The mage scribbles some numbers on a sheet of vellum with a stylus. "I can provide you with potions that help resist the effect of its poisonous breath. I don't have any right now, and it will be at least a week before the first one is ready. They will be 750 gold each. They won't provide complete immunity, but should lessen the effects and provide the imbiber with greater resistance. An amulet or talisman could potentially be more potent, absorbing all or most of the poison. But that would be more expensive, and take more time. I probably couldn't have anything finished in less than, say, two months."

"Mardan Cy, how about we find ourselves an in to perform in. Goshawk here can be our muscle and keep the women off the stage! Haha! It is good to be back in the city!"

"I think we should check-in with Tolniel Fer, see what's been going on, before we find rooms. Then tomorrow we can see the Seneschal and show Kzerzo around a bit. When did we last speak to Madame Fleur? We should use the mirror, if we can. Rhea's Ford should be a good place to try and find some other magic against dragons, as well."

I'll take it out of my funds.

Gardo

As they approach Rhea's Ford, Gardo pulls his horse near Kzerzo. "I'm sorry.. umm... Baroness?.. Mistr..Milady! That was it. Milady Kzerzo. I feel i should say something to you. As you can easily see, you are now in the middle of us humans. You have seen a wide variety of how we live. Earlier, you had made mention of the condition of Alice and the people who live there."

"Saying that within our group is fine, as we adventurers will take what we get for where we lay out heads. However, those people in Alice are doing something just as adventurous and dangerous, making a place to live. They are willing to put comfort aside to make things come true. Over time, Alice will become more and more like the other towns we have, like Rhea's Ford."

"I respect your father as a leader and warrior and vowed to make sure you got here safe. I need to say this to help you stay safe and be effective as a diplomat. Comments like your thoughts on Alice and calling humans 'softskins' should be done in your own room, between you and your companion.... which I thought was with us somewhere. Milady, words like that may lead some humans to be mistrustful, even wishing you harm. Then I would have to fight them and it would become a big mess and we really don't need that."

"I know this is a huge change. Consider things as they are presented and allow myself and this group to guide you. In fact, you should allow our factor here to help guide you in the navigation of this city and lands. Please, come with us, speak with him, and see if he would be useful in your task set by your father."

The ironskin warrior listens, nodding as Gardo speaks. "You are telling the truth," she says, "my people are forward and, perhaps, somewhat without tact. I will take your advice and keep my my counsel to myself."

Rhea's Ford
The Offices of Tolniel Fer

Fer is working late; by the time the adventurers descend from the foothills down into the fertile valley surrounding Rhea's Ford, and then into the city itself, it is getting on early evening. He looks up as the adventurers enter. "Well, well, well," he says, "I was beginning to fear we would never see you again, but here you are. How was your journey? Were you successful?"

"Well it was certainly eventful. We were indeed successful, and found some new friends along the way. This is Zellar, she is a dervish from Kimrid and is now travelling with the group. Our other new friend is lady Kzerzo, daughter of Baron Xelazo, of the land if Draea, which lies between Alice and Kimrid. The lady is here on a diplomatic mission from her father. What has been happening since we left?"

Tolnier Fer

"Well met," says Fer, bowing low, to the two ladies in turn. "I see there is much for me to hear. To be honest, I haven't had much to do here, and am looking forward to that changing. I assume you would like to arrange a meeting with the Seneschal in the morning? In the meanwhile, your rooms are ready at the inn. I have held them for your return. Feargus, I am sure you would be welcome to hop onto the stage, should that be your desire."
The_Wanderer wrote:Feargus

Tolniel Fer

"Rumors!" he exclaims, throwing his hands into the air. "It is perhaps more noteworthy when the Princes are not at one anothers' throats. The Throne of Many Colors has sat empty since the beginning of the last Nadir, one hundred and twenty-two years ago, since the death of the Last High King. During the Nadir the Princes were, for the most part, concerned with maintaining their territorial gains and less concerned about clashing with their bretheren, although that certainly happened as well. Now that the Nadir is over they have two goals: expanding their territories and maneuvering to place themselves upon the throne. The Scarlet Prince and the Jade Princess have always been enemies, though separated by many miles. I hear rumors, though, that with the reopening of the route to the Silver Sea our Prince may be considering a naval venture. But that is many years away. A land assault is much more likely, though potentially more dangerous. I hear that the Coral Principality has splintered into countless factions of warring dukes and barons, and though the Azure Principality claims a large swath of land, in practice their control over their territory is minimal. There are many routes through the mountains, many passes that are unguarded."

