I have 5th edition questions! How exciting!!

Here is my proposed action:
Get the fuck back to the stairs then!!! Judas cover for the priest! he yells. Yarl starts shuffling back towards the stairs without turning his back to the zombies. He uses his sword and club to parry off any reach or attack as he moves back. He tries his best to cover for Tobias as they drop back.

Short Sword Parry

Club Parry

The question is, is parry even a thing in 5th edition? I was looking into it and I am not sure. It doesn't seem like players can use attacks to block incoming attacks like in the past. Does anyone know? What are your thoughts Hedge?

You could use Disengage or Dodge actions. The best source of 'parry' is equipping a shield.

Why don't you want to stab or club the creatures? Not sure there is a mechanic in 5th for just successfully pushing aside an incoming blow without inflicting damage in opponent. You could possibly suggest your melee attacks are only defensive so only inflict non-lethal damage and rather than inflict damage you push them back or give them disadvantage or need a save to keep hold of the weapon?

The other possible way is through specific melee weapons which if a successful hit is scored, disarms the opponent. Khopesh swords and various polearms acted that way.

You also have Feats which could improve melee defences such as 'defensive duelist'.

yea, there's no parry rule, the closest is the dodge action which you can take instead of the attack action

rules per written, in your case you would trade 2 individual attacks (the full attack action) for the dodge action which would give your enemies disadvantage on all attacks targeting you for the round

Actually, it is.

The Battle Master (fighter) archetype has a collection of Maneuvers they get to choose from, and 'parry' is one of them:
Parry wrote:When another creature damages you with a melee attack, you can use your reaction and expend one superiority die to reduce the damage by the number you roll on your superiority die + your Dexterity modifier.
This is not my game, so I won't presume to volunteer any unsolicited suggestions on how to resolve the situation, but I did want to at least present the formal rule for the question asked.

Bahahaah!!! This is hysterical!!

So when I posted my actions for Yarl I did so using an mechanic from an earlier edition. As I remember it, you could use an attack as a parry instead. With the parry if you roll was a hit, your attack blocks the incoming attack. I thought that fit more with a retreating movement as Yarl heads to the stairs.

I was curious if I was remembering the parry action correctly so I looked it up in the 5th edition rules and see that its not the same at all. Parry, as it was in the past, is no longer the same thing. I can instead Dodge, Disengage, use the new Parry or just stand and fight. (Each action has been described in earlier posts). I will think about what to do and revise Yarl's action.

Once again 5E makes a blurry understanding of a simple old rule. Just one of many reasons, why this will be the only 5th edition game I run. So, if you want to describe your actions as dodging or disengaging, you can simply say I disengage from straight-up attacking, parrying and dodging my way free...or something like that.

Not a fan of the new Parry rule.
Not a fan of the "death saves" shit.
Not a fan of the proficiency bonuses to hit, save, check, or parry ;)
Not a fan of Surprise and Stealth and all that.

The more I run and learn about 5E, the less I like it.
Sorry for the rant; it's Thursday and the first day back to work after a very long (and very nice) holiday break.

hey, the Shield spell should have protected tommy from the first attack and make her miss, Shield gives +5 AC as a reaction and retroactively protects against an attack, last round he would have had 20 AC (15 + 5 from shield) so i think he should be at 13/22 not 5/22? still hurt though
Retroactive spells...add that to the shit list of reasons why this will be the last 5E game I DM.

yea, we'll i may have the wrong read, to be honest i dont think its retroactive, at my table we use it like that to make the spell a bit more valuable because you could only waste it

but in truth my understanding is that a reaction is a response to something, in the case of shield, when it is declared that the PC is going to be attacked then the PC should declare it is using shield before the to hit roll is made,

just that this creates an extra posting step, i guess at te table its ok but it the pbp it would add an extra exchange (a day or 2)

this being said, im fine with however we want to play it or house rule

Kind of like, how does that work? You take damage, cast a spell and turn back time? It is a confusing mechanism.

Sounds to me like as a reaction to taking damage, the shield manifests and then halts other damage that would be sustained that round, say from two seperate attacks? Not sure. Hey, I want my team to live so not complaining to see Tommy heal up again mind.

I agree with Octavio > if we were sitting around the table...which I pray can some day happen...then yeah, this would be easier to officiate. It's all good though. Tommy should survive this fight...unless Yignath takes everybody out :D
