Jacxor- Listening to Lika. I shall move back towards the larger room. He then thinks. Maybe we should search for secret rooms? He begins searching the room/

Lika

Lika looks around the room in thought. "Good. Looks like we've found a quiet place. It's better than a nest of vipers." Her gaze drifts to the ceiling and he laments the closeness of it.

"So, I must admit, I don't know much about this place. Does anyone know of it? What it is for, or characteristics? It's full of secret passages, or the walls shift at times? Things like that."

If the searches find nothing, Lika lingers until someone else moves back into the cramped corridor.

If Needed: [1d20] = 13

"I studied what is known, of course," replies Baroness Nella as she patiently examines every surface of the chamber with the lantern, "but I do hope that by our endeavors we will certainly know more, soon enough... expanding the knowledge of this place is the enjoyable part of this experience."
Waiting for the DM to say what she knows, and what we can tell by viewing where we are. :)

She continues, "A secureable location for camp and rest is good to have, if nothing else is of interest here. But as this doesn't represent a route back to safety nor the surface, both discovery and security lie ahead of us, not here behind."

I've heard there is great treasure and magic to be found, but it's very dangerous. There wouldn't be anything worth searching for if it wasn't dangerous; someone else would have already gotten it. Many come down here, few return, and money can be made betting on who those few will be. Other than that... he shrugs, I don't know.

Dungeon Level 1
While Unari is less confident; Jacxor, Lika, and Nella all thoroughly search the chamber and conclude that it is, in fact, a bit of a secluded area with no other exits. The air in the area is cold and a bit dank.

Nella, the attentive baroness, notes that the walls and floors of the area are constructed of gray granite and are very solid. The floors, for the most part, have been smooth while the walls and ceilings have been more rough-hewn. It is also noted that the ceiling of the passage leading into the chamber was roughly 10-feet high and arched, while the ceiling in the chamber is roughly twice as high rising to a height of an estimated 20-feet (which is especially refreshing for Lika who feels capable of spreading his wings in the more open area).

As for what is known of Undermountain, the group collectively is aware that --

The massive underground construct is the creation of Halaster Blackcloak, a powerful wizard, and is over a thousand years old. Most of what is known is just rumors, but one thing known for certain is that Undermountain is constantly in flux. Areas previously explored or cleared out quickly become replenished as something else moves in to take the place of the previous occupants. Sometimes that these new occupants are creatures looking for a new home, and sometimes Halaster himself is rumored to have restocking the dungeon like a farmer refilling the chicken coop after a fox has gotten in and killed his old chickens.

The dungeon is older than Waterdeep itself, and it's common knowledge that previous rulers in Waterdeep would send criminals into the endless depths as punishment. At least until Durnan, an intrepid adventurer, delved into the labyrinth beneath the tower and returned alive, laden with riches and countless harrowing tales. Durnan used his new fortune to demolish the remnants of Halaster’s tower and built an inn over the well he had used to descend into Undermountain, and call it the Yawning Portal. Durnan owns and operates the inn and tavern to this day, serving patrons and inviting the brave and foolish alike to test their mettle in the Dungeon of the Mad Mage.

Using his underground complex as a base of operations, Halaster traveled to other planes and distant lands, collecting strange and dangerous creatures to live as prisoners, servants, or guardians in Undermountain. Populating and defending the dungeon became an obsession and many believe the old wizard has gone mad.

Halaster himself is still rumored to reside in the lowest depths of dungeon -- at least 20 levels deep, but likely more. It is thought that he continues to tunnel ever downward, indulging his inexplicable compulsion for delving deeper and deeper into the mountain.

As for the dungeon and its depths, it is rumored that, in addition to stairways, Halaster is believed to have created magical gates that allow instant travel between levels of the dungeon; and possibly into and out of Undermountain itself, which he uses primarily to restock the dungeon with monsters. Opening a gate in Undermountain usually requires a special key, the casting of a spell, or some other act.

