In response to Kar Leon replies aye captain and targets the bunkers, to Ingrid he commands Take out the tower Ingrid. Leon grins in satisfaction as the lasers open up on the bunkers. Bullseye!

Round One:

The Doomsayer plunges toward the courtyard Raven indicted, firing thrusters to decelerate and turning as it descends for Sverrir to put a burst of Autocannon fire into the rockface where the firing slit is while Hrafn plays a jet of water on the exit from the market, blocking the escape along the road to the caverns.

The Doomsayer comes to a halt and the rear ramp of the APC drops as it hovers while Sigmundr leads his section of raiders out, roaring as they go.

Leon turns the dorsal turret with its twin Pulse Lasers on the spot where the cannon rounds are impacting and activates the weapons. The rock surface smokes and melts, there is the flash of something igniting inside and the ripple of minor explosions as ammunition ignites and black and orange smoke pours from the firing slit.

Ingrid lines the starboard turret's Sandcaster up on the tower and lets fly the canister of anti-laser silicates. The shotgun-like blast scours the beacon, causing damage to the housing and abrading the lenses and tower-top. The installation is not destroyed however.

Ingunn has the Doomsayer lifting off as soon as the last of Sigmundr's raiders clears the exit in her monitor, the ramp closing as she accelerates away toward Raven's next LZ as the remaining raiders move up closer to the exit ramp.

While the majority of the citizenry are in shocked confusion some are obviously moving with purpose. There are a few figures directing the crowd, several others moving toward the building at point 4. Plenty of people are going into buildings rather than flee through the streets.

From the ridgeline above the smoking bunker above point 5 an ATGM streaks out toward the APC, but it seemingly cannot track the vehicle properly, missing behind by several feet and impacting on the roof of a house below.

There are several firing slits and embrasures in the tower to the north-east. From the lower level a flash announces the firing of a gun and the near simultaneous impact on the APC suggests it is a high velocity cannon. The round strikes the front face of the Doomsayer and ricochets away, leaving a dent.

At about the same time a missile launches from a small port higher up the structure, aimed at the Serpent.

On the Bridge Regina shouts Missile! At the same moment the computer pops up a plot of the launch and trajectory on all the Bridge stations. The laser in the starboard turret automatically fires in point-defence mode, but is off target as the turret is trained on the tower top.

The only hope to avoid the impact is a swift manoeuvre by Ridley.

Pilot roll for dodge.

Ridley flips the stern of the Cunning Serpent around, pivoting on the prow, and leads the missile in a long arc ( chasing the heat of the thrusters ) that ends in the mass of rocks west of the temple where it detonates harmlessly. The Serpent's tail swings past the rock edge with mere meters clearance as Ridley completes his 360 rotation.

From the southern end of the rock wall an HMG opens fire from a slit carved in a boulder atop the ridge, red tracer reaching out for the APC as it skims the rooves of the town. The aim is poor and the fire falls short, long bursts failing to catch up to the vehicle and bouncing off the stone slabs used as tiles in crazy patterns.

First round complete.

Next round I believe Sigmundr's group will engage, Ingunn will drop off Raven, and the Serpent will do... things.

Raven releases the harness on her commander's seat and says "Ingunn you are driving well. Use the houses and people as cover. Remember - if you can see the Tower it can see you".

Then she prepares to disembark.

Ingunn doesn't turn her attention from the task of flying the Grav-APC but her delighted smile is reflected in the screen.

Thank-you Raid Leader. It's a treat to fly something with decent avionics. Almost flies itself, all I do is point it in the right direction.

Round Two:

Another anti-tank rocket launches from the ridge-line, from a different point this time, closer to the southern bunker. It too struggles to track the APC as Ingunn dips and weaves anong rooves and chimneys, finally missing above as she drops down into the street Raven has selected to land in. The missile tries to turn and come back, wraps its control wire on chimneys and passes overhead again as the ramp hits the road, on its way to impacting harmlessly on the cliff.

Leon trains the twin lasers on the base of the tower and energises them. The stone walls of the tower are partly vitrified, providing a reflective surface that partly scatters the energy. Nonetheless the flickering pulses of the laser cannon superheat the glass, causing it to slough away from the point of focus, allowing further pulses to tunnel into the stone walls.

Ingrid lowers her aim adds the laser in her turret to the damage Leon is doing while the autoloader makes another canister of Sand ready in the launcher.

