Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Would Avaala like to do something different, or just keep listening?
Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Sorry, just noticed that I thought this out without actually posting it.
Avaala the Grey
Avaala tries to simulate the chanting of the Slizards, but makes his way around the obelisk to Cealwyn's position. Once he is there, he kneels over the man and binds his wounds, carefully listening to any comments the Slizards might make about this action. If they seem merely curious, he just keeps going. If it looks to become hostile, he looks at them, points to the injuries and just shrugs. He is counting on his appearance as one of them to carry him a long way as far as tolerance of what might be otherwise odd behavior.
"Watch my back on this, Treasure!" he thinks to his friend.
EDIT: Just to clarify, Avaala will use the lowest level of the Obelisk's platform to stay away from the wriggling, grasping grasses.

The Obelisk
Sunday, 21st of Goodmonth
Late Afternoon, Hot, Humid, Buggy
The blood gushing from Cealwyn's injuries spills across the stone platform, causing incognito Avaala to rush to his aid in the middle of the dangerous battle. Wes also pulls out his club to charge into the melee with Bonnie and Paul. Luther taunts the beast from a safe distance, firing his magic bolts of energy at the monster. Sure he hit with his second shot, the target doesn't seem affected by his sizzling missile this time. Grimm's bolt flies true however, but the tiny projectile is a mere pinprick to the massive jungle behemoth.
Bonnie attempts to climb up on the ugly creature, using the advance of Paul and Wes as a distraction. Ascending its stinking armless side, she tries to get her sword into the things mouth, but the violent thrashing proves difficult to overcome and slows her precarious climb considerably. Can I get a Nearly Impossible Dex roll, please? [6d6]
Paul suddenly becomes the monsters next target after missing with his first attack. Taking a vicious slashing rake from its wicked claws, the young human is suddenly knocked out of the fight as quick as he arrived. 9 dam
Its huge toothy maw snaps around, trying to bite at Bonnie but failing at this endeavor so far.
Chauncey is about to answer the comment from Bonnie, "yes.....well......I was just about to.......", when the shaman slizard motions for 2 of his goons to grab ahold of the mage again before he has a chance to use any more of his delightful magic toys. "Hey! Unhand me you.....things! Dont you know who I am?" Another slizard is commanded to intercept Luther and his dangerous magic bow.
Wes does little to affect the outcome of the battle with his attack, but he does make a nice new target for the one armed brute. Avaala continues listening to the slizards and their chanting as he moves in to save the ranger. Focusing on the shaman shouting out his orders, the wizard hears a few interesting tidbits of information. "I know it isss not our way to interfere, but that orange mage with the magic ssstick mussst be contained! One of you go intercccept that other man asss well. Boar-ussss mussst be protected ssso he can continue to protect the gateway.......and USSS!" Avaala reaches Cealwyn and pulls him away from the huge stomping feet of the monster as he staunches the worst of his badly leaking wounds, likely saving the mans life. As he works, the grey mage sees red letters forming a sentence or two across the face of the plaque affixed to the glowing obelisk. His strange dragon friend thinks back. "Do you want me to get closer to you or stay with Grimm?"

Avaala the Grey
"You had better camouflage yourself and join me," thinks Avaala to Treasure. "Things are getting a bit dicey, and I would prefer to have your resistance to enchantments with me." The Mage, having used the full extent of his healing skills on Cealwyn, moves over to Paul and tries to staunch his bleeding as well, wishing he knew more about these arts. He tries to make sure neither of his patients gets stepped on.

