It's been a long time...

#1 Post by Daryth »

Hello to everyone, I am excited to have discovered this board!
AD&D was such a huge part of my life while growing up. I was a DM for 13 years playing a mash up of 1E and 2E. Primarily in the Forgotten Realms, but I still held a couple of campaigns in my own game settings. I still have all my books and dice from my younger years and after a long time of them being buried by shadows in a box at the back of my storage room, I recently took them out and prominently displayed them in my den (along with a fair sized transformer display). I regularly catch myself perusing the old tomes of yore, reminiscing about adventures past.
I have recently decided to start a game with some friends I have where I live in Edmonton, Alberta and I thought a play-by-post experience would be a great way to get those rusty gaming skills back in shape. Once I started reading this board a little bit I realized that there seems to be a pretty awesome community of gamers here that I would be happy to be a part of!
While I still need to bone up on how things work around here before I start gaming, I am looking forward to the experience and learning.
A little more about myself:
I am a 34 year old married man with one 9 year old daughter (who I will be introducing to the game soon). I am a carpenter by trade and a real estate investor (soon to become full time which will give me more time to game). I love transformers and other geeky stuff and I play lead vocals but I think I am going to be giving that up soon. Life and real estate are really taking me away from music lately.
Anyways, thanks for reading and I hope to join a game with some of you very soon!

Welcome to the Unseen Servant, Daryth! If you've not already found them, you might find the following threads to be useful here on the forum:

viewtopic.php?f=32&t=859
viewtopic.php?f=33&t=858

If you ran a mashup of 1e and 2e, then you'll fit right in here. There are several games along those lines going on, with one by dmw71 ([url+viewforum.php?f=48]Adventures in Foxmoor[/url]) that is specifically a 1e core rules game with lots of 2e and custom rules thrown in.

Hope you find a game to join soon!

Cheers,

Alethan

Welcome Daryth!! I'm a daddy of daughter(s) as well! My 11yo loves 1E and I'm easing her into OSRIC, the 9yo loves playing as well! The 6yo enjoys it, and is pretty good but has to be in the mood. My 2yo, well she just likes the dice! :D

It really is a wonderful group of folks here. The games I DM as well as play in have been fantastic good fun for me for, omigosh, years now. Tensions may flare up, a bit ;) , at times, as they may do. But no one's "flipped the RISK board," as has happened in my youth. Dang I miss RISK.

Er, back on track Ron... Anyway a hearty welcome to you, be well and be welcome!
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Thanks for the awesome welcome guys! I am wondering, is there a glossary section for all the abbreviations running around here? It would help greatly when it comes to understanding some of the threads that I'm trying to read to figure out the basics of playing here.

Hmmm... not really. What were you wondering about, though? I might be able to work on something to post under the Tips for the Player portion of the RPG Discussion section.

We use a lot of acronyms? I can't think of any except OSR, RPG, FRPG and game titles/editions.

Oh, and welcome Daryth.

Actually, it would be nice to compile a translation for the list rredmond has posted.

I will volunteer to take on the task. :)

A lot of those are standard internet acronyms. Some I am unfamiliar with.

Then there's all the character specific stuff (HP, DAM, TH, etc.)
And those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head! ;)
This would mostly complete all the abbreviations/acronyms that I had in mind. A lot I do know such as the character specifics, and regular Internet stuff.
Thanks Norjax for taking that on!
You guys are being so helpful I'm feeling a little useless here

Sure thing, brother. If you are so inclined, you can start putting stuff in the thread here:

viewtopic.php?f=33&t=1652

Then I'll throw the compiled list into the first comment there and people can add (and I'll append) as necessary.

Welcome Daryth! PbP is good story telling fun. I have kids also, though too young for RPGs, but I'm starting them off with the old Dungeon board game.

Added a couple more to my post up above, but I'll stop hijacking this thread and enjoy the new one that's started down in the "Tips for the Player" forum.