( Ship's weapons operate on a different scale to personal/vehicle weapons. Hence Ingrid's Sandcaster being offline. The lasers will create a large breach over several turns of combat on this scale. They are certainly making the lower level unbearably hot and dangerous at the moment )

Sigmundr's group form a line across the road at the edge of the market square, yelling, brandishing weapons and generally looking fierce. Sigmundr points out the entrance to the Town Hall where fighting-age people are heading. Þórir brings up the Auto Grenade Launcher he is carrying and launches a volley of Tear Gas grenades at them. The first one misses short, the round dropping among the stalls and the citizens milling around there, a merchant, his assistant and a panicking young woman caught in the chemical fog. The other two grenades hit the two figures running through the doorway. The cloud of gas that spills out catches the three people behind them and billows through the doors into the building. The two hit stagger but keep running into cover, and the three behind follow them coughing.

As the APC skims the rooftops Sverrir and Hrafn scan the ridge for the missile launchers without finding them. Giving up Sverrir trains the Autocannon on the tower and puts a burst into where the gun that fired at them was as it briefly comes into view, the rounds bursting over the surface around the firing slit.

Ingunn puts the APC down facing the market to let out Raven and her warriors out under cover. Hrafn sees a group of citizens fleeing north toward the cave entrance and turns the watercannon on them, bowling over a man and three women about 10 meters away. The man struggles to get up, trying to drag one of the women with him, as Raven leads her band out of the vehicle toward them. The other two figures lie stunned where they fell, moving feebly. Sverrir's Autocannon menaces the market square and the people who had been heading that way turn and run out of sight to the side.

Another port opens high up on the other side of the tower and a second missile launches. Before it can arm itself Leon's weapons console shows the left eye of the decorative serpent curled around the display glow red and the laser in the port-side turret swivels to burn it down. The missile flares briefly and explodes over the northern edge of the town. He is sure the brief, angry hiss on the Weapons comm channel is not interference.

The HMG in the southern bunker fires again, raking the line Sigmundr's team has formed. They scatter into cover as the .50cal rounds smash into the road and walls among them, and only luck and quick reactions save Yngvildr and Dagný from injury, Dagný sporting a long groove across her Torso Protector as she crouches in the doorway of a house.

The civilians left in the market area are fleeing back east and north, heading for the road past the warehouses. The cloud of Tear Gas forming in the road leading that way discourages many, but some plunge in. A few scatter trying to find other ways to escape, but there are more than twenty milling around in the square unsure which way to turn.

For round three:

Leon and Ingrid are firing at the tower, the Serpent can still move so long as they can maintain LOS.

Sigmundr's team are pinned, but have sealed the street they occupy.

Raven's team are on the ground and ready to act. North of them are four sitting targets, south and east are the people trapped in the market area.

The APC is blocking the northern exit from the market, in cover from the tower and southern bunker but possibly in sight of the un-located ATGM launchers.

Kar trusts Ridley, Leon and the crew to do their jobs, without the need for him to micro manage them.

Ridley, keep us on station and agile, watch those sight lines. Leon, prioritise threats to the assault force.

Kar checks his gear, armour and weapons. Ready to welcome any "guests" when the time comes.

Raven takes in the chaos of the unfolding raid. She then slaps her driver’s shoulder again “Ingunn, tuck in under the houses to keep out of sight of the ridgeline. Engage the Town Hall and suppress the market place”.

She switches channels and asks “Serpent from Raven are you carving a valknut on that tower? Southern bunker engaging us with HMG fire – melt it! Suppressing fire along the ridgeline - infantry in cover engaging us with AT missiles. Move to LZ to accept prisoners!”

To her warband she yells “Out, out! Let us see what we can find”. Bareheaded save for the HUD "patch" over her right eye and carrying her rifle Raven steps out of the APC. Indicating those felled by the water cannon she orders “There, those four – drag them away and throw them in the back!” The knot of easy prisoners was a distraction but to ignore such generosity was to be ungrateful to the gods.

She whispers her invocation because she knows he can hear if he chooses “All Father”.

Then she inhales and listens and deems the carnage nowhere near “ripe” enough. Moving east she turns towards the building line north of her and moving close for maximum effect slips her hand to her rifle’s underbarrel weapon system and then torches the ground floor of the nearest structure.

She then urgently directs her warband eastwards into cover and along the building line pausing both to drive them along and also to place herself at the centre of the line set to sweep southwards through the market and herd the “penned in flock” towards where the Serpent would be.

Leon smiles on hearing the computer hiss... he whispers to the console yes my beauty show them your fangs...now I'm going to direct you via front lasers to the tower. Leon will switch/direct the computer to take out the tower.

