The Brazen Strumpet Tavern

Osen greets you, appreciative of the tankard of mead.

"Well, well. A 'little half man' and 'a man and a half' want work do they? Certainly by the way these powder puff pastries keep falling away, I am going to be short handed.

Rapscallions! Oh no. We don't want those, I run a serious business."
(cue some laughter and guffaws from those at the table).

"And my business is the village business. You know, helping all these entrepreneurs and adventurers make it day to day. Keep the wolf from the door and provide some security.

References. Yes, good idea though oftentimes not worth the paper written on. Character and fortitude and ability to take orders. Have those do you? Well, some of my regular Boyz are already assigned but I could fit you on some day jobs. But I usually set a test before I take on folk. Want to make sure that they are up to the task. A trail run."

You notice the half-orc wrestler smile laconically at the suggestion put to you.

Rapp listens to Osen intently, gauging the man. Deciding he likes him, he will reply.

"I've always let my actions speak for me, sir. I was born and raised here and I take a personal interest in the safety of my town."

Pausing and looking the half-orc right in the eye, unafraid and possibly foolish he adds.

"We are both good people, sir. Test us all you wish. Obviously we need the work but we take the safety of Helix seriously as I've said.. If you think making

me or my friend fight your muscle for a "test"
he points at the half-orc wrestler, "So be it. Being a good fighter is not the only way to judge a man.

I've a good moral compass as well. Doesn't seem like he feels we would succeed."

Osen laughs, as does 'GBH'.

'Grievous Bodily Harm', he don't spar with young pretenders, contenders maybe. But we'll have to judge that first. Still you have some lead in your pencil. No, we got another racket."

He gestures to you to bring Knatchbull over and with a stare, some of the 'likely lads' move off the table to make room.

Bresnan's Farm. Due northeast on the outskirts. He's been trying to get his finger in the pie of providing militia to 'His Lordship', but then that makes my pie a smaller portion. And me and my Boyz, we want to stay eating good.

Now he knows my regular Boyz so no chance of snooping up close and personal to him, but a couple of young guys needing work. He will set you ploughing for sure, then while it is quiet, I want you to get into his barn and bring me his designs. You will know which one's they are when you see them. Then put the barn out of action."

He talks, giving space for some questions and comments.

Fapp ponders Osen's "offer" of work.

Looking straight at him, he is dead serious as he speaks. "Let me get this straight. You want the both of us to steal, then burn down their barn. I

was very specific in my comments about rapscallians. I will not steal or commit arson. We are looking for fighter or guard work. If you can help us... that would be

grand. But if you can not, I kindly thank you for your offer but must refuse. I won't sink to the same level as my sisters or parents, Master Osen. I have my principles and

stand by them."

Done talking, he awaits a response from the man. Looking at "GBH" he nods and adds "I mean no disrespect whatsoever, sir but I stand by what I believe."

Knatchbull

Knatchbull eats every last morsel of food set down in front of him-and not in a graceful fashion but he also keeps his eyes on his friend at Osen's table. It seems to be going OK he thinks to himself but now he also sees some of Osen's crew are moving around. Knatchbull wipes his mouth with his sleeve and narrows his focus on Fapp.

"And good for you young man. Principals will get you far. So, you want to work for me ... but not with me.

These Boyz here. I am like a father to them. Most were deadbeat scum, fresh from the penal colony, cutthroats and brigands. I am trying to teach them discipline, order, civility. Mould their characters into respectable citizens. Give them a second chance when life itself never gave them a first.

I hope to turn them from cadets into troopers, emblazoned in uniform and parading under the Duke's banner. For now most are just 'men-at-arms' but if we prove our worth, we could be adopted as the 1st Regiment of Helix.

But this Bresnan conspires with that black-tongued advisor of Krothos and seeks to usurp my noble aims with his own. He parlays with the forest tribes to broker an allegiance that would bring hobgoblins and dog-soldiers upon our threshold. I will not allow this, after decades of border warfare to simply allow these aberrations to occupy the gate-keep and lay tolls on the trade routes in exchange for peace. "

Osen gives a little background to his animosity with the rancher.

