Thinks for a minute. He looks at the gemstone necklace thinking of clarity, body and flaws. Like a good ruby wine, the hotel did serve a good one earlier. He has an inspiration to test investigate an idea.

"Look we are in a studio. Lights, camera,
action. By accident we may have stumbled across a great place."

He hurries to the studio and begins to check out the overhead studio lights, stripping one from its' socket and turning the power on. He looks about for lens and magnifying equipment.

"Why don't we see if your corundum has any conundrums?

You do know that sapphires can be laboratory grown and created by artificial means, not just natural minerals mined from the depths.

Your necklace may be lab grown with a specific reason in mind."

Tibbs wants to create a fine beam of light and shine it through the sapphire to see how refractive the light through it is. Certain sapphires will change colour under extreme Celsius heat, others reveal interior impurities and mineral deposits. The light refracts because the speed of light differs travelling through the prism. Minute etchings on the facets, only visible under microscope can also be magnified and viewed by the light beam refracting out the gem onto a surface.

"Think of looking at a rainbow trout in a river. You view the fish but because of the refraction of light in the water, you view the fish at a depth and distance fractionally away from its true location. The fish on the other hand from within the water views the angler in more magnifed detail.

So this necklace may be wrapped up in Saffa's FTL theories and its inner secrets revealed by differences in the speed of light being passed through it."

It might take a while to do an adhoc experiment to get the right fine tuned light beam to focus on the necklace sapphires and record the results. Hoping it reveals something more than a kaleidoscope of colours.
Refraction of light waves is due to the change in speed of light. When light travels from one medium to another, there may be a speed change which would then cause the light to bend and go in a different direction. Refraction is described by Snell's Law.

n1sin(θ1) = n2sin(θ2).

Where

n1 is the index of refraction of the original medium that light was traveling in,
n2 is the index of refraction of the new medium that the light travels in,
θ1 is the angle of incidence which is between the ray of light and the normal,
θ2 is the angle of refraction which is also between the ray of light and the normal.

The index of refraction of a medium is a constant which measures the slowness of light in that medium. The definition of index of refraction is

n = c/v

Where

c is the speed of light, approximately 3 × 108 m/s,
v is the speed of light in the medium,
n is the index of refraction.

n > 1 because the velocity of light in the medium will never be faster or going the same speed as if it were traveling in a vacuum.

Tiberius shakes his head - That is the first time he's thought of Miss Kikuyu's science tutorial since 276 - Shame she ran off with the Maths Tutor, she was nice. The experiment must have made more of an impression that he thought because he can't recall the rest of his science schooling at all. Maybe the guys at the University might could make more of the necklace - although they would probably want to destructively test it.

And what's with the symbol carved on it anyway?

The mount is real silver - hallmarked from somewhere. And the chain is also silver.

Tuts at his fumbles. "Noor perhaps you have more delicate hands and sensibilities for examining such artworks in finer detail. See if you can manipulate the light beam through the facets of the gemstones a bit more steadily than I."

Unless the necklace has some cryptic secrets that we can reveal I can only assume it is just an expensive necklace. Worth money but not the sole reason you are pursued across the galaxy for. With that in mind then, it is the chip of data that becomes the 'most important' element and we can relegate the necklace to just pretty bauble status.

As Noor takes over examining the gemstone he will get the details for the West Sapphire embassy and consulate office.

Tiberius and Sam/Noor
The discussions and investigations allow time to get away and Anne returns, as promised, at 7pm.

Anne: OK - I've set off some queries and got us a place to stay - Overnight rental of a property from one of my researchers who's off to the Big Rock for a story there. We sometimes put up story leads this way so it isn't out of the ordinary and isn't going to be traceable easily. I suggest we head off - it's not far and its only two minutes from a Yoruba Spice-Shop. We can get food in.

I'd suggest that we have a quiet day tomorrow while the investigations I've started do their thing.

Anne asks Noor to pull up the note from her dad

There are just over 60 "Jeans" that we could find that worked in PR in the last 8 years. We could work down the list but we need to work out how we eliminate/implicate the Jean we are interested in.
The Black Tower gets hundreds of thousands of hits so unless we have a better context, this is a dead end. I don't think it's the band but it could be.
Celisse, we all assume is the Captain of the Queen.
I guessed that Ulysses was/is another Captain. Uslsses Beekes is the only one that came up on the searches. Do you want me to set a PI to dig up the dirt on him?

