Ambiance: Sleeping on the Blacktop

Unable to set the truck aright, the five Marshalls decide to walk towards the farmhouse, guns holstered, before they lose the light. The truck creaks as Grim the shadowhound leaps off the chasis, following a few paces behind Shadrach at the rear of the group. Shadrach's servos whine, still activated and ready, keeping an eye on Balygyr and Taavi and letting Han and Emile take the lead.

The perpendicular fencing curves inward here, the 150 yards of sheet metal lining the road between you and the farm. "No doubt this is a trap," comments a deadpan Shadrach. The men trust Han's sharp eye and intuition and begin down the crack paving of the road, Hans and Emile each holding a shovel handle from the back of the truck. Grim pauses to sniff at what might be dried up blood on the blacktop.

Han holds up a hand for a halt. He pokes in front of him gingerly with the shovel and four large wheat cutter blades swing out on arms, spinning violently at shin and thigh height and sweeping across the road. Each time he reaches forward, the blades swipe for a pass and then reload. In a tense and harrowing moment the group determines the timing and passes by during the brief lull, one at a time. It seems a miracle, but no one is hurt.

Next there's a field of sharpened rebar that thrusts up on a pneumatic piston from below, skewering the unwary above like kabob. You're able to weave between them before they retract. Then a conspicuous set of scorches and matching holes in the the opposite sheet metal walls alerts you to embedded laser cannons aimed crosswise, machine-gunning for whatever made it this far on fixed arcs. Crawling low on the ground, you go under them.

Reaching the end of the sheet metal gauntlet, you find some comfort in having the wide open fields on either side of you, the barn and farmhouse now not far ahead. There's a large number of the black mounds here, some older and some new, just behind the barbed wire. It is clear now that they are heavy black ash, but chunks of unburnt material protrude where the ash now washes down in little runnels towards the field. A thick leg bone here, perhaps a cow? On the other side, that's definitely a human jawbone. There, a human skull cloven neatly in half and crumbling from the heat of the fire. "Not sure whose will be done... You can call me a sinner for wondering why," mutters Hans, as if remembering something. Then he shakes his head.

The sun dips lower in the sky. A pair of floodlights click on atop poles at the end of the fencing, shedding bright light on the area and all along the inner barrier of barbed wire that marks the nearest line of fields. You pause to look behind you -- Though only 200 yards lies between you and the truck, the anxiety of the narrow passage between you and it makes it seem much further. "So... what're you going to say when you get on the porch?" asks Shadrach of no one in particular.

They’re obviously friendly and welcoming, so perhaps a simple, “Hi, we’re having car trouble, can you help us out?” will suffice, deadpans Emile.

With his eyes, he communicates “let’s circle round the house and check it out.”

He makes sure his holster is clear and scans for danger.

Hansel Actually, vehicle trouble.... should be believable. I am certain that we are under observation at this point. I've seen more tech in the last 100 yards than I have since I arrived on this planet. You would think our friendly sheriff would have mentioned that, by the way... Anyway, if they have pressure plate vehicle throwers, automatic laser cannon, and all the other goodies we've been through, I am sure that they have remote cameras and we're likely under direct observation as well. I think I will politely knock on the front door. Hansel says all this while smiling and looking around like there is nothing unusual or out of place. He pauses speaking for a moment. Yes, I think that makes the most sense. I guess we're not being shot at now, and since we elected a chief deputy, my proposal is as follows: We'll get a bit closer to the house, basically just inside of accurate pistol slug thrower range. Then I will continue forward alone and hello the house. If they respond, I'll explain who we are. Maybe the badges will impress them, but I get the feeling that they're do-it-yourself types when it comes to the law. In any case, hopefully, we can get a palaver going and the itch in my neck where the crosshairs are will go away. If we DO get talking, we can wing it from there, talking about abducted children, and whatever else makes sense to share. Or we can go hellbent for leather. Whatcha think, boss?

After that huge monologue, Hansel takes a breath and waits to see what the others think. If they are ok with it, he will move forward at a walking pace, but constantly checking notice the house and surrounding area for more surprises. Once he moves ahead of the group, he will hail the house. If anyone answers, he'll try some of that fancy diplomacy of his.

