Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
I thought of this when one of the players in a game i'm in forgot their login information for the dice roller but knew their information for the forum.
It would be nice if possible if we could combine that into one login so that if i'm logged into the forum the dice roller would be logged into as well. I realize it may not be technically easy and there would have to be some combining of people with different info for both but it would increase overall usability of both in tandem.

Yes!
Not that I used the dice roller alot, but it sure would be nice for my players not to have to log in twice! C'mon Tonixx - what's it gonna take to git 'er done? A few virgin sacrifices?? A case of beer? Mila Kunis' phone number?

FYI, ToniXX is on vacation for a week or so and probably won't be answering this question in the next four or five days.
Don't you guys ever use the check box to "Remember Me"? I haven't logged into the dice roller in months because I always stay logged in. Not sure if I'd remember my login right now if I had to, even. I'd probably have to try a few times...

No I disdain cookies and all things saved on my PC temporary or not so even if I clicked it it would be useless because I wipe all of those type of things regularly.Alethan wrote:FYI, ToniXX is on vacation for a week or so and probably won't be answering this question in the next four or five days.

I'm not at all familiar with the phpBB software, and even less familiar with what is being used for the die roller website, but I wouldn't think implementing single sign-on (SSO) between the two sites would be too difficult. In fact, a simple 'phpbb sso integration' search in the Google machine quickly produced this, which might help should ToniXX be so inclined:
phpBB3 Cross-site Sessions Integration

Hmmm. That would be interesting. It's just saving another log on though, right? I'd still need to open another tab/window to use it I think.

This is a game about killing things and taking their stuff so you can become more powerful in order to kill bigger things and take even better stuff.

For the purposes of Unseen Servant, implementing SSO would allow users to use one username and password to access both the forums and the die roller.Single sign-on wrote:"Single sign-on (SSO) is a property of access control of multiple related, but independent software systems."
"Benefits of using single sign-on include:
* Reducing password fatigue from different user name and password combinations
* Reducing time spent re-entering passwords for the same identity
* Reducing IT costs due to lower number of IT help desk calls about passwords
SSO shares centralized authentication servers that all other applications and systems use for authentication purposes and combines this with techniques to ensure that users do not have to actively enter their credentials more than once.
SSO users do not need to remember so many passwords to log in to different systems or applications."

Re: Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
My understanding as my job recently implemented this with our products is to the end user they would login once and be able to go back and forth between the apps seamlessly.

Re: Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
This is a good idea, and I thought briefly of implementing it when I was setting up the sites. But, the sites are written in two different server side languages. It could still be done, but unfortunately, at this point it's not going to happen. Sorry.
The most you might see is a common login through a Google account, which wouldn't mean much if you don't have a Google account.

Re: Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
Would it be possible for people to get their dice roller ID changed to match the forum ID, then they could change the password to match their forum password.
Then at least the dice roller and the forum would have the same user ID and the same password.

Re: Combine logins for US Dice Roller and Forums
I could modify the code to let users change their dice roller ID. I kind of assumed that this is what people would do anyway. But as I said, it would require modifying the code for the roller.Alethan wrote:Would it be possible for people to get their dice roller ID changed to match the forum ID, then they could change the password to match their forum password.
