The princess

I would like to prepare the area well enough to be able to research spells. Right now, things are too wild to concentrate. She looks in the direction of the cave. I think I can prepare the cave for such a space, it looks like the previous occupant was able to work there. Maybe cleaning up the area more? And then I could set up the forge and get it started?

Liam nodded. I won't pretend to understand magic, but it has proven to be surprisingly practical. And a forge would be excellent. Fashioning nails alone would be an incredible help. he looked to the princess. Have you examined the cave since Cauncy cleared the rotting corpse of the sea beast?
What do you think you would need to clean up and prepare the space?

I can't tell if I am waiting for you two to finish conversing or if you are waiting for me to update. :D

The progress at the new town site continues with fervor as the day wears on.

That's probably on me. I've been all over the place recently.

The Princess

"I did check it out last night while people slept in there. It's really not too bad. There's some concern about the water holes and the cage, but they can be explored in time. Covering over them, or fixing some sort of rope handrail could be helpful. I'll fully examine the laboratory that is already there now. It will help me know more."

"Having lumber to build shelves, bridges, and a bunk would be great. Let's get that saw built today."

The Princess wants to:
Find someone to alter the harnesses to fit the zillas.
Examine the lab of the sea witch.
Help build the damn saw.

Liam will explore around the cliffs and river for rocks suitable for at least rough building materials. If there is anyone skilled in masonry, he will employ them to help with the first project being to block off the holes in the cave.

He will then help delegate workers to help preparing for the mill, leaving most of the details there to the skilled builders.

He will then check with Caleb about progress and his own thoughts moving forward.

The work at the new town site continues with fervor as townies, farmers, fishermen, and commoners alike continue to show up from Beachtown throughout the next few days, every one of them complaining about the dwarves taking over their lives. A few days into their build, most of the 100 or so people have made their way down the beach to help develop and settle a little swath of their own in the new Clifftown.

The saw mill gets set up and any large trees cut are transformed into rough building lumber. This makes building shacks and community barracks even easier as several of them start popping up throughout the clearing. Caleb gets their best leather worker on the harnesses and tack alterations, making them stronger as well as larger so they may be used on the huge lizards.

Liam and The Princess continue to make decisions and plan along with Marge and a few of the other leaders. They find plenty of loose rock to cover the holes in the old hags cave, pulling as much of the stinking vegetation from that place as they can to make it suitable for normal habitation. The hags lab was little more than a storage area, but the elven mage still thinks this area would make for a nice little laboratory area after a little lot of TLC.

Eventually, a hideous but familiar face makes its way into town, a thick looking half-orc by the name of Magg, who begins his time in Clifftown by snooping around near the shore at the rivers mouth.

Any specific details you want to add or create are entirely up to you. If you are up to the task, the place could use a bit better title as well.

Maag

Maag goes to see the fishermen down by the river. "'ow's it goin' lads? I am lookin' for me ol' mates Pete an' Joe. Are dey around 'ere somewhere?" Assuming he finds them, Maag explains the situation.

"Right den fellas, I need yer 'elp wiv sumfin'. Actually, dis ol' town needs yer 'elp wiv sumfin'".

"Captain Quark 'as 'ad enuff of sailin' 'ere. 'e 'ad a deal wiv Nehru an' now Nehru is dead, 'e doesn't want to come back anymore. Dis visit was goin' to be 'is last trip."

"Der good news is dat I 'ave made a deal wiv Quark. 'e is gonna come back, at least once more. Der bad news is dat we 'ave got to 'ave a dock 'ere in Clifftown when 'e gets 'ere."

"We 'ave not got time to build one. So we're goin' to nick one. Dat one".
Maag points back along the coast towards Beachtown. "We are goin' to take it apart an' sail it back down 'ere. Dis is were you come in. We need some boats an' blokes who can sail dem. Dat dock is 80 foot long. It's not goin' to float all der way. We're goin' to 'ave to tow it".

The Princess

She greets this Mr. Maag cordially. "I see. That's quite unfortunate, but how lucky we were that you were able to convince Quark to come back." The Princess looks him over and smiles. "If I may ask, what deal did you strike with him in order to secure this promise?"

"No judgment, we do what we must. We do need a dock. When is he due to arrive?" She looks out in the distance towards beachtown and the dock. "If I recall, the dock wasn't floating, so we'll need supports here, not to mention the possible Kraken problem." She sighs and looks at Maag. "Where are the adventurers anyway? They talked a big game of dealing with the Kraken, but I'm not eating calamari, am I?"

She nods at Maag. "Yes. I'll help. Besides, I think it would give us time to get to know each other. Right, Mr. Maag?"

Maag

"Absolutely, yer Maj. I am sure dat we will get on like an 'ouse on fire." Maag winks. "If dis job goes alright, I might even get yer a glass of grog an' a coconut."

"Quark said 'e wasn't comin' back because 'e woz only makin' money off Nehru. So I sold 'im all of der logs dat belonged to me. I 'ad a deal wiv 'im to ship dem back before. But if 'e is not comin' back dey are worthless. So I sold dem to 'im, to get 'im to make annuver trip."

Maag shakes his head when the Princess asks about Quark's return date. "I fink 'e comes back about every week".

"I 'ave put der word out wiv a few lads dat I know. Told dem dat we will need some 'elpin' 'ands on dis job. I fink day we will get a few."

