Founding Clifftown

Keg looks like he is taking more time than usual to process all this.
So... you want to make my gems into money? So I can buy more money?

The Princess
She takes her time and tries to keep her cool. Adventurers are a special breed.
"Sort of. I want to have your gems available so that others can trade gold for them at a profit for you. Like this:" She pulls out some gold and reveals a gem from her pocket.
"This gem is worth 20 gold. People would give you, us, 22 gold to buy it. Easier to carry or hide, you know." She drops 22 gold in a pile. "And they would take the gem. We get a profit of 2 gold for the service."
"And we would buy gems from people with the gold, again at a profit. Most places don't take gems for payment. Get it?" The Princess smiles and collects the gold. "A fine way to make a profit on the treasure you have. Merchants and nobles do it all the time, why not you?"

Sir William Narramore and Keyon
After a night's rest, Narramore strides into the sunshine to seek his companions. Part of him hesitates upon catching sight of Keyon, but he reasons that the former pirate has accomplished a few good deeds since coming to the island--perhaps he seeks to atone for his wayward lifestyle here?
Whatever the case, he greets Keyon with a nod and a pleasant word. Keyon casts his ever-present grin at the towering knight and waves him over. "Come along, big man."
They stand together, awaiting the arrival of the ladies. Keyon cuts his eyes across at Narramore. "Sooo...you and Elnaerel?" He raises an eyebrow and nudges an armored shoulder.
Narramore opens his mouth, closes it, and finally shrugs. "I don't know," he admits.
The elf chuckles. "Well, she certainly knows. You'd better prepare yourself, my friend." His smile fades and he nods slowly. "She's a good one. Dedicated to her goddess and fearless in battle. You could do a lot worse, mate." He claps Narramore on the shoulder and returns his attention to readying his gear and the carpet.
"Aye," Narramore replies. "The princess said something along those lines." He waits, completely out of his depth, for the arrival of their companions.

Elnaerel
Elnaerel arrives slightly later than usual. After a restful night's sleep with strange dreams, she has woken up, in a better humour than usual. She has taken her time with her prayers to Ehlenestra and taken special care in her appearance, burnishing her shield boss and rim and her characteristic Chalcidian winged helmet. She stands proud with her new acquired morningstar and joins the pirate and the paladin, ready for a ride and to save some animals from some monsters.
"Good morning, gentlemen."[/dialogues] She nods at both. "I pray to Ehlenestra that we are successful in our mission. I'll do my best to make us all return in one piece.
Where's Feanol? I hope she didn't stay long last night studying the stars."

She grins and nods. "Excellent. I will have to discuss all this with Nallissa, but I think we can find a cut that you will be happy with. I don't know how much you'd like to be involved in the details of the business, but money for little work is always a good investment." She looks Keg over and gets a mischievous grin. "If you'd care to help any customer who falls behind on a loan know the situation, then I think a larger cut would be in order."
"I hear you're going out to cut grass, be careful and come back in one piece. I need to get this place cleaned up, and then I'll go let Nallissa know."

Chuckles. Yeah, we can work something like that out. You hold this and deal me in on the trade business of yours.

Feanol
Sorry, busy day yesterday.
Feanol shows up in her adventuring gear, looking a bit more energetic and ready to go than you've seen her in the past. "Hi all, are we going to go check out the lizards or not?"

Liam and the Princess can continue organizing in Clifftown as they see fit.

Re: Founding Clifftown
Liam continues working with the people. The following day, he helps turn some of the lean-tos into walls for more usable shelters, helping rig rooves and rubber tree lief thatching. He is a blur of motion from dawn to dusk helping where he can.
One of the other jobs he begins to coordinate is marking what trees will be cut, what trees will be saved, mainly the biggest old growth trees for shade and using the dead fall for fires. He will also make sure they keep a few stands of bamboo for future use.
He will also keep an eye out for sources of food as they clear ground deeper into the jungle.

