Eldon searched frantically for some of the hard to find ingredients, but was excited when he was able to find everything needed to make his favorite dessert of all time, Uncle Lou's Prison Pie. As a child, his family would visit Uncle Lou in prison on his birthday. Uncle Lou always asked for this pie and Eldon always scarfed his piece down faster than a greased pig at the fair. Seeing the great competition in the contest, Eldon unfolded a piece of paper and followed the instructions to the letter to make sure he made his best pie yet. Even if he didn't win he was going to enjoy eating this later!

Pie Contest [1d20]=13, Taste [1d10]=10

The instructions on the paper read as follows:
Uncle Lou's Prison Pie

Crust
3 fistfull rough milled wheat flour
3 fistful brown cane sugar
1 pinch cinnamon spice
2 finger scoop of lard

Mix all ingredient in a stone bowl until consistency of wet sand and set aside.

Topping
2 tankard warm goat's milk
5 fistful sugar
1 fistfull shaved chocolate (optional)

Add sugar to milk and mix vigorously until fluffy. This take a long time, buts builds character.

Filling
1 tankard cow's milk
5 fistful sugar
2 hens eggs
1 pinch flour
2 bananas slice

Add sugar to cow's milk and bring to slow boil over low flame.
Stir in eggs and mix constantly until thickens in to sweet golden caramel.

Assembly
Press crust to line greased pie pan
Line crust with sliced bananas
Pour warm caramel mixture over bananas. Should be a good pinky finger thick.
SECRET INGREDIENT: When making one of these for Uncle Lou, place a small lockpick in the caramel filling as you fill the pie. He will thank you later.
Fill rest of pie with whipped milk mixture. Should be a good fist deep.
Place remaining banana slices on top of the whipped milk topping.
For a little extra pizzazz sprinkle shaved chocolate on top of the topping.

These are awesome so far, everyone! But if Vann Hectors meat pie has actual squire leg in it, Sven will pass. It was probably Edbaldwin, eh? He seemed like the spiciest one.

Sven is from a poor farm family and used to love it when only the very last meat scraps remained from a butchered cow. The slightly tainted meat took on an unusual tangy flavor and mixed together with just the right spices, would make for the best curry beef style meat patty. He used to love making his father and brothers his one of a kind Spicy Beef Half Hand Pies. These things were the perfect size gut-bombs to take along out to the far pastures or on a long wagon trip to get supplies. Nice and filling but with plenty of kick to keep you working all day long.

Spicy Beef Half Hand Pies
CRUST
4 cups Hendon's milled flour (plus more for dusting)
2 Tablespoon sugar
½ Tablespoon salt
1/2 - 2- teaspoon turmeric
5 oz. Lard
1- tablespoon apple cider vinegar.
1 cup cold water
5 - ounce un-salted butter

BEEF FILLING
½ medium onion chopped
1 teaspoon granulated garlic
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon curry
1 teaspoon dried thyme
1 teaspoon white pepper
3 green onion chopped
2 tablespoon chopped parsley
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon chili powder
1 pound ground beef
1/4 cup bread crumbs
1/2 scotch bonnet pepper chopped
1- teaspoon chicken bouillon powder

Instructions
Mix together, flour, salt, sugar, turmeric blend well, add the butter, shortening, followed by vinegar and water in small amounts, pulse until combined and dough holds together in a ball.

Place the dough on a well -floured surface. Divide it into 2 and roll it out.
Using a bowl about 4 - 5 " cut out circles by gently pressing on the dough and releasing it, shaping the meat pie dough. Continue cutting out dough until all dough has been cut.

Add 2 tablespoon of oil to a saucepan, followed by onions, garlic, paprika, thyme curry, chili powder, white pepper, and chicken bouillon . Let it simmer for about 2 minutes. Then, add ground meat, bread crumbs and continue cooking for about 10 or more minutes stirring frequently to prevent burning, add about ½ cup of water .
Finally add green onions and parsley, adjust for salt and pepper seasoning. Remove and let it cool. Scoop a heaping tablespoon of filling into each circle, and brush with egg white or white around half of the circle. Fold over twist with fingers gently to seal the edges of the meat pie.

Sir Dewey tries his hand in pie-making.

Not one for the kitchen, he nevertheless decides to get involved in the Helix community and joins in the pagan fun. It's just pies, right St.Ygg? This recipe he learned at the side of an old family friend before he became a knight. He simply calls it:

Gnome pie

The recipe calls for two types of pastry with a beef stew-like filling.

Shortcrust base
Flour, Butter, Salt

Mix well until breadcrumb-like
Add water while mixing until dough-like

"This part is easy, really, even I know how to make shortcrust." Sir Dewey likes to chat while baking. He's borrowed the kitchen of the Brazen Strumpet with the agreement that he will share the recipe and make some extra pies as payment.

