Splitting The Party
Starday, 20th of Goodmonth
Late Morning, Hot, Humid, Buggy

When Laim yells back at the constable, it only makes matters worse. Pulling a dagger from his belt, Glansandi is on Liam in a flash, the human barely having enough time to grab and hold the elf's shaking forearm before his dagger plunges deep into his neck. They fight against each others strength for a second, Liam can feel the tip of the blade pushing against a very dangerous portion of his neck. "It is long overdue for you to learn that Constable Glansandi runs Beachtown now, mister!" Spittle flies from the enraged elf's mouth as he pushes his point home, only to hear the calm voice of Marge from behind him.

"Aahhh, Constable? There are several people who are watching this scene play out right now. Do you really intend to murder one of our councilmen right here in front of everyone?"

Glansandi retracts his blade and releases Liam from his powerful grip. "You two have been nothing but a pain in my ass since you came here. If you want to do things your way, go ahead! There will be no help from the town militia in the least! And you should know that I will be watching the two of you like a hawk from now on! If you ever snap back at me or one of my lawmen again, I will have you thrown in jail......or maybe something worse!"

The gathered townsfolk all appear shocked at the outcome of this conversation, but none of them dare to say a word against the elf as he storms off towards his barracks. "I will expect a full report about this incident with the pirates upon your return," he shouts as he departs the area with a huff.

Marge just looks at Dex and Liam, a little embarrassed. "See? What did I tell ya? Just leave him simmer down now boys, we can make it without his help."

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter, who had turned and was returning during the attack, slows down again and returns to Liam's side. "Well," he says."That escalated quickly." He shakes his head. "I'm sorry. That was sloppy of me. I never thought that would happen or I wouldn't have left your side. Won't happen again." As they walk, Dexter adds, so low that only Liam can hear it. "I believe that man may have to die."

Liam

It is all he can do not to draw on the Constable's back, but he knows that now in his weakened state, he is no match for the man. He looks at Marge, Dex, and the others. I made a mistake asking him to be a part of the Council. Something is not right about him.
We will have to deal with him. Soon. For now, though we need to get water and our companions back. We still need 10 able bodies, with or without his approval, he is not the ruler, the council is. And it goes by the majority.
He turn to the gathered people. Who would go with me?

As the unpleasant elf takes his leave, Liam portrays a bit of what has gotten him this far in life. Asking around at the gathered crowd brings looks of trepidation from many possible volunteers, but he does manage to talk 3 able bodied men to go along with them.

As he is about to give up, he sees 2 of the sash wearing town militia arrive from the direction of their barracks. “If there is a call for protection, we will help! I am Sarg.... Jombo, and this is Greff. Both of us know how to use these swords we carry, and would be of great use to you, if you will have us.”

There are no other volunteers, but these trained fighters would make up for several farmers with pitchforks.

Marge looks at Liam. “Daylights a wastin, ya know?”

Liam

He nods firmly. thank you, everybody. Let's go! he will shakes hands with the volunteers and give Joe a clap on the back. You're a damn good help and an even better man. Good job, Joe.

He will grab one of the buckets from the water bearers and offer his free arm to Marge before leading the rescue party east.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dexter nods and smiles at the two militiamen who are obviously ignoring Glansandi's directives. He once again tightens up his pack and heads out. "I wouldn't mind helping with the water," he tells Marge. "But unless you have at least one short member of your team, my height would make it hard on both of us."

Marge gets Joe and the wagon ready for the trip while any last minute preparations are made. Greff and Jombo take the lead positions, ready to get this recovery under way. The three commoners who offered to help seem confused, not really sure what they have just gotten themselves into. They see the weapons on the militia, looking around for their protection before the train sets out.

Dexter Broadleaf

Dex looks up at Liam, "Say, I just had a thought. I heard there is a Druid here in town. Raygun or Reyrey, or something like that. I wonder if he'd come with us? Maybe put Keg back on his feet? Could we ask him?"

Sorry, some of this had already been written.

The group gets underway just before noon, trying to make the best time they can in hopes of returning yet today. The three farmers don’t appear to be marksman, but they will take any weapons offered to them since they have heard how dangerous these trips into the jungle can be.

About half way up the beach, something strange is seen in the sand ahead. It looks like two stretches of disturbed sand, as if something (or two things) dragged themselves from out of the jungle straight across the sand to the waterline. Though the sand is clearly disturbed, it also look slightly heaped in the very center of the disturbed strips.