To Ridley Hey Ridley your going to have to dodge any missiles that come our way bro, anti air is off line for the moment

Leon switches to the other laser turret to take out the bunker as indicated by Raven. Ingred, leave the tower to Fang...the computer and put suppressing fire along the ridge

Leon takes a look over to Kar sitting calmly and taking the battle in, he catches his eye Just like old times my friend He smiles and now for that bunker...

The Militia, highly motivated and operating from concealed positions, retain the initiative.

The first ATGM position launches a second missile. This one flies in a high trajectory above the town, heading for ( or near to ) the serpent – it doesn't look as though it aimed directly at the ship, but it will pass very close.

Ingrid, having brought up the Autocannon controls on the turret console, announces Spotted 'em! and calls directions for Ridley to bring the nose of the Serpent into position for her shot. The dual 30mm open up and HE rounds explode among the rocks below the ridge line just south of the smoking bunker above the cave entrance. The missile, which had started it's turn toward the Serpent, stops manoeuvring and carries on straight out to sea.

( Lucky shot, Ingrid took out the operator before the missile turned in to strike a penetrating hit on your thrusters )

Leon swings the Pulse Laser of the port turret around remotely and sends the beam of energy directly into the firing slit carved into the rock above him. The interior immediately flares up, smoke pouring from other openings among the boulders.

Ridley extends the landing gear, but keeps the Serpent flying. Hovering just off the ground supported on it's thrusters, nose up so Ingrid can rake the ridge, tail down so Kar and Áshildr can jump down if necessary. The down-blast of the small attitudinal thrusters kicks up dust which brings the sulphurous air of Marduk with it into the ship.

In the doorways of the houses flanking the market entrance Sigmundr's band are preparing their next move when a window in upper level of the northern house opens and a shotgun fires through at Sigmundr on the opposite side. The opening of the window gives him just enough warning to throw himself clear. The blast tears into the door where he had been, tearing away a section of the wood panelling to reveal steel beneath. Sigmundrs burst of return fire sends a couple of rounds into the ceiling of the room, but miss whoever fired.

At the same time a rifle shot rings out from an upper window in the large building at the west end of the street. The 7mm round ricochets off one of the iron bars forming a cage around the window next to Gulbrandr. He raises his ACR and puts a full burst through the window. He is certain he hit his target.

Dagný ignites a smoke grenade and throws it just behind the group, the smoke filling the street leading from the market to the caverns. Þórir reloads his launcher while Yngvildr puts a RAM HE grenade through the window the rifleman who shot at Gulbrandr used. The blast rips through the room, shattering the windows and sending debris flying. Ragnheiðr lobs a Flash-Bang at the southern exit of the market. Her throw is terrible, missing left by some distance and landing among the stalls. It isn't near enough to directly affect anyone, but the noise and light startle the civilians, causing more panicked milling.

To the north Raven's band charge out of the Doomsayer. Rúna and Hróarr, being the first out, run to secure the soaked figures in the road while the others follow Raven along the north side of the market area.

Before Rúna and Hróarr can reach the couple getting to their feet and the two women seemingly still stunned a 7mm firing on full automatic opens up from the attic of the big house directly north of them. The fire sprays across the road, hitting both in the legs, each taking a wound. Rúna is shaken, but Hróarr is furious. They return fire, Rúna letting her boarding axe fall as she kneels swinging up her ACC to send rounds into the area of the skylight while Hróarr keeps moving forward, limping badly and swearing fiercely, putting rounds through the attic window, but too high to hit the shooter.

Hrafn triggers the Water-cannon and raises the jet toward the roof, hosing down the house and breaking windows but failing to hit the skylight.

As the last of the Warband exits the APC a loud report sounds from the upper storey of the house immediately north of the group and a cloud of smoke forms. Someone fired a black-powder rifle at Steinn, the round missing wide. He aims a burst at the window and runs on after Raven.

The flames of the fire Raven set are taking hold in the room beyond the window she broke, smoke billowing through the shattered glass, past the iron bars and up into the dawn sky. The smell of burning furniture mixed with the sulphur stench of Marduk is like the scent of an old friend to Raven. Add some blood and it'll be like meeting an old lover.

As she leads her band along behind the stalls, forming a ragged line, Stáli staggers under the impact of a heavy round in his Torso Protector. The bullet penetrates, grazing his side before getting caught in the ballistic cloth of his armour beside his stomach, the hot metal trapped inside his suit. A second later the crack of the high velocity rifle sounds from the ridge. Stáli and Erlingr duck into cover and scan the ridge but spot nothing. They fire a burst each at the boulder-strewn rock wall anyway.

