Using Charge means you don't act until phase 2, which means it is a whole-turn action and skips your secondary actions.

The first stabs at Ha fiercely, a mere scratch for the mighty Warrior (-3). The second stabs at Souta as her blade parties to intercept - he drops his spear and sweeps the rear of her legs with a hard thwack! (-2) Unexpected, it knocks the unarmored woman off balance!

Toshizo runs toward the bakemono-sho on the left in the kind of shuffling, feet just above the ground kenjutsu run.

Round 3, Phase 6
Eiji runs next to him, adjusting his grip on his monk's spade.

Round 3, Phase 5
Ha steps in on the armored bakemono-sho before him once more, sliding inside his spear's reach and bringing his katana around in a mighty blow, but the angle of it slides off the ashigaru plates on the creature's side. Round 3, Phase 2
Crossing the smooth cavern floor, Toshizo and Eiji both join the fray. Eiji's shovel forces the bakemono-sho to duck as it wiffs above his head. Toshizo aims a katana strike at the arrow-wounded thing, hoping to finish it off. His katana catches the off-balance, stunted bake, slicing deeply. (-8) Its spear clatters to the stone below as its body crumples.

Round 4, Phase 16
Jīva whines plaintively a moment as Eiji runs away, then sits on his haunches and guards Taka's unconscious body.

Round 4, Phase 12
The other bake, seeing his companion fall and seeing the sparks fly as Ha's powerful strokes strike off the cavern floor, blanches with horror and fear. Having backed already into dimness at the edge of the group's single lantern, he turns and flees, trying to escape to the closest tunnel!
Okay, his action is Turn and Flee:

This Option allows the character to turn in place in preparation to
run for his cowardly life. It allows him to leave Engaged status. He
may not enter Engaged status with any other character on that
Detailed Turn. The turn in place occurs on that Action Phase in

Phase closest to halfway between the Phase of the turn and Action
Phase 1 the character will execute his run. This is a number of yards

The bakemono-sho squeals like a stuck pig and sprints away southward into the darkness, towards where Souta saw a tunnel leaving this cavern. You can hear him, however, screaming an alarm the whole way...

Ha is not quick enough to act before it flees, next action is his. Light is now shown, five yards from the lantern is LIT, another 5 yards beyond that is DIM, then DARKNESS.

Toshizo pursues the fleeing man-eater into the dim light and slashes at its shoulder from behind.
Close to Engage, 5 yds (Toshizo's max walking BMA with partial encumbrance). Kenjutsu BCS 12, +10 for attack to rear.[1d20]=13 [1d6+2]=4+2=6
Second action will be another kenjutsu attack, if the bake is still alive. BCS 6 (half of regular BCS), +10 for rear. [1d20]=10 [1d6+2]=4+2=6

We are paused after Phase 6. Only Ha can act with movement (basic action) prior to the Bakemono-Sho's action (which is assumed to be running, unless he's re-engaged). Toshizo will get to act with movement on Phase 9 of the next turn, which is after the bake has run further away. So, Toshizo can use his secondary action on Phase 4 if there's an action he can take at 5 yards distance, or his basic action on Phase 9 with the Bake at either 5, 9, or 13 yards depending what happens in-between.

Ha curses under his breath as the squat bake disengages and flees before he has a chance to react. The powerful warrior churns himself into movement, charging to give chase...
So, Ha is 5 hexes from the bakemono-sho, and he has a BMA of 3. He can "close to engage" and end up two yards away at long range (-1 penalty) or he can Charge, not attacking until Phase 2 but moving up to 6 yards (optimal being 4) and getting a +1 BCS. Attacking on Phase 2 instead of Phase 2 has no detriment for Ha and he doesn't have secondary action that he's sacrificing, so might as well charge.

...I am also assuming that Toshizo and Souta don't have secondary actions they want to take at-range on Phase 4 or Phase 3. If that's inaccurate, we can fix it retroactively.
Round 4, Phase 2
Gaining on the guard with his burst of speed, he brings his sword down again in ha heavy blow, (-9) cleaving through the bakemono-sho's clavicle despite the ashigaru armor. The screams are abruptly silence as the guard slides off Ha's blade with a splorping noise.

The party hears the abrupt silencing of the guard, but cannot see Ha. Ha stands in the complete darkness of the cave, the dark tunnel before him, the dim light of the party's lantern illuminating them in the cave behind him.
Ha [1d20]=18 [1d6+6]=3+6=9
Ha Kenjutsu 12 +1 for Good Katana +1 for Charge +10 for rear facing -6 AC = BCS 18...
Finally! Without a Charge bonus, that would've been a miss. :o :shock:
End of Detailed Time:
  • Toshizo gains 1 Budo for killing guard #1 and .5 Budo for wounding Guard #2 = 1.5 Budo. (New total 6.5)
  • Ha gains 1 Budo for killing Guard #2 (new total 11.5)
  • Souta got to attack (but missed), and I'll still allow the .5 Budo for engaging.
  • Eiji could get .5 Budo for wounding under the house rule, or none because that rule doesn't exist for Gakusha.


Sin:
Each time Eiji engages in a fight, we need to consider this.

—Avoid needless violence
—Avoid killing (for any reason)
—Temple Clergy are celibate
—Avoid gluttony and drunkenness
Major sins, very serious in their effects, include:
—Rape
—Defiling Holy Place
—Murder (by treachery, as opposed to killing in self-defense)
The application of "needless violence" is subjective, but I might apply it if Eiji had given chase to a fleeing opponent. Him stepping up to attack a foe that was not attacking him personally is a questionable line for self-defense. As long as he's doing subdual damage (as with his shovel/bo) he's actually helping to avoid killing, and giving a chance for foes to be subdued rather than slain by Bushi as well.

Since the decision to step up and subdue the bakemono-sho as it tried to flee was mine and not Ffilz, I won't count it for sin in this instance. If Ffilz had specified he wanted to chase down the fleeing opponent himself, I would be likely to consider that a minor sin of "needless violence."

Ah, good point on sin. Yes, Eiji will in the future refrain from chasing down fleeing opponents unless it's clear that doing so will prevent more harm. Someone fleeing clearly to raise an alarm would probably be questionable.

And let's play with sin and dock Eiji a point of religious power (he has 3 so it won't wipe him out).

Is Taka going to fall outside the lamplight? If so Eiji will return to Taka and move her into the light (over the course of a few detailed turns...). Eiji regrets not taking a lantern...

Sounds good, does make sense to have another lantern. Eiji will return to Taka's litter and start to drag it farther if the rest of the group gets too far ahead.

I believe the fleeing bakemono-sho moves before Toshizo, which will put it pretty far into the darkness.
Toshizo's impulse is to chase the bakemono-sho and try to cut it down from behind. But he chides himself. "Don't be an over-excited little boy who wants to swing his katana at an easy target. You don't know what's in that darkness." He draws a small sheet of white paper from the bloodstained silk cord belt around his waist and wipes the monster's blood from his katana's blade before sheathing it. He readies his dai-kyu, nocks a willow leaf arrow, and steps forward a step.

The lantern bobs, scattering shadows around the large cavern as he drags Taka's litter towards them. He pauses, looking from them to the hallway, then back to them. "I hear so many of their small feet," he says, nodding to the narrow south tunnel, "Are you waiting to meet them here?"

Perhaps we should move back to the narrow part of the tunnel. We bushi can stand three abreast, with the walls of the tunnel stopping them from circling to our sides and backs.
