Luther

Seeing Grimm take another dip to cleanse himself, Luther does the same. I wonder if there are any fish in this hole? And how hard they'd be to catch?

You've got a good point, Liam.

The Now Thrice Explored Hag Cave
Around Noonish

Luther sees trinkets resting on rock ledges on the other side of the chamber, but decides not to try climbing over the bloated mass for a closer look. He hops into the water to join Grimm for a bath instead, looking around under the surface and seeing several fish constantly nibbling on all the tiny chunks of dead flesh suspended in the water.

Liam worries that they won’t get this area cleared in time for the townies to use as shelter for the night, asking if the rotting carcass could be dealt with by magical means instead of using manual labor and brute force.

Wake suggests a torch could be used to see if the remains are flammable, but the idea is quickly dismissed. His rope is called for once again after the Princess invites the group up through the small hole in the ceiling of the water chamber. Once it is secured, after a few tries, she ties it off and awaits the first climber, reminding those below about the adjoined areas underwater. ([4d6] STR checks to successfully climb straight up a suspended rope)

Luther
ST 14 [4d6]=13

Luther makes an attempt at the climb. Failing, he hunkers down, gripping the bottom of the rope to try and make it easier for the others.

Rolling under an Ability Check is a success. I know, it goes against everything else in 1st Ed

Rolling under your ability score is exactly how ability checks are done in normal game play, (using a D20) we just use d6's in this game to set the difficulty level.

I cant figure out why this is so difficult to grasp.

If your ability score is high, it would be easier to succeed, right?

In fact....a character with an ability score of 18+ cant fail a normal [3d6] roll.

So where is the confusion of needing to roll over the desired score to succeed coming from?

You are always trying to roll your ability score or less on ability checks.

Sorry, I just meant about needing to roll high to hit something, or to make a saving throw. When you suddenly roll under a number, you assume you've failed. To Hits and Saves usually occur more often than ability checks.

I've got a handle on it. I was just trying to point out that Luther had made it up the rope, so Urson could re-write his post and Luther could frolic and gambol with carefree abandon on the clifftop :D

Wes

Wes knows that his faith in Obad Hai is much stronger than his arms. He waits for one or two of his companions to make it up before him, so they can pull him up after them.

I assumed you knew how it worked, since you corrected Urson.

Wow, so the underscore before the rolled dice combination breaks down each individual die roll. NEAT! (I did not know that)

Chauncey considers the stinking mass, then raises a finger to make some self-aggrandizing pronouncement about the efficacy of magic, when Liam jumps in with his unsolicited "magical advice," effectively stealing his thunder.

He side-eyes the man, then says rather testily "Any other suggestions, sir? Perhaps I could simply Disincorporate the mass or instantly Transport it to another realm of existence?" He folds his arms and pouts for a beat, then continues. "...It so happens I have prepared just the thing."

Stepping to a new vantage point, he performs a few odd hand-gestures, then squints while aligning a bit of the remains visually between his thumb and index finger and squeezing them together.

"I crush you." he says.

Thrice Explored Hag Cave
Around Noonish

Chauncey looks at Liam with some disdain before telling the man that he has already prepared for exactly this situation. He uses his reversed magic spell to reduce the size of the bloated mass, causing it to magically shrink temporarily to almost half of its original size. Some of the tentacles slide back across the floor, retreating from the entryway and moving closer to the barred cage hatch in the floor of the chamber. The mess and stink is still very prevalent, but the mass of rotting flesh should be much easier to deal with at this smaller size.

Ignoring the spectacularly adequate display of magic from the groups mage, Luther and Wake scramble up the rope to the area above the cave where the Princess awaits. Wes looks at his biceps and decides to pause for a moment in case he needs to be pulled up. Grimm tries climbing the rope next, nearly falling on his butt to the rocky ground. Moving back to the wall, he begins to climb up to the hole in the ceiling instead.

