After tossing the smoke bomb, Thurston steps back into the running car. He looks at the rear view mirror, waits the ticking seconds for Calvin to emerge from the smoke. When he doesn't, Thurston fears the worst and speeds away.

"Damnation!" curses the stage magician, feeling the fool for tangling with gangsters, and not getting the cursed trumpet when they had the chance. My god, machine guns! They're all dead! What do I do?!

He drives the car around the corner, circling back the next street away, looking down any intersecting back alleys to see if he has a view of the building, or back, or any activity thereabouts. Hoping against hope he may see his other colleagues attempting an escape.

René Vézina

Does Rene hear approaching sirens? Listen check (12/30/60) [1d100]=80 I guess not then. Burning the body and the contraband in the warehouse might actually help the Bonato's mobster if the police are on their way but since they are not as far as Rene is concerned, diversion and covering their escape is currently the best idea. So...

"Agree", he tells Charles, "This is probably the best course of action. Leroy's direction seems a good one. I hope Thurston and Calvin are OK." he adds, as he lit the fabric on his improvised incendiary bomb. He then tosses it through the window in the direction of the door, hoping to block access and lit the rest of the bootleg, and says: "Run!"

René will try to catch up with Leroy if possible but also make sure that he is not directly visible from the window or being followed.

Calvin Beauregard

Should really be mumbling some last ritual, a 'Hail Mary' or some other plea to the divine. But he tried to fast talk his way out of a bullet to the brain.

He will blubber something about papers and photos. Mayor Haylan having one over him and a copy of the ledgers that Manusco put aside at the newspaper 'for safe keeping'.

"He wanted it printing in case anything happened to him. The lithograph presses are ready to go but I thought I could, you know, edge a little on the side to delay the publication.

That will surely happen if I don't check in."
he says, trying to bluff not getting checked out.

Dead Man Lying

Charles gets his large self through the window with some effort as Rene prepares his fiery cocktail to toss inside the building. Leroy can be heard singing and giggling to himself as he flees behind the building headed in the direction of the river. All three men start to hear the sirens in the distance, but that doesn't stop Rene from his arsonistic tendencies. He tosses the flaming bottle inside just as he sees one of the mobsters about to return to the office. The glass breaks open, sending the flammable liquid splashing across the floor. The pair gives chase after the nimble Leroy, who already has a good head start on them as he dodges in between buildings and down abandoned back alleyways.

Thurston quickly pulls the car away from the shooting mobsters, leaving Calvin behind to fend for himself. He drives around the block before doubling back to search for his accomplices, hoping against hope they got themselves away from all the shooting. The sirens continue to get louder as the search intensifies. Why don't all three of you give me a Luck roll with your next actions to help sort this all out.

Calvin continues telling his made up story, trying to prevent himself from being shot again. Bonato just shakes his head with the look of disbelief on his face. "Ya know...." Then the mobster going back to check on Leroy shouts over from the garage. "Hey boss! The tires on yer car is slashed." Bonato looks down at Calvin and frowns before speaking to his henchmen. "Shoot em and leave em lay. We need to get in the trucks and get the hell outta here." With that, the mob boss heads back towards the garage as the thug fires several rounds into the helpless Calvin, leaving him for dead on the ground as the sirens get even louder.

Thanks for playing along BT! As you may have already figured out, depending on what happens with the others, this scenario is quickly coming to its conclusion. Not exactly the best ending for your character, but I hope you enjoyed playing all the same. :SAN:

Thurston, in the running car, looks down the alleyway for any of his friends. If he sees a gangster, he pulls away. The stage magician is glad to hear police sirens.

No Stomping This Time?

Poor Calvin expires on the hard vacant ground as the mobsters scramble to get their trucks of illegal booze out of the garage before the entire building burns. Once another man comes out to give Archie Bonato the bad news about their missing captive, Rene and Charles can hear loud shouting pertaining to bloody revenge over the din behind them.