Re: Founding Clifftown
With the help of Liam and the advice of the Princess, the new settlement is well under way by the end of their second day. Even more townies have come to the call and joined in on the hard work of clearing out more area and getting structures built.
There is talk from the newcomers of more dwarves amassing in Beachtown, but with all the work that needs to be done here, there is little time to worry about such things.
Liam picks out a new spot for his farm and animals, while The Princess tries to find the perfect spot to rebuild the Hi-Lo and her own little shop as well.
Caleb heads up the farmers, clearing massive swaths of land near the cliffs where they find great soil for growing crops.
The work continues all through the second day, and by nightfall, there are enough shelters built to safely house the entire workforce so that none of them have to sleep in the stinking, humid cave again.

Liam will make sure to find time to speak with the newcomers, looking, of course, for familiar faces just as much as new ones, asking them for news and in general what they do so he can help them find a proper place to work and be useful. Not in a bossy way, but in a let me help you attitude.
He then makes some figures for how much more housing they need and how best to allocate labor to help build that, offering any and all of his tools to the labor being done and spending ample amounts of time with his scythe to help clear more land.

The Princess
The Princess helps out and uses her magic to assist where she can. During the day she is looking for Nallissa and asks newcomers if they've talked to her.
She spends time in the cave, exploring the workbench and trying to determine if it could be reused and if she could set up her forge inside, exhausting the smoke through the ceiling hole.
Creating and attaching a rope ladder to the cliffside for easy access to the roof of the cave is a goal of hers.
She finds Liam at some point to chat. "Mr. Liam. What do you think of setting up this saw? We could use it to create proper lumber and make more permanent and sturdy houses. Besides, we need a dock."

Liam nods and turns taking a quick assessment of the overall progress. OM, is everyone in an available shelter?Monsieur Rose wrote: ↑Fri Oct 29, 2021 2:51 pm The Princess

Once we have everyone in at least a temporary shelter, I think you are right that we should prioritize getting the mill running. With dimensional lumber, we can begin making sturdier housing. Just what do we have to work with here? he will then join her to examine the contents of the "mill kit" and call over one or the more trained builders and see what it would take to get it running off the river.

Re: Founding Clifftown
Once everyone has a temporary place to shelter, the topic of the mystery crate is broached.
When Liam and the Princess call over the more experienced builders on the crew, they begin digging through the blades, frame, and belts inside. "Why weren't we using this all along?"
The entire contents of the crate is removed and spread out on the ground, with two unnamed farmers looking the contents over carefully as they discuss the possibilities. "This were meant to run on horse power since there aint no water wheel for propulsion, but these horse harnesses could probably be modified to fit them lizards!"
The other man rubs his chin. "This thing'll be a lifesaver if we can get er runnin. We can stop building thatch huts and raise some real structures with this thing! Where did this stuff come from, anyway?"

Looking at the contents of the crate and listening to the builders. I hear a plan. When do you think we could have something like this up and running properly? I assume I am right when I say that the initial build will be cruder and we could rebuild it later with stronger lumber?

Re: Founding Clifftown
2 of the farmers with experience in such things look over the metal parts from the crate.
"Ye gots all the movin parts already. We'd just need to build up the frame otta some strong limbs er other chunks a wood."
Another man starts measuring up how long the legs of the cutting table need to be.
"This thing'll be sweet if she werks. We'll be able ta get a lot more from each tree by cutting out linear pieces."
The men agree that the mill could be set up just about anywhere temporarily, then moved to a more permanent spot once more area is cleared. The rest of the crew continues to chop and clear, making good progress on all fronts.

The Princess
"Excellent! Let's start with the lizards as power, maybe we can get it running well enough to make a water wheel for easier use." She smiles and thanks the builders for their expertise.
"It was shipped here a couple of weeks ago, I think. For a Mr. Monocar. Nallissa and I reasoned that the town could put it to use until the owner returns. I've taken responsibility for it until then."
She takes a look at the harnesses and moves to find a tailor to see if she can get them altered for her lizard friends.

Re: Founding Clifftown
Liam slaps the side of the box with a smile. I hear nothing but solutions. Lets set up over there so we are near the river for later and can easily water the Zillas as well. That will also have us starting off closer to where the timbre is still standing for later. I have a whetstone for sharpening the blade as well. How many men do you need? I will allocate them over to you.
Turning the to Princess. That will be a big improvement. Things are moving nicely here. Hopefully we will have some real lumber soon.
What are your immediate plans?