Knatchbull

Knatchbull sees the look from Fapp and nods back to his friend in acknowledgement. That look usually means bad news. He resists the urge to move too quickly to his friend's side and walks over with a measured confidence, head slightly lowered.

When he gets to the table he puts his hand on Fapp's shoulder and gives it a slight squeeze and then nods at Osen.

Evening sir. Nice to make your acquaintance. Room for one more at the table?

Fapp

Once Knatchbull arrives, he will ask Osen "Can you repeat for Knatchbull's benefit what you asked me and what you've told me?

Knatchbull knows me well enough to realize I feel uncomfortable committing arson or even stealing and why."

Once Osen has repeated what he has told Fapp, the halfling will ask Knatchbull .

"What do ya think, big guy? Be honest about it. You know I won't judge you." He says with aa reassuring smile and wink.

I'll be honest, I don't really ken the connection between the barn burning and stopping this alliance between Bresnan and the outsiders. Sounds like a lot of extra work. If you want to keep the alliance from happening we should focus on that. Create distrust between the hobgoblins and Bresnan. I'd be OK thinning their numbers-maybe make it look like Bresnan is betraying them? I don't know-what do you think, Fapp?

Osen looks at the pair and leans over the table a little to talk in more hushed whispers.

"It is not just forging allegiances with a mercenary tribe. Heaven knows, I might be just as guilty of that with such a crew of vagabonds and mischief makers. No, there is something more about this Bresnan and what he plots in secret. I have heard reports of strange noises and hammering. The forge dwarves even report casting strange alloy mixes, melding irons and minerals into ingots for the ranch. To what purpose? A strange weapon? An armoured carriage? And backed up by humanoid brigands.
I have tried to bend Krothos' ear to investigate but without any proof I am regarded as imbecilic as poor Alastar.

So, as couple of lads like yourself may be just what I need. There be gold in it too for you and the use of my yard for training you up in skills.

Now what do you say?"

He actually doesn't give you much time to respond, calling four more ales and suggesting GBH can trounce 'Ox' Knatchbull in the arm wrestling. A folk rowdies gather to wager, tossing coins to the 'accountant' "We'll take 4/6 on for the champ, 3-1 on the 'Bull of Ironguard' "

Fapp listens to Osen and ponders the words of the older man, frowning then sighing.

"I suppose it couldn't hurt to gain some more training, that's for sure. Maybe we could come to some sort of agreement about what you want us to do for you.

Gold is nice, after all.

I think you're right Fapp. Let's take the job and see where it goes. Then under his breath to Fapp We can always change our minds later. Then back out loud again: But before we get started it looks like I have some coin to win right here and now. Which one of you is losing first?

Which one of you is losing first?
Let's prove the challenger is up to the challenge of taking on the village champ. A couple of the likely lads want to test Knatchbull's mettle to warm him up before he takes on GBH.

Knatchbull roll me 2 x 1d100 and I will roll for your opponents, Tamas a beefy farmboy of 16 str and Viktor, a scarfaced mercenary with 17 str.

While the muscle bound half-orc wrestles, Fapp has more quiet words with Osen hoping the challenge and bard entertainment veils his conversations.

Osen, "Whatever you secrete from Bresnan, any trinkets or trove is none of my concern. This is a completely independent transaction and if you are caught I will disavow any knowledge of you both working for me at all. But I like your spirit and I have every confidence in your ability. Get me proof of whatever schemes he plots in the secrecy of his barn. I need that to evidence my suspicions before Krothos' court. My business enterprise is always perceived as lacking legitimacy or patriotism. This could be a great opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to the Crown if I can prove others plot against him.

You bring me proof of my suspicions, whatever you can lay your hands upon, I will reward you both handsomely in gold. If you discover nothing and my fears are priced irrational, I will give you 30gp for your time. A months pay for a few days toil. Ten times that if any proof is validated."

rolls and comments please.

Fapp

Keeping a low, discreet voice, the halfling replies to Osen.

"Gold is nice but not everything, sir. I am not so desperate as to need gold, but my friend over there," he sips his ale slowly "Is. Knatchbull is a

decent fellow. He is in need of gold, so for him I'll entertain you, so to speak. If we find nothing give him 50 gold I'll take 10, but that is between you and myself.

