Hearing nothing from the other side, Gruuthuk opens the door in the northern wall from the room with the chanting goblins and peers upon an open hallway to the left, leading back to the main north/south passage, and a door just off to the right, presumably leading back into the chamber the others are beginning to explore --

Bugbear
"Come in," the hulking bugbear says in a tone that is only slightly menacing; waving Nella inside.


With Unari, Xanlanan, and Jacxor taking positions in the shadows back in the entry corridor; Nella approaches the inviting bugbear with confidence, but an equal amount of caution. "I am the Baronness Nella, or the Honorable Lady Ghent, should you prefer, and this is my --"

Before the lady noble has an opportunity to complete her introduction of Lika, trailing closely behind her, a pair of bugbears lurking just inside the entrance jump out and attempt to surprise the pair.

Attempt, badly. The seemingly always aware monk easily detects and thwarts the devious intentions of the monstrosities.

While safe from immediate attack, the baroness does find herself almost immediately surrounded by a trio of large, menacing bugbears!

As the other bugbears emerge with malice aforethought, the Baroness clicks her tongue. "Well... That's disappointing,"
she says with droll tone, her longsword flashing into her hand. She holds her position, keeping herself between them and Lika, hoping the arrows fly from behind to their aid.

Her corsets and skirts provide no impediment as she springs into movement. A slash to one, a flying kick spinning onto the next. An elbow strikes a pommel interception of an incoming blow.... She is everywhere in that moment...

Yikes! That flat-footed rule may kill me in round 1. :shock:

Quite ready to sit and enjoy some wine, Lika is very slow to react to the extra dinner guests.

Initiative: [1d20+2] = 4+2 = 6

He moves north ten feet and twirls her arm in a circular motion while pointing at bugbear the red. A low, unearthly, hoot escapes from his beak while two bright orange beams of energy burst forth, twisting upon each other in a spiral of death. He chooses to put a little something extra into the blast, as a stream of feathers follows each beam, forcing the bugbear back.

Eldritch Blast: [1d20+6] = 12+6 = 18 Damage: [1d10+3] = 9+3 = 12
Eldritch Blast: [1d20+6] = 11+6 = 17 Damage: [1d10+3] = 8+3 = 11
Using repelling blast to knock the red bugbear back 10 ft for each hit.

If Needed: [1d20] = 11

Approaching the door, he carefully opens it and sees the hostile bugbears. He will hide (Cunning Action: bonus action Hide) behind the door before popping out just long enough to fire an arrow at one of the bugbears (blue) next to Nella before ducking back behind the door.

Round 1
The bugbears look to make quick work of Nella but the baroness proves to be too nimble for the first two morningstar attacks made against her, but does feel some piercing pain as the final attack levied against her finds purchase (-9).

Gruuthuk hastily lets loose an arrow that errantly zips past the head of the bugbear furthest away from Nella. The assassin ducks back out of view before being noticed.

A second arrow, this one from Unari, zips past the grouping of melee combatants managing to strike only the far wall.

Xanlanan, from back in the hallway, tosses a mote of fire at the bugbear nearest the corner (green), briefly setting the beasts fur on fire... and definitely capturing its attention!

"Well... That's disappointing," Nella says with droll tone, her longsword flashing into her hand. Keeping herself between them and Lika, the baroness quickly slashes at the bugbear to her left, then leaps into a flying roundhouse kick to the bugbear to her right. Both attacks connect against the hide armor of the beasts but don't seem to be damaging. The monk immediately blasts into a flurry of blows, launching an elbow and her palm against nearby targets but, again, failing to connect in any meaningful way. Recognizing the peril of her situation, she crouches and holds her longsword in front of herself defensively.

The beast ultimately ends up crashing against the far wall, and weakly stumbles back to its feet, clearly stunned by the impressive series of magical attacks hurled in its direction.

