Saul finds a smaller circle and begins scrapping horizontally with his knife. He never enters the circle nor does he follow any pattern other than side to side and remembering to always move around it.

Thordin hacks at the circle branded into the very floor itself, sending chips of spongy wood flying with every stroke. Those watching notice that the gloom that seems to hover within the confines of the circle is beginning to, inexplicably, leak out as if in marring the circle the doughty dwarf punctured an invisible barrier. The air begins to grow warmer at the same time. But that's probably just the heat of the sun, warming the air, right?

As he backs away from the gloom towards the stairs, Lanny notices the warmness in the air. Arriving at the stairs, he pauses a moment as if a thought suddenly crosses his mind. He takes out his spyglass and looks through it to the sky above.

Seeing the darkness leak out from the barrier, Bregalad will spread some of the holy water (given to him by Drudsa) across the broken part of the circle.
(He hopes that if something is trying to get out, it will not want to cross the water.)

Bregalad, thinking quickly, upends the flask of holy water upon the break in the circle. There is a purple flash of light, a puff of greasy smoke and what sounds to be a faint cry of impotent fury. The dark shadow ceases to flow from inside the circle out; what shadow has escaped seems to be coalescing into something. It spins and gyrates upon itself like some sort of miniature storm cloud. As it spins the cloud draws in on itself, and begins to condense into an almost solid darkness.

Thordin the dwarf, watching all this with a kind of lackadaisical antipathy, casually puts away his ax, draws his magic sword and dons his rowan shield. He then strolls over to the semi-corporeal darkness and attempts to cleave it in twain.