The Princess

"I'll take you up on that drink, Mr. Maag, but high on my list after this new problem is fixing this drink situation. The options are positively ghastly."

She turns to Liam and drags him into the logistics. "Ok. We need pylons for any new dock. Unless you can think of another way to support it, I'm all ears. Mr. Maag's lads can reclaim the decking and hopefully get it over here. We need to keep an eye on the waterline so that the lads can make the journey safely, and identify a place the dock could be remounted at the delta."

"Anyone ever build a dock before? Who built the current one?"

Liam

As he is his routine, he checks with Caleb and others about how things are going and shares his plan for using the the more crude huts for storage as people move out of them and into more permanent structures thanks to the newly operational lumber mill. He also makes sure there is a share of lumber being set aside each day from production to begin building a more protective structure around the mill operation itself. No reason to leave the workers there exposed to the element if it can be helped. As an aside, he coordinates with one of the farmers to begin gathering the sawdust so that 1, it is out of the way of the work in the mill, and 2, it can be used as compost for further fertilizing of the tilled soil and smaller private gardens that will hopefully also begin popping up soon.

When The Princess finds him and drags him away from his work helping clear more land ever northward, he reluctantly comes into the conversation after passing his scythe over to a younger man.

In this case I would call it reclaiming what was hijacked from us, but go on. Do you think it would be freezable to construct a floating dock on pontoons? Then it would be a simple act of anchoring it to the bottom rather than driving pylons down... at least as a temporary fix until more permanent work could be done.

As for how to get it back, I would say our best bet is broad daylight since the dwarves can comfortably see in the dark. No reason to blind ourselves in the process. We depend on the captain making regular stops here, we need to do whatever we can.

Captain Bing was docking near the mouth of the river here... we should go investigate the shoreline here to find the best possible place to build it. Would you two Gentlemen help us with your expertise?

Speaking to the group in general We have had a lot of new arrivals since the Dwarves raided Beachtown. Has anyone taken stock on what has been brought this way in the way of tools, boats, and other equipment? Do we have an official census on just who is here and who is yet accounted for?

The fishermen agree to steal reclaim their dock in the daylight, as long as they don't have to do it alone. "Freezable pontoons? Not sure we got the means to construct such a thing. What'd ya have in mind?" Both men nod at the idea of searching for a new place to build the dock.

The assembled group looks around at each other when Liam asks about keeping track of all the who's and the whatnots. Caleb look up. "Well, we though you was doin all that cipherin stuff."

"I 'ave spent a bit of time watchin' der dock. Der dwarves 'ave got no interest in it. Dey do not use it an' it is not guarded. So takin' it away in daylight is probably der best way."

"I am willin' to lead der mission back to Beachtown to get der dock. I 'ave got Arte' an a couple of 'is mates, an' der lads wiv der boats 'ere. Anybody else comin' along?"

Liam grabs a stick and begins drawing in the sand to demonstrate what he is talking about. A pontoon is like an enclosed boat... But small scale, this of a barrel. So you could line up barrels or something like them and long the length of the dock in rows... it is just enough to support it. We anchor it periodically so that it stays in place and of course would be put on more typical pylons closer to shore to secure it in place... This allows a floating dock, easier to construct and moves with the water more for high and low tide... I have seen them before and they seem quite ingenious. We could get the builders that put together the mill to help fashion something workable for us... Even if it is only temporary until we can construct more pylons down the length. Maybe we can get some made to help float it here as well...
OGRE MAGE wrote: Tue Nov 23, 2021 3:03 pmBoth men nod at the idea of searching for a new place to build the dock.
Liam will join them and help where he can, pointing out the area where he and the party saw Bing's ship anchored before in case that might be a good lead on where to start.

Liam blinks a moment and then laughs. Fair enough... soon as the other two task are taken care of he will grab a piece of paper from his supplies as well as something to write with and begin quickly getting a rough estimate of people and important supplies, going group to group and getting an inventory together, making special note of anyone with special skills.

Work on the cave continues, as well as could be expected. Liam takes a crew across the cliffs to find a small inlet in the rocky formations where the rough waters are partially blocked by a half ring of taller cliffs, making for the perfect place to anchor a large ship off shore. The only problem with this area is that there is no way to get ashore without the use of a smaller boat of some kind.

When he lays out his plans for the floating dock, quite a few of the workers shake their heads. "Sure. I've seen em. You know where we can get a few hundred empty barrels real quick like?"

Maag leads his crew back to Beachtown, seeing firsthand (again) what the the dwarves have done to the place.

Oddly enough, the only one who seems concerned about his crew simply taking the existing dock is none other than Randall the barman. He rushes up to his friends, perplexed.

"Hey! Mi juss taught a sumting! If ya take dis dock, what will da ship tie off too when dem return?"

The Princess

She gets to work making boards for the dock. Not knowing how wide they should be, she simply doesn't cut them after they are planked. "We need a few for pylons, so make sure to set a couple of dozen aside."

As the process continues, she goes with Liam to take the census. She's most interested in finding Nallissa, the old ladies who do most of the housework, and the teenage girls who cause the most trouble.

The Princess watches the offshore proceedings with interest. How far away is the safe harbor? Could we make a dock from that point to the shore/rocks? Securing the dock in the rocks and such. I guess the question is: is that safe harbor the only place to anchor in the area?