Facing down both bugbears, that Baronness's ornate longsword goes snickersnack, deflecting blows. She glances her longsword off the thick hides, thudding ineffectually as she tries to sweep a leg, and huffing in frustration as her palm strike is knocked away. With intense focus, she spins to the left and performs a throat strike on the (blue) bugbear, leaving him gagging for air. (Critical hit, double damage of 18? Save for Stunning Strike)

Attack: Longsword [1d20+6] = 9+6 = 15[1d8+3] = 2+3 = 5 Unarmed [1d20+6] = 5+6 = 11[1d6+3] = 5+3 = 8

Lika shakes her head as the time for pleasantries obviously came to a crashing end.

Again he circles her hands and points at the bugbear he shoved against the wall. Again the feathers fly with the orange bolts.

The bugbear assassin comes out of hiding just long enough to fire an arrow at one of the bugbears (blue) before ducking back behind the door again (bonus action: hide).

Round 2
"You fools!" one of the bugbears taunts in crude common. "We just toy with you. We really start fight... now!" Their actions can't live up to their words, however, as they all fail to connect in a meaningful way with any of their attacks.

Gruuthuk momentarily flashes out from his place of concealment; just long enough to stick the nearest bugbear with an arrow before falling back into his hiding place and out of sight. "Owww!" the bugbear howls. "Who did that?" it bellows.

Using her ranger skills, Unari marks the bugbear directly in front of her before stepping forward and piercing the beast with her rapier. The creature howls in pain before collapsing, dead.

A mote of flame, fired by Xanlanan, floats into the corner of the room where a bugbear was previously forced into, but the beast vacated that area just in time to avoid being struck.

Facing down both bugbears, Nella glances her longsword off their thick hides, then sweeps her leg which her foe is able to deftly leap over. She huffs in frustration as her palm strike is also knocked aside, but with intense focus, she spins to reposition herself and performs a throat strike, collapsing it. It tumbles over, gripping its throat as it gasps for air, before ultimately expiring.

Shaking her head in frustration, Lika sends the final bugbear flying backward. After coming to a crashing stop, the beast doesn't move.

With the threat eliminated, a closer inspection of the room reveals the remains of a shattered statue in the middle of the room, with fist-sized chunks of black stone lying around an oval base. Three large piles of rags and torn cushions make up what appear to be makeshift beds for the slain adversaries.

In addition to the nasty hide armor and morning stars they each possess, the group is able to recover 27 gold coins, 16 silver, and 18 copper pieces.


There are no other visible exits.

It's possible that you divide up the treasure and everyone adds treasure taken to their character sheets on the go, but if the group wants to just keep a running total of all "group" treasure, I'm going to ask that one of you track those details.

Is there light in this chamber besides my lantern?

As the last bugbear drops, Baronness Nella relaxes her stance. She wipes her blade carefully and then sighs as she fixes her hair. "It really is too bad. They could have been quite helpful in understanding our surrounds. C'est la vie." She picks up the previously-offered bottle of wine and extends it now to Lika. "Here you are, if you wish to do the honors. Might as well celebrate a victory, hmmm?" Looking to the others, she asks, "Is everyone else okay, then?"

Action #1
After a cursory review of the others, she acquiesces that she herself is not, in fact, okay. She pulls a a well-maintained physician's kit from her pack and works with deft hands to cleanse, stitch, and bandage the wound which the bugbears gave her.
Healer feat recovers 1d6+4+patient's HD. So that's a minimum of 10 and she has 9 damage, so I'll not bother with the roll and take full HP.
If Lika opens the bottle, the Baronness is happy to take part in a libation as well.

Action #2
Nella then regards the chamber - does its architecture and accoutrements hint of previous purpose? Of the style of the current occupants?

She then paces around the statue in contemplation, applying her studious mind and keen eye for insights.
Rolling perception in case it is a noticing thing and history in case it is about interpretation. With Artist's Tools training, I'm hoping to apply her studies of sculpture and art to gain advantage on the roll.

"Does anyone need a rest before we continue on?"
(Short rest time? Or press forward? It would restore my Ki points and my Healer feat, which would be helpful but is not dire. I'm not sure if others have needs.)
