Lionel "Freight Train" Williams

Unaccustomed to sleeping this late, Lionel drags himself out of bed to the sound of Julia's dulcet tones. He's worn out- two-a-days in August worn out. But he's gotta get his run in, no matter how much he wants to skip it. After getting dressed, he heads outside and decides it's going to be a jogging day instead. Not really awake yet, he just starts jogging without thinking about, or paying attention to, where he's going. Hopefully, the fresh air will clear his head and help him wake up.
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Joker & Roy had checked the equipment used to create the Field Device yesterday. But they were too exhausted to do more than get the cobbled device onto the workbench before letting themselves be ushered to bed. It sits on the workbench in the shop even now. Roy did manage to check the Containment Unit last night and it checked out, humming away happily.

Julia was caught by Roy taking a big bite of pastry and looked embarrassed but still managed to put it down and chew it for an extended amount of time in a more dignified and lady-like way than one would have expected possible. She wipes her hands on a wet napkin and swallows it down with a little coffee. Mechanic... I might have you someone. He's good and fair, but you'll have to ask him what it would cost. If you think you can't do the repairs yourself on the Jeep that is.

Joker meanwhile, having grabbed some food and coffee, looks at the equipment laid out on the table that looks like a big mess. As the Turkish metal plays in the background he knows pulling it all apart into separate components would not be a problem, it was not like there was a lot of soddering but instead a lot of stripped and twisted wiring that somehow made one cringe at the rat rod compilation as well as appreciates the ingenuity it took to come up with it on the fly, much less hack it together as he had. This... however... looks... usable... If it were put together more deliberately, without the extra components here... a more dedicated component there... perhaps a program of some kind to regulate that more like a tuner... put those together this way to keep it from burning up like it did... Joker realizes he needs to make a decision to directly pull apart all this equipment or take the time to draw up what he has to re-engineer what he put together for a Beta Version of the device that could be more pertinent.

Jason wakes up and his first thought are about a pretty face that brings food when he feels down. His text is quickly answered while he gets up:
Gabby: I saw the news. I can be over there in a bit with some food. What would you all like? Everyone okay?
Roy about then joins Joker and recalls a dream he had last night about mounting something like this in the Ecto and how he created a concept based on a ham radio and controlled with a RaspberryPi setup to create a controlled containment field over a specific area kind of like what they did yesterday.

So this is me rewarding the sheer impossibility of that 40 roll at 601. Between Joker and Roy, they both come up with independent sides of the same device and how it could be something permanent you could both create. Roy could take care of the computer component part of it and Joker sees how it could be re-engineered and made practical. That is also because you both had successful rolls just now where I am tweaking your intend a little to reflect you both realizing what you could do if you both cooperate and decide to go for it.

Julia's voice comes over the intercom. Joker, there is a call for you on line 1.

Lionel meanwhile heads out into the morning air and goes for a much less riggorus morning jog. His hand throbs but assuming he checked it before heading out, he would have noticed that it was healing despite hurting. The Dr. had prescribed some ointment and pain reducers that might help as well as some anti-biotics he is supposed to take.

No need to rush, Just my attempt at humor, tho I wouldn't say no to some more of that soup :)

Jason pulls himself up from the library chairs and goes around diligently looking through the stacks of books, pulling anything he can find on Witches and warlocks, possession, hex bags, phylacteries trying to connect some dots from the prior evening. After stacking the books on one of the tables, Jason grabs a tome and heads out in hunt of coffee, shuffling down the stairs to see Julia. One cream, one sugar,...two bourbons. He winces and smirks at the receptionist. And I'm only mostly joking. He reaches for the coffee, and looks around at the others. I am going to take it easy today, try to do some research on what the hell was going on in that house and how it relates to this town, unless ya'll need my help. He settles into the chair next to Julia, And the lovely Ms. Phen may be dropping by, could you just point her my way if she does?

Jason finds a few tomes... and by tomes I mean there are a few issues of Spengler & Stanz magazine that has some information inside.

TLSS: Warlock: Can be but not always male witch. Always Bad. Witch: Practitioner of Witchcraft, whether male or female, but usually female when gifted with the craft. Good or Bad? You have to get much too close to find out in most cases.

The issues go through several parts of witches and their craft. There are kitchen witches that tend to work alone and it is typically old-world medicines like herbs and remedies. They rarely interact outside their personal space. Hedge witches who tend to care more of the environment outside their immediate homestead, often working in a much wider domain and can operate either alone or in covens. Swamp witches who, no surprise, live in swamps and can be visited (at own risk) to ask favors for trade. Success often depends on the witch's personal mood at the time. Coven Witches almost always operate in groups and are the type most often found in or around cities. They always operate in groups of 3 or more and tend to operate more in the world at large. When a coven grows too large, members begin leaving to start covens of their own in new locations.

