Coming in from the cold

#1 Post by Magnus »

Hi everyone.

I started playing (and DMing) play-by-post a few years ago. My main site was unlimitedrpgs.com, but I also played in a few games on rpol.net. After the games I was in died all at once for various reasons, I took a break for a couple years. I came across this site while lurking on dragonsfoot.org about a month ago and got the "itch" again.

I've played 1E (AD&D and Classic), various retro clones, 3.5/Pathfinder, and The Window systems. Though I am not one for "Edition Wars", I think it is pretty clear that PbP suits rules-lite/high DM fiat systems a little better --- though the ultimate success of the game depends on a shared vision for the game and dedicated players/DM.

I would love to jump into a game or three. I also have a long-standing dream game to run, which would consist of a modified version of Against the Giants set "North of the Wall" in Westeros many years before ASOIAF.

I am a generally an even-keeled, "grown-up" poster who can keep up with fast-paced games during coffee breaks at work, where I am at a desk all day most days. Happy to point people to my old games on unlimitedrpgs.com if you want a sense of my playing and writing style.

Thank you! 8-)

Whoah! I wish I had time to play in that game!! My players would kill me as I am late updating my own games - stupid job keeping me on the road... oh yeah, hey welcome Magnus!!!!

Sounds like you'll fit right in. The group of folks here are pretty fantastic and most have similar back stories. Hope you find a game soon. The more organized Mod will come over and tell you some good site specific info.
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Oi! Don't even think about it!

Ola Magnus, and welcome.

Uurgh! you lost as soon as you mentioned "Westeros". I'd only play an unsullied version of the G series set on Greyhawk, as God and Gygax intended. :) But I am sure some folks here would jump at the opportunity to play that variant and you'd have no issues gathering a party of players if you start it.

In fact, given the amount of newcomers hankering for a game we've been having of late you could probably run anything FRPG and most likely have to shoo away extra players with a stick.

Right... coffee'd up and a bit more bright-eye'd.

If you've not already found them, the following threads contain yer basic information for new players and DMs on the Unseen Servant. Those sections also have lots of other threads with useful bits in them (once you wind out the chaff ;) ).

DM info: viewtopic.php?f=32&t=859
Player info: viewtopic.php?f=33&t=858

Of course, if you have any questions of any kind, feel free to ask. Any tips or advice? Feel free to add! Either way, you are most welcome here.

Cheers,

Al

Welcome sir i'm sure you could find players if you have the time to DM and we are always welcoming new DM's to the fold. I don't mind something in Westeros as long as there is lots of nudity otherwise it's not fitting with the theme.

Thanks again, everyone. Couple things---

If folks were cool with a high degree of DM Fiat (though fun) and a minimum of visual aids (at least to start), I may well roll out my "dream game."

I would not say that I am a fan of 3.5, as much as that was the system everyone was using when I jumped into PbP. Love the "fluff" of Pathfinder, though, especially the "Revisited" series.

As long as you explained what you wanted to do, then the players join up knowing what the game will be like. Folks here like all sorts of different games. When you are ready then post in the Looking for Players forum. And good luck sir!!

Magnus and I makes two, I believe ;)

I am also new around here Magnus, but I have to say I can tell already you'll be right at home here, and also let me be one of the first to say that it's great to see a new DM on the forums! I have to say I'm very taken with your 'dream game' proposition. Although, I may have to agree with AQuebman on his points regarding thematic verisimilitude in the world of Westeros...

Welcome, Magnus! I'd love to see a fan's interpretation of early Westeros. Hope you find the inspiration to run games here.