If we shoot, better be prepared to rush the main door FAST and get out of line of sight of the barn. It wouldn't surprise me if they have a tank or APC in there.

Taavi is still rather incredulous that none of them had gotten scythed, impaled, or perforated. Especially his never-been-very-athletic self. And this wasn't even the battle they came to fight. Well, it was their battle now. He couldn't remember which old field marshal said, "The best general isn't the one who makes the best plan. It's the one who makes the fewest mistakes when the plan fails."

Uhn, he grunted is agreement to Hansel's plan. And, the truth is the truth. We do have vehicle trouble, and we came here with good intentions. Perhaps these people have heard of problem of the disappeared children. It seems that they might hear everything about what's going on. Or willfully hear nothing at all. He casts a wary eye at the barn and appraises line of side from it to the house's front door. He casually but not stealthily flicks the safeties off for the 9mm in his shoulder holster and the rifle slung from his shoulder.

Shadrach nods in agreement. "Hard to imagine we're not being watched, assuming there's anyone actually in the house and these aren't just 'leftovers'. Spread out a little; we want to look unthreatening, but I'd rather one grenade not take us all out at once." He runs a nervous hand through his hair. "Though we're pretty much at their mercy right now."

Yes, or one machine gun strafe or laser sweep. He put three paces between himself and the nearest marshals.

Báleygr Gangleri slows his pace a little to lag behind a bit, casually angling off to the side away from the house until he's 5' to 10' away from those in front.

Ambiance: People of the Land

It takes about ten minutes to walk up the remaining road to the barnyard and house. Everyone remains a bit wary and on edge, but nothing else tries to kill you as you do so. The group spreads out, simultaneously disabling safeties and loosening weapons in their holsters and also trying to look unthreatening. Han steps forward, taking point, and stopping 30 meters from the porch. Báleygr quietly falls back to the rear of group, putting him even with Grim the shadowhound, who emits a low, rumbling growl at the erstwhile mechanic. The Barn is even with you, across 50 meters of packed earth to your left. Three large pieces of farm equipment - a tractor with a plow, a combine, and some modified tractor - rest in between the barn and the farmhouse. The sun is muted, storm-clouds still heavy and dark to the west, but the floodlights illuminate the whole area brightly.

"That's far enough," says an aged voice in a steeled, calm tone. You see an elderly man seated inside a wide, open window to the left of the door, the business end of a laser rifle pointed at you. "Didn't you see the sign? It's posted. No Trespassing. Now, you all are trespassing...."

"Well, we're the Marshalls of Greater Kumekhna," opens Han with a winning smile, slowly displaying the tin star on his lapel. "Deputized by the Honorable Lira Bunt, currently holding court back in Prudence, and sent to... apprehend some rather bad folk and remand them for trial." Glancing back at the others and not being shot yet, he continues. "Seems we had some... vehicle trouble."

There is a long pause, then the old man spits out the window. "Well, you ain't zombies, at least. Alright. Come inside. We got good cornbread and hot beef stew and if you survive the night we'll get your truck in the morning." He tips the end of the rifle up and stands, turning the knob and letting the door swing open.

Emile enters the house, taking off his hat in reverence. Thank you kindly, he says. He avails himself of the grub but is polite in doing so, allowing others to partake first.

Once folks are settled in, he will ask, What’s this about zombies? I’ve heard of werewolves round these parts and shadow wolves, but no zombies.

Hansel smiles at the invitation and walks into the house. Thank you most kindly, the beef stew sounds as good as zombies don't! Your hospitality is most welcome and appreciated. We will do our best to repay it. Most of us are pretty new to this "being the law" job, but we aim to do right by it. And not cause any fuss we don't need to cause. Talk, trying to build the reputation of good, honest dealing, trustworthy folk. Hearing Emile ask the obvious question about the zombies, Hansel will be quiet and pay attention to the answer, while unobtrusively checking out the interior of the house. Notice, for anything that seems out of place in a fortified farmhouse that fears zombies

Taavi sighs in relief. "All of that, and a reasonable, hospitable person in the end." He puts the safeties back on his firearms. Thank you much for your hospitality, sir. I'll speak frankly about why we intruded on your privacy. There are children missing in Windfall. The people of the town accuse a group called the Sons of Vukodlak of causing their disappearance. We're traveling to investigate that. And if the children are still alive, to try to secure their release and return them to their families. Your ranch was on our route, so we wished to ask the residents or resident if they might have and helpful information.