Thurston takes another left, frantically looking for his friends among these back lots but seeing only more empty alleyways. The lack of gunfire and sirens getting louder gives him some comfort as he continues to search.

Rene and Charlie continue chasing after the crazed Leroy, who still has a pretty good head start and appears to know where he is going. They see the man dart into a vacant building up ahead, but when they arrive, there is no sign of the horn toting musician anywhere. They hear a loud splash coming from somewhere behind the building, and are about to head in that direction, when Rene spots Thurston a street away, driving the car along the road very slowly, as if he is looking for someone.

The noise of old trucks starting up and the sound of the sirens closing in are the only other prevalent sounds to be heard.

"What's that noise?", says Rene. "Was that a body or a trumpet? Let's check it out." as he prepare to do so, Rene sees Thurston's car. "There's Thruston!" he tells Charles. "I'll go get him. I think you should look at that noise in the water. I'll come back as soon as I spoken to Thurston."

Rene will run to Thurston car, still trying to make sure he doesn't get shot or attract too much attention.

"Thurston", he says as he arrive, "Glad you're OK. Calvin's not with you?"

"Charles and I followed Leroy running away from the garage. We think he went in that building and we heard a loud splash coming from behind. I'll go rejoin Charles. Hide the car in a side street. Do you want to join us or wait in the car?"

"Thank god you’re alive!" Thurston exclaims with great relief to Rene.

"Calvin was gunned down!"

Thurston gets the address where Leroy went.

"I'll pull the car around and join you if it's safe."

Thurston will drive the car by the address, scanning for any gangster types. If safe to park nearby, he'll do so and join Rene behind the building. If there are gangsters or police or suspicious people around, Thurston will avoid the area.

The Crazed Escape!

A few blocks away, you hear sounds of trucks tearing away just before the screaming sirens arrive on the scene. Several more squealing vehicles appear to also be on their way. The noise of police whistles and much activity dominates the nearby streets.

Charles try’s to follow the path Leroy takes, but loses sight of him sometime after the splash. He finally spots the skinny and now soaking wet jazzman crawling up the opposite side of a narrow channel of water used for industrial needs. The young man appears even more crazed now that he is covered in filth from the stagnant, polluted water. He shakes the slime off his trumpet and disappears along the side of a rundown wear house, waving his horn around and cackling like a lunatic during the escape.

The trio of investigators eventually meet up again as the police search expands in their direction. Thurston tells the others of Calvins grisly fate, wishing there was more they could do for their unfortunate friend. When Charles mentions the direction Leroy took off, each of you realize it is the most direct route to Trinity Cemetery, just over the river, a few blocks away.

Grave Returns

The investigators, minus Calvin, jump into the car and speed towards the bridge that leads over the river to the cemetery beyond. Hard on the accelerator, Thurston beats the rush of emergency vehicles flying towards them as they drive away from the blazing scene of the most recent murder left behind in their wake.

A small accident on the bridge slows any speedy arrival to the cemetery considerably, raising nerves and tension inside the car. You could swear that you can hear a lone trumpet playing from somewhere under the bridge, but when the sound quickly fades, you brush it off as your mind playing tricks with your imagination. Eventually you make your way to the front gates and into the parking area where you spot a groundskeeper with a horrified look on his old, weathered face. You appear to be the only visitors at the moment, giving you full access to the grounds beyond.

The frightened groundskeeper just leans on his rake, staring out across the many lines of grave stones and mausoleums as if he had just seen a ghost. Or, was it a zombie?

Sitting in bridge traffic....

"Did you hear that?" announces Thurston. "A trumpet? Quick, someone jump out and look under the bridge! It could be Leroy!"

In the graveyard...

"I wonder if Leroy Turner's wife is buried here?" Thurston asks aloud as they pull into the graveyard.

As Charles asked the groundskeeper what he saw, Thurston surveys the grounds to see if there are any people walking around, or shambling tracks.

After the groundskeeper answers Charles (or if he doesn't), Thurston asks: "Is there a Marnie Turner buried here? Quick man - three greenbacks if you lead us there now!"
