IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
A couple of days after the party at Gunny's, Kit catches a late shift at The Bartizan. It seems that Frank has too as Kit receives a message to report to his office. When he arrives at the floor of the Colonels office he notes that there is nobody else to be seen, and Frank's door is open
Frank is sat behind his desk, looking at some paperwork (actual paper, not electronic). He looks up as Kit approaches. "Thank you for coming Lieutenant. Please come in and close the door behind you".
Once the door is shut Frank gestures to the chair by his desk. "Please sit, there is something I need your help with, a rather delicate matter. It seems that the city has attracted two killers. The first is some kind of vigilante attacking hoodlums up in midspire, I'm not particularly concerned about that. The second one does concern me...someone is killing gang members in the downspire and Bartizan area, the same MO each time, slash attacks. Information is sparse and not particularly reliable but they started around the time our original team attacked the Bartizan, stopped during the period the company was on Inchin, and there has been another murder since we returned. I need you to look into this situation, discretely, and keep me informed. Currently the police aren't particularly interested, but somebody might notice the gap in deaths matches the Inchin trip, and this may be even more obvious when they stop while we are on Avastan. I'm not currently looking to have whoever is responsible handed over to the police, but if the situation should escalate then we need to be ready to act. "

Kit
Kit closes the door and sits straight in the chair with his fingers crossed except the index fingers which point in the direction of the Colonel. After listening to the Colonels request Kit replies,
"Given uniformity of Jump travel, this is could be anyone that jumped away from Collace for a short time, or multiple other reasons.
In order to look into it discretely, I would not be able to talk to anyone. With that in mind, I would recommend cross checking any SEMC members that were part of the company pre-Inchin and see if I can establish an alibi for each. I would request the following:
After running through his list, Kit pauses for a moment and assuming he receives some positive feedback, he continues
"Since you are the only person that I can talk to, can we establish your alibi for one or more of the murders?
Once we can establish a circle of trust, with your permission we can work to establish alibi's for any team members that I cannot do in a passive manner."

- A space to work and cover story to be working
- A list of any SEMC members that were part of the company pre-Inchin or would have been here on Collace before the hire date.
- Date, time and location of the murders. The better we can nail this down the better we can establish alibi's or lack of one.
- An video or electronic evidence that could give someone an alibi for one or more of the murders. This could include video from Gunny's, record of movement within the SEMC compound, or anything else that can be used to establish that someone was far enough away from the scene of one or more of the crimes.
- Priority should be given to clearing anyone with a Blade skill first since these are slash attacks.
- Any information that we can get from cops, local businesses, etc - most of this will likely have to wait until I come out of the shadows on this."

Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Frank nods at each of Kit's points
"I appreciate your help with this. Unfortunately, this is Collace, almost everyone local born has some skill with a blade, so a large portion of the troopers. Space is easy, we'll have to work on a cover story" he pushes over the folder of paperwork he was reading earlier "This is all I have, it's not much. I stuck with paper as it's easy to destroy and doesn't leave an electronic trail. I've listed all the suspects I can think of, with a few notes. It's long, all the SEMC that went to Inchin, the delegates from Collace and although it's unlikely it could also be any of the crew from the Spinward Star, I don't have a complete list for that one. There is one person we can rule out, Erica East was off planet for the latest attack. The police aren't interested and none of the local news outlets either, so the only source of information I have so far is a couple of local vloggers I found who are reasonably credible, one of them called the "The 'Orrible Murder Log" is almost investigative. There isn't much in the way of the electronic surveillance when we took over The Bartizan, it was the base of one of the local gangs, The Purge. I can get you access to the shift rota's and once we have pinned down when any of the attacks occured I can walk you through my activities at that time so we can confirm my alibi. Maybe it would make sense to start with the latest murder for my alibi, my recollection will be clearer. Once my alibi is confirmed you should focus on Major Prerna and Sargent-Major Henker so we can bring them on board."
Frank proceeds to walk him through the basic timeline and notes, and answers any questions...
Franks 'Fing notes, basic timeline, suspect notes and general pointers
Frank, Prerna, Jess, Cal and Polly arrive on Planet on the same ship
Above get a job escorting some Aslan through town to their lawyer's offices, that turns into a firefight to take the offices back from the local scum gang
Aslan employ polly as an associate, and the group as muscle. Some tensions between the group and Cal.
Attack on the Bartizan. Team is as above plus some local recruits (see here). During the raid Liv Ellis is freed, she was working under cover in the gang and had been tortured. Jacob Domici arrives as part of the Police medical cleanup. This seems the point at which the murders started.
Cal leaves the group.
Further recruiting of the team for the trip to Inchin, list of SEMC members who went can be found here and the delegates here. Ensign Jodi Mallory is Liv Ellis under cover.
There are a few scribbled notes, Jacob and Liv are underlined with the question "revenge?", Sazanami has "Aslan" scribbled next to it and Polly is also underlined with "warfan" written adjacent.
[It's probably worth reading Tiglath's summary of the story so far here]

Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Who am I getting addition information from this and other past threads or Tiglath?
Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Tiglath mostly. I just thought that I'd help point you at the information that Frank would have already put together in the file
Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Kit
Kit finds his desk at starts looking for the date and times of the murders and any particulars that he can find, starting with the "The 'Orrible Murder Log" and moving to a broader search.

Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Kit gets the impression this will be a lengthy enquiry and requires more attacks to facilitate the elimination of more suspects. He is also aware that the "evidence" supplied from the vlog can't be relied upon as wholly accurate and in some aspects is nothing more than "vague" - but it is all he has to work with.
However, he sets to with a will. After a day's work sifting times and places. He is able to reasonably eliminate Jess from his pool of suspects. This is due to her presence in the unit being more "visible" and because she spends more time on base than Prerna. Although Kit can't directly eliminate Prerna the fact that she spends most of her off duty time with Erica (who is eliminated) might place her within the somewhat fuzzy elimination tolerances of the enquiry.
He further reasons that if Jess can confirm all those with her at the time of one attack he can then cascade her alibi to eliminate others.
(OOC: Sorry, missed a couple of updates above!

My Favourite would be Kit. He claimed wasn't there. He claimed he knew nothing about it. And he's investigating it.

To be reasonably eliminating Jess, then I have to assume that I have some idea of one or more of the actual murders (and by the fact that I am not eliminating the whole company it has be to be when we are on planet).Tiglath wrote: ↑Fri Jun 04, 2021 3:28 pm Kit gets the impression this will be a lengthy enquiry and requires more attacks to facilitate the elimination of more suspects. Which of the sources of evidence have I used? and which does not exist at all?
- Video evidence from the SEMC base
- Non-video entry /exit id card evidence
- Some other source of location information
Can I use my Computer-2 to make any of this searching any easier?

Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Jess must have been lucky enough to have been within eyeball surveillance of Kit at the time of a crime if he's using those sources for elimination. Jess is out and about "on QM business" and "recruiting" rather often, using her bike or buggy to hurtle around the arcology. There are persistent faults in the cameras covering her areas of the Bartizan too, the sooner she hires a decent tech the better.
Her attitude of I'm team Fing. Doin' us a favour. If yer find 'em, give 'em a medal an' tell 'em I'll have their blades sharpened, free. might be incriminatory, but, as she says I'd tell yer straight if I was some ninja vigilante, be proud of it. Mad skills, creepin' around like a cat, slicin' up scum, shing! shlick, shlick, shlick. Yeah, pretty cool.
Edit
As Jess acts out the scene it is plain she hasn’t got the moves to be a knife-fighter. A bit too “bouncy” and cinematic.

It is hoped that she is wearing appropriate PE rated sports upholstery to keep that "cinematic bounce" within the proscribed PG limits!

(OOC: I posted that enquiry on behalf of Leitz who, even though moving houses and states, can still rise to the appropriate bait in absentia and by proxy.
And gurusql welcome to one of the campaign running gags!

Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Kit uses any and all evidence he can access to eliminate suspects within SEMC. His Computer skills certainly assist in tracking "eliminations" and validating alibis by cross indexing data from shift rosters and other sources such as security videos and sick records. His advantage is that he initially has no need to try to identify the suspect but just to eliminate SEMC staff on the burden of probability rather than beyond all reasonable doubt.gurusql wrote: ↑Sun Jun 06, 2021 4:36 am Which of the sources of evidence have I used? and which does not exist at all?

His intuition tells him that if the suspects is SEMC they must either be supported by fellow conspirators facilitating their actions or an individual with ample opportunity to work alone.
Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Kind of an aside, but not really are there two Johnny's in the SEMC? A Riflemen in Squad 2 and another Rifleman in the TAC Missile Team?
Re: IC:The 'Fing Inquiry - FAO gurusql
Since Kit has established that Jess is sitting with the cool kids and that she spends a fair amount of time on base, he will catch her on base and pull her into a conference room or side hallway and to ask, "Jess, can I please speak to you for a few minutes." Assuming a positive response. "I am performing an internal SEMC review for the Colonel. Can you tell me if there were any SEMC personnel with you during part of all of the following times, x, y or z?" x, y and z are the estimate times of the murders. "And if there were SEMC personnel who they are?"
I will be including the times that I have Jess on camera in the question.

With this clue, I can get it down to two people in the SEMC, Lt. Voss and Razors
