Hollis immediately shows his value to the party by dispensing much-needed healing to Ethan and Gaerys. The fighters and cleric rest, while the mage continues his studies.

Gaerys and Antheris hike the five and a half miles to the Steading, or at least what is left of it.

The ranger and druid are able to make a circumnavigate the Steading from a safe distance. Smoke drifts from its center. It is quiet as a tomb.

The companions see the damage caused by the treants, the hole through which the party made its escape, and the vast damage caused by the party's magical fires. They also notice that both the north gate and east gate swing open idly.

Antheris manages to speak with one of the many crows who have gathered in the wake of the great battle of the prior night. They tell the druid that they came just before dawn, as the Steading's flames slowly died down and the smell of death filled the air. The crow says that a large group of ogres walked via the north gate just after they arrived, leaving the gate open for the direwolves, who escaped as a pack. Having access to the Steading through the burned out roof, the crows feasted upon the corpses of the giants, but were soon interrupted by a rush of humans who came up from under the Steading suddenly, then fled, terrified, deep into the forest.

Brown: still unexplored and standing.
Red: burned but still standing
Black: scorched and completely destroyed

Note the brown deletions of the walls...those are the party's hole and the one made by the treants
The two are left to determine whether to press their luck with a closer look or simply return to the party.

"It seems we are a bit late to watch comings and goings."

Gaerys asks Antheris, "Would you be willing to take animal form and more closely examine the remains? We should especially check the buildings in the northeast of the compound, where prisoners and slaves were supposedly kept. Perhaps they were taken with the giants; perhaps not. Stealth might be best, in case anyone remains, but I will come with you if you think it would be safer to have both of us looking."

If Antheris goes alone, Gaerys would circle back to the north of the steading to see if he can pick up tracks. If so, he will try to assess how long those tracks should last in a condition he can follow. A day? A week? He must decide if he thinks there is time to rest another day or two, or even investigate the greater evil lying below, while still being able to follow the giants' trail when they are done.

Vorsyin thanks Maester Llewyn deeply for both the information and the components. Troubled by what he has learned the mage retreated to a quiet place for mediation and study. He will memorize spells first before using Detect Magic to inspect the loot taken from the Steading. He will make a note of which items emanate the most.

Antheris, Druid

Antheris agrees an aerial recon of the steading is in order, and will take flight as a crow amongst the crows already in the area. He will first use Summon Animals to summon crows to him to fly with him and help divert attention from a lone crow. He will fly high above the Steading first, and approach closer if he discerns no threats below.

The mage piles the treasure in front of him, including by emptying the cloud giant's bag, made of the soft skin of a dozen hares, revealing a beautiful giant-sized sapphire and platinum necklace, a pair of snow leopard pelts sewn together to form a cloak, and a silver scroll/letter tube.

As his incantation is cast, Vorsyin notes that the following items radiate magic:

- Shield of House Umber
- Ring from Cloud Giant Finger
- Potions of course.

Antheris takes flight as a crow amongst the crows already in the area. There is no need for him to summon cover, given the large number of scavengers who have come to claim the feast. He sees that the Steading is indeed quiet. Spotting nothing alarming, he makes a few close circles around the Steading, noting nothing new or unusual. He then flies close to the buildings on the north east side that Gaerys pointed out. Hopping down to the floor of the courtyard and back up to courtyard-facing windowsill, the druid can see with his sharp crow's eyes through that the building is a barracks of some kind. It is empty and appears ransacked.

Gaerys investigates the tracks leading north. He sees old tracks evidencing a large number of comings and goings. He sees the ~12 hour old tracks of the ogres and wolves mentioned by the crow that Antheris questioned. He also sees ~day old tracks of 3-5 smaller giants -- most certainly not the giants they battled, and absolutely not Chief Nosra. The tracks, though all originating from the north gate, go in different directions. These tracks could be followed, but it is unclear whether it would be fruitful to follow the giant or ogre tracks. The term "wild goose (...err direwolf) chase" would be a fair description of any effort to follow the direwolf tracks.

Any theories of a mass giant exodus, at least by foot, from the Steading do not seem to be borne out by the tracks. Areas of the Steading remain unexplored, however.

Back at the safe house, Ethan asks Hollis if he has experience fighting demons, and if he is ready for a tough fight. He also inquires about healing for his wounds, though he is pretty stoic about it.