Puff pastry lid
Flour, Butter, Salt

Mix as shortcrust, but stop before dough-like, still crumbly
Gently form into a ball, roll out
Fold using book turns, roll, fold again

"This pasty is much harder, if you don't mix it well enough, the butter will leak out and smell lovely, but make it dry. Mama Gronk would always call it juice. 'No spill juice!' She'd yell at us while she made it."

Filling
beef chuck cubed
salt and pepper
olive oil
onion
garlic
flour
beef stock
red wine
tomato paste
bay leaves
Worcestershire sauce

Season beef with salt and pepper, heat, and brown aggressively in a pot over high heat, then remove
Lower heat, and onion and garlic for 3 min, add flour and stir
Slowly add stock while stirring. Once dissolved, add wine tomato paste, bay leaves, and Worcestershire
Return beef, cover, and simmer for 1:45, then remove the cover and simmer for 30 until reduced down to cover the beef
Remove and cool overnight

"You know, this beef looks different than what Mama Gronk would use. Huh. Is this cow?" Sir Dewey shrugs and makes do.

In the morning, Place shortcrust into tins about four inches in diameter, blind bake for 20.

Fill pies, cover with puff pastry, brush with egg wash, and seal.
Cut an incision in the middle
Bake for 30
Eat hot

"There. Not bad. Now how did she put it? 'Come Eat Gnome?' Those small pies sure were tasty. I never could really replicate the earthy taste she put into it though..."

I will judge the Pie Competition over the weekend to give one more day for last minute entries.

"Oink, Oink, Wheeeeeee! Oink.

Around midday, the Greased Pig is released from the market place and all entrants are given an opportunity to chase down the piggy and wrangle it to the ground. The pig has been oiled with goose fat and grease to make it extra slippery.

Competition Rules:

Players chase down the pig, using a 3d6 skill roll vs their constitution score. If successful, they get a chance to wrestle the 🐷. Roll vs your Dex a 5d6. If successful, you roll again but with a decreasing skill check, roll 4d6 vs Dex. If successful then a third grapple 3d6 vs Dex.

At any time you fail, the pig has greased up and slipped away and you need to repeat the constitution check to catch the pig and repeat the last failed Dex grapple tests but at the last skill check level.

so entrants: roll me the first Constitution roll to keep pace with the pig and your first 'takedown ' wrestle vs Dex.

I have 50+ villagers chasing too and will whittle them down as failed Constitution rolls knocks them out of the chasing pack.

All entrants get 25xp and bonus XP for each successful skill check.

What have your got to lose except your dignity? Get down and dirty and squeal like a 🐷.

I expect competitors will need several rolls before the winner is announced.

Cadeweed's first attempt, he chases down the greased pig, but then is not able to secure the first grappling move and the pig squirts out.

Eldon bolts after the pig, dodging in between the other competitors and between the legs of the taller ones. The halfling catches up with the pig and jumps on top of its back. It quickly starts to dash away, but Eldon snatches it by the foot at the last second.

Gerdal prticipates as a bystander along with a few of her friends from the Pheasant, momentarily pausing the peddling of her baked honeybuns.

"Is that man going to...oh. I mean now will he...? Okay...that's...."

After a while she gets drawn into it though.

"Come on Isvand keep that hold! Grab the tail!!"

Sigrid tries to think of an appropriate pie and finally settles upon one.

Barbarian Blue Moon Pie - As the moon has its cycles so to does each creature's life.

Ingredients:
For the crust:
Take 2 cups of flour
1 pinch of salt
2/3 cup of solid coconut oil
6 tablespoons of frozen ice water
For the filling:
3 cups of fresh frozen blueberries
1/4 cup of organic cane sugar
1 tablespoon of cornstarch
a pinch of cinnamon and a pinch of salt
1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice
For the wash:
Full-fat coconut milk (Vegan version)

CRUST: Combine flour and salt in a large mixing bowl. Cut in coconut oil with a pastry blender or a fork until mixture resembles wet sand.
Add ice water 1 tbsp at a time until a shaggy dough forms.
Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and press into a ball. Reserve about ⅓ of the dough for the top design.
Roll the ⅔ portion into a round shape approximately ¼" thick. Transfer the dough into an 8" cake pan (line the bottom with parchment paper just to be safe) and flute the edges, ensuring that the dough sits over the edge of the pan to prevent it from shrinking during the blind bake.
Prick the bottom of the crust using a fork. Chill bottom crust for about 10 minutes in the fridge before baking.
Blind bake at 400°F for 15-20 minutes or until lightly golden brown. Cool for at least 10 minutes before filling.
Roll out the reserved ⅓ portion of dough into a round shape, again, approximately ¼" thick. Cut a half circle and use 2 small circular cookie cutters, one larger one smaller (or bottle caps in my case) and a small star-shaped cutter to create the lunar cycle design. Keep the top crust pieces chilled.
FILLING: Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl. Transfer filling into blind baked crust, pressing down to compact the berries.
Lay the top crust pieces on top of the berries, ensuring to seal the edge with the baked crust. Brush crust pieces with wash of choice (coconut milk or egg) and bake at 400°F for 20 minutes then lower the temperature to 350°F and continue to bake for an additional 25-30 minutes.
Allow the pie to cool and set for at least 3 hours, best overnight, before slicing.

