Budo:
1 escaped unwounded.
1 slain by Ha.
1 wounded by Eiji and Toshizo, slain by Ha.
1 wounded by Toshizo, slain by Ha.
1 slain by Ha.
1 wounded by Souta, slain by Toshizo.

0.5 Budo for wounding, 1 Budo for slaying.

Ha - 4 Budo
Toshizo - 2 Budo
Souta - 0.5 Budo

Taka:
.1 Shugendo casting Mud
.2 Shugendo casting Mirror of Deception
(Edit: I'm also allowing the duel rounds as 'successful castings' even though they aren't named spells. It's a lesser award than winning.)
.3 Shugendo for each successful Duel Casting (x3= 0.9)

Eiji: will get more from Magical Healing or Blessings soon when dawn comes

New Totals:
Toshizo 3 + 2 = 5
Ha 6.5 + 4 = 10.5
Souta (new) + 0.5 = 0.5

Taka .3 this scene, 3 before = 3.3 + .3 = 3.6 +0.9 = 4.5
Eiji 3

So, yes, Ha is now level 2.

Souta weakly makes her way to the edge of the building and sits down, leaning against the opening. She tries to sleep but her wounds send sharp pains through her abdomen as she rests there with her eyes closed. She isn't sure how much she will be able to sleep but knows she needs to try.

Phase 9: Toshizo (Basic Action)
Phase 6: Eiji (Basic Action); Souta (Secondary Action)

Phase 4: Toshizo (Secondary Action)
Phase 3: Souta (Secondary Action)
Phase 2: Taka (Basic Action)

Ha and Toshizo join Eiji and Souta at the unconscious body of Taka near the fire. "I think we should all stay away from the cave and rest in the house tonight. Now two of us very much need rest and healing. I will stand watch and keep the fire going, all night if needed. Eiji, I'm sorry to impolitely ask so directly, but will you be able to heal Taka-san and Souta-san tomorrow? The way you did for Ha and me today?" The young bushi's brow is furrowed with concern for the generous samurai lady magician, who lies on the dirt unconscious. And for Souta-san and the group as a whole. Then he remembers his formerly samurai mother's and father's lessons, and his face goes to unreadable and feigned impassive.

Ha adds, "the Bakemono seem to desire the bodies of the dead. Should we burn them?"
Toshizo responds, "Perhaps we should burn only Soji's body. The robbers worked for the hag, so she can be responsible for their bodies. It's cruel, I know. But I think we need to save our strength for fighting the hag and her servants." Then a thought occurs to him. "Eiji, if we don't burn the bodies, could the robbers become yurei that we have to fight?"

Eiji confirms that he will be restored by the Buddha with his meditation at the rising sun and then will be able to aid others with the Buddha's blessings. He also confirms that he conducted the Segaki Burial Rites upon the corpses and they shall not rise as yurei for a few months, allowing time to burn them later as the fires must be quite hot and the labor to do so is formidable with the Bushi chopping many trees if they wish to ensure it is done. Otherwise, word can be given to the local townsfolk who can see to those matters, or who may let them turn to ghosts.

Toshizo prepares to take the first watch of the night. He sits outside the house behind the fire, but not directly behind so that it obscures his vision toward the cave. He shows the group his one humming bulb arrow and explains to Eiji, "If I shoot this, it will make a loud, sharp whistling sound. If you hear that, it means the monsters are out of the cave and are a danger to us. Everyone must wake up and be ready to fight, of course."

Eiji helps Souta through the wide doorway onto the rush mats of the bloody floor, then moves Taka's body the same. Ensuring both rest comfortably on the cleanest blankets and floor coverings, Eiji then lies down and rests himself. Jiva curls up beside him and quickly he is snoring peacefully. Souta tries to sleep but her wounds send sharp pains through her abdomen as she rests there with her eyes closed. She isn't sure how much she will be able to sleep but knows she needs to try. Taka shows no reaction as she is moved and lies like one dead, her shallow breathing barely perceptible, her body otherwise unwounded. Her fine kimono still shows barely any sign of soil or wear.

Toshizo goes into the house and hauls out more wooden pieces for the fire. Then sits, props his quiver on his thigh, and arranges his 24 arrows - more bowel-rakers refilled from the stores of the bandits in the house. Then he stands again. Back in Shinano, his ronin father was right now standing guarding a warehouse. His son wouldn't be so lazy as to sit while on guard for bakemono, with Taka unconscious and Souta barely alive.