Once they reach the top of the cliff cave, the climbers are rewarded with an enticing view of the surrounding area and the line of dark cliffs that stretch beyond view to the east.

Wake

"Nice one Chauncey, is that a permanent change or are we on the clock before it grows back?" Wake calls back down into the cave.

Of course I can read the PH, but Wake cannot. :D

I can't seem to keep the saves vs ability checks straight these days. Sorry.
Luther grabs the rope at the TOP, steadying it. Anybody who needs help, just yell. I'll pull.

The Princess

She welcomes those lucky enough to make the climb and motions an arm across the view. "Now that's a proper vista. A majestic sweeping expanse, beckoning for exploration."

"But it looks like Chauncey has done some tricks below. That thing is much more manageable now." She looks at her clean outfit and at Wake and Luther. "For others, of course."

Wes

Wes takes the end of the rope and ties it into a loop. He sticks a foot into the loop and grabs tightly onto the rope. "Haul up if you please!" he calls out to the folk at the top.

Grimm focuses on climbing up to the hole. No way he's gonna do anything close to that putrid thing, big or small.

He will help pull up Wes it he gets up there before him.

Chauncey is smugly proud of his accomplishment. His air seems to say "Please, it was really no big deal."

"Astute question, Wake. Alas, the effect is not permanent. We have somewhat less than an hour to effect the removal of the entity, before it spontaneously reverts to its previous mass and girth. I propose we 'hop to it,' as it were," he says, "Though I do not believe merely pushing it back into its hole is an acceptable solution, if this cave is ever to be rendered habitable. It would simply rot down there. No, we must somehow pull it bodily from this space and deposit it somewhere more acceptable. Perhaps we can simply cast it from the cliffs into the ocean east of here."
OM, it's not completely clear from the wording of the spell whether or not I can cast Reduce on it again for an even further reduction (seems like a DM call). The mass has been reduced by 40% so far, but I suspect it's not small enough yet to lift and carry out of here - though I suppose there's always Levitate... 8-) :)

Thrice Explored Hag Cave
Around Noonish

After shrinking the horrid pile of rot, Chauncey is pleased with his results, but shrugs off any praise from the others. Never actually trying the spell twice in a row before, the mage wonders if it would work again to shrink it further, but will have to try it out himself to learn for certain. When he looks around for a helping hand to move the carcass, Chauncey realizes that he has been left behind with only Liam in the chamber, since everyone else has either climbed or been pulled up through the tight hole in the chambers ceiling.

Princess, Luther, Wes, Wake, and Grimm look around at the top of the cave, glad to breath the fresh sea air instead of the putrid stink below, and I am not referring to Chauncey. They see a massive cliff wall that rises another 70 feet or so in elevation that leads to the north, and the beautiful cliff shoreline that stretches as far as they can see to the east.

Poor Sir Narramore, still guarding the outside beach cave entrance all alone, spots Marge and 2 other men heading towards him, and she has one of those looks on her chubby red face. She gives the paladin an earful once she arrives at the cave mouth. "What the hells is this? Why's the biggest, strongest mountain of a man I ever seen justa standing here with his sword up his butt? If all yer gonna to do is stand around, why the hells didja come out here in the first place? And what is that stink? Damn, that is terrible. And where's the other lazy curs who came with ya? Taking a nap in there while the resta us work our fingers ta the bone? I thought ya was coming here ta clear out a place for the workers ta sleep out the night? Is the cave cleared? It sure don't smell like it ta me! Let me guess.....you found something shiny in there and everyone got distracted on what they was doing here in the first place? I swear every adventurer I ever met is exactly the same. The all say they want ta help, but forget about everything they said once they see a stray copper piece."

"Step aside ya big brute, so I can get in there to address the situation myself. If we cant stay here, we will need to focus our work on getting something built ta sleep inside overnight. Ya know this place was already searched a few times, right? What could be in there that is taking so long ta deal with?"
The large and in charge women heads for the cave opening with a very angry and determined look on her face.
