Gruuthuk

I don't really know much about setting traps, but I can watch for more of those obnoxious little punks. Gruuthuk will hide around the corner, peering down the southern hall.
He'll be 5' east of where Nella is on the most recent map.
Stealth: [1d20+9] = 1+9 = 10
Just in case: [1d20] = 16

Noting the lesser injuries of Xanlanan and Gruuthuk as well, the Baroness efficiently bandages and wraps their cuts and abrasions along with Lika's before everyone takes a short rest and she settles in to study the statue and capture its likeness on canvas.
I went ahead and checked the footer material. :) Please just speak up if you refuse healing so you can spend your own hit dice.

Also, Nella packed along four healer kits, so it might be easier to count down as from 40 insteadof 10. I expected to need to do this often...

Heal Xanlanan [1d6+10] = 1+10 = 11

Heal Gruuthuk [1d6+10] = 4+10 = 14

Repeating rolls for easy GM reference:
As Needed Roll [1d20] = 16[1d20] = 14

Statue stuff (doubled in case of Advantage from having both skill and proficiency applied)
Perception [1d20+6] = 20+6 = 26[1d20+6] = 17+6 = 23 History [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19[1d20+3] = 12+3 = 15
Painting proficiency (wis or dex) [1d20+6] = 4+6 = 10 [1d20+6] = 12+6 = 18

Rested
The arcane illumination ceasing on Xanlanan's glowing coin marks the successful completion of a short rest, leaving Nella's lantern as the only remaining light source.

During the period of downtime, the occasional scurrying sound and hushed goblin chatter are heard at various times, but none escalate into a disruptive situation. It does become apparent, however, that resting in a dungeon, while possible, is far from a certainty.

While the others rest, Unari and Gruuthuk agree to monitor the northern and southern exits, and Nella devotes her energies towards providing some initial healing towards others before turning her attention to the statue fragments.

A thorough examination of the seventeen fist-sized chunks of black stone that make up the object reveals that, in its pre-destruction state, the statue likely depicted three male human warriors standing together on a stone mound, facing outward and clutching swords. The statue does not hint at having any magical properties; likewise, the human subjects depicted don't offer any historical significance. It's just a simple piece of art that would likely require a significant time investment to restore; likely weeks.

Xanlanan, Gruuthuk are returned to full-strength, while Lika and Nella still nurse fairly significant or nagging injuries.

Short rest recovery rolls: Feeling better, Nella checks her bandages and then closes her sketchbook and packs her easel. Taking up her lantern, she calls the others to counsel.

"So, the next move. Goblins in the door on the south of the hallway. They fled both north and south in the main hall. We shall likely find them everywhere, so where to begin? Do we want them or seek the mystery hallway with the mirrors? Is anyone interested in trying to question them to learn more?"

Unari

"In numbers they are dangerous, unlikely to do us in in a direct assault they will continue to harass and weaken us until we fall to something more powerful or are so weak they are willing to try and finish us off. If possible we should avoid them or try and corner them and wipe them out. That will require careful planning and a better knowledge of this area."

Xanlanan nods gratefully at the healing magic provided. "It is indeed a wondrous world that allows for such ability to channel the power of the gods."

He abandons any further investigation into the statue and looks more interested in the darkness and what other secrets the vastness of the Undermountain may reveal. "The goblins could be a problem, we can all agree to that. Don't you know, I was apprenticed to a fellow who was well, umm, you could say assertive in his ways of magic and dealing with danger. I say assertive when, of course, I mean aggressive, but that's just not a polite thing to say, is it?" he pauses a second in reflection, "yes, I know I did indeed just say it, but, well, there it is and there's no use crying about spilled spell components is there? Anyway, what I was trying to say is that this fellow had a saying - the best defense is a good offense. Makes sense, I suppose, and perhaps with our selves a bit rested up we should, as they say, 'Take it to 'em'?"

The Baroness Nella smiles at Xanlanan. "The gods are capricious and fickle," she says absently, then catches herself, looking for expressions in the group. "Rather, I offer nothing but my own skill as a physician, and perhaps the efficaciousness of camphor and johnswort in the salves and ungents applied. I find it best to trust oneself over the vagaries of beings beyond this world. A beneficient ruler requires more surety than such entities may provide."

She sketches in her book, showingthe others, the long north-south hallway and the four passageways and the door off of it. "Now... we know this northmost cooridor leads to the chamber where previous explorers have camped, and notably, without bloodstains on the floor to mark their demise. It is more secured than this chamber for a longer rest and might suitably serve as a back-up for that purpose. We should consider that we will need a longer rest to fully recover after another skirmish or two. You are right, that we do not wish to be defeated by exhaustion or attrition, so we must duly plan ahead."

