Before departing...
Sorry I'm behind on this one!
"You are the one called Owulf? My name is Zellar, of Kimrid. I am a dervish of the Mnencir. Father Odos tells me that you are interested in a life of adventure, and it is my objective to recruit as many opponents of chaos as possible. A great battle is coming in these lands, and all strong arms are needed. Do you believe you have the courage to stand against the beastkin and the other fell creatures of chaos?"
Owulf

The youth looks nervous but tries to hide it. "I can certainly try, ma'am. My parents taught me in the art of fencing, and I am agile and quick on my feet. I think I could be an asset to your and your companions."
He is a 1st level acrobat (from the Advanced Genre Rules). If you want to take him on I'll post the revised class ASAP. Are you making a standard offer or are you going to try and sweeten the pot (signing bonus, magic item, etc?)
Zellar will offer a standard cut of gold and experience, and will offer to fully equip and support Owulf's needs until such a time as he has banked 2,000 gold pieces of his own.
Owulf

The lad's face turns a pale white. "Er, I'm not sure I can do this. It seemed like a good idea in the abstract, but this all getting too real for me. Thank you for your time."

Those middle two rolls, especially the first, are pretty bad, and failures. Sorry!

"I will look into identifying this sword while you are on the road."

After spending his eight hours in the Baron's library, the mage takes the sword to the priests and asks about the cost of identifying its dweomer.
The book is dense and written in an archaic -- or unusual -- form of Common that makes it extremely difficult to parse. It deals with the land of Faery, which Telemachus knows is another dimension that is coterminous with the Mortal World, although difficult to access. He makes it about halfway through the book, and gleans the following items of interest.

*A set of directions. The writer assumes a base level of familiarity with the terrain, stating that the path to Court over Sea and Under Stone starts with, "stand at the base of the Twins, facing the setting sun, at midnight on the third day after a full moon. Walk forward one hundred paces, turn left, close your eyes and take a step. Wait to the count of one hundred, turn west again, and walk forward one hundred and one paces. Turn to your right; a cave mouth will open in the cliff face before you. Enter the cave, bearing no light source. The cave leads to Faery."

*The ruler of the Court over Sea and Under Stone is named Iltormarreth, a powerful Fae lady who responds positively to flattery.

*Among her subjects are dwarves that mine a rare type of ore called mithril.

Later that Evening

Odos allows that he can attempt to identify the blades. "Priests usually are no use identifying items not of a divine nature, but we priests of Yster have an affinity for all things martial. I will look at this blade. Because of your service to our folk I will do so with no cost, as a favor to you."

Fifthmonth, Tenthday
The Road South
Hex 236.128

The adventurers backtrack to what they feel -- or perhaps, hope -- is a safe distance, and camp for the night. They are either correct or lucky and the night passes without incident.
Fifthmonth, Eleventhday
The Road South
Hex

The adventurers rise in the morning and continue south, skirting wide around the abandoned village. After about two hours on the road Newton notices his horse is getting skittish, and, casting his gaze about, he espies a half-dozen or so gre-furred wolves pacing the party, some hundred yards off the east. They do nothing other than keep abreast with the riders, and after ten minutes or so they melt back into the woods.

Just as they are beginning to think about setting up camp for the night the woods lighten and they come across a settlement in the process of being rebuilt. A score of workers are winding down the days' tasks as another dozen or so guards in chain and wearing the bright red of tabards of the Cardinal Baron watch the perimeter. "Ho there travelers!" calls one of the guards, "state your names and affiliations before advancing any further!"

The adventurers have reached the borders of the Scarlet Principality.

Fifthmonth, Eleventhday
Draea

Telemachus spends the entire day finishing the journal. The sun is low on the horizon by the time he finishes, but he learns the following facts, in addition to what he had previously gleaned:

*The Court of Over Sea and Under Stone is bounded to the East by a sparkling ocean, the domain of the Scaled Ones and the Court of Fins. To the West lies the Fructuous Forest, a vast wilderness of unclaimed woods inhabited by various wild Fae. To the South is the Swamp of Malignant Vapours, a desolate, blighted land of the Winter Court, and the North the mountains of Faery continue, ruled by Count Irviusre, the Granite Lord.

*The Court of Fins is littered with the wreckage of ships that have foundered over the centuries, and the Fae inhabitants have scavenged all manners of treasure from the debris. Occasionally a ship from the Mortal World will be blown off course and pierce the boundaries between the Realms, winding up at the bottom of the Ocean of the Scales.