Information about the dungeon -- and especially details about the existing gates -- is highly sought after and survivors able to share details can expect to be handsomely rewarded.

This, in addition to the many, many treasures thought to available in its depths.

Thus, the popularity and allure of the dungeon.

"Bah! There's nothing here except the junk others left behind," Gruuthuk grunts in frustration as he continues to kick through the detrius; managing only to shuffle the content around and not revealing anything new of interest. "At least it looks like a place to rest if we need one later," the bugbear adds.

Since the only means of progress seems to involve doubling back in the direction from which they came, the group shuffles their positions as they reverse direction with Jacxor once again assuming the lead. The wood elf turns the corner the group was originally deposited into and begins to explore the southern passage. Still with the arched, 10-foot tall ceilings.

This scouting only covers a short distance, however, as the first side passage, which turns back east, exists a short 10- to 15-feet south of the original passage explored:
Alcoves.jpg
Alcoves.jpg (110.14 KiB) Viewed 3779 times

Alcoves or niches, each 3-feet deep, line the north and south walls of this first side passage. While the other alcoves may offer the same, Jacxor, from his position in the main north-south hallway, spots, mounted on the back wall of the closest niche on the right, or south, wall, what appears to be a large, oval glass mirror set into a heavy stone frame.

"Curious and curiouser," says The Baroness at the hall of mirrors, her interest now piqued. She was mildly disappointed at the starting chamber, but now shines her lantern as far as she can down the hallway.

"I believe, from my readings on the Mad Mage Halaster, that all things here are made with purpose and we should suspect the nefarious. I doubt this is a powder room." She smirks at her own jest, then turns to the others strung behind.

As Unari recommends a cursory look down each hallway, the Baroness demures. "Yes, wise enough. Ensure we have no living threats, then explore the curious constructions." She makes way for Unari to pass forward and take the look.

As that happens, she adds, "I'd like to ascertain what lies at the corridor's end, and also not have us spring traps needlessly. Can any of us ascertain if these mirrors and accoutrements are magical or mundanely trapped?"

Shining her lantern to help at the entrance to the first corridor, she also lends her own key eye to discerning any features, concerns, engravings, and the like. She does so without stepping in front of the mirror directly, at least until other experts have done due diligence. She will, however, shine the lantern upon the first mirror at an angle and see what it reveals of the next alcove.

Edited: Unari and I cross-posted. I updated to incorporate her post.

Lika

Leaving the larger area behind, Lika furls her wings and follows the others. Upon talk of mirrors, he chirps a bit and seems excited. "Mirrors? Here? A good sign, I'd say. Most unintelligent things have no need of mirrors. Maybe there is someone nearby."

He listens to the caution tales of the group and eases forward until she is able to see down the south corridor.

Dungeon Level 1
"We should at least look down the next two passageways before messing with the mirror," Unari suggests. "Mirrors," Nella corrects after spotting a mirror in the second southern niche, as well as the first three alcoves on the northern side of the corridor, after carefully using her lantern at different angles to explore as much as possible down this first side passage.

No other distinguishing features or markings are found in the hallways themselves, but the baroness does believe there is a set of stairs heading down just beyond the eight pairs of alcoves, with possible columns existing in the recessed area:
Mirrors.jpg
Mirrors.jpg (23.47 KiB) Viewed 3762 times

Jacxor, looking to get a read on what exists down the remaining known side passages creeps further south.

With the corridor lined with alcoves and mirrors being the first side passage, Jacxor peers around the corner of the second 10-foot wide side passage revealing that it briefly turns to the north before continuing east. This second side passage terminates at a door maybe 50-feet distant, with a second door in the southern wall. No details about either door can be determined from his spot in the main southern hallway, but both are closed:
Second Passage.jpg
Second Passage.jpg (43.08 KiB) Viewed 3762 times

Continuing south and peering down the third side passage reveals a door in the southern wall maybe 25-feet in, with an open hallway to the north just beyond it. This third side passage appears to possibly open into another open chamber at its end. It's impossible to tell the exact cause, but the faint sound of a few light thuds or footfalls or objects being moved around can be heard from somewhere down this third side passage:
Third Passage.jpg
Third Passage.jpg (45.67 KiB) Viewed 3762 times

Additionally, this main southern passage ends with a closed door on the eastern wall.