Taavi also tries to persuade the old man of the group's good intentions and perhaps recruit him (with his nice equipment) as an ally.

The group approaches the porch politely, removing hats and offing courtesy. As Shadrach approaches, the man tips the gun at Grimm. "I don't know what you're playin' at, but that thing's not coming in here."

A female voice chides from inside the house, "They're all scared enough of you, Dad. No more nonsense and come set down. At least let us feed the handsome men first."

Inside a blonde woman, perhaps late 20s or early 30s, puts up her rifle and smiles warmly as she ties on an apron to begin ladling food off an electric stove into serving dishes. "That there cranky specimen is Mr. Richard Whighte, proprietor of this ranch. I'm Nora, and my boy is Oliver."

Báleygr Gangleri trails in after the others and nods politely to the elderly man. Looking around he says, "Hope you have help with all the work."
"Nope, well, it's just us, but we do alright," pipes in a young boy who emerges from the next room as soon as names are announced. "Course, we couldn't do it without the tractors, and it's hard with them breaking stuff, and-" the boy cuts off abruptly as the old man clears his throat and instead scurries over to set more plates and silverware to the table, unloading them from the steaming dish sanitizer.

Han unobtrusively observes the interior of the house. The front door opens directly into this large eat-in kitchen, with a thick, polished wooden table at least 12 feet with matching benches along its long sides and two straight-backed wooden chairs on each narrow end. The far end of the kitchen has glossy white cabinets and dark stone countertops, a built-in refrigerator, several cookers, and other appliances - a modest array before the Fall but now luxurious. Through a doorway just to the right of the front door is a sitting room where classical music plays quietly, barely discernable amidst the din of the kitchen, several stuffed chairs sitting amongst tall floor lamps, shelves of real paper books against two walls. A stair in the middle of the right wall leads upward, and you assume the door next to it is a similar cellar step, leaving the closed door at the far end of the right wall and at the rear of the kitchen as mysteries. Counting it up, Han realizes the electric draw here has to be more than two or three small towns. Even where towns like Prudence do have wiring, power generation is expensive and usage prioritized. Han realizes that Oliver is watching him intently.
"I've read almost all those books," the boy whispers to him.

Taavi sighs in relief as he looks upon the warm food and kinder welcome. "Thank you much for your hospitality, sir. I'll speak frankly about why we intruded on your privacy. There are children missing in Windfall. The people of the town accuse a group called the Sons of Vukodlak of causing their disappearance. We're traveling to investigate that. And if the children are still alive, to try to secure their release and return them to their families. Your ranch was on our route, so we wished to ask the residents or resident if they might have and helpful information."

The old man clears his throat. "Yeah, that's what that damned cult calls themselves." Richard and Nora exchange a poignant look. "It's one of them that causes my trouble, too. Petr. Petr Zaitsev. They're somewhere out in the badlands, but they've got god-damned teleporters, so there's no way to find 'em. Just make sure you're not biting off more than you can chew with those werewolves." Nora is busy at the stove, not looking at the table or the conversation.

Once folks are settled in, Emile asks, "What’s this about zombies? I’ve heard of werewolves round these parts and shadow wolves, but no zombies." There is a fluctuation in the power, the lights dimming and shivering. After about a minute it stabilizes.

"Well..." the old man says, leaning back to gaze a long moment out the front window. "I regret to tell you that you'll find out tonight. They always come with the storm front. Em said the lightning made it easier to do... well, whatever they're doing. They've been checking the fences, the defenses, a couple at a time. I can feel in my bones that they're coming, though. He's been planning, and, well, no wall is really big enough. It's Petr, the bastard. One thing this planet's not short on is dead people and Petr figured out how to raise them. Sends them at us by the dozen on the worst nights. He keeps hoping to overwhelm things here and he's not going to rest until he gets all the way to the house, until he gets what he wants."