Hours pass as Toshizo stands watch, careful training keeping him from waivering as midnight stretches to the witching hour. He now knows to watch the location of the cave mouth, and while the flickering on the cliffside beyond the firelight's reach still causes worrying shadows, he is also clear that he sees at least some real movement - bakemono-sho who crouch, watching in return, eyes glinting in the darkness, then dissappear again within.

Ha takes the last shift, letting Toshizo rest for the few hours just before dawn, confirming he too thinks he sees the bakemono-sho, a stand-off in the night. When the morning comes and Eiji is woken to greet the sun's rays, the Bushi confirm that the three corpses dragged from the grave are gone, no longer laying where they were dropped on the grasses. Though they watched all night, they do not know if the corpses walked off on their own or were retrieved by bakemono-sho hands.

Water is heated and rice made for breakfast, seasoned with preserved meat and dried spices destined for the war camp. The party needs to clean a pot for use, of course, as everything in the kitchen was left unkempt by the bandits.
This is they key moment for action by Eiji the Gakusho. He gets his 28 Power Points restored with his morning prayers at dawn.
  • He can perform a Ki action to enhance his future actions, he needs to roll d20s until he gets a 1, but we're not time limited so he can do that. The only one relevant to this situation is Power Reservoir, which will increase his Power points from 28 to 29 (because he only has 1 Ki, that's the maximum).
  • He can enter a Trance for 9 Power (10-level) and roll for one Prophecy (Karma-Yoga) useable in the coming day and one piece of Secret Knowledge (Raja-yoga) while in the trance. BCS to enter a trance is (Magic+Meditation/2) BCS 7. Successful use of either Yoga is BCS 3.
  • He can attempt to heal the wounded, paying 1 Power for each roll and if successful healing 1d6. (BCS is 9 minus the amount of lethal damage the subject has/10. So BCS 7 for Souta and Ha, BCS 9 for Toshizo, and Taka can't be healed.)
He can cast Blessings upon himself or his teammates. This requires a BCS 9 roll and and each attempt costs 2 Power Points. Success allows the recipient to either add +2 to BCS rolls (Karma Yoga) or to gain 18% bonus hit points above their current total (Raja-Yoga). Either blessing lasts 1d3 turns, rolled when activated.

I think he gains Shugendo as follows:
  • .1 Shugendo per successful healing roll with a minimum of 1 Shugendo for the scene.
  • 1 Shugendo for gaining useful information from a Trance.
  • .2 Shugendo for each Blessing successfuly cast.

After Eiji makes his decisions regarding his power points and has his scene, then the rest of you can plan your action for the day. :)

I will take me a bit of time, possibly until tomorrow evening to go through all that and decide...

Some of those BCS should be +1 for level, I'll have to verify which ones... The BCS 3 for yogas I'm pretty sure get the +1 (Gakusho bonus skill).

Please double-check me (so we all review the rules!) but I think that should be accounted for in each. The Yogas are based on his Wits 18, which I counted as 2 +1 for level = 3. Now that I'm writing it out, I realize that with /5 and not /10, that's 3 +1 = 4, so you're right. Lots of magic stuff is /10, so I got myself mixed-up.

Ah, there's the difference. I need to make sure the +1 is accounted for in the character sheet...

It would be nice if someone could revise the character spread sheet, there's some confusing bits in it, and then we all transfer our characters to the revised sheet so they all work the same...

I am constantly revising sheets, and glad to help with that when I have time. The big problem is that much of the sheets are class-specific, so we need to standardize for Bushi/Shugenja/Gakusho. I've cleaned up the Bushi sheets a lot (the best new template is Souta's) but I haven't done the same for Gakusho. I also am having less time - if will probably take an hour or two so might take a week or so to get to it, but I'm glad to overhaul a Gakusho sheet and move both Eiji and Taisho into it if you ask.

I need to transfer Toshizo to the improved sheet.

In the Health attribute section it says Healing Rate is always at least 1. That's after applying these modifiers. In the Healing section (1095.2) it says that a negative result is treated as 0. In other words, the character doesn't lose HP because of a negative healing rate for the day.

Example Healing Rate calculation. Divide Health by 5. Toshizo's is 20, so 20/5 = Healing Rate 4. He fought yesterday so -6 - level equals -5. He traveled yesterday, so that's another minus, depending on how much BMA was used. So Toshizo is Healing Rate is a negative number. But he gets the minimum of 1 HP back. Does that sound right?

