"We cleared a barrow with many clay urns. They're probably worth over 25gp each. We only brought back what we could carry. We're making an urn run. We'll sell the batch, split the funds evenly minus horse supplies and guide fees. Though to be clear, one even split will go to the person loaning us a the horse who was there on the last run.
The horse is now outfitted to carry more than last time. As long as your dirty beast is an enemy of my enemies, then it is welcome. Perhaps it could be outfitted to carry extra urns? In any case, we leave tomorrow morning."

Fyi, I'd still like two mercenaries to care for the horse. This run is for speed and gold, maybe a bigger group will deter small bands of would-be problems. Fingers crossed.

Also, I don't technically know if it's "tomorrow morning", it's whenever everyone has all their hit points back, which is like tomorrow or the next day. I'm sure Spearmint is keeping track.

He also peers outside to check if the tattoed beggar is back in his previous spot. Can Cosmo see him ?

The beggar is not in the verandah. You can buy any extra supplies you want, just list what you purchase and reconcile the gold from your wallet.

Golgarth, arising from his deathbed in the hospice, returns to the tavern. He pays for another two days of premier deluxe accommodation, inclusive of all meals, hot tub and laundry.

After spending a day in prayer and fasting, he makes himself available for expeditions that depart town from the 19th onwards.

I will basically lurk on the forum until expeditions return to town and I am in a position in the calendar to mix again with folks.

You take a seat, by the warm hearth, hanging your pack and cloak on a wall peg behind. The bard Bublé croons some new anthems, a group of northern barbarian types with braided blonde beards and greataxes drink flagons of frothy ale. Across from them two elves chat regarding various hunting grounds, a set of mail clad men eat in solemn fashion, breaking bread and supping red wine from gilded goblets. A wizened mage with a bent staff has a private booth. He feeds crusty morsels to an owl perched above him

The atmosphere is genial. You are not out of place for other new comers sit or stand, ill at ease or charting in various corners of the room.

Guntar welcome to the village. Fellowship as you see fit.
May 16, 1066

Gunter Relaxes into his seat with his back against the wall and rests easy. It felt fantastic to just be sitting without his heavy pack and crossbow.

He studies the menu a moment as if he could read and extends a dirty calloused hand to Bollo in greeting.

“I’m Gunter Red Shirt, free blade er bowman anyway…Just arrived in town today after a bloody long yomp from Iron Motte. I’ll take a bowl of bygones bailiff, heavy on the sop and a pannikin of water if you please.

I’ll be needin a pallet in the commons for a few days too if you’ve room;what time’s breakfast?”


Gunter’s voice is a deep sonorous bass, completely incongruous with his boyish appearance.

The Brazen Strumpet Tavern

Bollo serves the young adventurer. "Common room in the stables annexe is quite clean. Sheets laundered daily. Breakfast is in the mess room around the back, anytime you get there. Porridge oats and what not always simmering in the pot.

If you be looking for adventure, you can do no worse than chat with the patrons. They might have need of new blood, most likely after spilling blood and guts and yesterday's stew upon the Moor.

Dwarves be recruiting I hear for a long trek across the wilderness. Take several weeks I suspect, though most of the other group's go for a day or so to the local mounds nearby.

If you are trekking there though, I would suggest you script your 'last will & testament' just so any post mortem affairs can be rightly sorted. Priests across the market square can deal with those. Take any confessions and clean you of unrighteousness before you trek out. Put you right with God before you meet him.

Mind you if you don't have any unrighteousness but want some, the Foul Pheasant has a few gentleman's entertainments to spend your coin upon."


He serves a beer to Guntar, leaving him to consider options regarding what to do next.

it might be at this point, as several expeditions are still current, other players are yet to appear in town on the same calendar date. But you can still roleplay in the village and check out other locations as you familiarise yourself with various goings on.

“Sheets? In the commons? Right palace you’re running here mate. I can pitch me own straw if the pallet needs stuffin.” he says smiling.

Gunter looks down forlornly at the beer, torn between a good pint and a thin purse. Sadly, he slides the beer back to Bollo.

“Sorry mate but I only ordered yesterday’s pottage and water. Them other three shiners was for me bunk & breakfast.”

Gunter tears through whatever food comes his way with the insatiable appetite of a young soldier. When he’s finished (a.k.a the food runs out) he sits back working his teeth for any loose morsels and listens unobtrusively for any good tidbits, rumors or advice from the other patrons.
Gunter will keep eyes and ears open for any rumors or interesting conversations.
He’ll engage nearby patrons in conversation if they seem amenable.
If approached by other patrons he will be friendly but non-committal until he gets the lay of the land.

The Brazen Strumpet Tavern

Bollo, having poured the beer slides it back. "We all know the frugalities of adventuring. Poverty is a great motivator to explore. Call it on the house. Then when you strike it rich you will choose to host your feasting in this humble tavern." he says. Looking around, the tavern a bit a bit more than 'humble'. Oak beams timber frame the property, a raised stage, stone hearth with wrought castings and a large stable and bunk room annexe. It seems at least the tavern makes a profit from those adventuring though by the looks of the patrons, few dress in silks and mink furs.

