The senior nurse replies "We are all volunteers here and give our time as we can. Some of the better off folks contribute with supplies but we are on Inchin and so there are some things we just can't get. Also Colonel Perron of the Guard is a kind man and a generous benefactor. However, there is a deal of need and the violence on top of everyday healthcare is stretching what little we have far too thin. We have replenished our basics since the trader got in but you can see what it's like out there - I fear the worst".

Those look like combat injuries or accidents at work/play?

Jess has seen enough to know these are injuries from a way over the top and/or "unprofessional" beating resulting in life threatening injuries. Broadly a difficult state to achieve deliberately but easy enough via "reckless endangerment".

She adds "Findin' folks here is easy inf'n they want to be found. I don't know the name so you have two options: use any "special friends" you may have here" she glances at the group of Jugend at the door "or ask the Guard. I'm strictly neutral but one of those choices is likely to cause everyone 'round here much less bother".

Yeah, the aitch-two's tight for us an' all. Following her flick of the eyes to the Jugend and listening to her advice: Guard seems fine fer supply though. maybe I c'n siphon some off. Doubt they'll give us any, we had a moment earlier, could have been worse, likely won't get better. Thanks fer the advice, hope the meds help. T'be honest, I'm only passin' 'em on, they're a gift from a new acquaintance. Haven't had time ter check 'em, reckon yer oughta. Look sealed, but yer never know. I'd hate ter be used ter palm off dodgy meds, create a provocation.

Jess gives a meaningful look, hoping the nurse understands what she is, and is not, saying.

Frank looks a little surprised at the lack of reaction

"OK, so the guy in the torture video is Urvash Gudrun. The militant guy here is Urvash Gudrun. The Urvash Gudrun in the torture video warned his captors that an elite Zhodani force was coming for him. We never saw him actually die. Sometime between me seeing that recording and it arriving at the Navy Intelligence Service the audio was scrubbed. I don't believe in coincidences. I've assumed that the sensor anomalies seen by the captain was the hidden imperial asset, but now I'm thinking it was Zhodani. I assumed that it was the imperial faction that sent The Star away so it's asset could slip through, but now I'm not sure. The Deputy Minister said it was not his idea to send The Star away, so I think there is a Zhodani operative here with the Baron's ear. Does anyone know about psionics? How close do they need to be to read minds? Should we be wearing our helmets with psionic shielding! "

Jakob's face went blank. He stared for a few moments, and then looked around the room. After a moment he sighed, took a deep breath, and stood a little straighter. His helm got put back on and sealed. The psi-shield was active.

"There was absolutely no psionic activity during the Lanth campaign," he said. His face stayed blank and his voice was monotone. "However, we were instructed to devise protocols, Purely as a training exercise. Of course, there was absolutely no psionic activity during the Lanth campaign."

He looked at everyone, just for a moment, and then shrugged. His message was clear.

"Some of those hypothetical protocols included continuous wearing of the shields. It also meant distant travel for briefing non-shielded personnel, and a 'double or better' confirmation requirement for any significant orders. In this case, an order is significant if the person being ordered feels it is outside mission parameters, outside the commander's intent, or just outside what they think should be done. They have a right to demand a second command staff, who is shielded, to confirm the order. Anything involving expenditure of munitions outside of self-defense is a 'triple-confirm only' action."

"Another hypothetical protocol is increased munitions control; and much more secure weapons handling. Blade usage got pretty high, too, since it's much harder to manipulate remotely." He looked at Frank. "I can write up some more, but we need to get as many people shielded as we can, and the Tech team needs to figure out how to shield our quarters and vehicles. Distance is nice; it takes a stronger psion to reach further. Of course, as we split up, that makes their job even tougher, and that's a good thing."

He turned to Frank. "Right now, sir, I need a spare shield and the keys to one of our vehicles, There's a cute ensign I need to read in on this, and showing off our cool transport is a great way to impress a Navy puke. Okay?"

Frank looks like he is having a bad day

"OK, things just got frelling inconvenient. At least we paid for psionic shielding for all the troops armour, worth every credit. We are going to need to have a strict need-to-know policy on sensitive info, and meeting like this will have to be taken suited and over laser-comms, there is no point doing things by half any more, although I don't fancy walking around in combat armour all day, but we might have no choice. Can you be mind read while asleep? Once you return from your meeting with the ensign we are going to have to sit down and work out some protocols for the rest of the stay. For all we know the increasing eccentric behaviour of the Baron is due to outside influence. You can borrow the helm from my vacc-suit, it's shielded and a standard seal, I assume you'll be bringing it back with you? Would it not be worth getting the ensign here to be briefed?"

"We should have a spare or two, since we put them on all our suits. I can't see the tech boys skimping on replacement parts," Jakob said. He looked at Frank. "I apologize if I've not been clear on the matter before; I thought it was so obvious that nothing needed to be said. I'm madly in love with Ensign Mallory and will do whatever it takes to protect her. In this case, since in a previous life she was subjected to the very evil you all put a stop to, I'd like to brief her personally first. She'll want to get involved in our group discussions, but I don't want to jump her with something like this with a bunch of people around. It wasn't that long ago, and I'm not sure what all was said or done to her."

"Your relationship with the Ensign has been blindingly obvious for a while, but I apologise for not understanding the depth of the effect of her incarceration.

"And in case 'madly in love' doesn't convey things well, be advised that I'm referring to her as Mrs Domici. She's starting to come around to the idea, but work has been exhausting her. She got less than half a day from the last job until she started ramping up for this."

Prerna simply nods, and turns to Frank. "What can I do to help?"

"I'm not sure yet, until we can discuss protocols with the Lieutenant on his return. I don't want this getting out to the rest of the troops until we are ready. I guess we wait until later. While we wait we could discuss potential scenarios with the information we now have."

"I was supposed to talk to Captain Smith, to see if he had awareness of the extra team in space. Could someone else handle that?" Jakob asked. "To answer an earlier question, we assumed any conscious or semi-conscious brain activity state was susceptible. Of course, we're also assuming the shields we have work. Probably the best option is to determine who the enemy is and neutralize them quickly. An issue is, were they here before us or did they come with us?"

OOC: Assuming Jess relay's the comment about Col Perron helping the hospital:

"Also, we might need to look at this morning's action in a new light. Is it in character for Perron to shoot people and then pay to have them bandaged? I mean, it could be; people are strange. However, it may be a result of enemy activity. The reaction from his troops was that they weren't all in for it, but wouldn't buck their chain."

"I agree that Perrin's behaviour is odd, contradictory, unless there is something wrong with the drugs he donates, or he could be being influenced. We need to find someone who knows him well."

Perron could be doin' "hearts an' minds". Support the volunteer clinic, seem like a nice guy, show the people there's a good side'v the Guard. Could just be a nice guy tryin' ter make up for what he has ter do ter keep order. See's himself fightin' terrorists. Only shoots at the bad guys. I get back, I'll see if I can't put a friendly delegate alongside 'im.
