D&D (1974) Limited recruiting

#1 Post by Paladin »

An idea I've been kicking around for a while.

The world:
It was a golden age. An age of tall elves, of stout dwarves and brave halflings. Roaring dragons. Arch-mages hurled fireballs and devout priests called down the favor of the gods.

But the gods are silent now.

The mountain halls which once rang with the sound of hammers and belched smoke from endless forges lie scorched and empty. Mouldering corpses and sundered weapons bear mute witness to the savagery which wrought the destruction of the dwarves.

No swift elven feet pass through the forest. Their shaded glens and sun-dappled clearings are eerily silent. The full moon calls no fey creatures to dance beneath the stars.

The rich fields of the old shires lie fallow. Plowshares rust and village greens mourn the patter of childish feet and giggling merriment.

Magic fails us. Wizards are hunted now, bereft of their once-feared spells and naked before the rabble. Priests are burned by the once-faithful, now estranged from their formerly benign gods. Temples and monasteries are sacked, murals defaced and statues stricken down.

Desperate heroes seek the old magics in dark and hidden places. Daring men ascend the highest peaks to seek out their gods. Children seek the elves and sprites of wood and stream, but so far the search is fruitless.

All is chaos and fire, death and the ascendance of Man. For we alone survived the war. We forged ahead when the gods abandoned us. When magic vanished and the golden veneer tarnished black. We are the strong.

It is an age of iron now. Hammered black and ground sharp. Warlike and unforgiving. Even the remotest hamlet will not escape the violence which sweeps the land. Robber barons and petty kings amass their armies, seeking riches and conscripts to consolidate their power.

War has even come to Appleby. Even now, armed men gallop through the streets and archers encircle the tiny farming village. They fling torches upon dry thatch and flames soar skyward. Blood flows and screams rend the night air.

All is stolen or killed or ruined beyond repair.
You sit bolt upright and fling your blankets aside. Bare feet hit the cold floor and you shade your eyes against the bright glow of red madness outside your window.

What do you do?
The crunchy bits:

Ruleset: D&D - Original 3 booklets only

I've resisted the urge to start another game for a while. Didn't want to repeat past mistakes. But I think I've learned a few things and would care to try again.

I want 1-3 players to start. I like to write--you should, too. I don't like numbers or rules, so there will be a relative lack of both. It's still D&D from the little brown booklets, but done my way. DM rulings are common and house rules are woven into the fabric of the game.

Don't be in a hurry. I work like a dog in construction and this is as much a creative outlet for me as it is for you, so I enjoy taking the time to craft a really good post. I'm aiming for a couple of updates per week. Maybe more, once we get underway. But only count on two.

Humans are the only playable race. If you want something else, we can negotiate, but there is precious little beyond humanity in the world today.

Fighting-man is the only class option available. Unless you wish to play a wizard without spells or a cleric without gods.

You begin play with whatever you can grab from inside your home as you rush out to escape the slaughter. Nothing else. Once you sign up, I'll PM you stat arrays to choose from and we'll go from there. I'll need nothing from you except your character's name, age, equipment, and those stats.
Thanks for reading. :)

I would be very interested in OG D&D in this setting. I’m newish to PBP, running a Traveller game on another site, but would love to give this a go as a player. I owned this set back in the day along with Blackmoor, Greyhawk and Eldritch Wizardry. Mainly played AD&D as player and DM but still have very fond memories of the first Little Brown Books.

Cheers

Here you go, amigo. I rolled these on the US dice roller, 3d6 in order. Feel free to pick one you like. If we don't get anyone else and you want to run multiple characters, you're welcome to. Though don't feel like you have to. We'll likely run a DM NPC or some hirelings in either case, too.

I guess the fighting man dice gods were off duty :D but these two will do I think:

Meet identical twin brothers “Wil” and “Ken”. Strong and handsome boys, young men now really, from the farming ville of Appleby.

The pair are good natured, highly competitive, inseparable and always getting into trouble, even though Kenrick usually knows better. Both are well loved and oft-pardoned by the other farming families in Appleby. The village practically raised them both since their mother passed during the difficult birth of twins.

Their father Cathach is a stern man and a firm believer in “spare the rod and spoil the child.” He works his hardscrabble plot often with the two boys pulling the plow as punishment for their latest troubles.

He loves his boys dearly but wishes they would grow up and take life more seriously.

