The gnolls are quickly dispatched. A thorough search reveals the grand total of 77 ancient copper coins; the largest gnoll holds the most -- a princely sum of 35 cp. Their leather jerkins are crude but functional, their maces better made but of little value to adventurers who have touched diamonds and enchanted blades. Innana is able to determine that both maces and bows are likely of hobgoblin make.

Lanny the elf

Lanny surveys the team for injuries. He checks with Innana to make sure she is ok.

"That was quite the catch you made with your net. Perhaps after our mission at Castle Mistamere is finished, we will all be able to rest and picnic here on Lake Windrush. You will be in charge of the fishing."

Lanny examines the bows, nodding his head at Innana's suggestion about the likely crafters.

"The rumors had stated there was an increase in humanoid activity in this area, so the gnolls may have traded with some hobgoblins. We should be prepared for the possibility that humanoids have infested the castle ruins as well."

Lanny takes one last look at the gnoll leader felled by his arrow. He smiles, then turns to his companions and indicates he is ready to move on.

"Shall we proceed to the castle?"

Rhys the Traveler

Rhys retrieves his pony and returns to the group, ready to proceed to the castle.
Has there been a ruling made on arrow recovery yet? Is it only possible on hits? Or, alternately, only possible on misses? Or... something else? Or not at all? If possible, Rhys would like to recover as many arrows as he can after conflicts have been resolved. I believe he fired two in this one...

Saul pays the gnoll prisoners no more attention after they are captured, he prefers to check Castanha for any injury after making sure his friends are safe.

"Well, that was a first for me. Never thought I'd fight gnolls on horseback. Can't say I much cared for it, putting Castanha in danger like that, but it's better than having those things get reinforcements."

Tratiln helps gather up the coins. "well, lacking any good gear or papers tells us this was probably a chance meeting...a random encounter if you will. I say we continue up to rhe castle and be ready for more humanoids. ".

With that Tratiln will collect his horse and remount and head off with the party again.

Innana looks to her side, and pulls a long furry leaf off a nearby tree and wipes the blood from her sword as she listens to Lanny. " Innana smiles as she re sheaths her sword,"you are a true Romantic. "I think the picnic is a wonderful idea if we could use the gnoll skulls as our drinking goblets." Innana bats her eyes. "As for fishing, I am a vegetarian due to my strict belief on non violence."

Innana passes the gnoll that Lanny shot with his arrow in the eye."Nice shot." Innana looks to Marodin, and Semele, "Thank you for the healing." Innana looks at the mace. "Is someone going to take the mace? That thing can pack a wallop of a punch."

Innana walks over to Bliss, and scratches his neck "What a good boy you were today getting Innana to those nasty gnolls so fast." She mounts Bliss, "I am ready to proceed to the castle when you all are."

"Glad you're a vegetarian, Innana, I just hope some board attacks us, more meat for me."

Lanny the elf

Before leaving the campsite, Lanny removes the arrow from the eye of the gnoll leader. He places that special arrow in his second quiver, alongside his magic arrows and silver arrows. The other two arrows that he fired during this battle were clearly not worth retrieving, the elf thinks to himself.

Rhys: The following is the ruling on arrow retrieval which we have been using (taken from p. 112 of the DD Rulebook):

Arrows: Arrows are the ammunition used by bows. The same arrows are usable in either long or short bows. Arrows are often broken in use. At the end of a combat, a character will only be able to recover half (round down) of the arrows fired during that combat. The rest are either lost or unusable.

It looks like the consensus is to continue to the castle, but I shall wait until morning before I post IC. At this point the castle looks to be one or two miles distant. Is the party going to continue to ride?

Lanny the elf
We will need to find a safe place to stow the mounts before entering the castle, but I'm not sure this is really the best place. I am ok with riding up to the castle first and doing some basic scouting around the perimeter on our mounts before settling on a more or less secure location.

The adventurers leave the gnollish campsite behind and continue on to towards the castle. After a short period of riding the hilly terrain begins to moderate and flatten, until the last half-mile to the castle is undulating grasslands. Beyond the castle lies the shores of lake Windrush.

From this distance Lanny takes out his spyglass and observes the castle. The walls are jagged and full of small holes, and a few large blocks have tumbled to the ground and lay scattered before the walls. A large gateway in the center of the wall facing the party stands empty and the massive wooden doors now lay on the ground before them. One hundred feet or so to the left of the door gapes a largish hole in the wall where the stone has collapsed.

No movement or signs of habitation can be seen from this vantage point.

Tratiln dismounts from his horse, looking towards the ruins. He then pauses, looks around for a moment. "Well, where shall we tie up our mounts? Don't think they will enjoy going into the castle."

Lanny the elf

Lanny lowers his spyglass.

"From this vantage point, it appears there are exterior walls surrounding the castle, likely containing an interior courtyard as most castles do, which would be a logical place to tether the mounts. Out here, I see only grasslands, and I would hesitate to just leave the horses out in the open..."

Lanny looks through the spyglass again.

"The doors of the main gate appear to have collapsed, so we should have no trouble getting in. There is also a gaping hole in the wall to the left of the doors through which we could pass. It might be wise, before getting any closer and before entering the gate, to quickly circle around the perimeter of the castle on our mounts to check for any signs of humanoid activity, and to check the exterior walls for any other entrances or exits."

Rhys the Traveler

"It's too bad your new arcane knowledge doesn't allow you to make several things invisible all at once, Lanny! We could tether the mounts to a tree wherever we wanted and nobody would be the wiser!"

Rhys ponders the elf's idea for a moment before adding, "Thundering around the castle with all of our horses is sure to bring our attention to every single inhabitant, don't you think? Or do you mean we should stay hidden within the trees while doing so?"

Lanny the elf

"An excellent point, Master Rhys. Perhaps we should take this opportunity, before we approach the castle any further, to cast a spell of Invisibility upon a person who shall be our designated scout for this mission. My suggestion would be that this person should be prepared to be a non-combatant, otherwise the spell effect will quickly be broken..."

Lanny looks around for volunteers, and also to see what everyone else thinks of the plan.
My assumption is that there are no trees in the area in which to hide ourselves or our mounts. Remember that attacking or casting a spell breaks the invisibility effect, but that otherwise it is permanent in effect. Hence Lanny's suggestion that the scout be prepared to be a non-combatant for the duration of the mission.

Rhys is ready to earn his keep, if nobody else (Saul?) wants to do it.
But he will certainly let any of the more senior members of the group take the opportunity, if they want. And he is certainly the fastest in the party (unhorsed).
