Andronichishche

Andronichishche searches in the eastern half of the room, obviously keeping a discrete distance from the kobold corpses. Frequently, the other two could see him silently staring in the direction of the eviscerated kobold. One time his face was even more pale than usual, his eyes wide and staring blankly at the macabre display. He shifted his gaze to the much larger bloody mess in the room, and mouths a quiet, "No!!" before continuing his silent search a bit more ... violently.

He does, however, respond to Maag's question. "I expect there should be plenty of linen in here we can use."

Lerrick

The cleric opens her eyes at the sound of the elevator coming back down. She then gets up and grabs her mace, then moves closer to the fighter and the druid. Once there she turns all of her attention to the elevator coming down, not having a good feeling of who or what might be on the lift.

Gramble stands up

damnit they need to stop screwing around and find that key. I'm going to have to go up there with them to make sure they stay on task.

You wanna split the party......you get walls of text. ;)

Taking Tolls
Starday, 20th of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Warm, Humid

Treasure Room Hallway:

Unable to sleep with the racket of the returning lift, the three remaining horribly injured party members prepare to learn why the others have returned again this time, though Lerrick somehow senses something more sinister.

As the dais platform returns to its lower landing, Maag and Alordan are nowhere to be seen. In their place are 4 skinny naked legs pressed down upon the only copper disc not covered by a statue. As more of the creatures are revealed, they see that those legs are attached to a pair of the same jungle kobolds you ran into earlier. When the kobolds see that they are outnumbered by much larger foes, they turn and leap upwards, climbing up the statues like stone trees and standing atop their heads. They claw and scratch at the smooth walls of the circular shaft, desperately trying to get away from the threatening humans, but they are unable to climb any higher upon the greasy surface.

Actions!

Junk Room:

Alordan moves towards an area previously searched by the slightly crazed Andron. Kicking through some ripped up pages of books, he soon finds a small bundle of hand written notes tied together with a tiny faded ribbon. The script is clearly masculine, strong yet precise. The top note reads as follows:
Melania

You have been warned several times now about your unwillingness to remain in your designated location. Since you cannot control your desire to destroy my hard earned collection by turning them into useless statuary, you leave me little other choice but to relocate you somewhere safer.
There is a second similar paragraph, written in a language the ranger doesn’t understand, but the note ends after that. It isn’t signed. There are another half dozen or so notes in the stack.

Maag notices his shirtless friend might be experiencing a difficult time dealing with what happened while he was alone, looking back at the dead kobolds so often. However, when the thick street hood sees the deceased lying there on the bloody ground, all he sees are packs and pockets that ain’t been turnt out yet. Bulging packs and pockets.

Searching the pile nearby for a blanket or linen to wrap the big dog up into, he spots something old and tattered, but serviceable for the job. As he moves into the mass to retrieve it, his big boot smacks into something hard hidden under the covering on the floor. Gathering the moldering blanket, he finds a large, ornately carved stone cartouche with writing across its front, broken into a few pieces on the ground.

Despite his thousand yard stare, and his bare, blood soaked torso, Andronichishche walks back into the pile, bends down when his foot clinks on something on the floor, only to retrieve one ridiculously large bronze key, exactly the same size his friends said it might be, as if he had known exactly where it was all along.

Alordan studies the papers but doesn’t understand their impact. He hands them to Andron - maybe they’ll get his mind right with something to puzzle over. “What do you make of these? Seem important..”

Maag

In his profession, Maag has heard of wizards leaving magical signs on objects that lock, or explode, or sometimes worse. Since he can't seem to work out what the symbol says from where he's standing, he starts to poke at the pieces with his bamboo pole. His idea is to try and arrange the pieces into a coherent pattern.

Andronichishche

Sorry, trying to spread out these walls of text. There's a lot to share.

Andronichishche stoops to retrieve the bronze key of unusual size from the floor. He holds it above his head for the others to see clearly from amidst the larger pieces of junk. "It would seem this may be the key you're looking for?" He turns it about in his hand, examining it more closely. "It's only made from a copper alloy, though."

He glances about the room, gesturing at the near complete and total destruction. "Also, given the thoroughness of Marquees's search and what Mina told us about his ramblings ... He was obssessed with the medusa's treasure. How then did he not find this? Or did he? We must be careful. This may not be the proper key we seek."