Once he is cleaned up, he'll inquire about whether there is anyone there who has experience as a locksmith, that might be able to come with us on a return trip, now that the giants are gone... It would be great to have someone experienced with locks and traps when we explore the ruins.

Regarding the magic items, Ethan is happy to let the others choose, though he wonders if Vor can give us more details about them.

When Antheris returns, Gaerys will head back to the safe house. It is clear there is nothing to watch. Further search of the steading may be fruitful, but it should be in the company of the entire party.

Hollis

Demons? No, thank the gods. Men are devious enough enemies to face in battle.

Hollis will motion for Ethan to sit still next to him. I think if I focus on you today, I can bring you back to full health.

Hollis will spend his entire "ration" of healing spells on Ethan today.
Cure Serious Wounds x2: [2d8+1] = 11+1 = 12, [2d8+1] = 11+1 = 12
Cure Light Wounds x5: [1d8] = 4, [1d8] = 8, [1d8] = 5, [1d8] = 4, [1d8] = 2
That should take Ethan to full HP, and even waste a few in the process. Unless it's cool to take that last CLW and apply those 2 HP to someone else?

Antheris

Antheris decides to not investigate further as a crow and returns to meet up with Gaerys.

Antheris and Gaerys realize that the the Steading has either been abandoned or, more likely based on the absence of tracks leaving the Steading, retracted somehow like a turtle pulling back into its shell. They wisely decide that further investigation should be done by the whole party.

The ranger and druid cross over the stream that they had seen before their first entry into the Steading, then hike back on the trail and reach the Fist of the First Men without incident.

Meanwhile, Hollis tends to the tough-as-hell but badly injured fighter. Ethan's nose snaps into place as he reaches full health.

[Ethan recovered 2 HP from resting, so V or Blue can get those extra 2 HP.]

The nobleman then inquires around the camp for additional followers to help the party, particularly a talented thief. Though there are a few roguish types in camp whose "talents" with locks and stealth likely landed them with the Watch in the first place, they did not possess sufficient skill or bravery to last beyond even an initial sighting of giants. None were willing to so risk their lives in any event. Ethan then realizes if there were a thief ready, willing and able to join them, the thief would have come with them on their first foray. They party will need to rely on the significant magical arsenal they possess to overcome the lack of a thief.

Vorsyin finishes his studies, ready to identify one of the magical items.

The sun hangs low in the sky. They party is brought a modest dinner of oats simmered in lamb stock. As their bellies warm with the dinner, they are left to determine whether to rest for a day to reach full strength or proceed sooner into the partially ruined Steading.

As the group is eating Vorsyin mentions his findings. I examined all the items we took from the Steading. As we knew the potions are indeed magical. The ring taken from the giant is also magical as is the shield bearing the insignia of House Umber. He pauses to take a mouthful of bread. I have sufficient time to identify the exact nature of only one of these magical items. The likelihood of me being able to identify a second is not very great. We need to decide then which item to identify and hope that it can aid our cause.
He looks around the table to see who is listening. Personally I am intrigued with the ring from the giant. A magical shield is not all the uncommon, I have created many myself. A giant sized magical ring however, that is not something I have ever encountered. I am curious as to the nature of the ring and its origin.

I am going to update Vorsyin's memorized spell list. I also wonder if we can use the giant's ring? It would be a bracelet for us, right?

Magnus told me in a pm, I think, that magic rings resize themselves to fit the wearer.

Gaerys agrees that the identify spell would be best used for the ring. He also agrees that it would be best to head back to the steading as soon as the party has regained its health.

Vorsyin nods at Gaery's backup to identifying the ring first. Vorsyin looks at the ranger. I would also like, with your permission, to examine your sword as well. I have worked for many years in creating magical items in service to Valeryia. I have never seen an item quite like your sword that is so deadly to giants alone. He looks around the room at the other brothers of the Night Watch. If we survive this return to the Steading I would like to see if I could create more swords of a similar nature to help aid you and your brothers. He coughs slightly. Perhaps I will stay in the frozen North for longer than I first anticipated...

As far as I know, we're identifying the ring and resting up, setting out when we're fully healed.

Cool. I did not see an OOC note that Identify was cast, so I was not sure if the trigger is pulled.

Since no one else cares to discuss any other option or choice, Vorsyin retreats to a quiet area to cast identify on the ring.
When the spell is complete he will study a new spell before going to bed.
