Just before the party steps out from cover, Bruard casts Protection from Evil on Jeloon.

Spell goes off fine (IIRC that's a long cast time, but obviously you all took it into consideration) and Jeloon is so protected.

Right after a short wait everyone hears a roar and sees a great disturbance in the wooded area as some sort of large creature whirling about.

My apologies again as I am on my phone but someone may want to look up the charging rules. There's not much of a line of sight for missile weapons at this point and the density o the trees would make it impractical anyway. You all are a distance away at this point. The State is inspecting one of my programs but I will try to check back in soon.

charge: Charging into combat allows the attacker to move and then attack in the same round. A charge is made at twice the normal movement rate (and must terminate within the 10 ft melee range of the target). If the defender has a longer weapon than the attacker, the defender attacks first (unless the defender has already acted in this round). The attacker gains no dexterity bonus against such an attack (and characters with no Dex bonus receive a +1 AC penalty). Additionally, if the defender has a weapon set against the charge (see below), he or she will inflict additional damage with a successful hit against the charging attacker.

Assuming that the charging character survives, he or she gains +2 “to hit” on his or her attack. Characters may only perform a charge once every 10 rounds (i.e. once per turn). Characters who are at the maximum encumbrance category may not charge unless they are mounted and the mount is below the maximum encumbrance category. An attacker riding a warhorse or other combat-trained mount and equipped with a lance inflicts double the damage rolled on the charge round. (Although the weapon damage is doubled, any bonus for strength, magic, specialization or other such modifier is not.)

closing into combat:
When two groups of combatants are not within the 10 ft melee range, the attackers may choose either to charge into combat or to advance more cautiously, closing into combat. Closing into combat does not allow the character to make an attack roll that round; the cautious advance does not generate the opening to make a significant attack. However, neither may the character’s opponent attack until the round after closing.

When closing into combat, the character may advance the full amount of his or her movement.

There is still a little bit to do in PMs, but you are all 60' away, plus, from the action. So you can all close this round, and attack next round, or the charge (with the penalties) to attack this round.

If I read this correctly. Course no one is quite sure what they are attacking.

That sounds like an accurate interpretation of the charging rules, Mr. GM. (Or do you prefer DM?)

The roar is cut short in a sort of "snerk" sound, and then you all hear a loud THWUMP! Then it's quiet again.

Till steps out from the darkened woods, bloodied short sword in his right hand, raising a very large (for him, anyway) and cool looking spear in his left hand, as if it were a standard.

He looks out across the clearing at the rest of the party, a wide grin on his face, and winks.

Pointing at the tomb entrance/cave entrance with his sword, he says, "I believe there is at least one more in there."

When the roar is bellowed, Yosef points his bow at the movement and almost lets fly. When it is cut short and he can make no target, his first instinct was to pull his sword and charge forward. Instead, he keeps the arrow trained on the tomb entrance, expecting a side attack at any moment.

When it does not come, and Till walks out from behind cover with evidence the threat is neutralized, the elf's jaw almost drops. "Damn" is all he manages with an unusually wide grin at his halfling companion, turning to look back toward the tomb entrance after snapping back to.

When Till offers his quick explanation, Yosef nods to him, then turning to Jeloon and Bruard, he indicates that he's ready.

"Let us spread out a bit, friends, so as not to make a singular target here" Yosef offers to Jeloon and Bruard as he quickly steps to the side of his companions. Losing his previous smile at Till's amazing handiwork and refreshing his concentration to the task at hand, he quickly slings his bow and stows the arrow and then pulls Jeloon's magical longsword with one hand and the Wand of Fire with the other.

He then looks into the darkness of the tomb entrance, leveling the wand menacingly in its direction. He will raise and deepen his voice, clearly stating some words in orcish. "Looks like the threat from the trees is no longer. I will now destroy anything that lies in wait for us..."

The elf is ready to use the wand here, but hopes his proffered bluff will be heard and understood within.

OOC: apologies for my previous confusion with our personnel present and the physical layout/dimensions of where we are, gents; I went back and edited my previous posts to reflect a more correct course of action to the actual facts. Trying to go back and reread past posts and/or trying to find clarifications on these damn smartphones can take forever! Not only had I prepared a lengthly post previous to all the action going down (which then became a mute point) but somehow my OSRIC.pdf got corrupted and wont open to boot! Aagghh!

~ Yosef is obviously hoping that whatever enemy lies in wait for them understands orcish and that his words will possibly elicite a favorable reaction of sorts

Till moves to stand somewhat by Jeloon and in a quiet voice, that only Jeloon can here, says, "Take the spear and we'll see if we can get them to charge you. If they do, then set the spear against the charge."

(If we're "consensus-running" Jeloon until Migellito returns, is that cool with everyone? The rest of us should step back a little, leaving her as the primary target.)

Then he loudly says, also in orcish, "If you doubt my fine elven friend here, then cast your eyes on your leader's spear! I slew him with two strokes of my sword and he cried like a dwarf as he died before my feet."

Jeloon stands with the spear to recieve any such charge.

There's no movement from the entrance. No sounds that you can hear from this distance. (which I'm assuming is 10 - 15' out from it.)

Till warily glances at the other party members, then quickly peers back at the entrance to the tomb.

In a low tone that only the others should be able to hear, he says, "Could be a couple things here... Maybe there is a door and any other ogres are inside with the door closed and didn't hear anything that happened out here. Maybe the ogre has just camped out here and has never actually gone into the tomb... which means whatever the wand was indicating lives in the tomb..." he shudders. "Either way, let's make sure there is no immediate danger here and advance just a ways into the tomb entrance using the light of Yosef's (Jeloon's, I know) sword to make sure nothing is waiting in the shadows."

Marching order will be:
Jeloon and Till
Bruard and Yosef

Before they move forward, Till signals for Ancor to advance more towards the middle of camp and start getting a lantern prepared.

When Till makes his way over to the group, Yosef will take a quick look around their perimeter and above them, to ensure there is nothing watching or advancing on them.

He'll then nod his agreement to the halfling's words and prepare to move forward with the group.

As the party moves forward into the cave the first thing that the front line notes is that it's dark, then they hear a crashing noise, quickly followed by a growl.

Several dead trees and small boulders fall down from just inside the entrance covering Jeloon who fails in her attempts to avoid it. Then a big black bear comes from the left (we'll call it the port side, or Jeloon's side) and attacks.

I need a Save vs. DEX roll from Till. I'll also take one from Josef and Bruard but they get a bonus of -3 to the roll. So DEX or lower on the d20 to not get covered in trees and boulders. Jeloon fails and takes 3hp damage (she's now at 26) and is trying to extricate herself from the pile.

Also the bear rolls an initiative of 1. :( No surprise as y'all had an idea something was coming. I'll describe the cave in more detail once the battle begins.

Keeping track of HPs: Jeloon - 26/29; Till - 32/36; Yosef - 10/10; Bruard - 19/19
Let me know if I'm off here.

Saving Throw [1d20] = 19

Oi. You've got to be kidding me! This is the one roll I should have been able to make! Ah, well...

Till, too, is covered by the rubble and timber. He immediately begins extracting himself from the debris, cursing and muttering as he does. "I'm gonna mount this bear skin on the wall just under that ogre's head..."

Initiative [1d6] = 5

Well, at least we got the initiative...