Warlocks: Always operate alone and work with dark magics for personal gain. These can be goals associated with pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath, or even sloth. There is a footnote about this being directly connected with the 7 deadly sins in case that was not obvious.

One cream, one sugar,...two bourbons. He winces and smirks at the receptionist. And I'm only mostly joking. He reaches for the coffee, and looks around at the others.
Julia looks over at Jason and looks like she is about to give a retort then pauses and opens a bottom drawer and puts a medium-sized bottle of Bullet on her desk and motions him to it. Me too. Don't judge me.

She nods. Sounds good. I'll keep an eye out for her and let you know when she gets here.

The voice of Veronica Spengler: Mr. Jelal? This is Veronica Spengler at GBI. I wanted to personally congratulate you on the approval of the Jelal O'Roarke Device for immediate distribution and your award of full refund grant for your R&D cost as well as a permanent 25% royalty for each unit built and issued to all GBI organizations. What did that recent article he read say? Were there 315 Firehouses now? And 5 labs... all of which would be at least one device... Labs, especially connected to colleges, often have more than one... He remembers GBU having 5 Containment units alone... oh my... I have already put in the order to begin producing them. It will take several months for us to get them out to everyone, but for each one you will get your share for contribution.

Roy goes back to Julia and asks for the number of the mechanic "Julia, what is that guys number the mechanic you know of? I don't think I'll be of much use working on a vehicle my background was in computer tech not cars and jeeps. I think it may be worth a call."

Joker
Joker lets out a whoop that can be heard on the street. Grinning, he switches to the intercom.
He shouts something in Turkish, then catches himself The Jelal/ O'Rourke Device is approved for general use!
They're refunding our R&D costs, and we will be getting a percentage!

He hurries to Julia's desk and kisses the hell out of her, then returns back to the electronics lab. He works slowly and carefully, drawing detailed plans from the kitbashed Gadget.

Jason wants to specifically look for any way to tell if anyone is or has been a practitioner, seeing if he can sort out the fact from fiction. Do they make milk turn sour, or always have a mark of communing with the devil, etc. Possibly even a way to look like we would with PKE, maybe talk to Joker about working on a magical divining rod...

Lionel "Freight Train" Williams

Lionel returns from his run, the fresh air and his healing hand combining to put him in a decent mood. As he heads through the firehouse, he stops in to talk to Julia before hitting the shower. Hey, Julia, can you call Slimmerman and set up a time for that commercial shoot? Should have time available to get that done today. He holds up his bandaged hand. This hurts like a...well, a word my mama would have whipped me for sayin'. Anyway, it hurts, but it looks better than last night, so that's a great sign!

Julia is left sitting in her chair a little stunned as the Tenacious Turk blows through the office planting a kiss on her only to disappear just as quickly as he came. She blinks and turns a little red before slowly looking at the rest of the team that happens to be standing around and then quickly turns back to her work with wide eyes.

There are a few things that are never 100% for identifying a witch. Sometimes it can be a birthmark, but they are incredibly unreliable and hard to get someone to submit to, and that is only for naturally born witches with a gift for the craft. A more obvious sign is a condition known as heterochromia, or eyes that are different colors. For example one blue and one green eye, or in some cases a single eye with two distinct colors.

There are some records of witches being able to cast a Glamour over people to help control their mood or perception. This can be as simple as making someone feel calm, sleepy, happy, helpful, or on the other side, incite them to violence, make them excited, angry, antagonistic, or energized.

Sometimes, but not always, witches will have an "Aire" about them that sometimes manifest as making people, in general, feel very good, or envigorated, whereas other will make those around feel unsafe or "creepy." This is not to be mistaken for an otherworldly smell, which is covered later, but the feeling in the air around them like an energy they personally put off.

Another way to spot a practitioner is their tendency to wear black because in their craft it is used to absorb negative energies. This is twofold, some say it works to gather and filter that negative (black) energy making it pure to use or otherwise offer protections from it, whereas those that chose to use negative energy find it easier to gather and focus. This can also be seen in purple to a slightly lesser degree. On the other hand, there is also a lesser-known tendency by others to wear white more prolifically as a way to attract energy towards them functioning almost in the sense of a battery. This is much more universal, used as a signal to other practitioners as well as acting as a much more direct shield against scrying and direct attacks since it absorbs the energies involved and allows it to be used back as a potential counterspell. Only the higher-powered witches and warlocks would usually practice this particular form of dress. There is a footnote written here by Dr. Stanz himself: Please don't go harassing ladies wearing all white or black. More than once mistakes have been made accosting ladies who have a certain sense of fashion or were on their way to their wedding day.

