creatures or it is not something he has known. Questions perhaps that could be raised should you encounter each other on neutral terms again.
Discussing the Thornswild elves, none of you have encountered them or been there. Rumours abound (contained in other completed expedition threads) though you have voiced some concerns.
During your trek you can replenish resources with prickly pears taken from swamp cacti and those spell casters among you can gather rare flora subject to a [4d6] intelligence check.
And onwards the group trek (cue rolling of random dice ...)
Leering tall in the swirling mist over to one side of the deer path you tread looms a large menhir. A single standing stone, as tall as a tree and several times the girth. The stone is bare of the dominating lichen and moss which covers all other boulders you come across. Indeed in places the stone has been etched with large runes and designs as if several runic tablets were scrawled across its surface.

Isvand will move cautiously forward, looking for any oddities near the stone, or in its shadow.

"I agree with you Isvand. Maybe Raust can decipher the runic script?"
Traeliorn cautiously moves around the menhir in a wide circle with his sword drawn while looking for anything out of the ordinary.

Raust also searches, looking skeptically at the stone which resists the ravages of time and greenery. They examine the script to see if they recognize it and/or are able to interpret it. Then, drawing sigils on the ground with their spear, invokes the power of the forest gods to discern the magic of this place.
Examine runes, then cast Detect Magic.

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Gerdal pauses several times on the way there to have a look at different plants and bushes. She has not one, not two, but three scythes/knives for this purpose - one of them very nice looking.
"Hey, would you look at that. Look what I found!"
Herb hunting hard INT check vs 15: [4d6]=12
At the menhir, she stays a few yards away from it, letting Raust do her chanting.
"Very interesting. Its bound to serve some religious of spirital purpose. What else would it be doing out here? It might even be a portal, I've heard of those. Please be careful Raust."

Re: Barrowmoor: Exploration and Ecdysis.
Dale grabs a few prickly pears as the group winds its way through the mist, happy to avoid using his purchased rations. As they approach the monolith, he makes note that it probably has occasional visitors that keep it clear of moss and lichen. To Gerdal, the former soldier offers a more practical option, Or it might just be a path marker to avoid getting lost out here.
As it becomes apparent the the party will be taking another pit stop, Dale rounds up Riquardo and Pasquel. Looks like we'll be here for a bit and there isn't much protection. Let's not get caught unaware from behind. He asks them to keep watch with him as the others investigate the monolith - Riquardo to the north, Pasquel to the ESE, and Dale to the WSW. Dale will climb a tall rock or similar object to get a better line of sight. Every once in a while he looks back to the detectives around the monolith.
What time of day is it? Should we be thinking of making camp soon?

Dale takes security while others investigate the tall Menhir. Venwynn, Ricardo & Pasquel do as asked and between them the quartet ward the group from lurking predators.
Dale provide me a [1d6] please.
Gerdal adds to her collection of wild herbs and exotic flora, harvesting some belladonna sprigs and dark, juice bleeding berries.
Raust invokes powers to detect arcane radiance. The stone does have an aura or rather auras as a mixture of signals are found emanating from the etched runes.
Traeliorn, Isvand & Marcel search the immediate vicinity, checking the stone and any nearby smaller boulders. You find the place has been visited for evidence of old campfires, loose supplies such as empty flasks, rotten foods are dotted about. Nothing determines anyone was here recently though.
Looking at the Menhir, standing a good 30'ft in height, it strikes you that a nimble rogue might be able to shimmy up the sheer sides should one prefer a view from the top. Certainly people have climbed it for several of the etched runes are around the higher sides of the stone. Looking, the runes are not one continuous script but rather a collection of tongues and verses that are inscribed as one long meandering sentence that circles the stone or arranged in verse such as a poem. Another spirals like a snail shell, one has symbols like hieroglyphs that are held in the hands of a multi-limbed figure.
Notably around the lower half of the Menhir, the stone is slightly sandy as if the stone has weathered or eroded, little grains of rock like grit come across your fingertips.
Some of the scripts look as though etched in ancient elven, dwarven or other humanoid scripts. anyone choosing to read one provide me a [4d6] vs intelligence and a [1d20].
The higher the scripts go, the more they alter from known ancient tongues to more secretive arcane cants.
Your conclusion might be that a Read Magic, just as if you were reading from a discovered arcane scroll, might be needed to be cast on specific rune inscriptions so that the words or translation becomes known.