Nora's spoon clatters on the stove. She picks it up quickly. "Oliver, wash up for dinner before you sit down," the old man interjects, sending the boy scurrying to do so.

"I'm afraid you might need to help against zombies tonight, or none of us will see tomorrow." he says solemnly, looking over the gunslingers.

I should probably go get more ammo from the truck, Taavi says. I might as well bring it up to the house while I'm at it. Sir, would you mind disabling your defenses while I do that? Also, could we borrow your tractor and a chain to get the truck upright on its wheels again? To Báleygr, Would you mind coming along, just in case your repairing skills are needed?

Outside, Shadrach points to a shadowy corner between the steps and port. "Grim, stay." He turns to the older man. "Wouldn't dream o' bringin' him inside, sir. He's a servant, not a pet, anyway. I don't let myself forget what he is."

Inside, he tips his hat to Nora and nods to the young boy. He looks angry enough to spit when Whighte mentions "Petr", but restrains himself. "Necromancers. Dealt with their kind before. Well, we thank ye for your hospitality, and we're happy enough to lend a hand shoring up the fences or what-not if you need it. And we'll be on the lines tonight, of course."

He looks around the room. "You're doing fairly well for yourself out here. Don't often see homesteaders this far from town. See plenty o' burnt-out homesteads of people thought they could make it out here, though."

I’m not worried about my ammo running low but the others might be, how are you doing on supplies? What can we do to make this place more defensible?

"Roof will hold," the old man nods, "Zombies aren't smart or fast, but if he sends enough at once, not much the defenses can do. I rigged what I could - they work better on a zombie than on you, usually - but he's been testing defenses and he knows what I can't get done." He sighs. "I got what I can at the perimeter, and a funnel for those that come down the open road. Whatever you can think to add is a blessing."

Báleygr Gangleri waits for a lull in the conversation. "What does this Petr want? I'm Báleygr Gangleri, by the way. A fixer by trade."

"Things he can't have," says the old man in a firm tone, his jaw set. Nora remains silent, scooping stew onto wide shallow bowls for each of you. Oliver returns from the bathroom, hands dripping, and looks at Báleygr with excitement. "I'm good at fixing, too. The observ-a-scarecrows are my own idea," he beams. "you wanna see my stuff?"

"I don't think we'll have time for that..." trails off the old man.

Inside, Shadrach tips his hat to Nora and nods to the young boy.

Nora looks up at the grim and gristled gunman, a plaintive hope in her eyes for a long moment. She clears her throat and doesn't say anything, but ladles the last bowl a little more full and places it at an empty chair for him, offering him a furtive smile.

Shadrach looks around the room. "You're doing fairly well for yourself out here. Don't often see homesteaders this far from town. See plenty o' burnt-out homesteads of people thought they could make it out here, though."

"I don't give anyone reason to take it, or to think they should," states the old man firmly. "Em and I built this place before the War... I intend to remember, and have children that remember." He nods at Nora and Oliver, indicating them in his statement. "Proper folks aren't all dead, yet."

Hanselsmiles and offers his hand to Oliver. It's quite a collection, young man! Do you have a favorite? He'll engage in conversation with Oliver until the kid starts to lose interest, or something/someone calls him away, just generally being likable. When called to the table, he'll again engage in general conversation, making a point to compliment Nora Thank you ma'am, this is really the finest meal I have had in quite a while. My compliments. Addressing Whighte, he asks Can you tell me how your defenses are set up? I have some military experience and can take a look to see if I can spot any weaknesses. Once that conversation end, I am not a mechanic by trade, but I have picked up a fair bit of knowledge and am handy with my multi-tool, and and most standard shop equipment. after dinner, he will go up on the roof and look over the spread, doing that. Notice roll. Once that's done, he'll lend a hand with any last-minute equipment mods/repair, etc. Holding off on a fix roll until I know if it's needed.
