Our tabletop group recently started playing 5e for the first time. Coming from 2e, the ubiquitousness of crossbows felt weird.

We're playing the Lost Mines of Phandelver. In the initial encounters, crossbows werr being exchanged willy-nilly. "You don't have a missile weapon? Here, take my crossbow." Then when we hit town, the first thing we bought were crossbows for everyone.

The real world part of my brain was fine with this. But the DND part was aghast at the idea of magic users and clerics using them. I think it adds to the 'easy-to-use' appeal of 5e, but feel that it makes it a bit bland too. (The rest of the group seem to like 5e. I'm more "Well, it's nice but...")

5e is bit different for sure, not horrible but different. I like to think of it as a fantasy superhero game, or at least that is how it feels to me.

I haven't really experienced any of the Editions after 1st. I've scanned through some of the books, and my personal opinion is that everything since 1st seems to be a reaction to videogames. The corporation trying to stay relevant and keep up with the popularity of other forms of gaming. Of course, I'm a 60-year-old grognard.
There also seems to be a certain amount of self-inflicted 'arms race'; a new subclass comes out, and people who prefer a different class want something new and cool, so the company turns out 'something new and cool'... which starts the cycle again.

A friend had me over for a few sessions of 3.5. I know that was very popular, but it just seemed to complicated, and yes, too video-gamey. It was OK, once I had a 1 or 2 dozen hours under my belt, but it could never replace my beloved 1st Edition.

I much prefer 1e, Holmes and HarnMaster for fantasy but among those I play FTF with the preferred games are HarnMaster and 5e so I run HarnMaster and my Godson runs 5e.

I run 2e for a group of friends (we resumed our campaign this week after two years hiatus) and another campaign on holidays for another group of friends, although they overlap. For my girlfriend I run a solo on BECMI although the campaign has been on hold for a while too. Those and OD&D + supplements are my goto systems. 1e, of course, I like too. They're all pretty similar. The big change comes with 3e.

I'm a player in a 5e group, too. The underlying system is straightforward and logical, but characters are too superhero-like. Too over the top in terms of magics and powers for my taste.

I guess I like it all to some degree or other...but...and this is a big but. I don't run in-person games other than 3LBB OD&D. It's my favorite and all I care to run.

I run 1e online just because it's easier to find people who will play. 0e is seen as either too simplistic or too arcane. It's neither, but you can't convince people of this.

I will play whatever is being run. But I def prefer my old games.

I think I agree with everything mentioned so far. :D

Not a big fan of 5E, for most of the reasons mentioned. If I want to play a video game, where all the characters are super heroes, I will.

Having separated from the others to the back of the camp (that would be the side of the camp opposite the front flap of the tent), Dex has a very careful look around, checking with normal and infra-vision, both high and low, for any sentries that may be waiting. He keeps his movements quiet and continues to use the leaves in his clothes to break up his outline. If he makes it all the way to the tent without seeing anyone, he carefully listens at it.

Boy, I hope I'm checking against an Ability Score.
Don't worry. It probably just means you get first choice of all the sweet magic items inside the tent! :D

That would be nice! Dex has made some money, but not a single magic item yet.

I am heading into the woods for some much needed camping/hunting. This will be through the 25th and every weekend through mid-December. I will update as more weekdays get added later on. I may be able to check in once or twice depending on how things go but don't count on it. Feel free to NPC my character so I don't slow things down.
Thanks and good gaming,
Rex

Every time I see a new quest starting I think something like "Damn, I'd like so much to be in that one!" But... time