I couldn't throw all of these in at once without tipping my hand. On the funding, HR, JJT, IP and KK are initials that have something to do with finance. I've got a financial research group looking for candidates from 290 to present. They should let me know tomorrow afternoon.

The Police have some sort of lead on the cart that was found in the Queen's hold, but are arguing with the Security Services over who should follow it up. Also, they have suspended cooperation with the off-world investigative groups while they agree how to divide the spoils. All seems premature to me, but that's politicians. (Sorry Noor). Anyway this has pissed off the other groups and so they have started their own, independent queries - particularly New Heaven and Touchdown who have representatives here. The PI market is getting expensive as there is a sudden shortage. That may limit the speed with which any PI we hire could operate...and if we start playing in that same pool, that may become obvious.

And finally, there are rumours that the guy who shot his way out of south spaceport is also calling the shots in at least two gangs in the North Pole City - and paying big money to do so - and the objective is to find you Noor.

Anne puts her computer away.

OK - Lets move to the flat, grab some food, and mull over all this? If you prefer, we could stay here...There are sleeping bags in one of the cupboards somewhere, but I wouldn't guarantee how many previous occupants that they have had.

"Well that is great. See ten years plus of agents enquiries into Starflight turns up less that Anne does in an afternoon. Guess Noor made the right call not shooting you dead yet."

He responds to Anne and the mass of info. Did Noor turn up any necklace secrets?

"I will escort you ladies to the apartment but I have my hotel suite and other commitments to fulfill."

He leaves contacting the Sapphire consulate for another time and accompanies the duo to the next accommodation, giving a recon of the route and possible trailing drones and goons. He will be in contact by phone tomorrow at some point but doesn't expect to return to the place until Friday lunchtime.

But none of this was related to starflight. New Evidence, new progress? new dead end?
Stirling wrote: Sat Mar 20, 2021 2:48 pm He responds to Anne and the mass of info. Did Noor turn up any necklace secrets?
As far as she can see the necklace is just a necklace...and an uncharacteristically expensive token from her father.

The move to the new apartment is a bit round-about but you don't seem to have any tails and don't think you have exposed Noor to any camera surveillance.

And with that, Tiberius and Anne+Noor part company.

Tiberius
Redacted due to post overlap
Anne+Noor
The house is homely, neat and in need of Supplies as the occupant went away not expecting to have guests. Anne procures a take-away, beverages and stuff for breakfast. And then they settle in for a chat.

I'll concatenate any overnight chat and breakfast posts after this point

Pats Anne before he leaves reassuringly.
"You did great Anne. I trust Noor is in safe hands."

Leaving the pair at the apartment.

Contacts the Touchdown Embassy reception. Using his guile he asks to contact 'Miss Cotli' and finds she has already left the building so enquiries if anybody is deputising at her desk such as Jensen perhaps? Finding out if he is in the building or has even left with Tansu earlier.

Tiberius. Deception [2d6+1]=7+1=8

He pays a cab to wait opposite the embassy so he can stakeout Jensens' exit and follow him home.

The embassy staff answer the call...I'm sorry, the department can be contacted between 9am and 5pm each weekday. If the matter is an urgent legal matter we can page them, but otherwise, please leave a message and the team will be in contact in the morning

The stake-out is longer than expected and, after some hours, you begin to surmise that he's already left...END roll please

Finding out if he is in the building or has even left with Tansu earlier.
Was hoping I would get that info from the receptionists earlier. Okay, after time watching the office lights in the embassy dim and turn off and no sign of Jensen working late, Tiberius will pay the cab driver for the time and return to Hotel Paradiso and his suite there.

He goes through the days events, from shareholder meeting disasters to the commitments of the contending share owners to co-operate and the information trails he will follow up for Noor. He feels like one of those 'stretch Armstrong' toys that are pulled out of shape to test their elasticity. The break in at Tansu's a concern. He will make his own enquiries into that later.

For the evening he props up the bar with a bottle of Sparks 'hoarse and coarse' malted whisky, checking with the staff if any of the other shareholders are present and what the latest gossip was surrounding the earlier arrests.