Re: Quest #29 “Raiders of the Lost Obelisk”
Cealwyn Blackthorn
Warm sun shines down on the young man's back and birdsong hums in his ears. He bends his back to the plow and clucks to the pair of long-horned oxen walking placidly ahead. "Walk on, boys," he calls softly. "Walk on. Come by, Tom. Come by." He drives them expertly, smiling through the film of dust covering his sun-browned face.
They pull slowly but surely, their broad backs rippling with muscle. Their young drover, a strong lad of fifteen summers, has learned every word of their softly-spoken language and the meaning behind each flick of the tail and toss of the head. He's learned when to duck the massive horns and how to sidestep a hard kick or move his foot before a hard stomp smashes it.
His rows aren't perfect, but each furrow is straighter than the last. The boy's grandfather, a weather-beaten man in his mid-fifties, watches from the edge of the long, narrow field and nods his approval. "Take a break, lad. Once you finish that row, come sit in the shade and have a drink. We'll let the boys graze."
Young Cealwyn does as he's told and joins his grandfather in the shade of a spreading oak. He smiles and accepts a gourd full of cold water, then tips it back and drains it with a thirsty gulp.
"Easy, boy," the older man cautions with a chuckle. "Don't make yourself sick." He looks over the day's progress and nods at Cealwyn.
The boy grins back, but his grin fades as the face of his grandfather flickers, then smooths and hardens into the shape of the gleaming obelisk. It thrusts up and through and shadetree until it casts a dark shadow on the fields and forests surrounding their farm.
It fills his view and the lad cries out, reaching out to push the vile apparition away, but he falls through the now-transparent ground. He grabs at the endlessly plunging obelisk, but his fingertips slide over the smooth surface and find no purchase.
The world swims in a black haze around him, and Cealwyn finda himself adrift. He surrenders to nothingness.

Luther
Luther's hackles are raised and the hair on his arms stands up. His eyes shine that odd yellow. He draws his sword as the slizzard approaches. You ruttin' Scalies wanna dance? Let's dance!
He slashes the air as the creature approaches.

Wes
Now that he has succeeded in distracting the beast, allowing someone to aid the two fallen men, Wes considers his own predicament. He's no warrior and his own small club is unlikely to beat the creature down. Probably time to try and get out of there.
He backs away from the one-armed horror and begins to cast a spell, hoping to fill the air around him with dense fog.
Casting Obscurement. Creates a 40' cube of misty vapors around the druid. Reduces visibility to 2-8'.

The Obelisk

Wes dodges one mighty claw before deciding to back away from the action. He starts casting a spell that will bring forth a misty vapor to surround him. I can’t tell what “backs away” means regarding AoE. Are you trying to encompass everyone?
Grimm plunks another bolt into the thick hide of this strange jungle beast while Luther draws his sword. The slizard raises a stone club to the big bear, but does not attack. In fact, the scaly humanoid looks downright frightened, and rather uncomfortable wielding the crude weapon.
Once Avaala has Cealwyn buttoned up, he turns his attention to Paul, informing Treasure mentally to get a little closer. Unfortunately for the aspiring ranger, his situation is about to get much worse.
Bonnie can’t let go of her grip on the monster long enough to get her sword into play, slipping and falling after a violent jostling from the beast. She does manage to grab onto a tuft of hair growing wildly from its left ear, using it to swing safely to the ground again. The hair pulling causes the monster to spin sideways until she lets go, eliminating its biting attack, but also causing it to inadvertently kick Paul’s poor limp body clear off the platform. He dies there in the dirt, his red shirt now covered in his own blood.
Chauncey continues to struggle against the pair of slizards holding him. “Unhand me, fools! I mean you no harm! My friends! It is obvious that these green chaps aren’t out to hurt us, or that already would have! They seem far more concerned about this glowing obelisk Bonnie just activated. If we can only eliminate this big one, I believe it would aid both us and them.”

No, not trying to change the AoE. It was just a throwaway comment. He's only moving a couple of steps. I figured if he really tried to withdraw from combat, the monster would get a bonus to hit him.

Grimm not knowing what to do other than keep firing, shots another bolt.
Light Crosbow - To hit: [1d20+1] = 5+1 = 6 (DEX adj.); Dmg: S/M/L [1d4] = 2
But, for some reason, he mistook a tree for the beast.

Avaala the Grey
Avaala gasps as Paul is basically kicked out of his hands. Seeing the blood burst from his mouth and hearing the snapping of ribs, the Mage drops his head for a moment in grief. But he spares only a half second for the dead, quickly returning to Cealwyn and pulling him away, making sure that he doesn't also die needlessly.