*In the palace of Iltormarreth can be found a door carved from a single slab of walnut and inlaid with a web of mother-of-pearl. Those that know the correct patterns and proper words can trace a path upon the inlay, open the door, and travel to even more exotic locations than the Realms of Faery.

"Aha! I heard there was a group sent north. Did you make it to Kimrid, is the road clear?" He peers at Kzerzo, the Baron's daughter that has accompanied them south. ". . . and it looks like you have brough strangers with you, as well. Night is falling, and the border is still not totally secure. "Not much that I know of. We've been stationed here the past two weeks, and will rotate out in another week. All's been relatively quiet, here. Some goblins showed their face about a week ago, but we fired our bows at them and they ran. Haven't seen them since."

Fifthmonth, Twelfthday
Hex 235.132

The night passes uneventfully. The guards and civilians both are eager for information of what lies in the woods beyond their rebuilding; what manner of beasts, if friends of foes can be found lurking in the woods, and so forth. All of the adventurers, even young Marden Cy, are regarded as heroes. Kzerzo is treated coolly, at first, with sidelong looks and narrowed glances cast at the young woman with skin of iron and rather less clothes than they are used to, but as the campfires burn low several of the guards approach her and they begin chatting.

From here it is a simple half-day's ride back to Alice. It is much as they left it; a dirty, muddy frontier town packed to the gills with people.
Let me know what you guys would like to do. It would be a good oportunity to deposit/withdraw money, if desired. You've got another two weeks plus before CoL comes due again.

Feargus, Heading South

Feargus spends time with the leader of the detachment updating him on the changes the party has observed since the last cycle including Kimrid and Draea. He also makes sure to mention the haunted(?) village that stands between this outpost and Draea.

"What is this place to be then? A new village?"

"Aye. Or rather, we're rebuilding one that was razed by the orcs and beastmen end of the last Cycle. The Baron figures the road north is the key to trade -- we're landlocked here, and Alice grew up as a way station for caravans heading from Rhea's Ford north. They say that once you hit Kimrid there's a river that flows eastward, from the hill country, towards the Violet Principality."

It takes her some time; unlike Kimrid, in which the worship of Mnencir plays a pivotal role in, well, everything, these folk almost seem to have relegated religion to the back burner. She finds three temples:

*The first is also the largest, a wood and stone structure near the center of town, dedicated to a deity called Manifest. It's large enough to support a temple and what looks to be a half dozen or so full-time priests that likely live in the complex.
*The second is a smaller building built of wood sealed with pitch. She notices it only as passersby point it out, telling her it is the temple to Maraelwe. "A priest named Fledles lives in the back," she is told, "but he's drunk most of the time."
*The third is the smallest, and is more of a roadside shrine than an actual temple. On the northern side of town, near where the road came in, is a small garden, perhaps no more than a score of feet in diameter, carefully tended and planted, the moss-covered earth contrasting with the churned mud streets. In the center she sees a statue carved from wood, depicting what looks to be a nude female figure with the head of some sort of animal; a bear, perhaps, or bobcat? It's hard to tell; the sculpture is grey and weathered, and already carved in a rather abstract and fanciful manner. She does not see anyone in attendance, but notes a few bunches of picked flowers have been placed around the feet of the statue.

Newton spends time in the inns, speaking to the merchants and travellers to find out the latest news, particularly about war.

Ribar will pay his respects at the temple to Manifest.
will also take the opportunity to get some money out.

Newton gets the impression that war is not imminent, but the threat of conflict is looming on the horizon. The wags he talks to intimate it will likely not be this year, but perhaps the next. "There's money to be made, though," says a taciturn-looking woman in pale red robes, "you find a good source of iron ore -- hell, pretty much any ore that doesn't play itself out after a month of digging -- and you're future is assured. The Prince is hungry for horseflesh, too, as well as trained warriors. Mercenaries may be cheap now, as we're digging out of the last Cycle, but mark my words they'll get pricey in the next year or so."

Gardo

Gardo finds Feargus as he is talking to the guard. As they hit a lull in the conversation, he nudges his companion. "Say, not sure who should be thinking about it but we probably need to add a few more mercs to fill up some of the holes that have been created."

"Kind of a sad thought but true. Maybe there's a company either here or in Alice that we can recruit." To the guard he says, "By the way, what is the name of this place?" "It was called Pont, before it was burnt. Not sure if they're going to call it the same the again or not." He gestures at the workers. "It was razed some twenty years ago, so most of the folks working to rebuild were kids then, if they even lived here. Half of them are from somewhere else, ot seems, looking to start a new life."
