I'm seeing the discussion over at the Expedition Planning thread and I'm asking myself what are the differences between 1e and OSRIC? I know OSRIC is basically a reorganization of the 1e rules, but I think they modified some numbers and mechanics here and there.

Anyone familiar with these changes that could provide and answer?

I can probably help with 1e questions, but have never used OSRIC as I am comfortable with 1e.

Like Rex, I know the 1e ways, but not so much OSRIC. Looking at it this morning, all I noticed was lack of psionics, monks, and bards. (the first two appear as supplements) Everything else I looked at seemed the same, just written better. Oh, and a better equipment table.

I never realized. Are they really interchangeable? I always assumed each other "fixed stuff" and made changes as well as reorganizing.

I would gladly play with Lab Lord or OSRIC rules, but I was honestly avoiding this and other games that said "1e" because it is so difficult to Crack open the original Gygax text.

...I have original 1e books, they were hand-me-downs from my cousin when I was a kid. They were so obtuse then (and I didn't have friends that played yet) so I ended up waiting for 2nd edition to publish before ever playing the game.

So feel you. I really like how OSRIC is laid out. But I pretty much know where everything is in the old books. I’d definitely use OSRIC if I were a new player. I haven’t looked at other versions.

Yeah, I know where to find everything I have been using them so long. They are comfortable like an old friend at this point, poor organization and all.

I poured over my brother's copy of the PHB as a kid relentlessly but hadn't looked at it since I played 2e - 30 years ago. Everything is familiar and has loving nostalgia, but finding things... ugh. And as I mentioned to Rex in a PM, my eyes aren't as good as they were back then so that hasn't helped any.

I had forgotten that encumbrance is handwaved a bit. I kept looking for weights in the equipment lists, then finally noticed (under encumbrance and movement) it is handled differently.

Every edition has its own nuances though. I'm happy to play 1e again, overall. It's just a bit of a learning curve.

Encumbrance values are in the back of the DMG, page 239 except weapons. Weapons are in the PHP page 37 (listed as approximate weight in gp).

I understand. My childhood feeling, which still sorta holds true for me is this: AD&D adds A LOT to "basic D&D" (B/X, Holmes, Mentzer) but it's....not worth the move from my go to system Mentzer. The increase in complexity from basic to advanced D&D is higher than the increase in "value". So to speak.

But in a similar way to you guys, I know every page in my original rules set, so that makes the "move" harder

Just to be sure on the matter: I know we're using the 1e proficiency rules. Are we using some sort of specialization rules too? (I'd gladly give up a proficiency in exchange of a specialization.)

Also, I think I read something about fighters using a shield bash. Does that require a proficiency?

Looks like shield bash and specializations only come into play at 4th level. Good to know.