She pauses, examining the northern wall and northeastern corner carefully. As she does so, she continues speaking of it. "We have explored the third and fourth hallways by being here. This allows two areas of interest remaining, one of which hopefully gives egress for our eventual ascent and both of which I hope may present mysteries to make our quest worthwhile." She examines the seams and features of the masonry. "The one I hold more hope for is the second hallway, the one with the mirrors, which clearly extended into a collonaded chamber which should wrap around this corner of this chamber as it opened both northward and southward. If there is a secreted entrance here, we could bypass whatever clever trick awaits us in the mirrored hallway. If we are not so lucky, then we must ascertain the trick of the mirrors to gain entrance. That pathway is what seems of greatest interest to me."
Passive perception, just explicitly confirming that we're checking for secret doors. I'll let you call for a roll of you want one.
She returns to the drawing she has made of the corridors as seen so far. "Elsewise, we have the door to the south off this very hallway and the door at the south end of the long corridor, both of which lead to a room or rooms which we know contain goblins." She looks up at each face. "We saw goblins retreat through this door, and southward to the other. We also saw some retreat northward, so they either lie in wait where we hope to rest or they know the secret to passing the mirrors. While we are currently hale, we could, as you say, take an assertive approach to the southern chamber. We could have the objective of capturing one or more promising subjects to put to the question, learning more of what lies ahead of us. In doing so, we also secure more of this floor and what will lie behind us. We may weaken ourselves, however, for facing what traps and ambushes lie northwards between us and the collonade chamber or a longer secure resting position. So we must choose wisely - northward or southward. What other opinions? What capabilities do you wish to add to such a plan?"

Lika

When Nella speaks ill of the gods, one might notice a change in Lika's expression. The feathers on his face ripple a bit, whether that signifies a raising of a brow or a slight smile is hard to decern. "Thank you, Baroness. You are quite adept at caring for wounds. The loss of those above proves to be our gain."

"Did you manage to wound any who escaped?" She looks down at the pool of blood that he has produced in the last few minutes. "If one were to track me, for instance, it may be an easy task."

"We would be best served by not having an enemy behind us as we proceed. Moving north to secure that area would be my suggestion."

Sorry about the delay. :D
Before resting, Lika will cast two spells, then recover them during the rest.
Cure Wounds: [3d8+3] = 10+3 = 13 On Nella, hopefully preventing the need to use HD to recover.
Cure Wounds: [3d8+3] = 10+3 = 13 On Lika. And maybe I'll roll something different next time. :?
If Needed: [1d20] = 12

if either Xanlanan or Unari choose north, that is a majority. (Nella abstained, but would have chosen south first.)

I think DM can take us north to the next encounter, or if the way to the rest-chamber is all still clear, return to the mirror hall.

I'm actually finalizing my next update now, which should be ready shortly. Without a clear consensus, my plan is to move the group to the intersection of the north/south hallway, which will show a bit additional details that you can use to inform your next course of action.

North or South?
After packing her easel and taking up her lantern, Nella checks her bandages before repacking her healing supplies. Her avian companion, Lika, appears to be the only one still nursing any wounds.

The group reviews Nella's sketches of their progress so far, noting the details of what they've passed further north of their current position, plus the unexplored section to the south.

Without a clear consensus on direction, the group backtracks to the intersection of the north/south hallway:

Hallway with Tracks.jpg
Hallway with Tracks.jpg (41.06 KiB) Viewed 1538 times

In this main north/south hallway, bloody goblin footprints extend in either direction.

The tracks heading south indicate the source of the blood disappeared into a door maybe 30-40 feet in that direction.

To the north, the footprints appear to disappear, or at least lighten or trail off after roughly the same 40-foot distance, but the important detail learned from this is they continue past the mirrored hallway.

---

Notes
  1. Nella only used one of the four supplied HD recovery rolls due to Lika's spell.
  2. I show everyone being at full strength except for Lika, who's down 11 hit points. Feel free to spend hit dice or more Healing Lights, if you'd like. Or Nella could expend another use of her healing kit with her healer feat; the one use would have been before the short rest, so a second could be used after.

"Thank you," the Baroness says sincerely to Lika as she gets imbued with healing energy.

After they have rested, Nella applies salve and addresses Lika's wounds. "Allow me. Save the magic for more dire times."
Healer Kit [1d6+9] = 1+9 = 10
Should only be 1 hp down? Lousy roll, sorry.

Reaching the intersection, the Baroness Nella nods and speaks crisply. "It is decided then," her lantern shines down the hallway before them. "If they skipped the mirror hallway, we shall find them ahead and they likely lack information of value regarding it. Unari, Gruuthuk - take the lead. I will hold the lantern light back until you report or engage."

No rush!

Just a DM note that I'm waiting on an action for Gruuthuk.

However, for purposes of Lika's Guidance spell, who between Gruuthuk and Unari will formally take the lead?

Gruuthuk

A cruel grin splits the bugbear's face. Let's go kill some goblins, he says to Unari. Readying his bow, he takes the lead, sneaking down the hallway in the darkness. He moves out before Lika can pat him on the shoulder.
Gruuthuk has a +9 for stealth. He'll move ahead and leave the guidance for the more cautious Unari if he wants it.
Stealth: [1d20+9] = 17+9 = 26
Shortbow: [1d20+6] = 4+6 = 10; Damage: [1d6+3] = 3+3 = 6; Sneak Attack: [3d6] = 10
Just in case: [1d20] = 12
On November 2nd I will be participating in another 24 hour game of Dungeons & Dragons as part of Extra Life. This organization uses gaming to help raise money to donate to children's hospitals. I'm raising money for Marshfield Children's Hospital in Marshfield, WI, and all money I raise will go to that hospital. All donations are tax-deductible. Please take a moment to check out my donation page below. Thank you.

Nella will shutter the lantern, following at least 30' behind and waiting just shy of the northern corner so as to not let the light spill around. She will wait there and respond after they report back or there is clear sound of engagement.