The curious bit is that it is as Tiberius is driving away that he notices Jensen - he's walking along, heading back to the building. The Cab has stopped to allow him to cross ahead of it.
Talk about rolling exactly what was needed!
Tiberius can see a group of people from Tansu's office standing outside a bar - There was a leaving do!

Spies the colleague of Tansu walking alone back to the office and embassy compound.

"Please driver. Wait for me here while I go invite a friend for a ride home. Here is the address we shall go to."

He gets the driver to park on the sidewalk and wait as he exits the cab using his most discreet fashion to walk up behind an unsuspecting Jensen. Tibbs places a friendly hand upon the guys shoulder and from under his jacket carried across his arm, jabs the barrel of his revolver into the guys spine.

" Jensen my friend. Leaving so early? I hope any 'goodbyes' won't seem premature. A certain colleague was not able to enjoy your fellowship at the party this evening and would so like your company for a moment. A quiet word perhaps and a short ride.

Please after you. The cab awaits."

Cab address to stop near to safe house address. I have from Tansu the apartment keys and entrance details.

Jensen
Tiberius, Good to see you man. Didn't see you at the party - A taxi - OK. Left my coat at work, but if you're giving me a lift, That great!
Now you are up close, it is clear that Jensen has been downing the drinks at way above cruise-speed and might ignite if you lit a match! He probably wobbled in front of the Taxi rather than deliberately crossing the road. You're not even sure he's registered the gun.

Manoeuvring him into the cab is a struggle, and the Taxi Driver is adamant that "If he throws up I'm charging you for cleaning and lost earnings"

Fortunately, Jensen appears to fall asleep as soon as he sits down.

"No worries driver. You just keep your eyes on the road and I'll watch out for 'Jack Daniels' here.". He jokes about the inebriated guest and the centuries old tipple. As the cab gets underway, Tiberius frisks Jensen down, removing his gun if any and his comms devices.

If we arrive without incident at the address he will pay the driver double tips and walk Jensen in the same 'arm around shoulder, gun in his ribs' fashion. After the alleged drug bust of a dud apartment, he doesn't expect much in the way of local police staking the place out but recons the area anyway.

This is the wrong house...
...Followed by a lurch to the right as Jensen avails himself of a wall to throw up over...
Ah
...And slumps into a boneless heap by the wall

Noor

"Nice work, Anne." Noor is appreciative of the effort Anne is putting in.

"See you later Tibbs. Watch your back."

"That necklace is just out of place, you know? And I know I've seen the inscription in other places. My mom had a ring with it on it. I mean, at first, I thought it stood for my name, but the more I think about it, maybe not?"

"Yes. Dig into Ulysses. Maybe Jusu didn't contact him, but my guess is that he used multiple ships. I think HR is Heinrich Rowe, and KK is KK masai. Both company "secretaries". Which sounds a lot like fixers. Their names keep popping up with multiple companies linked to this whole thing."

"Thanks for being accommodating with Tiberius. I'm concerned for him. These leaks are coming from the embassy or his contacts. Too many coincidences." She frowns. "Speaking of coincidences, look at this message my "dad" sent. I say that because it seems strange." viewtopic.php?p=526185#p526185

"C'mon, c'mon old boy. Now way to act when ladies are present. Just a few more steps."

Tibbs is well versed in marshallIng reluctant suspects so doesn't pity Jensen's antics, however real the puke may be. He will still grab him by the collar and frogmarch him to the Embassy safe house, punching in the access code and getting to the door.

He might give him a slight cosh around the head to wake him up a little if needed.

Tiberius comes across a major obstacle - The door has been broken down and repaired by the police - they have installed new locks! The two of them are stuck on the doorstep.

After frisking down Jensen in the cab, what personal items of his did I find? I was trying to take any concealed weapon and his comms unit?

Arriving at the door he 'tuts'. A note from Officer Dibble requesting the landlord to pick up the new key at the station. He doesn't have time for such trivialities. He checks the landing is clear of nosey neighbours and after fixing the suppressor to his gun barrel, he simply shoots the lock and barges Jensen through the door frame.

Jensen is carrying his Comms/Credit unit, some notes in Cash and a cork.

Jensen's entry is inelegant, as you let go he basically falls to the floor

Oi! That hurt! Why didn't you take me home? Tansu's going to be angry with you!

Just inside the door is a house alarm...Fortunately, it seems to be off.