He perks up at the proffered bundle of notes from Alordan. Gone is the thousand yard stare, replaced with the glint of curiosity and the familiar demeanor as when his mind is pondering something of particular import. He takes the bundle of papers and peruses the top note, nodding his head as if this confirmed something he had suspected.

Flipping quickly through the remaining notes, he checks for any written in Common. "The strange language is likely the same used on the tiny box Melania gave to Marquees. I will need rest before I can decipher anything else, though. I already used my spell of comprehension to read parts of a book I discovered here earlier. The story therein is indeed related to the first note. The book will take some time to explain, however, and we shouldn't linger here any longer than necessary. It sounds like something Mr. Gramble would be eager to hear, too." The last sentence was spoken with no hint of sarcasm, so it's unclear whether it was an attempt at humor or he was his usual, serious self again.

He raises his left hand now and indicates a plain, gold ring he's wearing. "I also found this earlier under a broken divan near the center of the room. I had detected magic underneath the sofa, but was accosted by the kobolds before I could investigate more closely with the spell. I assume the ring is magical, yet it bears no inscription or decoration of any kind. Nor is it obviously cursed, or has any observable effect. Another detection spell is required to confirm its nature."

Seeing that Maag is occupied with a discovery, he continues searching for any remaining intact copper items or written artifacts.

Lerrick

Inspired by the Gramble's charge and thinking that the situation is hopeless given the amount of damage badly injury the party is, the cleric ignores logical reasoning and rushes forward with mace in hand following the lead of the fighter and hoping to assist him in battle. She swings at the kobold not being attacked by Gramble.

Taking Tolls
Starday, 20th of Goodmonth
Mid Morning, Warm, Humid

Treasure Room Hallway:

As the kobolds unsuccessfully try to flee, Tlachtga moves closer and begins a spell that will brighten their targets up nicely. Gramble steps onto the dais, wedges himself in between the many statues filling its surface, and takes a whack at the skittering monsters overhead. His angry blow kills one of them instantly, nearly cutting it in half the long way. When his buddy sees that there is no escape back up the shaft, it turns and jumps at the fighter, trying to stab at him through the statues with a sharp pointy stick. Just as it turns purple from the druids magic, Gramble kills that creature as well, once it lands directly upon his ax head.

By the time Lerrick hops over the smashed statue on the floor, ready to get involved, all she finds is 2 dead jungle kobolds and Gramble now partially soaked in their warm blood.

Actions?

Junk Room:

Glad to see Andron coming around at the sight of the new notes, Maag ignores the unpicked bodies of the dead kobolds, instead looking closer at the large decorative stone mantle at his feet. Unable to move the heavy pieces with his pole, he pushes them together with his foot instead, noticing that they must spell out some words that he doesn't exactly understand yet. Even after being shown the key they seek, he digs around on the floor some more, trying to find more pieces to his massive stone puzzle. Assembling a few more of the broken chunks, Maag realizes that he is going to need a little help with these big words.

Alordan also keeps looking through the ripped up books and discarded papers strewn throughout the area at his feet. He doesn't find any more notes in the refuse, but one piece of parchment with a circular diagram drawn upon it catches the rangers eye, reminding him of the raised dais in the entry chamber of this complex. The page has strange writing, runes, and sigils drawn on it that are beyond the rangers knowledge of comprehension.

Andron tells the others that they should get back to the party quickly, but he cant satiate his own curiosity any more than he can convince the others to stop looking around either. Other than the huge brass key, he finds nothing else of interest in his search area. Taking a closer look at the notes handed to him by Alordan, the bloodied priest notices that each note is written in both the common tongue and the strange language he has seen earlier, likely the rare script of the medusae.

As soon as the cleric gets to the battle she sees it is already done. She arrives to see the badly wounded fighter now covered in a fresh coat of kobold blood. The cleric smiles So that's what kobold blood looks like.

Andronichishche

Andronichishche eagerly accepts the parchment from Alordan and immediately begins to analyze it. He stops himself for a moment after he realizes Alordan also asked him a question. "The dais? I am fairly certain from reading the book that I know its original purpose." He brushes the air as if to dismiss the train of thought. "I will explain that later, though ... now this ...", he gestures at the parchment, "May tell us its current purpose. An excellent find, Mr. Alordan."

He attempts to discern the diagram and notations. If necessary, he will cast Read Magic to interpret the runes and sigils. If time permits, he will also peruse the remaining notes in the bundle.