Assuming Jacxor reports back his findings, Baroness Nella follows the plan of investigating the footfalls on corridor #3 before advancing with the mirrors. She motions to go quietly, if we can sneak up on them, again with a whisper to 'expect the nefarious.'

She is willing to resume her place at the front of the marching order, but points to the lantern as a bit of a giveaway. She also is willing to stay back at the mirrors with Lika, allowing any or all of the others to advance with darkvision.

She will reiterate her request for someone who can check for magic or traps before stepping past a mirror in the hallway, in any case.
With an assassin, two rangers, a monk, and two casters, it doesn't appear we have anyone with loud armor. Is that correct?
Edit: Yes... Looks like everyone has Studded Leather or nothing. :)

Lika makes a face at Nella. A smile, perhaps? "Looks like the mirrors will have to wait. That doorway to the south in the second hall intrigues me, but let's not split up quite yet."

Lika takes her place in line and follows as quietly as he can.

With Lika's decision to press ahead, Nella nods and brings the light along for the two of them and resumes her place in line. She partially shutters the lantern, guiding it's exposure with care to ensure they don't reveal themselves too early, or before Jaxcor's guidance. She lends her sharp eye to their search for the source of footfalls...

Dungeon Level 1
The group, at least temporarily, passes on the hallway with the alcoves and mirrors in order to investigate and secure the opened area down the last side passage discovered by Jacxor so far.

Assembling in order, with Jacxor leading the way, the group cautiously makes its way down the third passage with a closed door in the southern wall maybe 25-feet in, with an open hallway to the north just beyond it and a potential chamber developing at its end:

As the ranger scout leads the progress down the side passage, a chant becomes increasingly more audible as he approaches the corner of the open hallway to his left, heading north:

"Nimraith!"
"Nimraith!"
"Nimraith!"

While he doesn't understand their language, Jacxor is confident the chanting is being done by goblins. Peeking around the corner of the open hallway confirms it as at least four goblins can be seen, seemingly distracted by something inside the room they occupy.

The goblins do not catch notice of the party's arrival.

Actions? Movement? Initiative? Plus, an "as needed" roll, mentioned below.

Also, going forward, I would like everyone to supply an unmodified "if needed" 1d20 roll with each response in the game. I do this in my other games and find it's very helpful.

Watch Schedule
Watch: Armored
Sleep: No medium or heavy armor unless specifically declared.
Sleeping in Armor
Sleeping in light armor has no adverse effect on the wearer, but sleeping in medium or heavy armor makes it difficult to recover fully during a long rest.

When you finish a long rest during which you slept in medium or heavy armor, you regain only one quarter of your spent Hit Dice (minimum of one die). If you have any levels of exhaustion, the rest doesn’t reduce your exhaustion level.

Re: Dungeon Level 1

#40 Post by Marullus »

Nella shifts back against the wall to her right, signalling the others and making room for the others to pass her and get into position. She is careful to shield her lantern's light since they have surprise, arranging it on the floor at her feet and readying her longbow.

Once the others are ready, she will flip open the shutter to illuminate the room and shoot the rearmost two goblins she can see.

On her initiative:
Move - along wall, to have clear view into room
Interaction - open lantern
Bonus action - Kensai Shot
Action - shoot twice

Initiative [1d20+3] = 16+3 = 19
Longbow shot: [1d20+6] = 19+6 = 25 damage [1d8+3] = 8+3 = 11[1d4] = 4
Longbow shot: [1d20+6] = 13+6 = 19 damage [1d8+3] = 2+3 = 5[1d4] = 2
Just in case [1d20] = 9
