Greetings

#1 Post by Zhym »

Hi all.

Just came across this board (and read through both Tomb of Horrors party threads...hoo boy, that's gonna be some fun).

I played a bit more years ago than I'll admit. I'm interested in 1e and 2e games.

Welcome Zhym! I believe your in the same boat as most of us regarding how long ago we played. :)

But 1E and 2E are pretty well represented here so hopefully you find a game that feels comfortable soon!

Be well,
--Ron--
This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.
Alethan: I'm good with NOT pressing our luck this time.
mjulius: That's how I know I'm home.
Pulpatoon: The whole point of PbP is to take the scheduling pressure off the game. We're just chatty because we're so eager!
Scott308: ...everyone should be reminded of just how wonderful the people they play games with here can be in real life.
Leitz: Quality and quantity wise, I think US is the best I've seen.
Paladin: I can promise terror, glory, and riches...or a quick and brutal death.
Inferno: Come on! That's was Vicar's Head, a completely different doomed village!
Rex: I can move to the wait list to let someone else into the game.

Welcome Zhym. As rredmond said, there are a lot of us who played "back in the day". :)

I'll never forget after my first AD&D group separated during high school (new priorities, you know ;) ) I looked at my 1e rule books and thought, "I will always be able to play this game if I can find people willing to. It doesn't matter what new games are developed or how old I am, the rules will still work."

Thanks, everyone.

I guess I should add (although it might be obvious from the fact that I haven't played in years) that PbP gaming is new to me. I played table games back in junior high and high school—munchkin fests, all of them—and online via chat system back in the '90s when people still called them "CB simulators." Does anyone here remember BIX? There were some great games run on there. I haven't played play-by-email, much less the old play by snail mail (I can only imagine what those games were like), either. Hopefully the slow mode gaming won't be an issue.

I did look around for some virtual tabletop gaming, but most of them seem to be 3.5e or 4e, which I never got into.

I've done some of the classics. Tomb of Horrors, though we must have played it wrong because
we actually fought Acererak. The real one.
I've played Ravenloft, the original, with a great group and a great DM. A buddy in junior high school ran me solo through a bit of Expedition to the Barrier Peaks (in retrospect, that's not a bad module for a munchkin). I also played a little Gamma World and not nearly enough Paranoia. If anyone wants to get a Paranoia game going, I'm in.

But I haven't played most of the classic old modules.

One question - I see there's a thread for people looking for players, but I don't see an easy way to tell which are still open to new players (or have open waiting lists) and which don't. Is there a way to do that other than reading through the threads?

Zhym,

If you look at the title of each LFP/LFG thread, you'll see that many of the more recent ones have adopted a technique of adding the recruitment status at the end of the title.

Examples:
- AQuebman's DCC Campaign (OPEN 24/7)
- The Allathurion Chronicle - STATUS: CLOSED (WAITING LIST)
- The Inn of the Unseen Servant - Greyhawk 591 2e OPEN

That should give you a good indication of the status of at least half of the more recent game threads. For the others, you'll just have to read through to find out. Usually just skipping to the last page will give you the information you seek.

Cheers,

Al

Welcome Zhym.

Good grief! There was online voice chat technology in the 90's? Private internet hadn't even arrived in my country back then!

What Alethan said. When vacancies come up GMs usually do an update on their recruitment thread and change the [CLOSED] descriptor to [OPEN AGAIN] or something along those lines. If such an update happens you will see it if your use the "view new posts" or "view unread posts" buttons.

No, not voice. :) It was real-time multi-user text chat on a fairly large-scale BBS-type system. It was new enough (or not far enough removed from the '70s) that the closest analogy they could come up with was CB radio. It did work really nicely for games, though.

Welcome, hope you like it here.
The Inn of the Unseen Servant - 2E game needs one.
Maybe two, poor Nayman.
Sorry about that curse I put on your character, Vargr.

Thanks to you both.

I'm not that much of a fan of AD&D 2.5e, I'm afraid. Ironically, the only 2e sourcebook I have is the one you aren't allowing: Psionics. Not that I blame you. Psionics are pretty out there.

As for DCC: I've never played. I'll have to take a look at it.

Welcome Zhym. I had not played PbP before either, but have found the pace and style enjoyable. It promotes role playing and character development. To inquire about wait lists its also effective to just Private Message the DM to inquire.

Aye, forged of dwarven steel in the smithies of Erebor. When I came back to gaming a year ago I splurged and bought them. See http://www.shapeways.com/model/126266/t ... cader.html. They are actually well balanced, made by this special 3D "printing" process by Shapeway.
