Hey, it's that new kid! GET 'IM!
Hi, all!
Ever since I started extensively reading old-school PbP campaigns over on the RPG.net forums, I have been intrigued by the notion of joining in on one such adventure (or many!). I was referred over to this forum as well, so here I am, saying "Hello, world!"
I started playing table top D&D back 7 years ago, and until more recently I have almost exclusively been playing the 3.0 and 3.5 line of D&D. I had a stint with d20 modern and D&D 4E, but the interest never stuck, unfortunately. I am somewhat limited in the range of systems that I am familiar with as a result of this, but I love me some good ol' fashioned classic dungeon crawling and RPing, regardless of edition.
I have never played in a PbP campaign, but hey, I'm eager to learn!
I hope to meet you all around the forum, and by chance, we may even take up arms together one day.
Cheers.

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

Welcome Oddfellow! I'm still learning PbP myself, and having a blast.

Good to see you here, Oddfellow.
Re: Hey, it's that new kid! GET 'IM!
We don't seem to have much going on in the 3.0+ range these days. In fact... have we ever had a 3.0 or higher game on the forum? Anyone know?
In any case, you're absolutely welcome on the Unseen Servant! Maybe we can show you the light and get you into a B/X or 1.0 (or OSRIC or Labyrinth Lords or one of the other old school clones) game here soon.
Welcome!
Al

Thanks, all!
Thanks for the warm welcome, gentlemen!
I would love that; the only reason I haven't gotten into older D&D editions and the like is that none of the people I gamed with knew how to play it, much less even access the books. So hey, now is as good a time as any to learn! That was a large part of why I came to this forum, after all.Maybe we can show you the light and get you into a B/X or 1.0 (or OSRIC or Labyrinth Lords or one of the other old school clones) game here soon.

Thanks for the warm welcome, gentlemen!

Well, it figures that if one can't access the product they can't use it or know how to use it, right?
But OSRIC, LL and their cousins have been available for quite some time now. This "I couldn't access it" testimony makes me think that maybe some more aggressive marketing/promotion, putting special emphasis on the fact they are FREE is in the order of the day. "If you build it they will come" and all that, but if they don't know about they won't come anyway.
When you stack up multiple 50$ books against a free product...why aren't the free oldies flying off the virtual shelves more? hmmmm....
Re: Hey, it's that new kid! GET 'IM!
You're right, the "I couldn't get books" gambit was a bad excuse. However, if you had asked me even 6 months ago if I knew what OSRIC or LL was, I probably would've just stared at you blankly and asked if you were trying to sell me drugs. But OSRIC, LL and their cousins have been available for quite some time now.
So, chock it up to not spending enough time on forums learning these things, I guess!

Re: Hey, it's that new kid! GET 'IM!
Welcome sir I hope you find my DCC game to your liking as discussed on other threads as it scratches a nice itch that newer gamers from the 3.0+ era like.
I have found the hardest part about getting into old school stuff is that nobody in my group already knows the rules and nobody wants to learn a new system when they already know one.
Virtual books a nice but unless you have a lot of time and an awesome printer it can be difficult to bring that to the gaming table. Nobody wants to read and learn a new system on your laptop lol.
I think that is the problem that is commonly seen with the free old editions is a mixture of being tired of new book because of splatbooks from WoTC and apathy of learning a new system that is very foreign by comparison from 3.x or 4.0
