Out of curiosity, when it comes to old-school D&D, which would people prefer: Old School Essentials or OSRIC?

I definitely have my preference between the two, but I could be swayed to pick the other if there's overwhelming support in the other direction.

I don't really know either one; what I do prefer is AD&D vice Basic. Or clones thereof. Some of your 2e Thief notes make me think 2e fixes 1e stuff that always bugged me.

OSRIC is essentially 1e.

I'll also add that OSE also has a new "Advanced Fantasy" line but it has been out of print for as long as I've been looking for it. It, too, will be a 1e equivalent.

I've played OSRIC but I don't think I have ever played OSE so I cannot truly say. I'd love to give OSE a try and OSRIC is also good by me.

I could be tempted to run it if my players from archived campaigns such as Pirates: C&D forgave me for not resurrecting those in preference.
To answer that Spearmint.

I did two sorties into the Barrowmaze. One of those challenging dungeon crawls were you need to keep track of light sources and encumbrance weight. I would be happy to reincarnate either of my characters if a new venture was out forward. Grigg was a rogue and Vann Hector an elf fighter. Never got very far with either so would be happy to start afresh.

As far as the question of running either/or campaigns, I must say I had so much fun playing a rogue spy in Pirates: Cannons & Dragons. Didn't you almost TPK the whole team on a ghost ship with some 2hp Obliviax? It would be great to know what was really going on with the doppelganger Catriona and her body tattoos of buried treasure. Maybe I should reveal what really happened to the half-orc Vana. Perhaps Siggard Hagslayer invented a new, less ghastly spell. (The hag encounter was really good reading). And that was a campaign characters actually levelled up in!

I am happy to join in either, whatever your health can manage.

OSE is just Labyrinth Lord with a higher price :P That said, I prefer a basic ruleset to a more advanced one, especially in pbp. My second attempt at rolling up an ALL character (the replacement for the aformentioned ill fated thief) failed due to time constraints.

Mostly true.

OSE is also a much closer reproduction of the BX rules. LL came first, and made a bunch of tweaks to the rules to avoid potential a potential Wizards of the Coast lawsuit. Now that retro-clones are more common, and the OGL is better understood, publishers are able to make much closer reproductions -- which OSE has.

Besides, the better layout, organization, and superior print binding (for physical products) more than justifies the higher price point.

I got into the OSR because of the price point ($0), so I'm biased against a rehash of B/X if it costs extra. :)

Fair point.

Much of the aesthetic is lost, but the publisher of OSE published an OSE SRD of their Classic content for free on their website. They also offer a free sample of their basic rules on DriveThruRPG which contain much of what's needed to at least get started:

The Basic Rules wrote:This book is a fully illustrated sample of the basic rules of the game required by players:
  1. The full introduction and character creation rules.
  2. The four core human classes: cleric, fighter, magic-user, thief.
  3. Full lists of adventuring equipment, weapons, and armour.
  4. The rules for dungeon adventures, encounters, and combat.
  5. The full rules for spell casting, and the list of 1st level spells.

The nice thing is, a game could very easily be played using the actual BX rules, the LL rules, or the OSE rules with very little issue. Just set one as the default ruleset which will take precedence in the event of a discrepancy (e.g. like whether cleric's start with a spell at 1st-level -- no in BX and OSE; yes in LL).

I think it might be fun to use the OSE NPC generator to make first level characters with equipment and all, then just run with those.

I just tried it 6 times and only one of the 6 clerics had their highest score as Wisdom, and it was actually tied with Dex.