You might tempt me to change my mind about gaming less. I like the simplicity of it.

Hatchet (d6), heavy winter robe (AC 9), sack containing side of jerky, a waterskin, and a small knife.

(DM's option whether to do this) Isala, Aegon's wife. Their two young boys ages 5 and 7. (Things could get quite grim trying to escort non-combatants. If you want to off-screen their slaughter / disappearance at the start of this thing, ok by me. Though I would prefer Aegon not to be the guy who abandons his family.)

Quick questions for Paladin.

Are we allowed to adjust our prime stats per Men and Magic before the game starts or are we done and start from “Bare feet hit the cold floor?” *. Also, do we need to roll for hp or are you tracking all that behind the veil?

*I’ve read M&M a few times now and I’m still not clear on how this actually works in practice. It says you can adjust units so indicated for experience only but does that mean we actually change stats or just have the regular stat and some + for purposes of the experience bonus.

(It’s been a looong time since I’ve used M&M so bear with me for maybe obvious questions  )

EDIT - found this very topic on the ODD Reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/odnd/comments/ ... tual_bump/

Looks like a virtual bump for Xp purposes.

Ok, I couldn’t help myself…

The boys wake with their father standing over them, his grim face in twisting shadows.

“Da..?”

“Papa..?”

They sit bolt upright and fling their blankets aside. Bare feet hit the cold floor and they shade their eyes against the bright glow of red madness outside the window.

In the distance they hear the din of slaughter. Women screaming, the shouts and laughter of evil men, and the galloping of horses.

“War is on us my sons, I’m too slow to run but you might make it if you leave right now.”

“We can fight Da…!

“Yes Papa! They can’t…”

Crathach shakes them both sharply and his tone is both resolute and desperate as he looks in their eyes.

“No! No!! You'll both run and run now that you might live!”

Cowed and fearful Ken and Wil hurriedly dress pulling long wool tunics over night shirts and donning rough trousers with tooled leather belts.

As the boys are tying leather waist-girdles and shrugging into thick hooded cloaks of rough spun wool, Crathach stuffs whatever meager belongings are nearby into a large sack; a strike-a-light and flint in a leather holder, a wine-skein, a dozen apples, half a cheese wheel, and a small sack tied with twine holding dried fruits and roasted nuts.

“No time for boots boys. Tie the laces and wear them around your neck till your well clear from here. Run for the woods and make for your “Squirrels Nest”and go to ground.

If I don’t come for you tomorrow, I’m not coming and you need to make your way to the old watchtower near the river ford. If It still flies our Lord’s banner tell them what happened here and maybe it’s not too late to raise the Fyrd.

If they’ve fallen, keep to the woods and make your way to Farmington or Ashvale. Remember, if you don’t see our Lord’s colours keep well out of sight!”

Wide eyed and white faced the boys watch as he ties the bag shut and hands it to Kenrick along with their grandfathers “campaigning knife” in it’s worn leather sheath. There is a whetstone on the outside covered with a clever flap of leather “so you can sharpen on the march” their gran-da used to say grinning toothlessly. Ken quickly secures it tightly to his girdle under the cloak and takes the sack from his father.

Crathach hugs them both fiercely in a crushing embrace then pushes them away from the door. “Now off with you lads, out the back window and stay off the bloody roads! Don’t you dare look back. Run, RUN!”

The boys scramble through the small window and run low and barefoot through the fields trying to keep to the shadows.

When they near the woodpile Wil remembers the axe in the chopping block and pulls it free as they pass by.

“Pig-Splitter” is a sturdy one bladed axe, it’s stout oak handle wrapped with a rough leather thong for grip. The axe serves as tool for both woodsman and butcher on their small farmstead and he finds some comfort in its heft.

Suddenly the darkness fades as the thatch roof of their hovel blazes. Ken pulls Wil to the ground and the boys worm crawl through the rest of the field and scamper into the woods at the edge of the farm on all fours as their burning home lights the night sky behind them.

Tears stream down their faces as they tie their boots on scuffed feet and wordlessly they make their way into the dark woods, the sounds of the dying village fading as they get further and further into the trees.

Hey, sorry for my absence. Due to some unexpected changes out here in the "real world," I will be unable to post for a couple of weeks while I sort things out.

Thrilled to see interest in the game and truly sorry to pause things before we even get started. But as soon as I can get back, I'll request a forum and see if you gents are still interested.

Hopefully around mid-December.
