Casts a line of hooked earthworms to trail behind the stern of the craft as he does a spot of fishing as we travel upriver.

Re: Part 1: Fighters Academy (IC Section 1)
The journey up river starts out fairly well you start out near the town then head through some winding bits of the river through the forest the scenery is lovely to behold and you can only imagine how it might look in the fall with the change of the leaves on the trees. For the first four hours the trip is quiet and uneventful but productive. Some of you find the scenery very calm and relaxing. Strange to think of your quest and what lies out ahead of you. The trip continues on for another few hours with still no action save for some fishing and 3 large trout are caught so far, as well as one snapping turtle that is safely returned to the river without anyone getting hurt. Th trip continues to be quiet for another three hours on the 12th hour is when things change.

Fish you caught
Snapping Turtle
After 12 hours boating upstream you see what looks to be a giant rock then as the boat nears it looks to be a giant frog or toad. As the boat nears the creature it watches the boat closely and acts like it sees something it might light. "Brace yer selves lads an lady! I'm gonna try n steer round the giant toady." the captain calls back. He manages to get the barge far enough away from the toad but the amphibian looks interested and peruses the barge. It's tongue lashes out but misses McTavish who is looking a little green from the boats movement and his distaste for boating. Then a second giant toad emerges from the rivers waters and looks like it wants to join in the fun, Gisella calls out "Arm yourselves and prepare for a fight, anyone using bows take your shots!"

Monty
The Paladin unstraps her Short Bow and braces her feet, trying to steady her aim.
Nocking a Sheaf Arrow, she takes careful aim, holding her breath before letting loose her arrow even as she exhales.
Below is dependent on initiative obviously but here goes!
1st Arrow vs Giant Toad [1d20] = 9
Unless it has horrible AC a definite miss!
2nd Arrow vs the Giant Toad [1d20] = 16
2nd arrow dmg [1d8] = 2

Methodically attach a bolt to his crossbow and ratchets the trigger to get the right tension and looks down a scope to fire straight down the open mouth of the beastie.
Alas a bit of turbulence causes his shot to fire well wide. He mutters under his breath and hides under the legs of the horses corral led in the pen at the stern.

Yagul
Yagul moves closer to Mack, drawing both his scimitars and planning on trying to cut the toads tongues if they snatch someone.
If needed
Scimitar [1d20+2] = 17+2 = 19 to hit [1d8+5] = 4+5 = 9 damage
Scimitar [1d20+2] = 12+2 = 14 to hit [1d8+5] = 5+5 = 10 damage

Shadow shakes his head.
I do so hate using this bow. (-3 for non proficient) +1 Elf and +2 Dex so it's a wash.
[1d20] = 4 Short Bow MISS.

Giant Toads on the River: Battle R0
Initiative Initiative NPCs [1d10] = 5 PCs [1d10] = 6 Initiative Monster [1d10] = 9 Mercenary Band goes first, then PCs then Giant Toads.
Giant Toad AC 6; THAC0 17; # of Attk 1
Mercs
Gisella calls out "We'll take the new one (giant toad #2) on you guys focus on that one over there (giant toad #1)." loads a light crossbow and fires at a giant toad hitting it for 3 dmg!
Burley takes out a shortbow and fires two sheaf arrows at a giant toad missing with both.
Raffaerd draws a shortbow and fires 2 sheaf arrows at a giant toad missing with both.
Togur takes out a shortbow and fires two sheaf arrows at a giant toad missing with both.
-------------------------------------------------------
PCs
Shadow fires two arrows at one of the giant toads and misses.
Mctavish ducks for cover behind a barrel since he has no ranged weapons.
Monty fires two arrows at one of the giant toads and hits for 2 dmg! with one arrow.
Ferris fires a crossbow bolt at one of the giant toads and misses.
Uther casts magic missile at one of the giant toads blasting it with a missile for 8 dmg!
Yagul attempts to hack at the toad's tongue with his scimitar but no target presents itself.
-------------------------------------------------------
Monsters
Giant Toad 1 tongue lashes at Monty thinking she looks like a new treat hitting for 6 dmg!
Giant Toad 2 tongue lashes at Gisella thinking she looks delicious to eat hitting for 7 dmg!
------------------------------------------------------
Quick Summary: Giant Toad 1 is moderately injured, Giant Toad 2 is minorly injured. Gisella & Monty are struck by the toads tongues. MM doesn't say the tongue sticks like it does with giant frogs so guessing there is no 1-2 turns to strike the tongues to be freed so decided that nobody is stuck to a tongue unless the toad does damage enough to knock them out and eat them.
Next Round Actions?

Intake of breath as she is injured.
Concentrating, Monty takes careful aim and again fires off 2 sheaf arrows.
1st Arrow on Toad 1 [1d20] = 16
1st Arrow damage on Toad 1 [1d8] = 6
2nd arrow on Toad 1 [1d20] = 17

Leaps like a toad or a salmon. Whatever. On to the back of one of the toads which enter the boat. Cleaver in hand he hacks at the creature's head.
"Frog legs for dinner lads!" he shouts with a critical hit.
Ferris meat cleaver attack [1d20] = 20 damage [1d4+1] = 3+1 = 4