Guntar. There are rumours. What tavern would not have tittle-tattle gossipped around. But the Brazen Strumpet also has various tributes and memorials hung around the walls, which testify in various ways to fallen adventurers or treasure recovered from the infamous mounds.

(you can read through threads to garner current in game rumours). There is talk of a strange leprous pox affecting settlers near Bogtown, a pair of bounty hunters scouring the village for a fugitive, Lord Krothos raising taxes, boglings raiding the nearby carp pools, cursed adventurers losing their minds ... the list goes on.

These are some of the current (non-player character) patrons in the tavern.

Agrippa, foreman at the Silver Standard sits at a table with some of his wagon drivers, talking trade routes.

Guntar socialise among the patrons as you see fit.

Nursing his precious tankard of the fine local beer he approaches the table of northmen.

“‘Ello gents, name’s Gunter. Just got into town today and looking for work. What brings you lot to Helix?”
Gunter tries to engage the northerners in conversation about what brought them to Helix and what local work might be available. He’ll do his best to avoid a situation where he has to buy beers for the Viking types :D.

Still recuperating and only just recently awoken from his comatose state, he stumbles to the tavern saloon from his bedrest in his room.

It is May 17th, (the earliest day he returns to walking wounded status), noticing some companions and fellow adventurers have returned to the village from expeditions and new brave hearts have arrived in search of fame and fortune or a glorious death. So far he has achieved none of the three.

He finds a seat next to a young red-shirted warrior type. "At least it will hide the blood stains", he thinks.

"Hello. Guntar is it? Always a need for swords-for-hire in this place. If you are looking to explore nearby regions I have a few rumours I might consider following up on but need assistance with."

The cleric approaches the newcomer.

The Brazen Strumpet Tavern

16th May 1066

Guntar enquires into the fortunes of the northern barbarians. They boast of 'raids' and 'squishing hobgoblins' and show various spoils taken from the dead, trinkets like bracelets, leather goods and fur lined jerkins.

"We took a commission to get rid of some trouble makers. Took some heads too." one boasts, wiping his axe blade edge with his finger. "When the mercenary guild hire us, you know it is trouble." he says before getting hushed and passed a frothy ale to drink.

Like most groups that arrive in the village, these wanderers came with an interest in the Barrow Mounds and hire themselves out in various capacities such as guarding shipments for the Silver Standard. But they have a certain notoriety in their 'modus operandi' and have clashed with local militia on occasion.

Your evening is uneventful, quiet without harassment. Local patrons are polite, warning you to not venture upon the Barrow Moor for fear of death or encouraging you to make a name for yourself in equal measure. You eventually retire to your bunk with lots to think about. The next day you are in the tavern around lunch time when the cleric Golgarth approaches you.

17th May 1066

Gunter rises early, careful not to disturb the other common room patrons and goes outside for an early shower. He curses the cold water but clean(ish), shivering and wide awake he dons his kit, (clothes and gambeson still damp from the dunking he gave it all before bed) and spends the early morning hours servicing his weapons and armor. Satisfied he'd pass one of Rooster's inspections he heads off to breakfast (as much as he can pack in without annoying Bollo too much), drops most of his gear in the lockup, then spends the rest of the morning reconnoitering the village of Helix.
Dressed and armored with shield slung, Axe and Dagger on the belt but the rest of his gear in the lockbox back at the inn.

Wandering back to the Inn around noon he sits and ponders what five coppers might get him for lunch when an obviously wounded but recovering man approaches and joins him at the table, wincing as he eases into his chair.

It's pronounced Gunter he says smiling. You're welcome to join me table mate, you look like you need to rest a bit anyways. What in hells happened to you if you don't mind me asking?

"By Cromm Cruach, I wish I could spin a yarn of derring-do, holding the line against the undead hordes or snatching the maid from the jaws of the dragon. But alas, my curiosity and rotund belly got the better of me and during an expedition to scout out a Sauron Barrow Mound, I was picking some prickly pears from a wilderness cactus and fell into a sinkhole trap where a carnivorous plant chewed my ass and ground open my ribs." he jests with the wide eyed newcomer, showing a grizzly scar or two.

"By grace, my comrades pulled me from the jaws of death and under the comforting hand of a chapel acolyte, I was nursed back to life. A week I have drafted in comatose stasis but today I at least can walk again.

I will go to make my Thanksgiving in the chapel and shrine later. By grace again my wounds will heal and after a day of prayer and fasting I will set my feet upon the narrow roads to adventure again.

I came to Helix to restore Cromm's name and rebuild His places of pilgrimage. So discovering some gold and ancient relics will undoubtedly help towards that vocation. Are you a praying man of the Old Ways?"