He looks around at the companions. "But surely you do not desire to involve yourselves in the machinations of nations, unless it be to enrich yourselves! I have also found a new companion to swell your ranks, a magic-user called Xander Arkano. He is staying at the same inn as you; perhaps I will be able to introduce you at dinner tonight!"

"Milady, I find you and the other siderenos to be very honest with your thoughts. Really, it is a nice change for me. Most of my life has been around people who were rarely straight about what they thought. Even my father had some sort of motive when he spoke to me. Mariusz was the first person I found who was honest with me. Please don't stop being truthful just from my speaking about it. Just remember us softskins tend to be... vulnerable when the truth is before us. And it makes some of us mad."

....

Upon hearing Tolnier speak about the rooms, Gardo breaks into a grin. "That is great news! I could use a nice night today with food, drink, and good company. Also, whenever you can arrange it, I'd like my lantern thing back."

Zellar scowls at Fer's description of the princes' petty squabbles.

"Why would the princes of humanity abase themselves to fight with one another, when the threat of chaos yet looms? Don't they realize there are more important things to do than feud with one another? What good is a throne if you can't keep your life and liberty from the wicked blades of orcs?"

The factor sucks air in through his teeth. "Weeell, we all know that our Scarlet Prince is a fair and just man, honest and beyond reproach. The Jade princess is, of course, untrustworthy and venal, as well as generally unattractive. The Azure Prince is said to a decent man, a bit weak-willed, and the closest to our Scarlet Prince in age as well as blood; it is said they share the same great-grandmother, a consort of the last High King. The Coral Prince is dead, they say, while others say he has simply withdrawn into a haze of drugs and whores, allowing his nobles to do what they will as they scramble for power."

Zellar
Is Zellar able to ascertain from Fer's expressions and body language to what degree his characterizations are made with sarcasm versus seriousness? Reading into it, I'd say his depiction of the Scarlet and the Jade at least are... politically coloured.
"What has the Jade Princess done to sabotage the Scarlet Prince? Over what do they conflict in particular? Territorial rights? Taxes? Or is it merely personal dislike? Does the Scarlet Prince mean to conquer her entire demesne?"

Tolniel Fer

"Ma'am, there's tomes in those questions that we could spend weeks on, but let's see if I can provide an overview." He steeples his hands and tilts his head back, as if in thought. "The Variegated Kingdom, as we now think of it, was founded three Cycles ago, united by the first High King, Marckar Regincan, and divided into the eight Princedoms that exist today. The seat of power, and the Throne of Many Colors, is in the Umber Principality, and since the end of the last Apex has stood empty. The remaining Princes: Scarlet and Jade, Coral and Azure, Violet and Sable, and Alabaster, have been squabbling over who should sit on the throne, but until recently, with the cycling of Chaos, have been too preocupied with their own concerns to attempt anything directly."

Fer looks as though he would have enjoyed a life as a teacher, or perhaps a philosopher. "I do not know why Scarlet and Jade seem set against each other. I know there is strife between Violet and Sable even as we speak, and armies marching, but those two lie directly adjacent to each other. Why the antipathy between Scarlet and Jade? I don't know, honestly. Why do any two people dislike each other? Surely you have known people you simply cannot stand, or that have wronged you? Our prince must see Jade as an obstable to the throne, or vice versa."
It seems as if Fer's previous comments had the tone of those who are accustomed to speaking the party line but don't necessarily agree with the message.

Fifthmonth, Fourteenthday
Rheas Ford
The Strutting Peacock

Fer has arranged for the adventurers to have permanent rooms in an inn called the Strutting Peacock. It is a middle of the road establishment located near the eastern gates, in a relatively quiet part of the city. The New Quarters, as it is known, home to the newly middle-class. Each adventurer has their own room -- small but clean and lockable, with bed, bureau, and wash-basin -- with a shared bathchamber at the end of the hall. Their retainers are given smaller rooms on the floor below, two to a room.

After settling in they meet in the common eating area, where they are soon approached by a stranger. Could this be the magic-user, one Xander Arkando, that Fer mentioned to them?
Yes, it is, indeed. I'll send fireinthedust a PM to let him know he's up.

Feargus

As he is making his way to the stage with Mardan Cy, Feargus spots one wearing the unmistakable signs of a magic user. Never one to miss an opportunity, he leaves his audience waiting and approaches the man. "Good evening, name is Feargus Fireseed. My group had heard mention of a disciple of the magical arts looking to attach themselves to an adventuring party. Would that be you?"