Just make our pouches look the same size."
and grins in a happy fashion.

He looks at his friend and the contenders, smiling. "I'll bet you a gold he wins," He slides a gold coin towards Osen for the friendly wager.

"Once we return with news, information or whatnot, can you find us more respectable work, so to speak? Neither of us will let you down sir."

Clearing his throat, he calls out to Knatchbull "C'mon big guy, you got this!"

The Brazen Strumpet Tavern

Fapp misunderstands the offer of 30gp between the pair, or maybe not. Pushing a gambit to the mercenary guildmaster to make the scout deal a 60gp (split unevenly). Osen is quite used to 'double or quits' and smiles.

roll a 4d6 vs charisma check please to agree the new deal, otherwise the first offer stands.

Osen "I can always find work for reputable men." he says regarding future enterprises.

Knatchbull rolls his sleeve up, rubs his hand in some chalk dust and takes on the 'warm up' acts. I will give you a +5% per point of strength difference and +1% per each 10% stage of exceptional strength

vs Tamas +11%
vs Viktor +6%

Arm wrestle vs Knatchbull. Tamas [1d100]=19 Viktor [1d100]=5

The first is surprisingly difficult. Maybe the ex-butcher is out of practice but eventually after some pushing and exertion, his power and weight overcome the farmboy. Warmed up, the next scarfaced opportunist is easily dismissed as one would bat aside a fly.

Which is good as onlookers wager a few bets with the guilds accountant who checks the coins for authenticity by biting a few.

"Now then lads. No potions, no lotions, no mage handing your opponents scrotum. Take a grip, take the strain, heave" he says as GBH and 'Ox' Knatchbull face off.

Knatchbull give me 5 x d100 rolls. Each will be an opposed roll and the winner of each round will have a penalty or bonus cumulatively credited to the next round.

Osen continues to chat with Fapp who considers the 'double or quits' cash offer. "One more thing. If you work for me, I'll watch your back. In public I may disavow any of your actions if caught and reprimanded but in private, me and the Boyz work as family.

Go to the ranch after tomorrow's Festival. Report back by the end of the week or earlier if you can."

He then looks over to his henchman and gives a nod.

The two beefy hardmen link palms, each gripping the other in vice like hands that could crack open a coconut. The mercenary lieutenant sports some iron bracers on his forearms engraved with 'champ' on which should Knatchbull win the contest, he could rightly claim as his own. The newcomer, slayer of bulls and as broad shouldered as a minotaur presses advantage for the first round gambit, shouldering Grievous and tilting his arm as his elbow pivots. But the experienced pro' dies not give up his title willingly and inches back and slowly but relentlessly wears down Knatchbull. In the end over several close minutes of power and rage, the exertion too much and with a loud thump, his wrists slams the deck.

A roar from the wagering crowd goes up. The bard Bublé begins a rendition of "Another one bites the dust." Knatchbull can nurse his wounds but his pride remains intact. It won't be too long before the young pretender can down the current topdog. He shakes hands with his rival who leans in to whisper,

"You'll need a good reason to get into Bresnan's good books and make it look like you are blackmarked in ours.

Now, punch me in the face and call me a cheating bastard. Don't worry, you'll get fixed up proper."
he says as a 'snap' fractures your wrist bone.

actions for Fapp and Knatchbull. Once you round up here I will open and expedition thread for your adventure.
GBH arm wrestles Knatchbull [1d100]=32 [1d100]=81 [1d100]=99 [1d100]=69 [1d100]=88

The opposed scores added the differences between them to the next round scores until after five rounds when the final showdown happens.

Knatchbull

With adrenaline still pumping, Knatchbull doesn't think long about Grievous' suggestion and makes a slight nod towards his rival and hopes this plan works out for the best.

"STOP PLAYING THAT AWFUL RACKET! Now, I don't mind losing fair and square but what we got here is a bad case of stinking, ugly, cheating, BASTARD!" and Knatchbull takes a wild, swinging strike at Grievous' face.