Vann Hector

More in need of XP than in need of pork, he nevertheless joins in the Greased Piggy chase through the village, hoping to team up with the miller's sons and win a hog roast.

He catches the piggy, grabbing a trotter and snout but alas, his potential pork sausages slips through his fingers.

Sir Dewey

The Knight declines to roll in the mud with the greased pig, but cheers on all participants. He consoles the villagers who fail and helps all to their feet. He roots extra hard for those who manage to grab the pig, but fail to hold on. "Ooh! So close, you'll get it next time. Put some dirt on your hands to help!"

"Such a fun event. At least for those watching. It's good for the villagers to have things like this to look forward to, even if it is probably beneath some of us." He chats with some of the other adventurers who aren't participating.

Dalin does not participate in the wrangling of pigs he merely watches and cheers others on from the sidelines.

It takes the boy mage Sven a bit of time to catch up to the pink porker with all the people chasing along, but he is finally able to grab ahold of the curly tail.

Con Check (15) [3d6]=15

And his strong fingers are somehow able to hold the pig momentarily as he wonders what the hells to do with it next.
Very Hard Ability Check [5d6]=14 (vs. 15)

Unable to do anything to subdue the slippery animal magically, the mage continues to hold on for dear life, still unsure what he is actually doing wrestling a damn pig.

Hard Dex Check (15) [4d6]=11

Starting to get a little cocky by his success. “This really isn’t that hard for a farm boy who basically grew up with pigs as his only friends.”

Normal Dex Check (15) [3d6]=9 8-)

“Anyone want some sausage?”

Oops! I did all my rolls in one post. I hope that isnt grounds for disqualification.

no. I will keep the rolls but give each competitor the same chance. So after all the entrants post, I will update 1st round results and then eliminate folk and proceed with the next rolls. There might be a tie and in that case, another piggy showdown as you pull a trotter each.

while other contestants roll sleeves up to wrestle pigs and each other or compete in games, the judges have been out tasting wares and pigging out themselves in the delicious pastry offerings made for the festival.

Mayday Pie Competition.

The Silver Platter has been awarded, all entrants gain a token 'Bronze Spoon'. Of the many village entrants, Pernicious peddled a traditional '24 - blackbirds, baked in a pie', a great dish for common folk. The Brazen Strumpet offered several 'Tarts with a Heart', lovely jammy offerings in the shape of pertly nippled boobs. Sister Cella cooked a delicious 'Pilgrims Feast' which won much approval except from his senior clerics who despise the Angarach traditional as outdated and pseudo-pagan. From the forge fires came a huge folded crusty pizza type offering of creamy blue cheeses and gammon with sprigs of chives, pepperoni and roasted mushrooms.

The judges added their own critiques (I randomly rolled a d6 for ingredients and d4 for the pictures) and Maddie decided to get in in the act and decide what she like best awarding her own Chef's Special out of 10.

Everyone gets 25xp. (Dalin & Cadeweed)

The top five gain further xp equal to their final points tally.

Vann Hector: great pic and wonderfully presented, fell down on your on Tastometer roll to gain 5th place on 38 points.

Sven: gained shared 3rd place on 43 points. Scoring 9 from my totally independent co-judge. The ingredients and pic judged by the local guilds only amassed 6 points disappointingly I thought it a sure fire hit.

Gerdal: shared joint 3rd place with her meat free offering that suggested 'you get the meat for dessert later'. Maddie decided the crusty numbers and blood leaking tomb stamp scored her lowest. Just no pleasing some people. (She also said, "No I am not cooking you that in case you get ideas").

We had some controversy for the winning dish. Sir Dewey bringing a surprising feast not fast to the table with superior cooking skill and Tastometer readings, Maddie approved 10/10 and then you seem to have got totally shafted by the Herne committee who judge the gnome pie with the lowest mark. (My fault I scored 1+1 on the d6 and d4 rolls). It seems the Ygg paladin might not be to everyone's taste despite his Gnome pies almost wiping the floor. He is adjudged 2nd on 44 points.

The winner by the slender margin of a single point and a single slice is Eldon who offered a meat free and file free 'Prison Pie', which gave those behind bars a taste of freedom and home. While his own ingredients and cooking wisdom might have lagged, the judges both gave him their highest scores of 10 which means he carried the day and the 1st Prize of the Silver dish with 45 points. Sarge gets to lick all the crumbs up.

Thank you for the entries: I will jot down final combined total XP rewards and prizes for each character when the Festival closes.