Bjartr runs ahead of Raven, eager to get among the offworlders. Suddenly he sees one, a woman with a hunting rifle in the ground-floor window of the house directly ahead. She fires, hitting the armour of his right arm without penetrating it, and steps aside out of sight before he can bring his weapon to bear properly, the bullets flying through the open window where she had been.

Ingunn prowls carefully forward and tucks in to the cover of the houses on the NW edge of the market. Sverrir scans for targets, sees nothing in particular, and just sprays the front of the Town Hall, putting rounds over the heads of the crowd. So far over that quiet a few rounds miss the building, flying over it out to sea. Many throw themselves flat for safety, some start crawling away, a few run in terror.

A third missile launches from the tower. All the weapons of the Serpent are engaged, there is only Ridley's ability to dodge it left as defence.

Manfred joins Áshildr. He has his Improved Boarding Vacc Suit on and holds a Gauss Rifle. Grinning through his visor at her he says Thought I'd do some sightseeing while I'm 'ere, 'ave a squint in that Temple.

Several edits:

Added Manfred, changed an action, tidied up text, corrected errors.

Annotated map added.

Raven still has an action, and Kar is on his way to the reception area. Do you propose to load through the APC bay at the front or the Cargo Hold at the rear? Currently the rear is nearest the ground, facing the Temple.

Raven marshals her warband into a line ready to drive the demoralised prey into the Serpent’s maw. She speaks to the ship again “Good shooting Serpent! We are taking accurate sniper fire from the ridge. Stand ready, we will drive across the market and feed the Serpent! Watch for small arms fire from the houses”.

She plans to use the growing smoke and flame from the fire she set to both distract from her troop's movement and also to cover it but she knows timing will be all. She raises her voice “Make ready and wait on my word! We sweep across the market and drive the people before us and into the Serpent. Get in among them and push them on – they are your cover. Smoke grenades to cover our first rush. Grenades ready? Go!”

(OOC: Tactics roll to get into cover of (serially) smoke/hostages/Serpent.

As the missile from the tower streaks in toward the Serpent Ridley tries to manoeuvre out of its path. This time the ship is lower, with less room to operate in. Swinging the nose of the ship back toward the tower to present a smaller target, levelling his attitude and pushing the thrusters to "reverse" he tries to swing SW around the heaped boulders. Close to the ground, hemmed in by rocks and buildings, he just hasn't got the space or time to avoid the thing. It skims past Ingrid's turret and hits midships on the starboard side, the warhead striking the bulge of the fuel tank under the Aerofin.

The impact reverberates through the hull, rattling loose items but undoubtedly smaller than a standard anti-starship missile. Ingrid reports Scorching, no obvious breach. Think we're fine.

Down in Engineering, closer to the impact, the shock is greater, partly because of proximity, partly because it was unexpected. As the ringing sound of the detonation against the hull dies away Remington, Gris and Handson become aware of another ringing noise. A warning siren on some detector has been triggered.

Raven orders the warband (one of them) to also lob a smoke grenade and hurls hers at the open roadway on the warband's right/western flank (as we face south) to cover their first phase of movement.

She prompts Sigmundr "I am moving south now. Close in and drive the sheep into the Serpent - cover your movement with smoke".

Raven's throw makes up in enthusiasm what it lacks in accuracy, the grenade flying further north of the flagpole on its dais than she had intended. The white chemical smoke spills out and begins to drift southward, reaching out toward the grey and black smoke from the nearby burning building.

The people still in the market area are penned in by raiders blocking their escape along the roads to the caves and caverns, tear-gas clouds in the road outside the Town Hall, and the Cunning Serpent landing to the south. Most are cowering in cover, but some make a run for it. Four run to the west, heading for the gap between the houses and the rocks, three dash east aiming to skirt the gas and go south of the Town Hall, and one plunges through the gas trying to flee north. That proves to be a mistake as the gas blinds her and she misses her turn, running into the second, larger, cloud where she runs out of air, inhales and starts coughing.

The four waterlogged citizens in the street north of the market react to the approaching threat differently. The couple have had the fight knocked out of them and clutch each other in fear as Hróarr menaces them, the man shielding the woman. One of the women rolls against the wall and raises her hands, the other gets on all fours, scuttles behind the couple, rises to her feet and runs for it.

EDITED

Now with extra civilians :)

Turn Four immanent. Should be shorter, I hope.

Actions for Ridley, Leon, Kar and Remington?