The cleric shares his story. (Gunter you can check out the encounter in the Secret of the Saurons' thread). He can also share regarding his exploration to gather spider silk and the chalk mine tunnels (completed expeditions thread: spider silk).

He asks Gunter regarding his own faith. Does he worship Cromm or Ygg or another deity. What are his plans? Does he have any particular skills? Golgarth, has a few options and plot threads to follow which he currently mulls over.
probably by this actual in game date, other expeditions would have finished and returned to town, but as those player's are still active in those adventures and not 'in town' by this present ooc date, I want to organise something rather than waiting until after Xmas to join a new group.

I've walked a long road stonefather but even in my ville back East we still remember the old ways, the Anganach. I'm true to Crom Cruach as was my father, and his father before. Although truth told it's been many years since I've been to worship.

I'm a soldier by trade, crossbow infantry, but 'm a freeblade now, my service in the companies honorably completed. I heard rumors and stories about wealth and fame to be had in Helix and I've spent the past few months walking here to make my fortune as an adventurer.

You know as a fit man under the Crown that I can't take your charity but I will happily eat your fast leavings tomorrow in exchange for honest labor at your church as fair trade. You can tell me more about the trials of your gnawed behind and where I might find some work around here.

Sits at a table with Gunter. He is glad to hear the young warrior is 'of the Faith'. He shares some insights he has gathered.

you can read his encounter with the village vicar on pg5 of the Helix chapel thread. The main information is this:
He believes the old Cromm Cruach priest lived in an old terrace in the village. An old housekeeper may still be there but doesn't know the address. The priest went to a nearby settlement to dug a new well. The Bogtown Well was dedicated so the cistern must have been completed. But the cleric never returned here to continue his ministry.
"The big church across the market square is actually dedicated to St Ygg though the foundation stones and crypts originate to Crommian times. Apparently the chapel fell into disrepair during the dark ages and though an elder mason cleric took a vocation here, he seems to have moved on recently to Bogtown. He dug and dedicated a new springwater well there and never returned.

I actually think something more serious happened to him than just being waylaid or reassigned in duty but Vicar Othar cares not to investigate.

I was thinking of paying the old Elder's housekeeper a visit and then travelling to Bogtown. In the meanwhile I mull over these plans to restore some civic pride and Cromm Cruach pride in the village by addressing these needs. The patron lord here has given me a commission to restore sewers and water works, but I need to raise the finances to begin the task."

"Excellent. Community spirited and something that Lord Krothos would love to generate more of.

Why don't you check out the cisterns and spring source. We have a main well for common use in the village and pump pipes in various locations. Most of the villas have well access to the underground reservoirs but the poorer terraces share distribution. Providing clean water and a proper latrine drainage to take excess flow away from the village would be a great project."


He gives you a stamped vellum with a signet ring seal of approval that lets you inspect water sources with a view to assess the state of disrepair and budget any restoration needed.

For every 1gp value you contribute to the Helix Cistern project you will get 1xp in return and also a 10gp/1xp equivalent for donations.

Let me know in your private thread when you visit the initial village wells for inspection.
"Lord Krothos will match, coin for coin, any fundraising towards the village cisterns. I assessed a preliminary target of needing 2,000gp to address the village needs. A collection from locals has raised just short of 2% which is being held in the jewellers vaults for safekeeping. Not to be sniffed at, but hardly a scratch in the surface."

He considers what he can request of Gunter.

"Work can be obtained in the village labour gangs. Road building, latrine digging or roofing the barrack's. But the recompense only covers enough costs to have basic upkeep in the tavern.

So folk hire themselves out via the Mercenary guild but I you have to contract at least a season to them rather than being on an ad-hoc basis.

The village has a specialised industry in harvesting spider silk and exporting the threads in spools or weaving garments, often very valuable ones with the precious threads. But collecting silk from predatory arachnids is a dangerous task. I went with a group of fellows and we explored an old chalk mine where the spiders lurk. The quarry is disused now but could be reopened if the spiders driven off and the site secured. The chalk is a good fertilizer and Cromm knows how poor the soil is around here so the mineral is a great farming resource.

Everyone else just explores the barrow mounds or the region and hopes to strike it rich.

If we team up, we can share any risk and reward equally. I was thinking to either return to the quarry and scout out the side tunnels or travel to Bogtown and locate the former minister.

Well that’s quite a tale Golgarth. I’m no Palideen, but the story of the old stonefather doesn’t sit right with me either. I’d journey with ye to Bogtown if ya wish. I’d like a few more stout lads to man our shield wall first though. No offense to your holy arse meant but strength in numbers and such.

I think I’ll pass on the guild work. I came to Helix to make my fortune, not shed my blood for some other sod. Mayhaps we can join our causes. My currently empty pockets can help fund your new cisterns if we can bring back wealth from the Barrows or other such troves.

Perhaps you could enquire of the Silver Standard Mercantile if they have any wagons or that need guarding on route or run any stagecoaches in that direction."