Modifications for the “day before” are as follows:
Day spent at rest (no activity at all):
In the open +O
In crude shelter (camp, tent) +1
In comfort (inn, house) +2
In luxury (best inns, fine home, good food) +3
If character fought that day: -(6-Level)
If character travelled that day:
Less than half BMA -2
Over half BMA -4
Over normal BMA -6

On horseback Increase penalty by 50%
In Kaga (sedan chair) Increase penalty by 75%
In litter Halve penalty.

If character is Studying or performing Research:
Modifiers based on care given at the time of healing include:
Attended by character making successful
BCS in Physician Skill (Igaku): +1
Use 1 medical kit “Unit” (1 per day maximum): +1
Use Healing Drug: +1 or

I figured it wasn't in play until you are resting.

Your calculated healing rate (from Health) has a minimumof 1. Adjusted by environmentalfactors is covered by 1095.2b Applying The Healing Rate and negative numbers are treated as zero.

So, technically it applies at dawn, but unless you have a really high healing rate, it's not relevant until you spend a day resting and not fighting.

It is dawn to dawn - you were at the watchtower at yesterday dawn, so I wasn't counting you as traveled after.

The afternoon naps help logically (I was going to begin applying -1 BCS for being up more than 24 hours straight) but not for Healing Rate which looks for full days of rest.

Ah, you're right. I misread it. The minimum healing rate is 1. That doesn't mean a char heals by at least 1 HP each dawn. The minimum heal is 0 HP.

During the long minutes and hours of his watch, Toshizo looks at the black opening of the cave's entrance. It's a place where bakemono come out of, dig up headless bodies, and try to run back to again. A black hole in the side of a mountain where bakemono live. Would it be any more lit in the morning? Or at midday? It only made sense that it wouldn't, not beyond more that the first few yards inside the cave's mouth. He wondered if the hag and the bakemono-sho and the hag could see in the dark, like cats and many forest animals. Maybe not, maybe they lit lanterns to illuminate their cave home. He felt the hairs of his rise in quick waves, elbow to wrist. For a moment he was in horror of the dark cave entrance, the supernatural, and the unknown. And then he used his bushi training to calm and steady himself. "It's the same as when sensei says 50 fingertips push-ups today, instead of 30. It's a surprise and you think you can't think you can't do it. But your body can do it.

And with each trembling push-up from the floor the mind gets more alarmed. The body can't do another one. The last three, with the trainees counting all of them out in unison and the voices growing weaker each round of 10, those take the most effort. A few call out, not in unison anymore, more personal panting and grunting now. Ichi. Nii. San... Shi." Sensei seems satisfied by the young bushi lads' performance.
They lie on the rice straw tatami mats for a suspiciously long time.

Yosh! Up! It's time for kenjutsu training! Put on your gear! Olders, help your assigned youngers!

On watch in Hida province and looking at that black bakemono cave hole, a thought occurred to Toshizo. "I wonder what's happening with my friends in sensei's dojo now? Probably not anything much different. Yosh! I'll do my part."

Eiji will start with some healing:

Ha:
fail
fail
fail
success
fail
Ha is healed 2 points

Souta:
fail
fail
fail
success
fail
Souta is healed 3 points

Toshi:
fail
success
Toshi is healed completely (3 points)

That uses 12 power leaving Eiji with 16

He will try one trance:

fail

Leaving him with 7 power

Eiji, thank you for your kindness, Toshizo says. Everyone, I'm sorry, but I have many concerns. I'm concerned about going to the cave to attack the hag and leaving Taka-san behind. She is completely helpless and anything or any person could kill her. I'm also concerned because Souta-san hasn't recovered her health yet. Finally, I am concerned about being able to see in the cave. Perhaps we should rest here for the day and restore our strength. Then Eiji can heal Souta-san more tomorrow. We can spend the day finding lamps if there are any here, or spend it making torches.

If the bakemono come out to attack, we can fight them here, near Taka-san. Or if they come out to steal more bodies, we can kill them one at a time with arrows. So less bakemono to fight in the cave.

But I am also concerned about Taka. We don't know how long she can live like this. Perhaps there is some magic thing endangering her, and quick action is needed. But we don't know what that is. Still, I think if we attack today, Souta-san may be killed. And we would have to leave Taka-san with no bushi to guard her. So I think waiting is the best option, perhaps. What do you all think?