Marge stops the caravan about 20 feet away and asks. “Whatta you boys think a that mess? Something don’t look right about that ta me.” Dexter looks around and remembers this area well, after taking three visual lines of sight on it the last time he was here.

Liam

if possible retro actively to have Liam ask Reythan for help, I'd like to.

Liam runs his chin. I've heard of turtles coming ashore and burying their eggs, but this seems the other way around.
Maybe a pair of rafter were dragged away, and something buried for later? Either way, I think this is a problem for a return trip. Time is of the essence, and we run out of it by the second.

"Don't stop here," says Dexter quickly. "Don't stop here." As they move past the area, he continues. "On our way back from our first scouting mission against the pirates, our attention was brought to that spot right out there." He points out over the water. "Daisy and I swam out there to have a look. Spotted a great big hole in the bottom, with a long grey snake.... or tentacle.... or eel. Whatever, it was big and I didn't want to mess with it.... at least in the water."

Liam urges the train on while Dexter emphasizes the notion.

Pushing past the raised lines in the sand, the lead members safely pass without incident, then the wagon rolls past next, leaving only a few folks at the rear of the train left to vacate the area, when all sandy hell breaks loose.

A pair of slimy tentacles suddenly lurch up out of the disturbed sand. One flails around wildly, but doesn’t hit anything. The other wraps around the ankle of one of the farmers legs, yanking him down to the sand and quickly dragging him towards the sea. The water gatherers shriek as Greff and Jombo rush towards the man with their swords drawn, intending to hack him free if they can, despite the flailing of the second unoccupied tentacle.

When Dexter looks out towards the area he investigated earlier, he is certain that there is no possible way that whatever he saw in the water that day could be big enough to stretch this far from its underwater cave. Then he almost shrieks himself when he sees the horrific monster pop up out of the sand at the shoreline.

"Oh damn...." Dexter mutters as he loads and fires off the sling bullet he had in hand. Not wanting to risk hitting one of their own, he goes for the big, shiny center mass of the thing.

Attack with Sling [1d20+6] = 8+6 = 14

Damage from Sling Bullet vs. Large [1d6+1] = 6+1 = 7

Looks up. Crap on a cracker............ I'm getting too old for this! Looking to the civilian with his crossbow: Don't just stand there! Shoot the damn thing in the eyes!

He then draws his sword and tries to distract the other tentacle, taking a wild swing at it.

Rapier To Hit: [1d20+2] = 4+2 = 6 DMG: s [1d8] = 1 L [1d12] = 1

Greff and Jombo hack away at the tentacle pulling the farmer towards the sea monsters gaping maw, their attacks doing little to stop the imminent luncheon. Liam yells at the man he gave his crossbow to, but instead of turning to shoot, the commoner turns and runs back towards town at full speed along with the final freaked out hired hand. Dexter positions himself and fires a stone at the beast, hitting it squarely and causing it some discomfort. Liam stays put and attacks the second tentacle defensively as well.

Once 4 more tentacles suddenly spring up out of the sandy water heading straight for any stationary targets, Greff and Jombo give up their attacks and turn to run back for the caravan.

Marge again proves that her intelligence matches her vigorous tenacity. As soon as the wagon and her girls are safely up the trail, she turns back to scream at the menfolk. “What the hells are you doing? Run away you damned fools!!!”

Seeing Greff and Jombo pull back, Dexter immediately follows suit. He doesn't spare so much as a look back, fleeing at a full run. "I don't know what you are, but you're going to die for that," he mutters to himself. When he reaches the others, he says, "I swear, when Daisy and I saw that thing, it was in a hole at least sixty feet off shore. I figured it is a fish eater.... it was only when I realized where we were and saw the 'tracks' that I started second-guessing that."

Dex and Liam sprint towards the others, hearing the dying farmers cries for help ringing out over the normal din of the jungle. His screams of agony from slowly being eaten by this horrible sea monster causes the woman folk to cover their ears and avert their gaze.

Jombo and Greff sprint towards the wagon through the soft sand trying to evade the oncoming tentacles. Jombo succeeds, Greff is not so lucky. The end of a squid like appendage lashes around the young man’s ankle and yanks him to the sand. He hacks at the thing wildly with his sword, trying to cut himself free before he too is dragged into the beasts toothy maw.

Jombo is about to return to help his friend when Greff screams. “Save yourselves! We can’t beat this thing! RUN AWAY!!!” Jombo moves out of the reach of the flailing tentacles and turns to watch the horror at the shore unfold.