Otherworldly smells seem to linger about wherever they go. In addition to wearing and carrying crystals, otherworldly aromas may accompany a modern witch. This witch learned how to spot a witch today by using the power of smell. Sounds crazy, right? If you know the scent of patchouli or lavender, you’ll recognize when a modern witch walks by.

There are other stereotypical ways to spot witches such as by crystals, pendants or other jewelry either on their person or in their home. Some even wear sprigs of specific plants and herbs.

Mac ask what he can do to help, and just as Jason is bringing up Slimmerman and his commercial, Lionel comes into the office asking Julia about it just that moment.

For her part, she looks between them and gestures around. Here's your meeting. Figure out what you want to do and when you are ready I will get him on the phone. He did leave the message yesterday that he was waiting for you. But you were all gone on the job. I think I smoothed things over with him, but I can tell he is ready to get this done.

Roy nods his head and takes the card "Thanks Julia you are the best." he smiles then heads off to give Mark Dunst a call about the Ecto repairs.

general conversation bits Roy intends to mention:
"Yes this is Roy O'dowd with the ghostbusters. Our Jeep has some dire need of repairs after a recent job. Would you be able to come take a look at it and give us an estimate of how much it would cost to get it repaired? Julia referred me to you. I was told you are the best mechanic in the area."

Nice out!  Cool and cloudy

Julia gets Slimmerman on the phone for you and forwards the call to the conference room so you can take it in private.

Slimmerman Guys! Someone's gotta keep me in the loop! I had the camera crew here and everything! Luckily I had some stuff for them to shoot and get the ball rollin, but I need you over here with the Jeep to sell this thing! A nice big shot of us all standing out front, those lights turned on, you guy and your lazers on, looking all baddass... that's where the money shot is going to be, you get it? Can you be over here today?

Roy hears a voice on the other end. This is Mark... he hears you out and there is a moment before he speaks again. I can work you in, but what exactly is wrong with it? I can't promise a time it would be done or an idea what it would cost without some kind of description, either way it could take a couple days. he was not exactly rude, just abrupt, gruff.

Meanwhile, Roy and Joker are in the lab crunching numbers and doing science and engineering stuff!

Okay... since you rolls so well before and got this to work in the field no less, I am going to put you as starting at Stage 3 instead of 1 since you are not working from scratch. Also, All difficulties are reduced by 1 degree, and you are both helping each other at each phase, so your rolls will add together for a result.

unfortunately i dont remember the details of what is wrong with Ecto so i cannot verbalize the issues unless the DM/GM can just use his NPCing Roy saying it.

Well...uh...Mr. Slimmerman, that's gonna be a problem. We had a house yesterday- you might have seen the news. Anyway, the Ecto took some damage. Not sure when we'll be able to get it fixed. I don't know if you want to put it on camera. Lionel pauses a moment, thinking. I might have an idea. I could check with a local cameraman, see if he has any unused footage of the Ecto from a scene. Maybe he'd be willing to sell if he's got anything. I don't know if my contacts at the tv station could do anything- I assume any footage they have would belong to the station.

R&D rolls: Day 1 (from stage 3)
[6d6]=16 Ghost [1d6]=6 +2BP
My mistake. What I meant was that you are both able to start with Day 3, Everything before is covered by the impossible rolls you made in the mission. So now we wait for Roy to see if his roll plus this one of 22 can add up to 40 or more for Day 3. Very doable!!! NOW figure in that all difficulties are reduced... You've already done it! Day 3 is completed already at 0 cost! BUT, for every level Roy adds to it (+5, +10, +20, +40) I will award you for the next Day's work since you will have unlocked a more efficient way to do things. So Roy is basically rolling for bonuses now with his tech guruness.

I will be rolling for Roy and We can fast track this a little. Sorry it has been way to long since I posted.

Roy:
Roy RnD [3d6]=10 G: [1d6]=5

Roy has a breakthrough moment while collaborating with Joker and they realize that they just saved themselves another Day of Research!

Jump ahead an additional day! This means that you are now working on simply putting together the components for final testing. You went over on your combined score enough to make a "quantum leap", so you can just write out that you are spending the working part of the day (or divide it up if you want in on some of the action with the rest of the team) and by tomorrow roll for "final test" with a more planned out build put together. You are literally getting to skip to the end. Congratulations! :)
